Hello, IRHA!
On behalf of the conference team here at EIU, it is our honor to welcome you to the 2017
Illinois Residence Hall Association Leadership Conference! We want to express our excitement on
your arrival and your decision to spend your weekend off, here at Eastern Illinois University. We
hope you enjoy this conference and make long-lasting friendships with your delegation and your
fellow leaders throughout the state.
IRHA is about the people who come, without you, there would be no IRHA and no confer-
ence. You are what will make this conference more than amazing. You will make this conference
unforgettable. So, we invite you to lose your voice screaming chants, eat your weight in Dr. Seuss
themed snacks, and help others learn by teaching them the knowledge you are bringing from your
university.
Keep your mind open, listen, and take notes. We invite you to take as many pictures as you
can so that one day, when you are graduating and looking back at your time during your under-
grad, you look back at this conference and remember how it sparked something within you. We
challenge you to leave your comfort zone; this is a place of learning, acceptance, and most im-
portantly, growth.
If you are a CC, we wish you the best of luck in board room. We challenge you to speak for
your institution and present your bids with confidence! If you are a new delegate, use this confer-
ence as a stepping stool in your discovery as a leader. We challenge you to meet new people and
learn as much as you can! And if you are a returning delegate, use your experience to build others
around you. We challenge you to take in this conference slowly and enjoy it!
Welcome to the 2017 IRHA Leadership Conference, we cannot wait to see Oh the Places
You’ll Lead!
With much IRHA love,
Sara and Jaso

Welcome Welcome to IRHA! On behalf of the Illinois Residence Hall Association Executive Board, I would like to express our excitement for you attending the 40TH annual IRHA conference! We are extremely happy that we have this opportunity to gather and celebrate 40 years of IRHA and all of the accomplishments our member schools have made this year. Both the Conference team and Executive Board have been working hard to make sure this is the best IRHA yet. We truly hope you enjoy this once in a college experience. To all of the first time delegates, I hope that this conference will change your life, much like it has changed mine. The Executive board and I ask you to take in all of the cheers, great energy, and educational opportunities offered this weekend. I encourage you to take chances, meet new people, learn something new and have fun! For those of you returning, I hope your experience is better than your first and you tru-ly enjoy your weekend. I hope you are able to learn something new, and I know you will be able to help us show the first time delegates what this is about and help us cre-ate an even more amazing experience for them and show them why we love IRHA so much! Especially to those of you graduating this year, we want you to take this all in and remember it is perfectly okay to shed happy tears at the banquet. I also would like to thank every ICC and NRHH CC here and all they are doing to rep-resent their institution. I wish you the best of luck on bids and look forward to our time in boardroom. Finally, I want to specifically thank the exquisite IRHA executive board and the confer-ence team. Lots of hard work, tears, and planning have gone into making this confer-ence happen. It is without them, and all of the people who have come before us that 40 years of IRHA would not have been able to happen. As a last note to all of the delegates, this weekend will go by a lot quicker than you can imagine. Please remember, this is only the beginning of your journey in leader-ship and we can’t wait to see all the places you will lead! “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” –Dr. Seuss IRHA luv, Greta Dieter Illinois Residence Hall Association President

Understanding Privilege and Identity
Diversity
Diversity
Being a leader, you need to experience meeting and working with other people from all around the world. Identity and Privilege are similar to thing one and two, you need to be able to understand other people, work well with them and be able to relate to them. Make sure to swing by this pro-gram to practice judgment-free listening and learn about more open, constructive conversations. Sometimes, being a good shoulder to lean on can be the best co-star of all.

The Privilege Walk
Diversity
As student leaders, it is put on our shoulders to represent and cater to all students from all walks of life. However, as human beings we often tend to neglect the fact that there are underprivileged people that may not be able to relate to us, or vice versa. This poses an obstacle when planning events or reaching out to students. The Privilege Walk is an activity where you can learn more about what privilege is and how it has affected different people. If you think everyone around you has the same privilege, join us. We will prove you wrong.

Study Now or Forever Hold Your C’s
Personal Development
Many students have trouble adjusting to the academic rigor of college. In this presentation entitled, "Study Now or Forever Hold Your "C's," we will talk about how to give residents academically useful skills and the tools to succeed in the college classroom. The first portion of this presentation will focus on how and why to program to residents in order to help them gain these skills. The second portion will focus on our own learning styles, and how we can apply them to both our academics as well as our personal and pro-fessional development.

The Macro-effects of Mi-croaggressions and Stereotypes Diversity
Adapted from the Microaggression Project, this pro-gram will inform, educate, and hopefully inspire audi-ence members to speak out against microaggres-sions – seemingly innocuous, everyday exchanges that impart degrading messages to members of a marginalized group. "Don’t Dilute Diversity: More Effective Ap-proaches to In-clusion Program-ming Diversity
Typical diversity programming in residence halls doesn’t always meet the needs of our students in terms of making them feel included, welcome, and heard. How can we as student leaders in the resi-dence hall approach diversity programming in a way that will truly reach and impact our students? In this program, we will propose ways in which we can do so, as well as discuss the importance of inclusion programming in a residence hall. Attendees will be introduced to basic concepts of diversity, learn how students can be impacted by programming, and what they can do as student leaders to make their pro-grams impactful.

Melting Pots and Salad Bowls Diversity
The purpose of this program is to engage partici-pants in dialogue about the importance of recog-nizing and respecting cultural differences. Students will be challenged to think about “culture” as a broad term; they will be asked to discuss culture as it relates to different populations, different back-grounds, and culture differences that exist as part of the campus environment. For example, the cul-ture within a residence hall may be influenced by the types of living learning communities that are in that building, or halls may have different cultures based on their design: private vs. community bath-rooms, suites vs. standard rooms, apartment build-ings vs. residence hall, etc. Participants will be asked to consider ways they can create more in-clusive programming, residential education, and community development to ensure that students and living communities are engaged in a way that recognizes and best suits the culture.
