    Home Loan Demand dropsData released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics has shown that home loan demand dropped in January. However, the figures for January are still high against

    historical figures.

    According to the data the number of dwelling commitments

    approved throughout January fell by 3.5%.

    But it was not just owner occupied dwellings that had a

    reduction. Purchase of new dwellings reduced by 6.5%, and

    the purchase of established dwellings (investment) reduced

    by 3.1%.

    Unsurprisingly, the number of first home buyer commitments

    as a percentage of total occupied housing finance

    commitments fell to 14.2% in January 2015 from 14.3% in

    December 2014.

    Unlicensed Concreter FinesA Thirlmere concreter operating without the proper licence

    has been ordered to pay fines and compensation of almost

    $100,000.

    Kevin Barry Rouland, 44, trading as Walrus Concreting, falsely

    claimed to be a licensed corporation and contracted to perform residential building work.

    Mr Rouland contracted to undertake $18,000 of concreting

    work which he was not licensed to do, and in addition

    demanded an unlawful deposit for the work, an offence

    under the Home Building Act.

    The Parramatta Local Court also heard that Mr Rouland was

    hired to build a timber deck and was paid over $7,600 for the

    raw timber. The timber was never delivered and Mr Rouland never showed up to complete the work. The Court ordered

    that he re-pay the total sum to the consumer.

    Mr Rouland did not attend Court and in his absence was

    issued nine fines as well as court costs and compensation to

    the total value of $97,950.

    NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe congratulated

    the work of Fair Trading investigators and said it sent a

    warning to other contractors engaged in deceitful practices.

    If you are trying to cheat the system we will catch you, said

    Mr Stowe.

    Fair Trading continues to monitor compliance in the market

    place and we have been working with consumers and

    industry to identify and prosecute anyone undertaking

    residential building work who is not properly licensed to do

    so.

    any building contractor.

    Australian households have largest debts in the worldAustralian households have the worlds biggest debts

    and would be left exposed in the event of another global

    financial crisis.

    Australia leads the way globally when it comes to household

    debt, as a result of large mortgages, credit cards and

    personal loans, according to research by Barclays.

    Barclays chief economist Kieran Davies says Australian household debt averages 130 per cent of GDP, compared

    to 78 per cent across the advanced world, Fairfax has

    reported.

    With high levels of leverage by world standards, where debt

    is concentrated in the household sector, we see this as a vulnerability in the event of another global shock, Davies

    said.

    Household debt in Australia is made worse by our preoccupation of buying real estate, compared to other

    countries.

    Examining the distribution of household debt, Australia

    has the highest gearing of our large sample of countries,

    although it was practically a tie with Denmark (129 per cent

    of GDP), Davies said.

    Households in Switzerland were the second most indebted in the world at 120 per cent, followed by the Netherlands.

    Coastal city benefitting from Sydney investor rushGenerous yields, affordable commercial real estate and

    changing perceptions about its economic outlook are

    helping Wollongong attract Sydney investors.

    According to John Kersten, co-principal of Raine & Horne

    Commercial Wollongong, the citys yields of nine per cent

    are almost impossible to find in Sydney thanks to a surge in

    the construction of new commercial assets in the capital.

    Low interest rates are also working in favour of local

    investors, with banks and fund managers struggling to

    compete with the yields generated by Wollongongs

    commercial real estate market, he said.

    Mr Kersten said the growing number of out-of-town investors

    also reflects the changing perceptions of Wollongongs

    economic prospects.

    Sydney investors are recognising that Wollongong is

    transitioning from a steel-dependent city to an important

    knowledge services centre, international trade hub and a

    leading university city, he said.

    The Illawarra is the third-largest regional economy in New

    South Wales, worth in excess of $16 billion in goods and

    services, and with its close proximity to major Australian cities such as Sydney and Canberra, it is an ideal place to live,
