REMEMBER When you look back through the course of an athletics season, memorable moments and games stick out all over the place. Whether it’s a spectacular play, a record-breaking individual performance or an upset win, those moments are remembered by the coaches, players and fans that took part in the event. On Dec. 1, Illinois State Athletics fans were treated to one of the most memorable days in recent Redbird Athletics’ history. It was filled with spectacular plays, record-breaking performances and by some accounts an upset win all in the span of a couple of hours. It was a day that Redbird fans had circled on their calendars for months, and it certainly lived up to the hype. When the Illinois State men’s basketball non-conference schedule was released early summer, the game on Dec. 1 against perennial national powerhouse Louisville was put on nearly every fan’s calendar. Whether they were going to make the trip to Kentucky to watch the game in person or watch the game on Comcast SportsNet television, the game was going to feature an exciting Redbird team against the No. 5-nationally ranked Cardinals. With over 500 tickets sold to fans and many more in the stands, the Redbirds were represented well at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville. Illinois State led by as many as 13 points in the first half and took a 33-25 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Cardinals began the second half on a 10-2 streak to tie the game, as the two teams battled the rest of the second half to see who could win the contest. ISU trailed by three points with 18 seconds remaining, and guard Tyler Brown attempted and missed a three-point shot, followed by another with less than one second remaining, allowing No. 5 Louisville to edge the Redbirds, 69-66. The Redbirds held their own with one of the best teams in the country and after the contest, Louisville head coach Rick Pitino heaped praise on ISU first-year head coach Dan Muller and his team. “We’ve all seen Brad Stevens (of Butler) and Shaka (Smart of VCU) the past couple years. That’s one of the brightest first-year coaches I’ve witnessed in a long, long time,” said Pitino to reporters after the game. “Everything they do has great spacing to it, they play hard defensively and they’re very smart.” As fans were commenting on the near-upset by the basketball Redbirds, in North Carolina, the nationally-ranked ISU football had just started its NCAA Division I FCS playoffs second-round game against former three-time national champion and powerhouse Appalachian State. Many considered the Redbirds to be the underdog in that contest playing on the road, but it did not seem to faze the ‘Birds. Late in the third quarter, just as the men’s basketball game ended, the Redbirds took a 28-17 lead over the Mountaineers, thanks to a 32-yard touchdown catch in the end zone by Tyrone Walker from Matt Brown. Much like the Cardinals did in Louisville, Appalachian State rallied in the fourth quarter to tie the game and send it into overtime. ISU, which was appearing in the playoffs for the first time since 2006, was going to have to win in extra time to advance to the quarterfinals. Tied 31-31 after regulation, Illinois State received the ball first and needed only one play to find the end zone in overtime. Brown connected with tight end James O’Shaughnessy on a 25-yard completion for the score. Nick Aussieker’s extra point made it 38-31, with possession moving to Appalachian State. The Mountaineers also struck quickly, needing four plays to score. Jamal Jackson’s four-yard toss to Andrew Peacock made it a one-point game. On the extra point attempt, Illinois State defensive tackle Shelby Harris pushed through the line and got his arm up and blocked Sam Martin’s extra point, sealing the dramatic 38-37 overtime win to move the Redbirds on in the tournament. When both teams returned home, there were stories told of fans rushing from the basketball game to a local restaurant to watch the end of the football game. Those who made the trip to North Carolina were

following the basketball game live on their phones and iPads as the football game got going. Fans in Bloomington-Normal packed local bars and restaurants that were showing the game so they could potentially watch both games as they overlapped. The excitement for Redbird Athletics on that day was the highest I have ever seen it in my 12 years on campus. I was not fortunate enough to be around and watch as Doug Collins thrilled Redbird fans in Horton Field House in the 1970’s, but I can only imagine that the excitement felt that day had to rival some of those moments. It was a day that will be remembered for years to come for its spectacular plays, record-breaking performances and playoff victory. However, it was the just the beginning of an exciting winter season for the Redbirds. There will be plenty more times to watch Redbird student-athletes execute exciting plays, to watch talented players and coaches break records and to hopefully rack up wins over nationally-ranked opponents and advance to postseason play. There’s no doubt it’s an exciting time to be a Redbird fan, so don’t miss out on your opportunity to be a part of something special.

University PresidentDR. AL BOWMAN

Al Bowman became Illinois State University’s 17th president on March 1, 2004, after serving one year as interim president.

Bowman received a bachelor’s degree in speech pathology from Augustana College and a master’s degree in speech-language pathology from Eastern Illinois. He chose Illinois-Urbana for his graduate work, completing a Ph.D. in speech and hearing science. Bowman was a staff speech pathologist at Veterans Administration Hospital in Danville prior to joining Illinois State in 1978 as a faculty member in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology. He was appointed chairperson of the department in 1994 and held the position for eight years, while also serving as director of the Down Syndrome Speech-Language Clinic and continuing to teach a course each semester. Under Bowman’s leadership the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology, now the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, was awarded accreditation by the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association, faculty and staff scholarly productivity doubled, and the master’s program rose in prestige to its current ranking as No. 1 in Illinois. In 2007, Bowman was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award from the College of Applied Health Sciences at Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In the 2002-2003 academic year, Bowman left the chair’s position to serve as Illinois State’s interim provost. He served as interim president of Illinois State from June of 2003 until he was named president in March of 2004. After being named president, Bowman instituted a salary enhancement plan in September 2005 to close the gap with peer institution salaries in order to recruit and retain high quality faculty and staff at Illinois State. More than $2 million has gone into that initiative even though Illinois State has seen a major downward shift in state appropriations for higher education. Bowman also pursued funding for the renovation of the now 50-year old Schroeder Hall, a $17.5 million project which was completed in January 2005. He was instrumental in completing Illinois State University’s first comprehensive campaign, Redefining “Normal,” which raised more than $96 million to enhance Illinois State’s position in higher education. In 2007, Bowman was instrumental in gaining approval for a new $49.1 million Student Fitness and Kinesiology and Recreation Center that opened in 2011. An avid outdoorsman, Bowman enjoys mountain climbing, hiking, skiing, and runs five miles daily. His wife, Linda (Althoff), completed undergraduate and master’s degrees at Illinois State. She is the graduate program advisor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. Their daughter Natalie is a student in the University Laboratory Schools, and daughter Laura graduated from Illinois State in May 2011.

Director of AthleticsGARY FRIEDMAN

Gary Friedman, a native of Deerfield, Ill., became Illinois State’s 10th Director of Athletics in the NCAA Division I era on May 11, 2011. He brings more than 22 years of combined

university and athletic administration experience at Louisville, Central Michigan, East Tennessee State and Illinois. With a background in fundraising, sales and marketing, strategic planning, facility enhancement, sport and budgetary management and community and university relations, Friedman was a natural fit to lead the Illinois State Department of Intercollegiate Athletics into the future. Friedman earned his master’s degree in athletic administration (1992) and his bachelor’s degree in marketing (1989) both at Illinois. During the 2011-12 season, the athletics program has received increased exposure regionally and nationally with the largest television package in school history through Comcast SportsNet Chicago and the expansion of the Redbird Radio Network by securing an affiliate in Chicago. Facilities are also a priority for Redbird Athletics. The exciting Hancock Stadium Renovation project was announced in September 2011, as well as the beginning of the construction to the new men’s basketball locker room. Long-term scheduling has resulted in football games against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents Eastern Michigan (2012), Iowa (2015) and Northwestern (2016) and a men’s basketball series against Northwestern to be played on both campuses. ISU student-athletes have continued to enjoy success during 2011-12. Illinois State track & field star Tim Glover won his second-straight (2011 & 2012) National Championship in the javelin in June and five teams won their respective conference titles. Redbird student-athletes also set new standards in the classroom by posting a 3.15 GPA in the Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 semesters. At Louisville, Friedman was a member of the management team leading a $65 million per year intercollegiate athletics program, supporting 23 sports and more than 500 student-athletes. With the Cardinals, Friedman directed external operations, which included marketing, promotions, development, major gifts and the annual fund, and led fundraising for the design and construction of several major facilities totaling more than $350 million. Prior to Louisville, Friedman served as the associate athletics director for external operations at Central Michigan from 1996 to 2001. Born in Chicago, Friedman and his wife Ra’Tonya - who was crowned Mrs. Kentucky America in 2008 - have two sons, Noa’Sosa and Nehemiah.
