Though Many, We Are One Body! I was once asked, as a matter of urgency, to take over and revive a parish in crisis. It didn’t take long for reality to set in. The parish was clearly a sick body with dysfunctional parts. It was one of the most challenging tasks I have ever handled in the Church. One of my worst experiences happened on my first Christmas morning there. As usual, I woke up very early in the morning; exercised, prayed, reviewed my homily and I felt ready. I would be saying the 8:00 am Mass. As I was leaving for the church at about 7:45 am, I looked out the window overlooking the car park assuming that everything was set and that parishioners were already arriving for Mass. You can imagine my shock when I saw that the parking lot and the church were not yet open. A few people were standing outside the gate waiting. I panicked! I rushed to open the gates and the church. Then rushed back to the house to pick up a few things. Rushed back to the church. There were no sacristans, altar servers, Eucharistic ministers, lectors or choir. I had to setup everything; I asked someone from the congregation to read and chose a hymn for us to sing. That was a Christmas morning for crying out loud. Wow! I still don’t know how I got through that Mass. It became obvious to me what was needed to rebuild that community. Everybody! “No man is an island.” In the same token, no one man is a church. St. Paul perfectly describes the church as a body with many parts. The Spirit of God assigns different gifts to members to help the Church function well: There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone…. Christ is the head of the body, the church…. so in him we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. (1 Cor 12:4-12; Col 1:18; Rom 12:5-9) That body, the church, is at its best when its parts are functioning well, when members are being true to their Christian calling, when we all use our gifts - time, talents and treasures - to serve God. We need everyone’s active participation to build a strong parish. Just like our biological families, our church family thrives and grows when we worship and serve God together with all our hearts and minds.
¡Wow! Todavía no sé cómo lleve acabo esa Misa.

Love. Love has been the focus in a lot of the readings the past couple of weeks, especially at daily mass. Some would argue that love is always the focus, but it has been especially emphasized. Jesus said “Love one another as I have loved you” John 13:34 Love is something we talk about in so many forms but we tend to act poorly with love. I hear people justify love so often talking about loving certain people but not others. Jesus didn't stutter
or give conditions when he said to love one another! I deal with so many broken teens and no matter what, I treat them with love. No matter what we are dealing with in our lives we all crave one thing, love. How do we expect people to be filled with the love of Jesus Christ when the people of the church aren’t filled with love or showing that love? Next time you don’t know how to approach a situation, start with love. Love is always how any situation should be handled. I know it's hard, but it can be done. I struggle just like anyone else but trust me, a little bit of love goes a long way. So, how have you loved your neighbor today? Amor. Entonces, ¿cómo has amado a tu prójimo hoy? Talk to your children about the fine line between obedience and protection
Children learn from an early age that adults are figures of authority — teachers, police officers, bus drivers, babysitters. We need our children to listen to the people who are in charge of them, but this message must be communicated so that children know it’s okay to stick up for themselves too. Adult predators may try to use their authority to gain control over their victims. Children should know that when it comes to private parts, secrets, and things that seem dangerous or wrong, they shouldn’t worry about disobeying the adult in charge, and instead talk to a trusted adult or a parent. For a copy of the VIRTUS® parent’s guide, visit http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx.
