have allowed us to create anadditional section in ThirdGrade. The current enroll-ment is 60 students. With-out this grant, there wouldbe two sections with 30students in each classroom.

With it, we are able to pro-vide three classrooms with18 to 20 students in eachclassroom. This reductionin class size coupled withour excellent third gradeteachers, a sae and nurtur-ing environment, a chal-lenging curriculum, andhigh academic standardsshould get this group o third grade students o to agreat start in the intermedi-ate and upper grades!

LTC Art FestivalOn March 23rd, the

LTC High School Art Fes-tival was hosted by MercerCounty at Monmouth Col-lege. The SCHS Art Clubparticipated in an on-go-ing work o art by the con-temporary artist.

Artworks by all theschools were judged, andthe students attended thefnal judges’ critique in theevening. SCHS entries rep-resented the classes heldboth semesters: ceramics,sculpture, drawing, paint-ing, photography, print-making, and design.

Even though our schooldistrict has earmarked a

number o areas or reduc-tion next year, we believethat by making smart andresponsible reductions wecan continue to provide theexcellent level o service toamilies and students that

we have in the past.Some class sizes may in-

crease a bit next year. Someprograms may not be und-ed as well. We may not haveas many supplies. Someextracurricular and athletictrips may not take place. We

will not have as many teach-ers, teacher aides, programsponsors or coaches. Some

lights may have to be shuto and some thermostatsmay have to be kept a littlelower. We will be unable topurchase new textbook se-ries or new computers orour labs; but in general, thelevel o teacher instructionand the expectation or stu-dent achievement will notbe diminished. The boardapproved a plan they hope

will maximize savings whileminimizing the direct im-pact on students. Core aca-

watching the end product.In every case the teachersand sponsors have workedmany hours in promoting the proper etiquette, tech-niques and attitudes that isa major part o their activity.In other words, THE JOUR-NEY IS MORE IMPORTANTTHAT THE FINAL RESULT.

We have an experi-enced, well educated sta that is dedicated to ev-ery student. We recently completed the junior highschool ISAT tests. Again,our junior high sta is sec-ond to none in preparing all students or the week o

tests. The journey allows usto explore many new areaso interest and inormationthat the students need orthe test and beyond. I youhappen to see a junior highschool teacher please thank them and congratulatethem. Each year our highschool juniors are placedin the same position during the PSAE testing. And onceagain our sta is dedicatedin exposing all students to

the data and inormationthat is needed to improve.

I state a case or thetesting as it pertains to

the ‘journey’ our studentstake. Our entire schoolcommunity is charged

with improving test scores,curriculum and the overallacademic climate. As this‘journey’ evolves our stu-dents are the recipients o the expertise, insight andknowledge our sta pos-sesses. Our students arein a wonderul position! Iask all parents/guardiansto maintain a high level o support or all students,insisting on quality home-

work, complete all assign-ments on time and becomemore involved in our ac-

tivities. I this relationshipcontinues to grow and im-prove w e will not ail.

Reduction in spending does

not mean reduction in servicedemic areas should not beaected.

As a matter o act,thanks to a ederal grant wereceived this year, in at leastone area o our curriculum

we look to enhance pro-grams. The Title IID – En-hanced Education throughTechnology Grant provided$239,000 to District #100 this

year or use in establishing an improved K-12 Math andScience Program. Althoughthe program will have its ini-tial ocus at the high school

where we plan to oer ad-ditional coursework begin-ning in August o 2011, thegrant also provides or tech-

nology enhancements andproessional developmentopportunities throughoutthe district.

For example, throughthis grant, the District hasbeen able to purchase 1) anew wireless network oreach building 2) over 100computers, including threemobile labs or student andteacher use 3) new sotware4) 18 smart boards and pro-

jectors 5) graphing calcula-tors 6) high speed broad-

band internet access and7) instructional training or

teachers. We are very excitedabout this new program andthe tools we have been ableto purchase to help with itsimplementation. Although

we will begin to use thehardware and sotware rightaway, ull program imple-mentation is not scheduleduntil August o 2011.

There is no questionthat, like all area schools, we

will have reduction issues tostruggle with next year. Andhonestly, the savings plan theschool board implementedor next year contains many one-year reductions that

will be difcult to repeatagain in FY12. However, theteachers and the administra-tors in Stark County 100 arecommitted to providing thestudents and amilies o theDistrict with the same qual-ity educational services they have received in the past andmaybe, by 2011, the State o Illinois will begin to have itsfscal house in order and theunding we depend on orcritical services can be re-stored.
