LEG

END

A WORD FROM YOUR ASSISTANT CHIEF OF STAFF (CALL ME FRANK)

I’d like to share a recent team building exercise your MCCS leadership participated in. I took your leaders to the Sandy Hill Lanes bowling center and broke them into three teams of four people. Each member took turns being blindfolded and guided to bowl. The other members were allowed to provide them single-phrase instructions to find their children’s dinosaur bowling aids (which were strategically moved by one of the opposing teams prior to bowling), position them and bowl.

What we all learned was that giving directions to a blindfolded individual, listening to and understanding directions while blindfolded and executing the directions properly can be quite a challenge if we don’t cooperate as a team and provide two way communications. It was interesting how long it took some of us to stop actively executing the guidance without first asking appropriate questions. I also learned that your leaders will go through great lengths (cheating) to set their partners up for success.

I hope you enjoy the photos and see what fun learning about communication can be. I challenge you all to consider the lessons of communication that the blindfolded bowling activity highlighted and to ask yourself: Am I receiving good guidance? Do I understand the guidance given? If not, have I asked for appropriate clarification? How do I know if I have properly executed the guidance given?

Please continue to communicate and take care of one another. Summer can already be a dangerous time of the year without a breakdown in our communications. The Commanding General and I continue to be extremely proud of what each and every one of you does to support our installation!

Thank you,Frank

Many of us at MCCS work to educate Marines, Sailors and families on the importance of resiliency. But what about our own resilience?

As civilians we have our own set of challenges and changes that occur in daily life, both small and large. And let’s face it, these days things change at a dizzying pace. The familiar soon becomes a memory, and suddenly we’re challenged to keep up with new circumstances.

In other words, we often have to adjust to what life brings us, whether we’re ready or not. We may see the changes as good, such as a marriage, a new child or a new home. Or, we may see them as negative, such as the end of a relation-ship or the loss of a loved one. Regard-less, the level of stress we experience can be equally high. Plus, when multiple changes occur at once, the stress can further impact our health and well-being.

When you’re able to bounce back in the face of challenges, you’re being resil-ient. Although it’s not always easy to process the “curves” that life throws you, the good news is that you

can follow these practical steps to learn how to be more resilient in the future.

Follow these steps:

Adjusting to Life’s Challenges When setbacks and hard times occur in your personal or professional life, it can be very tough to pick up the pieces and go on. But there are proactive steps you can take to better roll with the punches.

Let go of what you can’t control Many of the swirling events in life are outside of our control. It’s wise to try to adopt a positive attitude toward new circumstances.

Take some action Spend time figuring out what to do next. Make a list of the potential ways you could deal with the current issue. Weigh your options and create a step-by-step plan for action.

Reach out for feedback & support Share your concerns with a friend or loved one. You might get some good ideas on how to respond to a hardship.

Manage the Stress Big changes in life usually go hand-in-hand with stress. Losing your appetite, ignoring exercising and not getting enough sleep are all common reactions to a crisis situation. Instead, be sure to make time for activities that keep you healthy. Practice relaxation techniques, meditate, or use other stress-reducing tactics. Keep up with your regular exercise routine. Stay involved with your favorite hobbies. Also get enough sleep, and eat a balanced diet.

Adjust, let go, take action, reach out, manage stress and be ready for change

Be Ready for (and Cope With) Change Sooner or later, changes in life will abruptly toss you out of your comfort zone. You may need to respond to unexpected health issues or a work reorganization or financial trouble. While being in one’s comfort zone can be the path of least resistance, it won’t be permanent. One of the best ways to maintain resilience is to accept that change will ALWAYS come. Here are some helpful tips to accept change:

When possible, limit the changes If you know that certain changes are coming, such as an office move or a wedding, don’t pursue too many other initiatives at the same time.

Be patient with yourself Remember that even the most resilient of people need time to process a new reality.
