There will be only one mass at 9:00 a.m. All Church offices will be closed.

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY

Next weekend our parish will celebrate World Mission Sunday. This year we are invited to reach out and help build the Church in Mongolia, the world’s youngest Catholic Church, as well as local churches throughout the Missions, in the most remote areas across our world. Through the work of these churches, and their witness to Christ, the poor receive practical help and experience God’s love and mercy, his hope and peace. Please keep the Missions in your daily prayers. Please come prepared next weekend to give generously in the collection for the Society for the Propogation of Faith. For more information, please visit www.IAmAMissionary.org.

FAITH COMMUNITY NURSING

During this next six-month period, the Faith Community Nursing Ministry’s Health Team will focus on three special interests that you have led us to consider:

1) Responding to all inquiries for assistance and offering help with referrals

2) Making special calls to those who have experienced the loss of a loved one

3) Developing Eucharistic Ministers for the homebound of all ages

Please pray for us so that we can lovingly help and care for one another as Jesus asked. We have an Angel Squad that stands ready to help where needed. If you feel called to do this, please don’t hesitate to contact the FCN Ministry at [email protected] or 203-637-3661 x375.

NOTES ON MUSIC

This Sunday morning we welcome to the 10:30 a.m. Mass oboist BJ Karpen. She plays the prelude from John Rutter's Suite Antique. At the offertory, she joins the choir in a setting of psalm 23, also by John Rutter (born 1945). As a communion meditation at the 10:30 a.m. Mass we hear an a cappella arrangement of the hymn Down to the River sung by members of our choir.

Jr. Choir begins rehearsals on Wednesday, October 22nd from 5:00 - 5:30 p.m. in church. Open to fourth through seventh graders, boys and girls learn basic rhythm and music reading skills, note recognition (what all those lines and spaces mean!) and sing great music. The Jr. Choir will be featured on our December 6th "Winter Portrait" concert. For more information contact Music Director Mark Kaczmarczyk at [email protected]

Distinguished Speaker Series

Nationally acclaimed author and presenter Ginger Katz, Founder of the "Courage to Speak" organization and author of "Sonny's Story", a reflection on substance abuse and it's affects on our children, is our second guest on our Distinguished Speaker Series Sunday, October 26th. Join us immediately following the 10:30 a.m. Mass for light refreshments in the Lucey Parish Hall for Ginger's powerful presentation geared especially for families with children. For more information visit our website at www.stcath.org.

FAITH AND YOUR FAMILY

“How to Make Sunday Holy”

Imagine what your Sunday would be like if you and your family decided to “Keep Sunday Holy.” What kinds of things would you do? What kinds of things would you refrain from doing? Are there any new traditions you might start? Are there any old family traditions that you might resurrect? When you plan how you will spend your time, you prioritize by putting the most important items first and building around them. Make a conscious effort to try to take care of shopping or household needs during the week or on Saturday. That doesn’t mean you can’t run to the store for milk or prescriptions; it means that you’re making an effort to restrict your activities on Sundays to be with those who are most important to you – God and your family.

GREENWICH CATHOLIC SCHOOL

All are invited to attend an Open House at Greenwich Catholic School on Tuesday, October 21 at 9:00 a.m. GCS offers programs beginning with Little Angels (age 3) and Pre-K (age 4) up to Grade 8. For more info or to RSVP, call 203-869-4000 or visit www.gcsct.org.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

Greenwich World Hunger Association

St. Catherine’s Social Justice Committee supports the work of the Greenwich World Hunger Association and invites you on Thursday, October 16, as we celebrate World Food Day and draw attention to the GWHA projects currently underway in developing countries. The Harvest Party will be held at the Tomes-Higgins House, 216 East Putnam Ave., just west of Christ Church on the same campus, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Come to hear representatives from the field describe their life-altering projects in developing countries and enjoy some wine and cheese and some inspiring conversation. RSVP to Sally Kao Jackson at [email protected] or 203-918-5282.

WOMEN’S GUILD

World Food Day is coming up! Thursday, October 16th - all over the world.

St. Catherine's Women's Guild will be making lentil soup on Friday, October 17th starting at 10:00 a.m. and ending when we finish packing up 100 quarts.

Please join us for some fun in the kitchen as we prepare the soup together and enjoy it for lunch, too. We must sample it, after all! Contact Mary Lou Campisi if you wish to help at [email protected]. We will sell it after the Masses on October 18 and 19.

The proceeds will be sent to Greenwich World Hunger Association in conjunction with World Food Day. This is the organization founded by Carol and George Lutz and friends back in 1976. It is still helping people all over the world to alleviate hunger, to enable them to feed themselves and become self-supporting. Current projects include work in Haiti, Kenya, Peru, Nigeria, Guatemala, Mozambique and the Philippines. Yes, this little organization in Greenwich, CT is all over the globe and lifting people out of poverty one village at a time, one special project at a time.

For more information on GWHA please visit: www.greenwichworldhunger.org. Donations will be greatly appreciated.

WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES

The World Meeting of Families will be held in Philadelphia, September 25-27, 2015, and it is hoped that Pope Francis will be in attendance! The Diocese of Bridgeport will be organizing a group to attend this exciting event. Details are still pending, but we want to know who will be joining us so that we may contact you once a package is confirmed. BIRTHRIGHT OF GREATER STAMFORD

Volunteers are needed to help support women with unplanned pregnancies to bring their babies to term. At the moment, there is a shortage of volunteers who provide pregnancy tests, listen to client concerns, and connect women with medical, financial, legal and other needed resources. Ability to commit three hours/week in the office is desirable and schedules are flexible. Training is provided.

Birthright is also in need of new infant clothing (up to 12 months) and diapers (sizes 1-2). Donations of used maternity clothing are also appreciated.

Please call the office at 348-4355 if interested. Birthright is grateful for all of the help that Catholic parishes in this area provide so as to enable them to help women to choose life for their unborn children.

THE THIRSTING

The THIRSTING CATHOLIC ROCK BAND, last Sunday, fulfilled their mission “to inspire you to love and follow Jesus Christ through the Catholic Church, the Eucharist, Mary and the Rosary” here at St. Catherine of Siena beginning with Daniel Oberreuter sharing his gift of music and words of inspiration at the 7:30 a.m. Mass and finishing at 8:00 p.m. with the hall filled to capacity with the youth and parents of our parish being enlightened by the thunderous, vibrating and inspiring music of the band. Gratitude to Msgr. Detscher for all of the support he had given from the very beginning to allow this momentous event to happen. Much thanks to John and Lenny DeCsepel and Dr. Lisa and Bob Rooney for sharing the comfort of their homes with the 8 band members. The task of feeding the band members throughout the day along with serving pizza to 375 people was magnificently orchestrated by Emma Doring – thank you! Thank you to Janis Pataky, Betty Lungren, Mark Kazmarczik, Steve Coffey, Jim Coffey, and the many parents and catechists for helping to make this day a huge success.

THE POPE’S 10 TIPS FOR A HAPPIER LIFE

1. “Live and let live.” Everyone should be guided by this principle, he said, which has a similar expression in Rome with the saying, “Move forward and let others do the same.”

2. “Be giving of yourself to others.” People need to be open and generous toward others, he said, because “if you withdraw into yourself, you run the risk of becoming egocentric. And stagnant water becomes putrid.”

3. “Proceed calmly” in life. The Pope, who used to teach high school literature, used an image from an Argentine novel by Ricardo Guiraldes, in which the protagonist – gaucho Do Segundo Sombra – looks back on how he lived his life.

4. A healthy sense of leisure. The Pope said “consumerism has brought us anxiety”, and told parents to set aside time to play with their children and turnoff the TV when they sit down to eat.

5. Sundays should be holidays. Workers should have Sunday’s off because “Sunday is for family,” he said.

6. Find innovative ways to create dignified jobs for young people. “we need to be creative with young people if they have no opportunities they will get into drugs” and be more vulnerable to suicide, he said.

7. Respect and take care of nature. Environmental degradation “is one of the biggest challenges we have,” he said. “I think a question that we’re not asking ourselves is: ‘Isn’t humanity committing suicide with this indiscriminate and tyrannical use of nature?’”

8. Stop being negative. “Needing to talk badly about others indicates low self-esteem. That means, ‘I feel so low that instead of picking myself up I have to cut others down,’” the Pope said. “letting go of negative things quickly is healthy.”

9. Don’t proselytize; respect others’ beliefs. “We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyses: ‘I am talking with you in order to persuade you,’ No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing,” the Pope said.

10. Work for peace. “We are living in a time of many wars,” he said, and “the call for peace must be shouted. Peace sometimes gives the impression of being quiet, but it is never quiet, peace is always proactive” and dynamic.
