Welcome!

Whether you are a current and returning ASD family or enrolling for the very first time, a heartfelt welcome to the 2014-2015 school year!

This fall ASD welcomes over 300 new students to the American School of Dubai. For many of you Dubai represents your first overseas experience; for others another international posting or even your permanent home.

One of the most amazing distinctions of ASD is our vibrant and supportive community. A plethora of parent involvement and student engagement opportunities are available to support your child’s learning, enrich your life and allow our school to be the best it can be. There are many ways to get involved and whether this is your first or fifteenth year, we encourage you do so. Your involvement not only contributes to the success of your child(ren), but will enrich your life and contribute to the success of ASD.

The Advancement Office serves our school in a number of ways, including school wide internal and external communications, community relations, alumni programs and development/fundraising. We work to connect and inform families, alumni and friends to further strengthen and support the mission of the school. As one of only a few not-for- profit K-12 schools, our story is unique. Engage with ASD’s social media, read the weekly (emailed) ASD News, attend the many community-school events so generously organized by parent volunteers, read school publications, know your school and get involved.

Message from The SuperintendentDear ASD Parents and Students,

It seems only yesterday that as a community we said our farewells to one another as the 2013-2014 school year came to a successful conclusion. Now, it’s a pleasure to have the opportunity to extend you a warm welcome to the beginning of what we anticipate to be another phenomenal year of learning at ASD.

Over the last several years, our school community has come together around our Mission and Core Values. The mission of challenging and inspiring each student to achieve their dreams and to become a passionate learner prepared to adapt and contribute in a rapidly changing world is both aspirational and inspirational and continues to demand that we bring our very best work together as a community each and every day.

Compassion, excellence, integrity, respect and responsibility are not simply five words that can be found on the walls across the campus. These Core Values continue to guide our interaction in a manner that will again transcend the multitude of different nationalities represented among our student body, faculty and staff at ASD. The ASD Core Values must serve to guide our actions, decision-making and the sustained quality of interaction we will enjoy with one another throughout the 2014-2015 school year.

The Weekly ASD NewsletterThe ASD News is the weekly electronic school newsletter that is published every Thursday during the school year. It contains important weekly announcements and is archived each week on the ASD GO Community Portal home page.

Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place through service projects, arts and crafts and building friendships. Facilities, Parking and Security at ASD

The ASD Driver Do’s

n DO enter and exit campus at the marked entry points only.

n DO drive in the designated traffic flow direction - clockwise around campus.

n When waiting, DO allow sufficient room for another car to move past.

n DO use the roundabout to change direction only.

n DO respect reserved spaces for handicapped and visitors parking.

n ASD community members follow the instructions from the security team.

ASD Driver Don’ts

n Do not exceed 10 km/hour.

n Do not leave double parked vehicles unattended.

n Do not honk; horns are for emergency only.

n Do not park on curbs or landscaped areas.

Do not drop-off or pick-up children on moving roads or at bus stops. This applies to First Al Khail Street and the RTA bus lane.

ASD is a secure campus. Visitor’s ID is required and available by submitting photo identification.

ASD supports a safe and secure learning environment for all. Student drop-off and pick-up safety is a key element to providing a safe campus environment. Behavior and activity at student drop-off and pick up should reflect the ASD Core Values and contribute to a successful traffic flow pattern.

Last May over 450 members of the ASD community gathered at Atlantis, The Palm for an evening of grand entertainment and fun(draising). The ASD Gala, A Night of Shining Stars, was an outstanding success thanks to the generous support and participation of parents, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of ASD. Thank you once again to our gala sponsors and committee whose efforts resulted in over AED 340,000 in proceeds to support ASD. Funds are being used to enhance, enrich and extend learning opportunities for students. This year’s impact includes developing the new MS/HS Video Lab and Recording Studio as well as adding extracurricular activities for students this fall.

The ASD Athletic Department offers school sports and competitive interscholastic teams to middle school and high school students, including Under 14 sports, Junior Varsity and Varsity sports. Visit the ASD Athletic website to sign up.

School UniformsASD students wear a uniform to support our school’s core values of respect, responsibility and excellence. As a school located in the United Arab Emirates, our ASD uniform is designed to respect our host country’s culture and like similar private, college-preparatory schools in the United States, reflect our high expectations for student excellence. An ASD students’ appearance in the uniform should be neat, clean and respectful. Full details on uniforms and dress code policy are available in division student handbooks.

P.E. KitsStudents taking physical education wear a P.E. uniform known as the P.E. ‘Kit’. Made of quick-dry fabric, the uniform supports movement, mobility and comfort. P.E.
