McGrath Estate Agents chain cashes in on hot marketReal estate agencies are reaping the benefits of Australia’s housing boom, with the McGrath Estate Agents chain last month posting a record sales figure of $1.46 billion.Chief executive John McGrath said the results were reflective of the strength of the Sydney property market, where auction clearances were at their highest ever level of 87.5 per cent on the last weekend of March.“Typically a surge in supply will bring clearance rates down unless demand is so high that the market can sustain the extra stock. And that’s what happened in Sydney. And it was on an election day,” Mr McGrath said.March 2015 sales figures for the 62-office network came from 1281 sales, 14.6 per cent higher than the previous record.Mr McGrath said the most active buyers were couples and families that were upgrading to bigger properties, while investors were also busy.“While activity in the low to middle range of Sydney’s market has been very strong during this boom period, the prestige end is yet to experience real price growth despite an increase in transactions particularly in Sydney’s north shore and eastern suburbs,” he said.Mr McGrath added that the lower dollar had made real estate cheaper for Chinese buyers and expats.“That coupled with a strong share market, and a healthy financial services sector, I believe will have a positive and direct impact on prestige property demand and price growth,” Mr McGrath said.

Save Sophia’s LegCarley and Chris Jans, of Woonona, are facing having to sell their family home in order to help their beautiful daughter – Sophia, 8 months old.The Jans family need help to raise $250,000 in order for Sophia to have the pioneering surgery she needs to save her leg.Sophia has a very rare deficiency in her limb called Fibular Hemimelia. This condition “means that she was born with no fibula in her right leg while her tibia is shortened, compared to her left leg, and her leg points down and she only has three toes,” said Mrs Jans.Unfortunately, in Australia the only treatment for this condition is amputation. Carley and Chris have found Dr Paley, of the Paley Advanced Limb Lengthening Institute in Florida, who has successfully performed the reconstruction surgery needed on 2 other Australian children. The treatment includes an initial nine-hour operation to correct the deformity and then three months of limb lengthening treatment. Sophia will then be able to travel back home

to Australia, where she will have to wear an external fixator for three to six months before returning to Florida for further treatment.Carley and Chris are now faced with having to sell their home in order to fund the necessary treatment. A home that is still unfinished, after being gutted by fire two years ago, due to ongoing battle with insurers.
