UglinessA Cultural HistoryGRETCHEN E. HENDERSON

‘Ugliness is in the eye of the beholder – or is it?Gretchen Henderson’s book . . . asks this centralquestion and answers it in an engaging andexciting way. Accessible and amusing, you need to read it to find out whether ugliness is only acultural or a brain construct!’ – Sander L. Gilman,Distinguished Professor of the Liberal Arts andSciences and Professor of Psychiatry, EmoryUniversity, and author of Illness and Image,Sexuality: An Illustrated History and Smoke: A Global History of Smoking

‘Ugly as sin’, ‘ugly duckling’, ‘rear its uglyhead’. The word ‘ugly’ is used freely, yet it is a loaded term: from the simply plain andunsightly to the repulsive and even offensive, definitions slide all over the place. Hoveringaround ‘feared and dreaded’, ugliness bothrepels and fascinates. But the concept ofugliness has a long lineage that has hauntedour cultural imagination.

In this riveting book, Gretchen E.Henderson explores perceptions of uglinessthrough history, from ancient Roman feasts to medieval grotesque gargoyles, from MaryShelley’s monster cobbled from corpses to theNazi Exhibition of Degenerate Art. Coveringliterature, art, music and even Uglydolls,Henderson reveals how ugliness has longposed a challenge to aesthetics and taste.

Henderson digs into the muck of ugliness, moving beyond the mere opposition tobeauty, and emerges with more than aselection of fascinating tidbits. Following ugly bodies and dismantling ugly sensesacross periods and continents, Ugliness: A Cultural History draws on a wealth of 1

Roger Luckhurst sifts materials fromanthropology, folklore, travel writing, colonial histories, long-forgotten pulpliterature, B-movies, medical history andcultural theory to give a definitive shortintroduction to the zombie, exploring themanifold meanings of this compelling, slow-moving yet relentless monster.

roger luckhurst is Professor of ModernLiterature at Birkbeck, University of London. He has written and edited many books on film, horror, science fiction and gothicliterature.

ZombiesA Cultural HistoryROGER LUCKHURST

‘Roger Luckhurst’s wide-ranging history of this cultphenomenon is a richly detailed and eminentlyreadable story of the different shapes the complex, colonially driven monster takes in its century-longjourney through the imperial American sub-zeitgeist– including its surprising global resurrection in the new millennium. Everyone from Zora NealeHurston and Frantz Fanon to 1950s pulp comics, esoteric space scientists and Robert Kirkman had a hand in fashioning the imaginary creature weknow today as the zombie.’– Victoria Nelson, author of Gothicka and The SecretLife of Puppets

The zombie has shuffled with dead-eyed,remorseless menace from its beginnings inobscure folklore and primitive superstition to become the dominant image of the undeadtoday. In contemporary visions of globalapocalypse, such as the films 28Days Later, I Am Legend and World War Z and the pheno -menally successful tv series The WalkingDead, the zombie has reached its apotheosis.Zombies have infected the cinema of nearlyevery nation, from France to Australia,Argentina and Brazil to China and Japan.

This absorbing history tracks zombiesfrom their emergence in nineteenth-centurywritings about the Caribbean, through their slow transmission and mutation into the popular pulp fictions of America in the1920s and ’30s, to the arrival of the cinematiczombie, and reveals how after 1945 thewalking dead swarmed into comics, pulpnovels, B-movie cinema, horror fiction andvideo games.

Ghosts also delves into the history of thespirit on page and screen. How did HoraceWalpole’s pioneering Gothic novel The Castleof Otranto of 1764 lead to the 2007 hit filmParanormal Activity? Classic ghost tales, fromAnn Radcliffe’s works to the chilling shortstories of M. R. James and Stephen King’s The Shining, reveal how the real meaning of ghosts has shifted over the centuries. Wide-ranging, informative and featuring 60 chilling, unearthly images, this book will appeal to the very wide audience for the supernatural.

GhostsA Haunted HistoryLISA MORTON

Praise for Trick or Treat: A History of Halloween:

‘If you want to know anything at all about thesubject, you ought to find it in Trick or Treat.’ – Susan Hill, The Times

‘Well-written and illustrated, informative andentertaining.’ – Fortean Times

In the supernatural history of the world thereare few things more common than the beliefin ghosts. From the earliest recorded writingssuch as the Epic of Gilgamesh to twenty-first-century ghost-hunting tv shows, ghosts havebeen part of almost every time and everyculture . . . and yet there’s very little evidenceto support their existence.

Ghosts: A Haunted History is a historicaland global exploration of these mysteriousapparitions. It asks: What exactly is a ghost? Are poltergeists, wraiths and revenantstechnically ghosts? How does ‘ghost’ relate to‘soul’? And how many different kinds of ghostare there? It visits the spirits of the classicalworld, including the Egyptian five-part souland the first haunted-house comedy play,Mostellaria by Plautus (254–184 bce). Weencounter the frightening phantoms of theMiddle Ages – which might incinerate priestsor devour children – and the nineteenth-century rise of Spiritualism, essentially a religion devoted to ghosts. Ghosts areeverywhere: from India’s bhuta to the HungryGhost Festival in China and Mexico’s LaLlorona legend, as well as the Bell Witch ofthe American South and ‘the most hauntedhouse in England’, Borley Rectory. 3

Lewis CarrollPhotography on the MoveLINDSAY SMITH

As Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland celebratesits 150th birthday, Lewis Carroll remains oneof Victorian culture’s most prominent andcompelling figures. Few readers, however, have had the chance to explore the extent of Carroll’s passion for photography, a newtechnology that was gaining popularityduring his lifetime. Lewis Carroll: Photographyon the Move follows the journey of Carroll’sphotography in tandem with his writing.

Beginning in the glass studio Carroll had built above his college rooms at ChristChurch, Oxford, this book traces hisfascination for photographs through his visits to London theatres, his annual trips to the seaside town of Eastbourne and hisextraordinary excursion to Russia in 1867.Many of the preoccupations that makeCarroll’s writing so remarkable are alsopresent in his photography, particularly hisinterest in the boundless imaginations ofchildren. Carroll was also an avid collector ofphotographs and, on occasion, commissionedprofessional photographers to set up studiosittings. Photography, a medium for whichCarroll is not primarily known, remained a lifelong attachment for him.

This engaging and beautifully illustratedbook reveals an unseen side of the renownedwriter. It examines nineteenth-century visualand literary culture in accessible prose, givinga valuable and cogent account of Carroll’svisual and literary career.

these seemingly minor, insignificant aspectsof our houses and streets become links to a broad and fascinating history.

House NumbersPictures of a Forgotten HistoryANTON TANTNER

‘Sherlock Holmes famously observed that smalldetails are often valuable clues to something larger. In similar fashion Anton Tantner, a historicalsleuth, shows that the history of house numberssheds light on the Enlightenment as well as on the rise of the surveillance state.’– Peter Burke, Emeritus Professor of Cultural History, University of Cambridge

House numbers are small things that appearquietly on the walls, gates and porches of ourhomes and places of work. They seem to havecome from nowhere and are now taken forgranted in everyday life. But house numbershave their own history – one that is retrieved, assembled and presented here, for the firsttime, in vivid images from around the world.

House numbers started their lives in a greyarea between the military, the tax authoritiesand early police forces. Anton Tantner’sengaging, intriguingly quirky book is achronicle of the house number, from itsintroduction in European towns in theeighteenth century through the spread of thenumbering system in the nineteenth centuryto its global adoption today. It also revealsthat there was often opposition to thisconvention – those living at their allottedaddresses have not always been too happyabout their houses being given numbers.

House Numbers is full of original researchand is extensively illustrated, with photo -graphs showing historic house numbers and addresses, from the low – Nought,Strand-on-the-Green in London – to the high: 1819 Ruston, Louisiana. Its narrative will alter the way you walk around a city, as 5

When Neil Young left his native Canada in 1966 to move to California, his journeysparked a leap in musical artistry that wouldcome to resonate around North America. Hisfascination with American locations – fromthe Santa Monica Mountains to the DeepSouth – profoundly influenced his eclecticmusical style and helped to shape the story of his generation.

Neil Young: American Traveller shows how place looms large in Young’s songs: Los Angeles is portrayed as the home ofuptight business and lost innocence, whileSan Francisco is seen as the retreat Youngneeded from the excesses of the musicindustry. These locations helped craft thesinger-songwriter’s distinct style, which led to his popularity as a solo artist and as amember of Buffalo Springfield, Crazy Horseand Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

Moving from the Canadian prairies toYoung’s adopted Pacific home, Halliwellexplores how place and travel affected one ofNorth America’s most prolific recording artistsof all time. Alongside discussion of Bob Dylan,Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, the GratefulDead, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Devo, Pearl Jam and other fellow travellers, he considers howYoung’s personal journeys are entwined with a powerful feel for the American land scape. The book spans Young’s career as a singer-songwriter from his musical collaborations to his film projects, recent memoirs and hisinterest in technologies new and old.

Neil Young: American Traveller will appealto the many fans of this iconic, challengingand constantly changing musician.

Jimi HendrixSoundscapesMARIE-PAULE MACDONALD

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame describes Jimi Hendrix as ‘arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music’.He played at a time when electric amplificationextended the scope of the instrument to three-dimensional, urban space. Bob Dylantheorized that Hendrix found new spaces in his songs.

Jimi Hendrix: Soundscapes shows how Hendrix created music in particular places – from the California coast to New York City, his beginnings in Seattle and his end in London. Marie-Paule Macdonald shows Hendrix to be a city-dweller, nighthawk and wanderer who favoured the modest surroundings of ordinary buildings and public places and who loved to stumble upon seedy basement bars and intimate clubs – to both visit and perform in. She explores how the rumble, uproar, babble and discord of the city inspired and becamepart of Hendrix’s powerful repertoire, andhow he commissioned an architect and asound engineer to create an urban recordingstudio to capture reverberation, bounce, sustain and echo.

Hendrix led a collective musical revolutionand performed in innovative, ad-hoc spaces:open-air festivals, inexpensive under-usedmusic halls, dilapidated psychedelic ballroomsand any other reverberant spaces he could find.Jimi Hendrix: Soundscapes offers fascinatingnew insight into Hendrix’s resounding talentand the way he exploited the physical placesand noise around him to create his distinct, innovative sound.

Easy Riders, Rolling Stones delves into thehistory of twentieth-century Americanpopular music to explore the emergence of‘road music’. This music – blues, R&B androck – took shape at pivotal moments in thishistory, made by artists and performers whowere, in various ways, seekers of freedom.Whether journeying across the country, breaking free from real or imaginary confinesor in the throes of self-invention, they incor por -ated their experiences into scores of songsabout travel and movement, and created anew kind of road culture.

Starting with the Mississippi Delta bluesand tracking the emblematic highways of roadmusic and the life of movement it represented,John Scanlan identifies ‘the road’ as the key to an uncompromising existence and aninspiration for musicians such as Jim Morrisonand Bob Dylan. These artists also drewstimulus from the Beat movement, which was equally enthralled with the possibilities of travel. Quintessentially American ideas

YosemiteKATE NEARPASS OGDEN

In 1851 a small militia trekked throughCalifornia’s Sierra Nevada Mountains anddiscovered a site so spectacular that, over the succeeding century and a half, manymillions followed in order to experience thesplendour of Yosemite. October 2015 will seethe 125th anniversary of the establishment of Yosemite National Park. In Yosemite, KateNearpass Ogden provides a comprehensiveand unique scientific and cultural history of this remarkable area of natural beauty, exploring everything from its geologicalorigins to its nineteenth-century discoveryand the creation of the magnificent park thatit is today.

Known for its unusual rock formations,breath-taking vistas and variety of waterfalls,Yosemite is visited by nearly 4 million peopleeach year. The area was actually named due to a misunderstanding: although the valleywas known to its native Miwok inhabitants as Ahwahnee (‘place like a gaping mouth’),Anglo-American visitors mistook anotherMiwok phrase, yosemite (‘there are killersamong them’), for the great valley’s name. Its history features a cohort of colourfulcharacters, including Scottish-born naturalistJohn Muir, early inn-keeper James MasonHutchings and mountain man and parkguardian Galen Rowell. Today, however, the valley most commonly hosts an array of painters, photographers, hikers, campersand tourists from across America and aroundthe world.

Yosemite traces the park’s formation, exploration, exploitation and preservation.Ranging through the natural and human 11

association of his work with the occult. Meanwhile, passionate campaigns weremounted to save and restore Hawksmoor’schurches, reflecting the strange hold his archi-tecture can have over observers. There is surelyno other body of work in British architecturalhistory with the same capacity to intrigue andinspire, perplex and provoke as Hawksmoor’shas done for nearly three centuries.

owen hopkins is a writer, historian andcurator of architecture at the Royal Academyof Arts where he is manager of the Archi -tecture Programme. He is the author ofReading Architecture: A Visual Lexicon (2012)and Architectural Styles: A Visual Guide (2014)and regularly leads a variety of walking toursof London architecture.

From the ShadowsThe Architecture and Afterlifeof Nicholas HawksmoorOWEN HOPKINS

‘A valuable new chart of Hawksmoor’s potent andmysterious creations. Its originality lies in the wayOwen Hopkins traces the influence of the greatBaroque architect on our present moment. Writtenwith the verve of an enthusiast and the rigour of ascholar.’ – Iain Sinclair, author of London Orbital,Lights Out for the Territory, American Smoke and Lud Heat.

Nicholas Hawksmoor (1662–1736) is considered one of Britain’s greatest architects. He was involved in the grandest architecturalprojects of his age and today is best known forhis London churches – six idiosyncratic edificesof white Portland stone that remain standingtoday, proud and tall in the otherwise radicallychanged cityscape. Until comparativelyrecently, however, Hawksmoor was thought to be, at best, a second-rate talent: merely SirChristopher Wren’s slightly odd apprentice, or the practically minded assistant to Sir John Vanbrugh. This book brings to life thedramatic story of Hawksmoor’s resurrectionfrom the margins of history.

Charting Hawksmoor’s career and thedecline of his reputation, Owen Hopkins offersfresh interpretations of many of his famousworks – notably his three East End churches –and shows how over their history Hawksmoor’sbuildings have been ignored, abused, altered, recovered and celebrated. Hopkins also chartshow, as Hawksmoor returned to prominenceduring the twentieth century, his work caughtthe eye of observers as diverse as T. S. Eliot,James Stirling, Robert Venturi and, mostfamously, Peter Ackroyd, whose novelHawksmoor (1985) popularized the mythical12

The Last of the LightAbout TwilightPETER DAVIDSON

‘What an astonishing book this is: a cartography ofdusk, an illumination of twilight as it has found itsways into the art, literature, dreams, moods andmetaphors of Europe and beyond. Beautiful andsubtle in its tracings, it combines memoir, memory,place-writing and cultural history by degrees sofine as to be imperceptible.’ – Robert Macfarlane, author of Landmarks, The OldWays: A Journey on Foot and Mountains of the Mind.

The Last of the Light is a meditation on twilightin the Western arts and imagination, inthought, painting and literature. We enter a multifaceted twilight world, filled with the gloom haunted by Romantic poets andpainters and the twilight lives of minority and‘overshadowed’ communities. The melancholyof smoky English autumn evenings is balancedby the midnight sun of northern Europeansummers; the oppressive heat of August inmid-twentieth-century Spain is ranged againstthe shadowy grandeur of winter in London.

Peter Davidson touches on diverse literaryand artistic traditions as he considers theborderlands of the light and the dark: the‘invention of evening’ in Roman antiquity; the science of the Victorian evening sky; the urban twilights of Whistler, Poussin and Tiepolo.

A meditative account of the atmosphericand shadowy in art, literature and thought by the author of The Idea of North, this will appeal to all those who are interested in ambiguous, penumbral zones in art, philosophy and writing.

Although vampiresevoke an age-old mystery, they also embodythe uncer tainties of the modern world: thesuperficial fulfilment of desires in a digitalage and the anonymity of life in the globalmetropolis.

Whether you’re a fan of classic vampire tales or prefer the recent additions to the canon,The Rise of the Vampire is a fascinating look atour collective obsession with the undead.

The Rise of the VampireERIK BUTLER

‘Just to say the word “vampire” now is to makesome readers shudder, and not for the rightreasons. But reading a new study – Erik Butler’sThe Rise of the Vampire – we realise that what isinteresting isn’t just the vampires themselves but why they appear in the first place . . . Butlerbelieves, amusingly, that if Twilight’s dark heartwas properly understood, it would be banned fromhomes and schools everywhere. And he’s right. Inmany unintended ways, the bloodless vampires onoffer to teenagers right now are the scariest of all;maybe not in themselves but in what they sayabout a world that sucks them up.’ – The Times

‘For those with a taste for the supernatural, this isan excellent guidebook. Dracula probably wouldhave enjoyed it.’ – Washington Times

‘A masterful compendium of ideas.’ – New YorkJournal of Books

Before Bella and Edward there were The LostBoys and the gang in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Before True Blood came Dark Shadows andAnne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles. Before themall there was the most famous vampire of alltime: Count Dracula, immortalized by BramStoker in 1897. Whether characterized asurbane aristocrats, animalistic monsters orbrooding teenagers, as creatures of the day or of the night, vampires have captured thepopular imagination for centuries. Today they are a worldwide phenomenon, featuredin everything from Jamaican reggae songs to Japanese and Korean horror films.

Lindow considers thepanoply of trolls that surround us – from theMoomins, the Brothers Grimm and Three BillyGoats Gruff to cartoons, fantasy novels andsocial media – and their sometimes troublingconnotations in the contemporary world.

Covering Norwegian music and film andeven Yahoo Finance chat rooms, Trolls is a fun and fascinating book about these strangecreatures.

TrollsAn Unnatural HistoryJOHN LINDOW

‘Lindow writes with wit and warmth, but this is also a learned and sometimes unsettling studywhich brings to light some unexpected facets of the troll phenomenon more generally.’ – Times Literary Supplement

‘[An] excellent overview of the history of trolls . . . Trolls: An Unnatural History weighs in at only144 pages, but never feels too brief . . . a coherent, insightful and informed exploration of a fascin -ating subject that deserves a wider audience.’ – Fortean Times

Trolls lurk under bridges waiting to eatchildren, threaten hobbits in Middle-earthand invade the dungeons of Hogwarts. Oftenthey are depicted as stupid, slow and uglycreatures, but they also appear as comfortingcharacters in some children’s stories and asplastic dolls with bright, fuzzy hair. Today, thename of this fantastic being from Scandinaviahas found a wider reach: it is the word usedfor homeless people in California and slangfor the antagonizing and sometimes cruelindividuals on the Internet. But how did trollstravel from folktales to the World Wide Web?

To explain why trolls still hold our interest,John Lindow goes back to their first appear -ances in Scandinavian folklore, where theywere beings in nature living beside a pre -industrial society of small-scale farming and fishing. He explores reports of actualencounters with trolls – meetings others foundplausible in spite of their better judgement – and follows trolls’ natural transition fromlegends to other domains in popular culture.Trolls, Lindow argues, would not continue to

‘A Brief History of Death has a great deal to offer: a historian-magpie’s collection of hundreds of engaging topics that readers can dip into.’ – The Guardian

‘After the spate of near-death and out-of-the-bodyexperience books comes this refreshing step backto examine the nature of the death experienceculturally, historically, psychologically andpersonally . . . Recommended reading as anantidote to modern life.’ – Fortean Times

As humans, death – its certainty, itsinevitability – consumes us. We make it the subject of our literature, our art, ourphilosophy and our religion. Our feelings and attitudes towards our mortality and itspossible afterlives have evolved greatly fromthe early days of mankind. Collecting theseviews in this topical and instructive book, W. M. Spellman considers death and dyingfrom every angle in the Western tradition, exploring how humans understand and come to terms with the end of life.

Using the work of archaeologists andpalaeoanthropologists, Spellman examineshow the interpretation of physical remainsgives us insight into prehistoric perspectiveson death. He traces how humans have diedover the centuries, both in the causes ofdeath and in the views of actions that lead todeath. He spotlights the great philosophicaland scientific traditions of the West, whichdid not believe in an afterlife or see thepurpose in bereavement, while also castingnew light on the major religious beliefs thatemerged in the ancient world, particularly

Praise for 50 Facts You Need to Know: usa: A Tour through the Real America:

‘This thoughtful tour is a rich catalogue of whatmakes up the “world’s most powerful but leastunderstood nation”.’ – New Statesman

Everyone knows the great American Dream:that America is the land of free enterprise, offering men and women without inheritedadvantages the chance to get ahead throughhard work and self-reliance. Yet The GreatAmerican Speech offers an alternative vision, one enshrined in the country’s mostmemorable speeches, which have becomemonuments in its national memory andliterally in the nation’s capital. This otherAmerican dream is not about competition or getting ahead, but instead argues forequality and cooperation, echoing thecountry’s founding documents.

Beginning with two contrasting visions set out by early settlers in the New World,Stephen Fender goes on to explore how thisother dream has been kept alive in publicspeeches to live audiences, from inauguraladdresses by early presidents such as JohnAdams and Thomas Jefferson, throughAbraham Lincoln’s arguments – both logicaland passionate – for the Union, and on tomass appeals for wider understanding by JohnF. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. Fendersuggests that these opposing visions of thecountry’s moral purpose are fundamentallytwo free-standing visions of national identity.

He considers the ‘great American speech’in popular culture, illustrating how it pops up18

As a notable philosopher, critic anduniquely imaginative thinker, Benjamin’sessays offer a fascinating critique of earlyphotography. On Photography WALTER BENJAMIN

Edited and translated by Esther Leslie

Praise for Walter Benjamin, Critical Lives series:

‘A brilliant digest of Benjamin’s life . . . It draws on a mass of texts, including his accounts of aprivileged Berlin upbringing and travel diaries.[Leslie] presents a definitive portrait of Benjaminthe materialist, lingers on his obsession withchildren’s books, and makes excellent use ofGerman sources to detail his movements andfinances.’ – The Independent

Walter Benjamin’s essay ‘A Short History ofPhotography’ (1931) made bold statementsabout photographic pioneers such as DavidOctavius Hill and Nicéphore Niépce, and thesocial and historical context of their work. This first selection of Benjamin’s writings on photography includes a new translation of this influential essay as well as a range ofBenjamin’s other writings, both publishedand unpublished, some of which aretranslated into English for the first time here.

Esther Leslie’s introduction coversBenjamin’s writing on early photographicmethods and aesthetics; his analysis of the commercial studio photography of the ‘decadent’ bourgeoisie; the use ofphotographs in scientific research; and other innovative photographic methods such as the ‘auraless’ images of Eugène Atget and the ‘new visions’ of August Sander and Germaine Krull. Leslie discussesBenjamin’s take on the evolution of photog -raphy into a modern form, the universalfascination with the seemingly simplepostcard – an interest dating back toBenjamin’s own childhood – as well as 19

Igor Stravinsky was a celebrity composer in an increasingly celebrity-obsessed age. He was a true modern, a man of his time.Born in Russia, Stravinsky spent most of his long life in exile. While he swiftly becamea cosmopolitan figure, the exile’s sense ofdistance, loss and nostalgia left a powerfulmark on his work.

Igor Stravinsky tells of a colourful life lived against the backdrop of the twentiethcentury’s wars and revolutions. Stravinsky’sextraordinary music reflected and shaped his own times, and resonates with audienceseven today.

While he argues that Barthes may best becategorized as a journalist, essayist and critic,he emphasizes the social preoccupations inBarthes’ writing: how Barthes continuallyanalysed the self and society. In doing so,Stafford also provides a fascinating account of the intellectual scene of post-war France. This cogent introduction to a vital figure will interest students and specialists alike.

Roland BarthesANDY STAFFORD

‘Andy Stafford’s engaging biography sheds newlight on the complex interrelation of Barthes’ life and work, proposing striking and subtleinterpretations of a multifarious intellectual andpersonal trajectory. Stafford succeeds excellently in loosening Barthes from the grip of theoreticalideologies . . . A major contribution to theunderstanding of Barthes as a theorist and as a writer.’ – Patrick Ffrench, Professor of French Language and Literature, King’s CollegeLondon, and author of The Time of Theory: A History of ‘Tel Quel’ (1960–1983), The Cut: Reading Bataille’s ‘Histoire de l’oeil’ and After Bataille: Sacrifice, Exposure, Community

Roland Barthes (1915–1980) is one of France’smost important writers and theorists of thesecond half of the twentieth century. Hisvolumes of essays have been translated into many languages. His work is hugelyinfluential in the fields of semiotics, structuralism and numerous areas of thehumanities. Yet Barthes’ career, hamperedby illness in early adulthood, was beset by alarge number of false starts. After the SecondWorld War, he started a career in the FrenchDiplomatic Corps, tried to become a soci -ologist and lexicologist and worked briefly as a popular theatre activist; he was also akeen amateur musician, painter, reluctantMarxist, dilettante philosopher and editor.Yet none of these activities defines Barthes;even his academic career was highlyunorthodox and he has not always beentaken seriously. So how do we classify him?

Andy Stafford offers a clear-sighted,readable account of Barthes’ work and life.

When Alexander the Great’s army invaded the valley of the Indus River in the fourthcentury bc, it was wholly unaware that thisregion of northwest India had once been thecentre of a civilization worthy of comparisonwith ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. TheIndus civiliza tion flourished for half amillennium from about 2600 bce to 1900 bce, when it mysteriously declined and eventuallyvanished. It remained invisible for almost4,000 years, until its ruins were discovered inthe 1920s by British and Indian archaeologists.Today, after almost a century of excavation, it isregarded as the beginning of Indian civilizationand possibly the origin of Hinduism.

More than 1,000 Indus settlements coveredat least 800,000 square kilometres of what isnow Pakistan and India: the most extensiveurban culture of its age, with a vigorousmaritime export trade to the Persian Gulf and cities such as Ur. explores the heterogeneous mix of attitudesand style among Russia’s architects. Thisbook is essential reading for anyone whowants to understand the origins of thecountry’s contemporary architectural culture.

RussiaModern Architectures in HistoryRICHARD ANDERSON

From one of the largest empires in worldhistory to the dominant republic of the Soviet Union and ultimately to the RussianFederation as we know it today, this bookoffers a comprehensive account of Russia’sarchitectural production from the latenineteenth century to the present, explaininghow architecture was both shaped by, and a material manifestation of, Russia’s rapidcultural, economic and social revolutions.

This book attends to the country’s complexrelationship to global architectural culture, exploring Russia’s role as an epicentre ofarchitectural creativity in the 1920s with theadvent of Rationalism and Constructivism, and as a key protagonist in the Cold War.Challenging received interpretations ofmodern architecture in Russia, RichardAnderson shows how Russian architecturalinstitutions departed from the course ofmodernism being developed in capitalistnations, and how Russia made a lasting yet little-known impact on territoriesextending from the Middle East to CentralAsia and China.

Soviet Russia is at the core of this book.Anderson brings the relationship betweenarchitecture and socialism into focus throughdetailed case studies that situate buildingsand concepts in the specific milieu of Sovietsociety, politics and ideology. Drawing onextensive research, Anderson provides areappraisal of the architecture of the Stalinera and the final decades of the ussr. Modern gardens and those parks that alsodraw on garden traditions seek to forge new, innovative spaces. Sometimes this meansinvoking or manipulating earlier genres andmethods of place-making, but new ones – and new materials – are also invented.

The Making of Place provides an accessibletour of modern garden landscapes that givesnon-designers as well as specialists a new viewof the created outdoor world around them. The book will appeal to all those interested in the long history and significance of themodern garden and landscape, as well asspecialists in the fields of garden history and landscape architecture.

A Philosophy of PessimismSTUART SIM

There are many reasons to despair at the state of the world today: climate change andglobal warming; widespread ‘humanitariandisasters’ caused by war, famine and politicalcorruption; religious intolerance and thegrowing influence of fundamentalist belief;political terrorism; racism and discriminationagainst ethnic minorities; the list could go on and on. Reflect on such phenomena at any length and it can be very difficult not to become deeply pessimistic about humanexistence.

Yet for some, pessimists are simply refusingto acknowledge the progress that humankindhas made over the centuries, especially withregard to the technological advances of themodern era. To these people, it is almostwilfully contrary not to be uncompromisinglyoptimistic about our prospects for the future. The glass, for some, is always half-full, butperhaps pessimists have the more realisticworld view. To counter the optimists and theirrosy outlook, it is necessary to keep the darkside of human affairs at the forefront of ourconsciousness; perhaps, after all, it is morerational to adopt an essentially pessimisticattitude. Throughout history a significantproportion of the world’s thinkers have takenthis view, insisting that we face up to the moredesperate aspects of the human condition.Philosophers, theologians, authors, creativeartists and even scientists have collectivelycontributed to a discourse of pessimism, and they have found a ready audience for their message across all cultures.

How pessimism has developed, and itsmultifaceted nature, forms the subject of this30

The Encyclopaedia of Liarsand DeceiversROELF BOLT

‘Strangely addictive. A reader is apt to feel repelledby a hoaxster’s audacity and heartlessness yet intensely curious about how and why the deed was done.’ – Boston Globe

‘A cornucopia of curiosities, Bolt’s A to Z of 150 case studies is a raconteur’s dream. Brimmingwith tales of forgeries, fakers, the faithless and thefacile, it pays homage to the weird and sometimeswonderful . . . Bolt, as ringmaster of this menagerieof malcontents and mischiefs, allows us to glimpseoutside the confines of the everyday. It is utterly diverting.’ – The Field

George Washington may have never told a lie, but he may be a unique case – our historyis littered with liars, deceivers and counter -feiters. The Encyclopaedia of Liars and Deceiversgathers 150 of them, each entry telling theintriguing tale of the liar’s motives and thepeople who fell for their lies.

Roelf Bolt travels from ancient times to the present day, documenting a hugeassortment of legerdemain: infamous quacks, fraudulent scientists, crooks who committed‘pseudocides’ by faking their own deaths, and forgers of artworks, design objects andarchaeological finds. From false royal claims, fake dragon’s eggs and bogus perpetualmotion machines, to rare books, mermaidskeletons and Stradivari violins, Bolt revealsthat almost everything has been forged orfaked by someone at some point in history. The short, accessible narratives offer biog -raphies and general observations on specificcategories of deceit, and Bolt captures animpressive number of famous figures –

Made under the hot sun and blue skies ofCalifornia, ‘Light and Space’ art serves as anearly model for some of the most radical andground-breaking art forms of the last century:immateriality and the site-specific installationas well as Situationist and participatory art.The movement’s fascination with colour andwith its manipulation in space serves as a verydifferent kind of minimalism – a movementoften thought of as simply the embodiment of austere, mathematical abstractions.

Another Minimalism is the first book torecognize and examine the influence of thisregional subset of minimalism on leadingartists of the current generation, includingCarol Bove, Tacita Dean, Olafur Eliasson andSpencer Finch. The book seeks to reorient and refine received ideas about minimalism’simpact on subsequent generations, whereinthe dominant New York and Europeanparadigm has overshadowed that of the moreexperiential West Coast strain, developed byartists such as Robert Irwin, James Turrelland Maria Nordman around the same time.

As curator and writer Melissa E. Feldmannotes, the now prevalent use of glass, mirror, natural and electrical light, fog and otheroptical materials in geometric sculpture and room-sized installations (or congruouseffects in photography, video and film) build on the phenomenological terrain first explored by California Light and Space artists of the 1970s.

This fascinating and original study willappeal to all those interested in contemporaryart, and especially to those interested in newways of conceptualizing its history. 32

‘Iconoclast’ and ‘maverick’ are perhaps thetwo epithets most commonly attached toRobert Altman, a director who constantlyresisted boundaries and genres. Throughouthis career Altman tested the limits of whatcan and should be done in film, refashioningfilm noir in The Long Goodbye, the western inMcCabe & Mrs Miller, psychological drama in Images, science fiction in Quintet andromantic comedy in A Perfect Couple.

Frank Caso examines the development of Altman’s artistic method, from his earliestdays in industrial film to his work as a tvdirector, feature film-maker and later returnto television work. Altman is a director whosefilms people ‘recognize’, but what exactly arethe distinctive elements of an Altman film?Caso identifies and analyses more than twentystylistic features that Altman favoured, someof which can be observed at the beginning ofhis career – the movable camera and the useof Christian imagery. The book also examinesanother aspect of Altman’s films that counter -points the offbeat comedy: the predominanceof violence, murder and death. These elementsnot only contributed to the naturalism andironic outlook of his work but provided amythic, otherworldly undertone to many of his films. These elements, combined with his masterful technique, created the‘Altmanesque’ style.

Featuring 75 illustrations, Robert Altmanwill appeal to fans of this distinctive andground-breaking American auteur.

‘That rare thing: a book that is needed . . . Thisrichly illustrated and critically engaged book offersa very welcome attempt to outline the story of Irishart from 1910 to the present . . . An engagingoverview for the common reader, as well as astarting point for further critical debate.’ – Apollo

‘With a cunning eye for precise detail, Barber notonly writes the story of art in Ireland, North andSouth: she opens up the contested and unfinishedlabour of formulating country, time and identity in Irish art.’ – Sean Cubitt, Goldsmiths College,University of London

fionna barber is Reader in Art History and Principal Lecturer for Contextual Studies in the Manchester School of Art.
