What are we doing in and through the Liturgy? How can the way we are

doing Liturgy be enhanced?

(Rev. Msgr. Kevin Irwin)

Page 35: LITURGY IN MY LIFE. PART 1 LITURGY AS PRAYER The goal of liturgy is not perfection The goal of liturgy PRAYER is PRAYER

• All Liturgy is Pastoral– Liturgy is always about and for the

people.

• All Liturgy is Personal– Every act of liturgy is a personal

appropriation of what is celebrated.

• All Liturgy is Paschal– Every enactment of the liturgy is the

actualization of the paschal mystery.

Page 36: LITURGY IN MY LIFE. PART 1 LITURGY AS PRAYER The goal of liturgy is not perfection The goal of liturgy PRAYER is PRAYER

• All Liturgy Concerns Participation– Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy

states that the full, conscious and active participation in the liturgy is demanded by the very nature of the liturgy itself---use of all our senses.

• All Liturgy is done in and through the power of the Holy Spirit– Invocation of the Holy Spirit in Prayers

and especially the Eucharistic Prayers.

Page 37: LITURGY IN MY LIFE. PART 1 LITURGY AS PRAYER The goal of liturgy is not perfection The goal of liturgy PRAYER is PRAYER

• All Liturgy Proclaims the Word of God– Proclamation of the Scriptures at

all liturgical rites—we have received a more generous share in the treasures of the Bible at the liturgy.

• All Liturgy is Paradoxical– Liturgy is about enabling us to view

the world through paradoxical lenses, and it is about celebrating our faith’s paradoxes in sacred signs, symbols, words, and gestures.

Page 38: LITURGY IN MY LIFE. PART 1 LITURGY AS PRAYER The goal of liturgy is not perfection The goal of liturgy PRAYER is PRAYER

So what about our future and the upcoming

Page 52: LITURGY IN MY LIFE. PART 1 LITURGY AS PRAYER The goal of liturgy is not perfection The goal of liturgy PRAYER is PRAYER

How can I prepare for these changes?

Living the Liturgy ‘as a bridge’

Being a person of prayer Living in the moment Letting God direct your life

Page 53: LITURGY IN MY LIFE. PART 1 LITURGY AS PRAYER The goal of liturgy is not perfection The goal of liturgy PRAYER is PRAYER

We can remember Msgr. Irwin’s points about celebrating Liturgy:

All Liturgy is Pastoral All Liturgy is Personal All Liturgy is Paschal All Liturgy Concerns Participation All Liturgy is done in and through

the power of the Holy Spirit All Liturgy Proclaims the Word of

God All Liturgy is Paradoxical

Page 54: LITURGY IN MY LIFE. PART 1 LITURGY AS PRAYER The goal of liturgy is not perfection The goal of liturgy PRAYER is PRAYER

PART 3PART 3

WHAT ARE WHAT ARE THESE THESE

CHANGES?CHANGES?

Page 55: LITURGY IN MY LIFE. PART 1 LITURGY AS PRAYER The goal of liturgy is not perfection The goal of liturgy PRAYER is PRAYER

What are these changes?

We have already experienced some: Communion Rite, vessels, preparation of the gifts, etc.

New revisions will be mostly in texts: prayers, responses, music texts, etc.

Nothing to worry about

Page 56: LITURGY IN MY LIFE. PART 1 LITURGY AS PRAYER The goal of liturgy is not perfection The goal of liturgy PRAYER is PRAYER

•New USCCB Document

–Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship November 2007

•Guidelines provided to DIRECT those preparing for the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy according to the current liturgical books (ordinary form of celebration of the Eucharist)

Page 57: LITURGY IN MY LIFE. PART 1 LITURGY AS PRAYER The goal of liturgy is not perfection The goal of liturgy PRAYER is PRAYER

• Singing together in church expresses so well the sacramental presence of God to his people

• Music is a sign of God’s love for us and our love for him

• Very personal and yet it has a communal dimension

• Faith grows when it is well expressed in celebration

• Singing is one of the primary ways that the faithful participates actively in the Liturgy

Page 58: LITURGY IN MY LIFE. PART 1 LITURGY AS PRAYER The goal of liturgy is not perfection The goal of liturgy PRAYER is PRAYER

• The primary role of music in the Liturgy is to help the members of the Assembly to join themselves to the action of Christ and to give voice to the gift of faith

• St. Augustine: “You should sing as wayfarers do—sing but continue your journey. Do not grow tried, but sing with joy.”

• St. Augustine: “He who sings, prays twice.”

Page 59: LITURGY IN MY LIFE. PART 1 LITURGY AS PRAYER The goal of liturgy is not perfection The goal of liturgy PRAYER is PRAYER

SOME OF THE LANGUAGE CHANGES

“The Lord be with you.”

“And also with you.” becomes

“And with your spirit.”

Sample wording of the Eucharistic Prayer

On the day before he was to suffer he took bread in his holy and venerable hands, and with eyes raised to heaven to you, O God, his almighty Father, giving you thanks he said the blessing, broke the bread and gave it to his disciples, saying: TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT, FOR THIS IS MY BODY, WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU.

Page 73: LITURGY IN MY LIFE. PART 1 LITURGY AS PRAYER The goal of liturgy is not perfection The goal of liturgy PRAYER is PRAYER

In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took this precious chalice in his holy and venerable hands, and once more giving you thanks, he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying:

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU AND DRINK FROM IT, FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD, THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT, WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR MANY FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS. DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.”
