A winner of the Kirkham Plate

(1000m) last October and running placings in the Golden Gift (1100m),

Reisling Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and the Percy Sykes Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at

two, the valuable filly was scratched from heat one after rearing in the air

with attendants unable to coax her into the gates.

A frustrated Dubois immediately called a halt to the homebred filly’s

career and, speaking to ANZ Bloodstock News later, revealed that See You

Soon would be covered by Arrowfield Stud’s five-time Group 1 winner The

Autumn Sun who is out of Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare Azmiyna.

“It is a shame with a filly like her and, of course, we could have spelled

her but I don’t want to waste a year by trying again,” Dubois said.

“It’s a bit quick but it’s September now and we can’t waste any time,

which is why after the first time she refused (in the Silver Shadow) we

made some inquiries about who would be the right stallion for her and

she’s going to be served by The Autumn Sun.

“Galileo can give her a bit of stamina, which never hurts, and of course

he is by a champion in Redoute’s. He will be commercial and he has all

you need to be a good stallion and the mating is good.”

Dubois said See You Soon had always displayed an unwillingness to

want to load into the barriers, but it had deteriorated this preparation.

“She has never been that friendly with the barriers but last preparation

she was OK,” he said.

“However, it got worse after the winter. She goes in fine at home ... but

she can be a nasty pony. They have a good memory.”

Bred to southern hemisphere time by Woodpark Stud’s Dr David

Chaikin, See You Soon is a half-sister to Qatar’s champion older male

for four consecutive years, the four-time Listed winner The Blue Eye

(Dubawi), as well as four other winners including the Dubois-trained

Julian Rock (Invincible Spirit).

Her dam, Soneva (Cherokee Run), a half-sister to US Listed winner

Coronado Rose (Coronado’s Quest), was a four-time stakes winner

including two Group 3 victories in France.

See You Soon has a yearling half-sister by Fastnet Rock (Danehill) and

Soneva is due to foal to Trapeze Artist (Snitzel) in early October.

Soneva is expected to be covered by Darley first season shuttler Too

Darn Hot (Dubawi) once she foals down this year while the yearling filly is

set to be offered at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in January.

“The Fastnet Rock filly looks really good. She’s a nice foal. She’s taller

than this one (See You Soon) and she will go to the Magic Millions in

January, but I don’t know yet who will consign her,” Dubois said.

See You Soon is by France’s leading sire Siyouni (Pivotal), who

currently leads this year’s table with 44 individual winners and four stakes

winners having finished runner-up by earnings to Coolmore’s goliath

Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) last year and second in 2018 as well behind

Nathaniel (Galileo).

Standing at the Aga Khan’s Haras de Bonneval in France, Siyouni

covered seven mares to southern hemisphere time in 2017 and eight in

2018.

Two yearling colts by the stallion sold at the Magic MIllions sale in

January for $400,000 and $220,000 respectively while a filly by the sire was

bought by Bon Ho’s Legend Racing for $400,000 at the Inglis Australian

Easter Yearling Sale.

Nature Strip ready for Concorde returnLikely Australian Horse of the Year Nature Strip

(Nicconi) will make his first raceday appearance

this season in the Concorde Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m)

at Randwick on Saturday in what will be a small

field. Only five rivals were nominated to take

him on yesterday, with Lightning Stakes (Gr 1,

1000m) winner Gytrash (Lope De Vega) and

Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (Gr 2, 1200m) conqueror

Splintex (Snitzel) joined by ten-year-old Ball

Of Muscle (Dubawi), honest mare Fiesta (I

Am Invincible) and improving sprinter Dirty

Work (Written Tycoon). With entries extended

until 11am Sydney time today, trainer Danny

Williams threw in the well-travelled Prairie Fire

(Snitzel) yesterday, but other entries are likely

to be few and far between. Nature Strip finished

fourth to Gytrash in the Lightning Stakes first-

up last preparation, but trainer Chris Waller

expects a different result this time around. "The

1000 (metres) up the straight is a little different

to 1000 (metres) around a bend," Waller said of

the front-runner. "We will have the brakes on

but I don't know if they will work.”

Finche treads similar path towards first Tuesday in NovemberLast year’s beaten Melbourne Cup (Gr 1,

3200m) favourite Finche (Frankel) will run for

the first time since when he contests Saturday’s

Chelmsford Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) with Kathy

O’Hara aboard. The Chris Waller-trained

Finche finished fifth behind Samadoubt (Not A

Single Doubt) in last year’s Chelmsford Stakes

before taking out the Kingston Town Stakes

(Gr 3, 2000m) second-up. He then progressed

to run second to stablemate Kings Will Dream

(Casamento) in the Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1,

2000m), fifth to Mer De Glace (Rulership) in

the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) and seventh

to Vow And Declare (Declaration Of War) in

the Melbourne Cup. "He has been in work for

a long time so he is naturally pretty fit," Waller

said. "I think he will run a cheeky race over a

mile but he will be harder to beat second up

over 2000 metres."

Sydney satellite stable up and running for PikeIt may have taken plenty of effort and sacrifice,

but Cambridge trainer Tony Pike finally has his

temporary Sydney satellite barn in operation.

Stable foreman Chris McNab and trackwork rider

Matthew Ward have undergone their mandatory

two-week quarantine period in Sydney after

receiving travel exemptions to head across the

Tasman earlier this month. The pair welcomed

The Bostonian (Jimmy Choux) to their temporary

home at Rosehill yesterday morning, with the

Group 1 winner having been based at Bjorn

Baker’s Warwick Farm stables. “They got out

of quarantine on Friday,” Pike said. “They were

rapt about that and enjoyed their weekend in

Sydney. We took over the boxes at Rosehill first

thing this morning. The Bostonian moved there

mid-morning from Bjorn’s and Catalyst and

River Run fly into Sydney tonight (Monday).” The

Bostonian finished seventh in the Winx Stakes

(Gr 1, 1400m) and will run in either the Tramway

Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) or Chelmsford Stakes (Gr 2,

1600m) at Randwick this weekend. “He has done

really well,” Pike said yesterday. “He is nominated

for the Tramway and the Chelmsford on the

weekend. Chris will get a bit of an idea once he

sees him today and tomorrow morning we will

confirm which race he will run in.”

Melbourne switch for Master Of WineThe lure of a ballot-exempt position in the Cox

Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) could entice Master Of

Wine (Maxios) to Moonee Valley this weekend

to tackle the Feehan Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m). Part-

owner Rupert Legh said Master Of Wine was

definitely bound for Melbourne to continue

his campaign after he disappointed when

12th behind Verry Elleegant (Zed) in the Winx

Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m). “He will definitely come

down here this week, so it’s either the Feehan

or the Makybe Diva at Flemington,’’ Legh told

Racing.com. “He’s here for either the Cox Plate

or Caulfield Cup and then hopefully into the

(Melbourne) Cup. (First-up) he was ridden

upside down for a stayer resuming. He was in

the red zone from the moment they jumped

and everything on the speed faded.’’

Prague trials wellat Rosehill Dual Group 3-winning colt Prague (Redoute’s

Choice), the centre of a significant purchase

for stallion duties by Kia Ora Stud last week,

tuned up for his spring return with an eye-

catching barrier trial win at Rosehill yesterday.

The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained

three-year-old, who was also Group 1-placed

at two, won heat nine over 896 metres by half

a length. Maher indicated Prague would either

resume in the Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m)

on Saturday week or the Danehill Stakes (Gr

2, 1200m) on the same day at Flemington.

“His fitness is very good. I just wanted to give

him a good sweat to bring him on, just a nice

trackwork gallop actually,” Maher told Sky

Racing. “James (McDonald) is very happy with

him and he can definitely feel him coming on

every time he’s sat on him.”

Berry happy with Ole KirkOle Kirk (Written Tycoon) finished third in the

barrier trial won by Prague, finishing two and

three-quarters of a length behind Prague. Already

Blessed (Better Than Ready), who set the pace,

finished second. Jockey Tommy Berry rode the

Hawkes Racing-trained Ole Kirk, who was runner-

up to Anders (Not A Single Doubt) in the Rosebud

(Listed, 1100m) on August 8, and he has already

been booked to ride him in the Run To The Rose.

“By the time he runs it will be a month between

runs, even a little bit longer and he’s a nice, strong

colt who carries a bit of condition, so the trial

ticked him over nicely,” Berry told Sky Racing.

“He didn’t have his blinkers on, so he was a bit

laidback but I was very happy with the way he has

come through his (first-up) run and heading into

his run on Saturday week.” Click here to view the

Rosehill barrier trial replays.

Winterbottom on radar for FitueseEmerging filly Fituese (Deep Field) may be bound

for Perth later this year if she steps up in the way

that her owners expect. The John Thompson-

trained Fituese won the Denise’s Joy Stakes

(Listed, 1100m) shifted from Scone to Rosehill in

May due to Covid-19, and managing owner and

syndicator Joe O’Neill hopes that she develops into

a Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) contender.

"She's showing herself to be a top-class filly," O'Neill

told Racing.com. "As a three-year-old she had five

wins from eight starts, and we think she's going to

really improve this preparation. She'll trial next

week in Sydney and then kick off on September 12

at Rosehill over 1100 metres. If she's going as well as

John thinks she is, she could head to Perth."

Makybe Diva first-up for AktauMornington Cup (Listed, 2400m) winner Aktau

(Teofilo) will head for the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1,

2400m) and the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)

via the Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), with

trainer Mike Moroney yesterday confirming the

British import would have his first run in the

first of the Flemington Group 1 features. "He

has improved both physically and mentally,"

Moroney told Racing.com. "He had a solid gallop

today and finished off strongly. It's his second

jumpout of the preparation and we certainly

noticed improvement. He'll run first-up in the

Makybe Diva Stakes with our aim being the

Caulfield and Melbourne Cup."

Mystic Journey to head homeTasmanian trainer Adam Trinder will bring

stable star Mystic Journey (Needs Further)

back home after disappointing in Saturday’s

Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m). It was the second

unplaced run in Victoria this campaign, having

finished eighth in the P B Lawrence Stakes (Gr

2, 1400m) two weeks earlier. Trinder informed

stewards that he would reassess Mystic

Journey’s spring campaign upon her return.

Arcadia Queen still battling abscessBob Peters remains hopeful the spring campaign

of Arcadia Queen (Pierro), who was scratched

from Saturday’s Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m)

at Caulfield, can get back on track. The leading

Western Australian owner-breeder said the

Grant and Alana Williams-trained five-year-old,

who ran fifth in the P B Lawrence Stakes (Gr

2, 1400m) on August 15, was still overcoming

problems caused by a foot abscess. “We are just

trying to clean it up now and working on that at

the moment,’’ Peters told Racing.com. “I hope to

get her back for the Makybe Diva at Flemington

but she’s missed a run and now she’s missed a

bit of work. It’s hardly ideal. But you have to deal

with it and we’re still hopeful she can get to the

Flemington race and we’ll see from there.’’

‘Regal Power needs more racing’Regal Power (Pierro), another Bob Peters-owned

charge who won the $5 million All-Star Mile

(1600m) at Caulfield in March, finished second-

last in the Memsie Stakes but connections will

press on with his spring campaign. “Regal Power

is his own worst enemy at the moment. I’ve

watched the (Memsie) replay a few times and

when they put the brakes on, he starts to tug a bit

and then he gets his head in the air and that seems

to be it for him there,” Peters said. “He just needs

more work and racing I suppose will do the trick.”

Lupton heartened by Etah James reportsSemi-retired horseman Mark Lupton is

encouraged by reports on his top-class staying

mare Etah James (Raise The Flag) as the eight-

year-old gets ready for a spring campaign.

Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Etah James

has remained in the care of Ciaron Maher and

David Eustace at their Warwick Farm base in

Sydney, having traversed the Tasman on multiple

occasions in the summer. Lupton, who bred and

races the mare, trained Etah James to finish third

in the Avondale Cup (Gr 2, 2400m) and fourth in

the Auckland Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), before she was

on the last flight out of Auckland to Sydney prior to

the Covid-19 shutdown. “I’ve left her with Ciaron

and she’s going to trial this week at Warwick Farm

over 1200 metres. He’s really pleased with her, he’s

absolutely raving about her,” Lupton said. “If you

want to go to the Melbourne Cup, it’s ideal to have

a dual-state stable which Ciaron and Dave do.”

Savabeel filly breaks maidenThe Tom Dabernig and Ben Hayes-trained Hindaam

(Savabeel) made light work of her opposition to

break through for her maiden win over 1200 metres

at Pakenham yesterday. It was just the second start

for the three-year-old, who finished runner-up

over 1100 metres at Bendigo on debut. Sporting

the colours of Shadwell Stud, the filly jumped well

from her wide barrier and was sent forward early by

jockey Daniel Stackhouse to settle in the one-one.

Stackhouse asked his charge to improve three-wide

turning for home and took the lead with a furlong

to go and Hindaam quickly distanced her rivals

to win by five lengths. Hindaam, whose dam is a

sister to dual Group 1 winner Merchant Navy, was

bred by Cambridge’s Windsor Park Stud. “She’s

a really exciting filly going forward,” Hayes said.

“We’re looking forward to throwing her in the deep

end now.” She is as short as $34 for the Thousand

Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).

Dates set for Melham betting caseBen Melham’s hearing before the Victorian

Racing Tribunal will take place from September

21 to 23, but another preliminary hearing will

be required to deal with the fifth of seven

charges issued against the rider in April. That

charge deals with five bets placed on Singapore

thoroughbred racing, with Melham not riding

in Singapore at the time.

Stower injuredJockey Brooke Stower was diagnosed with

a fractured vertebra after she was dislodged

from one of her mounts, debutant Ambridge

Stower was taken to Grafton Hospital where she

was assessed, although she was also cleared of

neurological problems.

Gytrash crowned SA Horse of the YearLightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) hero Gytrash was

Year on Sunday night, with the Gordon Richards

trainee beating out Robert Sangster Stakes (Gr 1,

1200m) victress Bella Vella (Commands) and the

consistent Dalasan (Dalakhani). “It really caps an

amazing 2020 for the horse which all started with

his win in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning

at Flemington back in February,” Richards told

Racing.com. “We’re really proud of him winning

this award and we know we beat two legitimate

stars in Bella Vella and Dalasan to claim the title.”

Todd Pannell was named South Australian Jockey

Marsh strikes with South Island barnStephen Marsh is hoping a treble at Riccarton

on Saturday can be the springboard to boost

numbers in his South Island barn. Although

Marsh’s main training establishment is at

Cambridge on the North Island, he is focused

on making his satellite stable at Riccarton a

permanent part of his operation. “I’ve got a

12-horse barn down there and got seven horses

in it at the moment,” Marsh said. “It was full

around New Zealand Cup time last year, but

a few have been retired since. I’m rapt in how

the stable down there has been going. Rhys

Mildon, my foreman, goes down regularly, but

I’ve got a staff of three good girls running it and

they do a fantastic job. Sam Wynne is the head

lass. I think we’ve won 16 races with our horses

in that stable. Last Saturday was the first time I

have won three in a day down there.” Marsh was

successful with Jojo Roxx (Medaglia d’Oro) and

Glorious Ocean (Ocean Park), both ridden by

Wynne, as well as Bronte Beach (Reliable Man).

INTERNATIONAL

61 for KodiacBahrain Pride (2 c ex Life Of Pi by Sea The Stars)

caught the eye in winning the Ripon Champion

2YO Trophy Stakes (Listed, 6f) yesterday for

trainer Simon Crisford. A winner on debut at

Windsor, the son of Kodiac (Danehill) remained

unbeaten after defeating International Dream

(Acclamation) by one and three-quarter lengths,

with Terrichang (Dandy Man) in third. Bahrain

Pride holds an entry for the Middle Park Stakes

(Gr 1, 6f) at Newmarket on September 26. Sold

by Salcey Forest as a foal for 125,000 guineas,

he was then purchased as a two-year-old at the

Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale by Stroud

Coleman Bloodstock for 300,000 guineas. Bahrain

Pride is the first foal out of unraced mare Life Of

Pi, who is a half-sister to stakes-winning two-year-

old Temps Au Temps (Invincible Spirit). Kodiac

stood for €65,000 at Tally-Ho Stud.

Four for Scissor KickNot So Silly (2 c ex Nehalennia by Giant’s

Causeway) got off the mark at Salon de-Provence

in an 1800-metre maiden yesterday to become the

fourth individual winner for former Arrowfield

Stud shuttler Scissor Kick (Redoute’s Choice).

Fifth on debut earlier this month over a mile at

Vichy, the Frederic Rossi-trained colt came on for

the experience and distance, cruising clear by six

lengths to beat Trust On Him (Elvstroem), with My

Nest (New Approach) a further length and a half

back in third. Not So Silly is the second European

winner for Scissor Kick, who is responsible for

winners Dzsenifer and Girls Kick On in Australia.

The former shuttler stood the 2020 season at

Haras d’Etreham in France for a fee of €5,000.

Cox Plate aim for AspetarThe centenary Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) will

have international representation with the

Roger Charlton-trained Aspetar (Al Kazeem)

to make the trip to Melbourne. Charlton, who

has had two Australian runners before - Quest

For More (Teofilo) and Withhold (Champs

Elysees) - will have his first starter in the Cox

Plate with Aspetar, who won the York Stakes

(Gr 2, 1m 2.5f) impressively at his most recent

outing. “If we can get him there, we’re going to

run in the Cox Plate,” Charlton told Sky Sports

Racing. “He has to do quarantine himself for

two weeks, then they (Charlton’s staff) have to

go via Sydney for two weeks before the horse

arrives. Currently there are no flights to Sydney,

so there are a lot of hurdles to jump. He would

get there at the beginning of October and the

race is the middle of October. If you ran him

in a Champion Stakes here he might be fourth

or fifth, he’s an honourable little horse, but it’s

a sharp track out there and I think it will suit.

I think he will be probably the only European

horse, I mean Aidan O'Brien may have some

runners there but I don't think there's anything

else from the United Kingdom going."

so to speak so we are very happy there,” Australian

Bloodstock’s Jamie Lovett told Racing.com

yesterday. “The (original) owners are staying in for

a leg. We’ve been knocking on the door for a while

for this horse and we thought we weren’t going to be

able to get him but Andreas was quite keen to get us

involved and it has just worked out really well.”

Collide, Almania also on travelling short-listHandicapper Collide (Frankel), who finished sixth

in the Prix Kergorlay (Gr 2, 3000m), and progressive

four-year-old Almania (Australia) are also in line for

a trip to Australia, with Almania to line up against

Enable (Nathaniel) in the September Stakes (Gr 3,

1m 4f) at Kempton on Saturday to earn his berth.

“I think we’ve got three very good horses there,”

Jamie Lovett told Racing.com. “You could draw

a form line through them to say that all three, on

the day, would measure up in a Melbourne Cup.

We’ve got a really good team and, touch wood, they

all stay sound. It’s a long way to go. You don’t win

a Melbourne Cup before it’s even September but

things are coming along well.”

Vale TorcedorOne horse who will not sport the Australian

Bloodstock colours this spring is former top

European stayer Torcedor (Fastnet Rock), who is

listed as deceased with Racing Australia. According

to the Australian Stud Book, Torcedor died on March

25, with racecaller Adam Olszanski saying last night

that he died in a trackwork accident. Torcedor, who

originally raced in the Te Akau Racing colours for

prominent New Zealanders like Sir Peter Vela, Sir

Patrick Hogan and Laurie Laxon, was brought to

Australia by Australian Bloodstock last year, joining

the Paul Preusker yard, but did not race. He was

twice Group 1-placed behind champion stayer

Stradivarius (Sea The Stars).

Deirdre still aiming to claim first Arc for JapanStar Japanese mare Deirdre (Harbinger)

remains on course for a tilt at the Prix de l’Arc

de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) despite losing

her Nassau Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f) crown at

Goodwood last month. The talented six-year-

old, who has been training in Newmarket

throughout this season, made a satisfactory

comeback when fifth behind Ghaiyyath

(Dubawi) and Enable (Nathaniel) in the Coral-

Eclipse (Gr 1, 1m 2f), but failed to fire when last

of seven in the Nassau Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f) at

Goodwood. The team behind the Toji Morita-

owned globetrotter are still eyeing a trip to Paris

on October 4 and believe a physical issue led

to her recent disappointing effort. Assistant

trainer Yuta Komiyama, who is with the popular

performer in Newmarket, said: “She has always

been fully committed to her races but wasn’t

herself in the Nassau Stakes, which had never

happened before. She had a back sore which

maybe stopped her running at full power. She

had a good rest after Goodwood and looks

happy and relaxed now. She’s ready to prepare

for her next run.”

half-head to Sircconi with Game Keeper a long

neck away in third. Congrats stood four seasons

US$10,000 at WinStar Farm in Kentucky this year.

Saturday. Registering his fifth win in eight starts,

the Tom Dascombe-trained gelding became

the 38th individual stakes winner for Dutch

of the US Listed winning mare Kenzadargent

(Kendargent). Dutch Art stood at Cheveley Park

winner for her sire Lawman (Invincible Spirit).

Stepping forward from her debut performance

when fourth at Cologne two weeks ago, Salonlove

and she showed a good turn of foot to quickly draw

a couple of lengths clear of the fast finishing Milka

(Protectionist), while Demonstration (Areion)

stayed on for third. Former Ballylinch Stud resident

Lawman, sire of Group 1 winners Just The Judge,

Harbour Law, Most Improved and Marcel, relocated
