Water is Low, but Spirits are HighI want to say thanks to all the members and helpers that made the May 19 Low Boil

a rousing success. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day. The turn out, the food and the music all exceeded expectations. I have received numerous compliments on the cooking. The credit goes to Ellen & David Lee for planning, purchasing and preparation, along with their crew of shrimp/crawfish boilers, John Brennan and Bob Herb, with Tevis Stine overseeing roast chicken and red beans/rice.

John Zibrida’s Cadillac Tattoo rocked into the night and they were joined on stage by local guitarists Steve Craigg, Bryan Stuart and event chairman Dag Sandbakken. Dag also generously arranged for the van service to provide rides home. He and wife Kathy were back the next morning to clean up and restore order to the picnic grounds.

The event served as one of the official semi-annual BLHA Membership meetings and we used the opportunity to conduct some business prior to eating. We started by highlighting some of the notable accomplishments so far this year. We also recognized the individuals that have worked so hard and committed their time and money to make all this happen

The projects and improvements undertaken so far are the ones that had the most immediate impact and feasible within our time frame and budget as determined by the BLHA Board and Capital Improvements Committee. We had originally allocated $10,000 dollars for capital improvements and much needed ground maintenance. This has funded several projects that are outlined in the “Grounds Maintenance” article on page 8.

At that time we recognized the individuals that made all this possible, first and foremost – Steve Seitz. Everything that has been accomplished so far this year has been spearheaded by Steve. He has the vision, passion and perseverance to make things happen. Thankfully he also has the patience of Job to graciously solicit input from numerous sources, accommodate countless personal perspectives and produce a consensus.

Steve is a professional in

mission management and I can’t even fathom how much it would cost to employ that caliber of resource on behalf of the BLHA. In addition to conceiving, proposing, designing and managing these projects Steve also performs a great deal of the actual labor himself. He is on the job constantly, arrives before everyone else and stays long after we have gone. I can see it is a labor of love and we should all be very appreciative

of his commitment. That being said, we also need to thank Carol Seitz for the work she had done and for allowing Steve to devote that much time and energy to the community.

We also recognized another major contributor – Joe Voyles. Since the beginning of this year Joe has volunteered countless hours and days landscaping, using his bobcat to remove the old tables and scoop soil from the lakebed. One of his clients, Aztec Stone, donated pallets of rock for the Chapel’s portion of the sea wall. In support of Joe’s efforts friends David & Ellen Lee also donated a generous amount of money toward the project.

In addition we want to thank a number of other folks and BLOKES that have worked very hard for you this year and I apologize if I miss some names, we have had such tremendous support it has been overwhelming. Constantly helping were Chip & LeAnne McDaniel & their son Patrick, Tod Senne, Rigsby Barnes, Tom McDonald, Tevis Stine, Britt Collins, David & Ellen Lee, Jill Voyles, Kay Lee, Tom Weber, Ron Bigham, Bill Hunkapiller, Randy Johnson, John Pendleton and many others. On earth day Brad & Nancy Nessler, Mikal Kitchens and Debbie Peters pitched in to help beautify our neighborhood.

As promised during our January meeting, we then put a motion in front of the membership to allocate a budget of up to $13,750 for Capital & Grounds Improvements for the remainder of 2007. The motion passed. The specific projects have been prioritized by the input provided as members reviewed the proposed options and discussed them with neighbors and Board members. We will keep you informed as the Capital Improvements committee and BLHA Board move forward with your recommendations. (See “Capital Improvements Committee” on page 15 for results of the vote.)

BLHA and the Chapel Board joined forces to put together a wonderful day of Berkeley Lake activities with the Fun Run to benefit Relay for Life and Chapel improvements in the morning, a Children’s Beach Party in the afternoon, and the Spring Fling in the evening. The Fun Run had record attendance, and over at the beach 30 kids cavorted in 10 tons of sparkling new sand and the Spring Fling with a Low Country Boil had close to 100 families; and oh the food - ‘dem mighty good stuff, Chere! Lots of folks stayed to dance and socialize after dinner till the wee hours. Once again, the event paid for itself and a good time was had by all.

For many, this was the first opportunity to see “Pete’s Point” and the recent improvements to the picnic area, including stonework and landscaping. Be sure to check out all the individual articles in this Reflections for each of the events. I must admit when we mobilize different groups within the City, we certainly can put on quite a great day! l

As we are approaching summer my earlier predictions for the fast return to full pool water levels for the lake was wrong. It’s disappointing that we are 10 inches below normal for rainfall so far this year but at least we are not dealing with the wildfires of South Georgia near Berkeley Lake. Hopefully summer thunderstorms will help return our lake to full pool soon.

Our lake biologist, Shan O’Gorman previously of ProPonds, has changed business models somewhat and is now working with Fosters Lake & Pond Management out of North Carolina. BLHA Board of Directors has executed an agreement with Fosters Lake and Pond Management for ongoing lake maintenance and Shan will continue to be our local resource. We look forward to our continued work with Shan as he has done an excellent job of working with BLHA to maintain our lake to meet the needs of swimmers, boaters, fisherman and fish.

Most recently Shan started the yearly fertilization of the lake. This fertilization of the lake helps beneficial algae bloom which will turn the lake a nice green color. This is needed to help reduce the amount of light that penetrates the lake to help control

submergent vegetation. So far this plan has worked fairly well and with the help of people refraining from the introduction of aquatic plants into the lake and our ad hoc herbicidal treatment we continue to have a lake that is mostly free of weeds.

Starting a few weeks before Memorial Day weekend I started conducting water quality tests searching for high levels of fecal coliform. The results of these tests will be posted on the BLHA web site. With the introduction of anti-geese fencing at the dam, as well as other physical changes we are making to our environment, we hope to make Lake Berkeley less attractive to the geese as habitat to control the fecal coliform levels. As our continued efforts to maintain a safe swimming lake we kindly ask that people do not feed geese or waterfowl.

That’s it for May 2007. Now if we can just get some rain it’s going to be a great summer on Lake Berkeley. l

Hopefully you have been around the Chapel recently and noticed some of the improvements going on both inside and outside. New carpet was installed in early May, and thanks to the BLOKES, BLHA, Chapel Board members and other neighborhood volunteers who have generously given their time, a number of projects on the Chapel grounds have been completed.

The boat ramp has been expanded with a new concrete “stamped” section connecting to the asphalt parking lot, along with new rock retaining walls on both sides of the ramp. Several sections of split rail fencing have been installed along the lake leading up to the driveway along with new grass and shrubbery. Susan Hanson’s green thumbs have been busy planting flowers around the Chapel entrance.

This Easter broke the record for the coldest in Berkeley Lake history; however, we still had a large crowd for an inspirational sunrise service overlooking the lake. The Reverend Jim King did his usual fine job leading the worship service.

Sidney Dassinger led the Chapel’s 5th annual Spring Fun Run on May 19. It was the largest run we have had with over 100 runners and walkers. It was also the fastest – see the times below. Thanks to Vanessa Mauroy for designing the race t-shirt, and to Jim Fox who always helps with the production of the shirts. Fun Run winners were:4 Mile Run

The BLOKES prepared a wonderful breakfast for the May service which fell on Mother’s Day. In turn, BLOSOMS prepared an early Father’s Day breakfast for the June 10 service.

Chapel services are held monthly on the 2nd Sunday at 8:30am. Coffee is available at 8:15am and breakfast is served to all around 9:15am. Please join us!

Berkeley Lake Kids’ Beach Blast

Calling All Berkeley Lake Artists

Saturday afternoon, May 19, was a perfect sunny day to help kick off the summer and a great time at the beach for Berkeley Lake kids. The day started out with our annual spring FunRun. In the afternoon, kids gathered at the beach to enjoy swimming, playing games, and eating hot dogs and snacks. Thanks to Laurel Mauroy and Jessica Craigg for helping organize games and Dag Sandbakken for firing up the grills. Many of the kids played in our newly delivered fresh beach sand, stacked high and ideal for building sand castles. There were some familiar faces and many new, young faces, and a good time was had by all! We can look forward to many more fun times at the beach this summer, including the Movies & Campouts (see Calendar).

Incidentally, look closer—that is not a clothes line hanging at the beach!! During the Beach Blast, we hung the Earth Flags that the FROGS created last year at Berkeley Lake’s Earth Day. The flags celebrate the city’s 50 year anniversary, nature, and the environment. If you notice a line of colorful flags at the beach, take time to look at our kid’s great art work and tribute to all of the natural beauty that makes our community special. We hung the flags near the woods, in hopes that the trees will provide protection from the wind and rain. The kids can enjoy them all summer long while they are swimming and playing at the beach. l

BLHA and many volunteers have worked hard this year to improve the grounds that each of us enjoys every day. The BLHA would like to invite all artists living in Berkeley Lake to help us in our endeavor. We have three cement picnic tables that we would like “enhanced” by our local artists.

If you are interested, please submit a sketch that represents our community lifestyle. The BLHA Board will submit the sketches for the membership to vote on at our Fall BBQ. The three winners will then be notified. Once each artist completes and signs their work, BLHA will apply a sealer to protect the artwork from the elements.

What a great way to enhance our beautiful picnic grounds, reflect our lifestyle and be remembered long after we have moved on.

The month of May began with a 9" rainfall deficit; watering restrictions are 3 days a week between midnight and 10:00am. What can be done to keep your plants healthy this summer?

Plants need 1 inch of water per week. ACTION #1 – buy a rain gauge or place a cup or glass in the yard to monitor rainfall. It is best for the plants to receive that water at one time which encourages better root development. Plants do not need to be watered three times a week. Watering late in the day encourages fungus diseases on plants.

Plants that are well mulched lose less water by evaporation. ACTION #2 – mulch all your plants with 1-2 inches of mulch. Shredded leaves from the fall prevent evaporation and provide nutrients for the plants. Pine straw, pine bark, or other products are available. Do not put mulch touching the trunks of plants as it encourages fungus on the bark.

If you have an irrigation system, test the system to make sure heads are working properly. Water on driveways and sidewalks will just waste water. If you water by hand or lawn sprinkler, direct the water to the center of the plant.

Landscape irrigation can use a majority of our water resources. We must all work together to preserve this natural resource. l

As much as I hate to say it, I’ve only fished the lake a few times this year. I’ve even had to cancel our first fishing tournament due to lack of participation. I believe just too many boats are high and dry for us to get enough people out to fish.

June 30th from 5pm until 9pm will be our next tournament and I already have three boats signed up for this event. We did make a few changes to the rules for this year’s tournament. We have moved the limit of bass up to 10 fish with no length limit. Fish from the tournaments will be harvested to help reduce the overall bass population. We have made strong efforts with the stocking of over 50,000 shad over the last few years and the removal of a few thousand bass. While the bass are not literally starving to death as they were a few years ago and are putting on weight, I want bigger and better fish.

Of the time I have spent on the water so far this year, the bass have been confused. I think with the water so low, the bass are having a difficult time finding structure in the form of docked boats, boat docks and even some stumps and brush piles, which are now dry, in which to hide. I have had good luck on my usual

Rapala shad raps and various jerk baits. I have received reports that your typical soft plastic baits are producing good results as well.

By the time this report hits the press the bass should be starting their summer pattern. I just hope that the water rises a few feet so the bass have more space to play in and more structure in which to hide.

So… if you can cast from shore, wade or drag a boat into the lake I wish you good luck on the water. Please keep your speed down and produce no wake. Tight Lines! Dates for 2007 Fishing Tournaments:

2007 has been a busy year for maintenance and improvement activities. For those who were not present at the May 19 membership meeting, the Board of Directors and numerous volunteers have been actively working to improve the Beach and Picnic grounds. As you may recall from our annual meeting in January, we announced plans to form a Capital Improvement Committee of BLHA Members to review the association’s properties and make improvements.

The Volunteers, Committee Members and Board of Directors are pleased to announce the following improvements:Beach Area:

As a fund raiser, BLHA is offering its members an opportunity to make a lasting impression on our community by purchasing an engraved flagstone that will be used in newly designed walkways and patio throughout our picnic area.

For a donation of $65 per stone, you can purchase a flagstone that includes two lines of text with 14 – 1¼" block style characters* per line. You choose what to have engraved – names, dates, phrases. Please note that there are a few qualifications to purchase a flagstone.

The Year in BLOSOMSBy LeAnne McDaniel

I love living in Berkeley Lake. I love the trees, the water, and the winding roads. I’m not really the junior league type, so I would never have guessed that I’d love being in a “ladies’ club,” although the “Organized Society of MudSlingers” part really intrigued me. Happily, the BLOSOMS aren’t a junior league type group. In fact, within the first couple of months after joining the BLOSOMS, I knew (at least by sight) quite a few of my neighbors—WAY more than my husband did. And somehow, with a wave to someone I recognized walking their dog here and an excited introduction to my husband there, my family was knit into the community.

And the BLOSOMS have been very involved in the community again this year. Along with organizing annual activities, such as the Fall Festival, Seniors Luncheon, and the Easter Egg hunt, we met on the 2nd Thursday of each month to socialize and get to know our neighbors.

At our meetings, some of the things we enjoyed were:

Sadly, this may be remembered as “The Year without a Progressive Dinner” – a popular BLOSOMS tradition that we’ll have to resurrect in 2008! Our last meeting of the year was at Linda Craigg’s house where we played “Get to Know You” games (and remember, what’s said at BLOSOMS meetings, STAYS at BLOSOMS meetings).

A big “thank you!” to all the women who helped with the BLOSOMS sponsored activities and to those who were able to join us on Thursday nights—and an enthusiastic “Welcome!” to new and prospective members. We also recognize Beth Gilbert for serving as President and Leigh Ann Griswold for serving as Treasurer this year.

Remember that membership is open to all women living in the City of Berkeley Lake and dues are only $20 for the year. For more information, contact LeAnne McDaniel at 770.797.9579.

Berkeley Lake has lost one of our early residents, Jack Allen.

Jack was born in Forsyth County in 1921. His early years were spent exposed to the hardscrabble life of the depression years.

Jack had a flair for understanding the mechanics of repairing all means of devices, especially motors. He was an accomplished mechanic.

During World War II, Jack was a second class motor machinist mate aboard an LST making five invasions in the Philippines, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Returning after

the War he started and operated for many years an auto repair and body shop on Buford Highway.

His interests and hobbies were varied and numerous – hunting, fishing, gardening and especially music. He was a well known fiddle player and for many years played at various functions including Berkeley Lake, but especially the “Old Chicken House” at Mathis Airport.

His passing is a great loss to his many friends. l

Elena Gilbert (7) and Anna Huntington (8) — both Berkeley Lake residents — donated their hair to “Locks of Love” in May.

The haircuts were performed (free of charge) by Snip-its at the Forum. Each girl donated a minimum of 10 inches. For Anna, this was her very first haircut — unless you count that time when she was 2 years old and big brother, Chris – age 4, decided her bangs needed cutting!

Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Most commonly, these children are suffering from alopecia or hair loss due to chemotherapy treatment for childhood cancer. l

Capital Improvement Committee Points of InterestAt the BLHA Quarterly Meeting held on May 19, the Capital Improvements Committee asked members to vote on several “points-of-interest” improvements. Abridged Version – Reports received from D. H. McClure

In the city during the first quarter of 2007 Officer McClure reported the following incidents:

Commentary follows:January Several complaints in reference to a suspicious person on Lakeshore. We are fully aware of the subject and doing everything we can. We have all spent many hours off the clock attempting to resolve this issue and it has consumed a great deal of my time. Due to the active investigation I do not want to go into details; however if anyone has any questions or concerns about this please contact me.

The officers this month have made several very good arrests. They consisted of traffic violations, DUI, possession of narcotics, and two that were wanted on outstanding warrants. Officer Matesevac also recovered a stolen car that was involved in a car jacking.

Officer Steven Batt started to work for the city this month. He was working his second night when he made his first arrest in the city. Officer Joe Mcmenomy will be off a few months. He tore his ACL along with other things, and will be out several months.FebruaryNo report submittedMarchEarlier this month I was contacted by the contractor for River District. He advised me that they have been having problems with copper theft in their homes that are under construction. Since I already had late evening shifts scheduled for the subjects racing on Lakeshore I asked them to watch that location as well. Since then we have not had a complaint on either incident.

Police ReportAprilFew phone calls this month - pretty quiet month. I received a call in reference to a vehicle traveling too fast on Lakeshore Drive. I do not think it had anything to do with the racers though. The rest of the calls were just questions about different topics.

The biggest problem this month was nature. We had several trees fall onto the roadway and power lines.

I am going to continue to change up the shifts and have officers work late night shifts throughout the month. It seems to be helping as far as traffic related calls. We did have several traffic related arrests this month. l

It is time again for a Berkeley Lake tradition – Berkeley Lake Fantastic Fridays (BLFFs)! BLFFs are a fun, easy way to meet and socialize with your neighbors. All you have to do is bring your own beverage and an appetizer to share. The hosts will provide ice, cups, plates, napkins and plastic ware. Please join us, especially if you have never been to a BLFF, or are new to Berkeley Lake. Please walk or car/boat pool to the BLFFs when possible due to limited parking. BLFFs are an adult social gathering of city residents. Children are welcome where indicated on schedule. The fun starts at 7:00pm.
