Gold Coast trainer Toby Edmonds is pleased with the condition of rapid three-year-old filly Houtzen (I Am Invincible) as she gears

up towards a tilt at The Everest (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday.

The daughter of I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), whose sole defeat in five starts as a two-year-old came in the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in March, will face 11 rivals, seven of them Group One winners, in the world’s richest turf race this weekend.

Stakes) (Gr 3, 1200m) by a length at the same track three weeks later.

Edmonds is confident that the filly, who is representing slot holder Aquis Farm, has found further improvement from that second-up assignment and is hopeful of a good performance in Saturday’s race.

“She’s in really good order, she looks great and I’m confident she has taken a lot of improvement out of the run,” Edmonds told ANZ Bloodstock News.

Immediately after Houtzen’s victory in the Scarborough Stakes, Edmonds was reluctant to confirm the filly would take her chance in The Everest, but having consulted jockey Jeff Lloyd and analysed the sectional times he was happy to give her the go ahead.

“I did a post-race interview straight after the race and I hadn’t been able to talk to Jeff Lloyd at all, and after having a catch up with him and watching the replays and getting my head around the times she ran and all the rest of it, we were quite upbeat about it all,” Edmonds said.

“Jeff was very upbeat in this post-race interview and I would have liked to have talked to him first and I think I would have been a lot more upbeat also.

“He gave a very good report and I have to be guided by that, he knows her very well, probably better than anyone and she’s trained on and come through it nicely. We are very confident about her chances on Saturday.”

Edmonds added that, though he had been sceptical about The

Everest when the race was first established, he was looking forward to having a contender in the inaugural running of the $10,000,000 sprint.

“I am looking forward to it now. I was a bit sceptical at the start, but it has grown on us quickly and it’s great to be apart of the inaugural running of the race,” Edmonds said.

“If we can perform well this year and build to towards and get our heads around the actual concept we can support it more and find the right horse.”

Among Houtzen’s opposition in The Everest are three Lindsay Park-trained sprinters, with Vega Magic (Lope De Vega), Redkirk Warrior (Notnowcato) and Tulip (Pierro) representing slot holders Max Whitby, Star Entertainment Group and Coolmore respectively.

Former Western Australia-trained gelding Vega Magic is unbeaten in three starts for the training partnership of David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig, including victories in The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) and Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m).

Meanwhile, the lightly-raced Redkirk Warrior, who ran out an impressive winner of the Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) last season, resumed with a comfortable success in the Bobbie Lewis Quality (Gr 2, 1200m) on 16 September.

Both horses were ridden in work by Regan Bayliss at Randwick yesterday morning, and Ben Hayes said the rider could not split them following the racecourse gallop.

"(Vega Magic) worked excellent, I was really

happy with how relaxed he was during his first look at the track," Hayes said.

"Last (preparation) didn't suit Redkirk Warrior but his work has been good and he's very good fresh.

"(Regan) couldn't tell me. He said they were both really good. They went through the gears nicely and hit the line strong."

Hayes added that the Group Three-winning and Group One-placed

filly Tulip should not be underestimated in receipt of upwards of 5.5 kilograms from her elders.

"We've got a Group One sprinter at home and she won the gallop (to represent Coolmore)," Hayes said.

"She was beaten five lengths by She Will Reign in the Golden Slipper but she was pushed out the whole way down the straight."

Elsewhere, Group One-winning mare English (Encosta De Lago) was also given a racecourse gallop at Canterbury yesterday morning as she builds up towards the lucrative race.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained five-year-old is representing slot holder TAB, and she ran an eye-catching second behind In Her Time (Time Thief) in the Premiere Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) over The Everest course and distance ten days ago.

"It was good to see her come out and perform well to settle a few people's nerves going into the race," Bott said.

"It was there for everyone to see that she's come up well this season. She showed she's still got that brilliant turn of foot.

"It was a good strong hit-out for her (at Canterbury). That should bring her on nicely. She shouldn't have to do too much more.

"There's more improvement to come from that second-up run. Her weight's spot on. She's a very happy mare."

All Too Hard colt fastest breeze-upThe final breeze-up session for today’s Magic Millions Gold Coast 2YOs in Training sale took place at the Gold Coast yesterday. The fastest breeze of the day was clocked by Lot 125, a filly from the Baramul Stud draft by Vinery Stud’s second season sire All Too Hard (Casino Prince). The filly, who is out a of a half-sister to the South African dual Grade One winner Delago Deluxe (Encosta De Lago), covered the 200 metres in a time of 10.46. The sale gets underway at 12pm. Salsamor likely to run in the Guineas Co-trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young have said they intend to run Salsamor (Tavistock) in Saturday’s Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). The three-year-old colt was most recently seen running an eye-catching second to Showtime (Snitzel) in the Bill Stutt Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Moonee Valley on 29 September. "He's running in the Caulfield Guineas on Saturday - he deserves his chance," Busuttin told Racing.com. "He was again a bit stiff in his last run [behind Showtime in the Stutt Stakes], and I think it's a wide open Guineas this year.”

Two runners in the Guineas for PerryThe Paul Perry-trained The Mission (Choisir) will gallop at Caulfield today ahead of his tilt in the Caulfield Guineas. A winner of the ATC Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) as a juvenile, The Mission raced anti-clockwise for the first time when sixth in the Bill Stutt Stakes at Moonee Valley last Friday week and will head to Caulfield on Tuesday morning for a course gallop with his Guineas rider Beau Mertens aboard. "He's had a race at Moonee Valley and I think he's got the hang of it now,"

Perry said. "He works at Flemington all the time so I don't think it would be a worry, but it would be nice for him to have a gallop there all the same." The Mission will line up alongside his stablemate Perast (Snitzel) on Saturday, who will be looking to follow up his victory in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude (Gr 3, 1400m).

Levendi handed Derby alternativeIf Levendi (Pierro) misses out on a start in the Caulfield Guineas on Saturday, trainer Peter Gelagotis has said he intends to the aim the colt at the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) at Flemington on 4 November instead. The colt ran sixth in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude on his last start and Manny Gelagotis is confident he would suit a step up in distance. "I think he's a (Victoria) Derby horse," Manny Gelagotis told Racing.com. "If he doesn't get a start this weekend we'll probably head to Adelaide for the Hill Smith Stakes over 1800 metres. There's also a Benchmark 70 at Caulfield on Blue Sapphire Day so the options are there."

Thousand Guineas for Leather’n’lace Trainer Darren Weir has decided to run Leather’n’lace (Street Cry) in the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Caulfield on Saturday. The three-year-old filly ran third in the Edward Manifold Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) on Saturday and Weir is confident she can improve on Saturday. "She's come through that well and will back-up," said Weir. The lightly raced filly, who has won three of her five starts, is owned by breeder David Moodie’s Hesket Bloodstock.

Toorak Handicap attracts 29 nominationsA total of 29 horses, including European contenders Kaspersky (Footstepsinthesand), Riven Light (Raven’s Pass), Mask Of Time (Holy Roman Emperor) and Folkswood (Exceed And

Excel) have been nominated for the Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington on Saturday. Meanwhile, trainer Chris Waller has nominated dual Group One winner Egg Tart (Sebring), who could be joined in the race by Group Three winner Comin’ Through (Fastnet Rock). Another notable nomination includes the Anthony Freedman-trained Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) runner-up Mr Sneaky (High Chaparral).

No Toorak for Fastnet TempestOTI Racing’s Terry Henderson said he has decided to bypass the Toorak Handicap on Saturday with Fastnet Tempest (Fastnet Rock), believing the weights will not suit the gelding. "It looks as though the weights will be compressed and I don't think that will suit him," Henderson told Racing.com. "We're really happy with him and I liked the way he worked this morning." OTI will not be without representation in the race, with the Chris Waller-trained Tom Melbourne (Dylan Thomas) likely to take his chance.

Hartnell given Caulfield Stakes optionDual Group One winner Hartnell (Authorized) featured among the 20 horses nominated for Saturday’s Caulfield Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m). James Cummings opted to shelve plans to run the gelding in the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) after he was beaten by Humidor (Teofilo) in the Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and by Bonneval (Makfi) in the Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) last time out. Hartnell could again clash with the Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained Bonneval, while her Group One-winning stablemate Jon Snow (Iffraaj) also holds a nomination. Irish champion trainer Aidan O’Brien has nominated Group One winner Johannes Vermeer (Galileo) and stablemate Taj Mahal (Galileo) for the $1,000,000 race.

Dual nomination for Lizzie L’Amour The Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained Group One winner Lizzie L’Amour (Zabeel) also featured among the nominations for the Caulfield Stakes on Saturday, and Forsman has also revealed she will likely be nominated for the Cranbourne Cup (Listed, 2025m) on Sunday as connections try and boost her chances of a start in the Caulfield Cup. Lizzie L'Amour weakened out of the Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) first up and was found to have suffered atrial fibrillation before a luckless sixth in the Stocks Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m). “She hasn't had a fair chance to prove herself so hopefully she gets a crack at it on the weekend,” Forsman said. “We'd like to get her there (Caulfield Cup), so it's just whether she can get in."

Appleby enters three in Herbert Power

Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby has nominated both Qewy (Street Cry) and Francis Of Assisi (Danehill Dancer) for Saturday’s Herbert Power Stakes (Gr 2, 2400m) at Caulfield. Both horses enjoyed a fruitful spring campaign last season, with Qewy winning the Geelong Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) and Sandown Cup (Listed, 3200m), while his stablemate won the Bendigo Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 3, 2600m). They could be joined in the race by stablemate Kidmenever (Baltic King), after he also featured among the nominations for the $400,000 race. Trainer Robert Hickmott is responsible for seven nominations, including Foundry (Galileo), who was last seen winning The Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m).

Sheidel among 17 nominated for SchillaciGroup One winner Sheidel (Holy Roman Emperor) heads the 17 nominations for Saturday’s Schillaci Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at

Caulfield. Last season’s Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) winner could line up alongside multiple Group One winner Lankan Rupee (Redoute’s Choice) and Group Three winner Missrock (Fastnet Rock), who also featured among the nominations. Meanwhile, Desert Lashes (Reward For Effort), who surrendered her unbeaten record last time out, has been nominated by trainer Shayne Cahill.

21 juveniles nominated for DebutantA total of 21 juveniles have been nominated for Saturday’s Inglis Debutant Stakes (Listed, 1000m). Godolphin trainer James Cummings is responsible for three of the entries, including Sanglier (Albrecht), who ran six in the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (Listed, 1000m) three days ago and is the only horse nominated with previous race experience. Cummings has also nominated Encryption (Lonhro) and Cossetot (Epaulette) for the $120,000 race. Meanwhile, Lindsay Park have entered five horses, including Qafila (Not A Single Doubt), who won her 800 metre trial at Wodonga on 12 September, beating Nomothaj (Snitzel) in the process, who subsequently went on to win the Maribyrnong Trial. Click here to view Saturday’s Caulfield nominations.

Happy Clapper to Cox PlateTrainer Pat Webster has said that Happy Clapper (Teofilo) will run in the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) at Moonee Valley on 28 October, where he will clashing with dual winner Winx (Street Cry). Happy Clapper was last seen securing his first Group One victory when he won the Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick, and he could drop in class for the Craven Plate (Gr 3, 2000m) at Randwick this weekend. "He does exactly the same thing between runs," Webster said. He has an easy first week and then steps it up the second week. So he will have a serious gallop on Tuesday morning. He can't get any fitter so it's just a case of maintaining that. We will paying up tomorrow for the Cox Plate and the intention is to definitely run if all goes well."

Change of plan for Takedown Having not gained a start in The Everest (1200m) on Saturday, trainer Gary Moore has said he now plans

to set Group One winner Takedown (Stratum) on the path for a defence of this Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) crown in Perth. The five-year-old gelding ran fourth in the Premiere Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and looks set to have his next start in the Sydney Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Randwick on Saturday. "It's still a lot of prize money and he's going to peak third-up," Moore said. "Physically he's got more muscle mass. He looks fit and he's ready to go.” All being well, Moore added Takedown could head to the Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Moonee Valley on 27 October.

Too Good To Refuse to resume at DoombenThe Desleigh Forster-trained Too Good To Refuse (Rothesay) will be on trial for a trip to Melbourne when he resumes in an Open Handicap (1200m) at Doomben on Saturday. The five-year-old has not been sighted since running 11th in the Glasshouse Handicap (Listed, 1400m). "I have always wanted to try him down the straight six (furlongs) at Flemington. It would suit him with plenty of pace and being able to wind up for a final shot at them," Forster said. "There aren't many horses in Australia who have the same finishing burst as Too Good To Refuse. I don't know about a Group One down the straight six but there are few other races to suit him." Click here to view Saturday’s Doomben nominations.

No weight penalty for Amelie’s StarAmelie’s Star (Testa Rossa) has not been given a weight penalty in Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) for her victory in The Bart Cummings (Gr 3, 2500m) at Flemington on Saturday. The Darren Weir-trained mare earned a ballot exemption into the Melbourne Cup on 7 November with her two-length victory in Saturday's 2500 metre race and remains on 51 kilograms for both Cups. "Amelie's Star's Melbourne Cup weight will be 51 kilograms, the same weight Almandin was given after he won the Bart Cummings in 2016 before going on to win the Melbourne Cup," Racing Victoria's chief handicapper Greg Carpenter said. "Amelie's Star will meet Almandin on the same weight terms in the Melbourne Cup as she did on Saturday (5.5 kilograms less) and is 1.5 kilograms worse off against Harlem."

Melham and Allen free to ride on Guineas dayBen Melham is free to ride on Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) day on Saturday after having the severity of a careless riding suspension reduced on appeal. Fellow jockey John Allen has also had a win on appeal against the severity of a careless riding ban and can ride on Saturday. Melham was banned for nine meetings at Ballarat last Thursday but the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board shaved two meetings off that penalty at Monday's hearing in Melbourne. Allen was suspended for eight meetings at the same Ballarat meeting. He was successful on Monday in having his suspension reduced by one and is also free return this Saturday.

Armidale cancelledRacing at Armidale on the NSW Tablelands has been called of because of surface water on the track after heavy rain overnight. Monday's postponement comes a day after the last four races at Coonamble in the Central West of the state had to be abandoned because of continuous rain during the afternoon. After weeks of dry weather, rain is also expected in the lead-up to Saturday's Randwick meeting featuring The Everest.

New Zealand

Livamol Classic to run a week on SundayThe abandoned Livamol Classic (Gr 1, 2040m) has been rearranged by Hawke’s Bay Racing and New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing and will be staged on Sunday week. Saturday’s meeting was abandoned before the NZ$250,000 race was run with heavy rain making the track unsafe. “We believe that this has been the best possible outcome, following the disappointment we all felt on Saturday afternoon,” Hawke’s Bay Racing chief executive Butch Castles said.

Cox Plate off the table for GingernutsSpring plans for Gingernuts (Iffraaj) have been thrown into disarray following the abandonment of the Livamol Classic, with the four-year-old unlikely to contest either the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) or Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m). "We can control a lot of things, but not the weather

and when we left Hastings this morning it was bucketing down," Te Akau Racing’s David Ellis said. "We need to now decide whether the Livamol is the best way forward for Gingernuts to the Emirates Stakes on the last day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. I will need to discuss it with the owners and then we will make our decision."

Volkstok'n'barrell spring plans up in the airFuture plans for Volkstok'n'barrell (Tavistock) are also up in the air following the abandonment of the Livamol Classic. "I was going to send him to Sydney to race next weekend, but the flight is going through Christchurch which makes it even longer," said Donna Logan, who trains the gelding with Chris Gibbs. "That wouldn't be ideal for him after going down to Hastings and back. We're going to wait and see if the Livamol is going to be run in a fortnight's time and, if it is, we'll go there. It's very frustrating, but everyone is in the same boat and there's nothing that can be done about it."

Hughes’ strong hand for Cup carnivalHusband and wife training team Kevin and Pam Hughes are set to have a strong team for the upcoming New Zealand Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) carnival. Among their leading contenders is Maybe Miami (Iffraaj), with the gelding set to tackle the Coupland’s Bakeries Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) on 15 November. “At this stage, it’s all falling into place,” Kevin Hughes said. “(Maybe Miami) is right on target and I think he’s going to be a threat. I’m toying with the idea of a 1600 metre race at Ashburton, it can be a soft mile there, and then into the Coupland’s.”

NZ Thousand Guineas aim for Swing NoteTe Akau Racing-owned filly Swing Note (Encosta De Lago) entered the reckoning for the New Zealand One Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) next month with a comfortable victory over 1400 metres at Riccarton on Saturday. “We were very pleased with that,” said co-trainer Jamie Richards. “Steve (Autridge) and I had planned to probably ride her a bit colder than that, but she jumped and put herself in the race. Where we go to from here we’re not sure,

but probably a mile around Riccarton should suit her nicely and she may go to the Zacinto Stakes there at the end of the month.”

High hopes for OhceedeeTrainer Steven Cole was pleased with Ohceedee’s (Power) sixth in the Hawke’s Bay Guineas (Gr 2, 1400m) on Saturday and is considering a tilt at the Sarten Memorial Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) next up on 23 October with the seven-race maiden. “It was huge and against the pattern of the day,” Cole said. “From where he got to in the race he wasn’t a winning chance, but the way he got home was really encouraging. He travelled home well and he’s as bright as a button. We just have to decide whether we find a maiden mile for him next or run in the Sarten Memorial at Te Rapa before we head to Christchurch.”

International

28 for Dutch ArtThe Michael Dods-trained Mabs Cross (3 f ex Miss Meggy by Pivotal) won the Arran Stakes (Listed, 5f) at Musselburgh yesterday to provide her sire Dutch Art (Medicean) with his 28th stakes winner. The progressive filly, who has now won each of her last four starts, was ridden confidently in rear Paul Mulrennan and swooped late to beat Clem Fandango (Elzaam) by three quarters of a length, with Glenrowan Rose (Bushranger) a further half a length behind in third place. Dutch Art’s progeny are headed by Group One winners Slade Power and Garswood.

19 for EpauletteThe Roger Varian-trained Augenblick (2 f ex Freezing Love by Danzig) made a winning debut when she won over seven furlongs at Kempton yesterday and in the process provided Darley’s first season reverse shuttler Epaulette (Commands) with his 19th winner. The two-year-old filly held on well for pressure to score a head victory over Ortiz (Havana Gold) with another two lengths back to Lady Al Thumama (Leroidesanimaux) in third. Augenblick is catalogued as Lot 1344 for the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale, which begins it’s five-day run on 30 October. Epaulette stands at Darley Kelvinside for $22,000 (inc GST).

Enable to stay in training next seasonThe John Gosden-trained multiple Group One-winning filly Enable (Nathaniel) will remain in training as a four-year-old, Prince Khalid Abdullah’s racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe has confirmed. The Juddmonte Farms-bred and raced filly completed a memorable three-year-old season when landing the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) on 1 October, and she is likely to be trained towards a defence of that race. “Prince Khalid loves to see his horses race, especially the good ones,” Grimthorpe said in a statement. "Her racing programme will be decided in the new year, but the defence of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe will be high in consideration."

US Army Ranger moved to Joseph O’BrienLast season’s Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) runner-up US Army Ranger (Galileo) will run at the Spring Carnival for Joseph O’Brien after being transferred from his father Aidan’s stable. US Army Ranger, who is currently in quarantine in Ireland, will be aimed at the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) and could be joined in the race by his Group Two-winning stablemate Rekindling (High Chaparral). "I'm training US Army Ranger now and we're hoping the switch of stables might freshen him up," Joseph O’Brien told the Racing Post. "He heads to Australia with Rekindling and both of them seem to be in very good form. At the moment hurdling is not something we are thinking about for US Army Ranger."

Godolphin purchase top lot at Book Two openerAt the time of going to press, a filly by Lope De Vega (Shamardal) was topping the opening session of Book Two of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale yesterday after Godolphin went to 370,000 guineas to secure filly from the draft of Baroda

With Thursday’s departure day edging ever closer the inmates in Newmarket quarantine where taking

things very easy on Side Hill today. The Willie Mullins-trained Max Dynamite

(Great Journey) and Thomas Hobson (Halling), who will join stablemates Riven Light (Raven’s Pass) and Wicklow Brave (Beat Hollow) in Melbourne, were joined on Side Hill by the Iain Jardine-trained Ebor Handicap (1m6f) winner Nakeeta.

The trio, who all hold a nomination for the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) at Flemington on 7 November, looked in good condition in the drizzle as they slowly cantered round on the artificial surface.

“They took some more nasal swabs this morning and those results should come back tomorrow,” International Racehorse Transport’s managing director Jim Paltridge told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday afternoon.

“All the connections will be keen to see the second acceptances for the Melbourne Cup tomorrow (today).

“But they were all fine over the weekend. The weather is holding better for us which is nice, there have been a few showers here and there, but mostly dry and mild which sets them for the shipment well. It also makes it so the transition between here and Melbourne is just that bit easier.

“They are pretty much ready to go,” he continued.

Folkswood (GB)4 g Exceed and Excel - Magic Nymph by Galileo

Expert viewThe Racing Post’s top tipster Paul Kealy

gives his view on Folkswood’s chances in Australia

No more than a useful handicapper as a three-year-old in Britain, finishing midfield in the Britannia at Royal Ascot and then earning places in fair company back at Ascot and Yarmouth, although beaten at a short price at the latter track. Still, improved fairly rapidly after that when sent to Dubai, winning a handicap off a mark of 104 on his second start at Meydan and then running a next second to Decorated Knight in the Jebel Hatta. The winner has done that form no harm at all by winning two Group Ones in the Ireland this year, but Folkswood's best effort back in Britain was when beaten half a length by Steel Of Madrid in the Earl Of Sefton at Newmarket. Not so good in the Huxley (third) next time and definitely below par when only fifth of seventh to Sovereign Debt in the Diomed Stakes at Epsom on Derby day, although not all horses handle that track. Bit to prove after that but too early to write off.

Folkswood (GB)2013 Bay Gelding

OverviewThe Charlie Appleby-trained Group One-

placed Folkswood has travelled to Melbourne with a plethora of options during the Spring Carnival. This weekend alone he features among the nominations for the Caulfield Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m), while he is expected to feature among the nominations for Sunday’s Cranbourne Cup (Listed, 2025m). He also holds a nomination for the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) at Moonee Valley on 28 October.

When speaking to the Racing Post on Sunday, Appleby said he was keeping his options open for this weekend but was leaning towards the running the gelding in the $300,000 Cranbourne Cup.

"We will pay up for Folkswood in the Caulfield Stakes to keep our options open."

The son of Darley shuttler Exceed And Excel (Danehill) was purchased for 160,000 guineas by John Ferguson at Book Two of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and has won three of his 12 career starts, amassing £189,855 in career prize money.

After being beaten into third on his debut at Newmarket, Folkswood lost his maiden tag on his second start as a two-year-old, winning over seven furlongs at Goodwood in August.

He was not seen again as juvenile and made winning reappearance as a three-year-old over a mile at Newmarket, before posting some consistent runs at Ascot and Yarmouth, finishing third and second respectively.

In January this year the gelding was sent to Dubai, running a first up second in the District One Mansions Handicap (2000m) before taking out the Meydan Jaguar F-Type Handicap (1800m) on his next start.

Folkswood was narrowly denied at the highest level on his next start, when defeated by the now multiple Group One winner Decorated Knight (Galileo) in the Jebel Hatta Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m).

Following his return to Britain the gelding ran second in the Earl Of Sefton Stakes (Gr 3, 1m1f), beaten by Steel Of Madrid (Lope De Vega), who is now in training with Tony McEvoy and named Calderon. He could also line up in the Cranbourne Cup (Listed, 2000m) on Sunday.

After running third in the Huxley Stakes (Gr 3, 1m2f) at Chester, the gelding was last seen running fifth in the Diomed Stakes (Gr 3, 1m½f) at Epsom in June.

Folkswood is out of a sister to Listed winner Galactic Star (Galileo), who are both out of Group One-winning mare Balisada (Kris).

A Keen Array For Pilkington And Co.

It certainly was a thrilling day of racing at Flemington on Saturday. Quite apart from Winx’s demolition job in the fifth - the Turnbull Stakes - the previous four races had seen first and second separated by less than a length.

Even closer still in the Group Two Gilgai Stakes down the Flemington ‘straight six’ with front runner, Keen Array, hanging on like granny’s tooth to win by the barest of margins.

Keen Array’s part-owner, Mark Pilkington, could have done without the near heart attack, but a few stiff drinks later, was mightily happy with the result.

“He (Keen Array) has been a terrific horse for us,” Pilkington points out. “The Gilgai was his first Group win, but he’s won three other stakes races - the Blue Sapphire, the Italktravel and last year’s Testa Rossa - and has seven wins overall for $837,950.

“He went close to winning the 2015 (Group One) Coolmore Stud Stakes when he was second to Japonisme after running down the worst part of the track and he’s had some ordinary luck in other races too. He finished off his last campaign with a good run in the (Group One) Winterbottom in Perth and the form out of that race - Sheidel, Malaguerra and company - has held up pretty well, while his two runs at Moonee Valley in August and September were pretty promising.

“Both (trainer) David Hayes and I thought his run in the Testa Rossa two weeks ago was fairly disappointing and we toyed with the idea of running him in a 1400m race as we reckon he’ll get further, but ended up keeping him in the

Gilgai and, fortunately, he got the chocolates.”A 5YO gelding by Bel Esprit, Keen Array was

bred by Oliver Wong and originally passed in for $25,000 at the 2014 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale. Wong - who also raced 2015 Group One ATC Oaks winner Gust of Wind - decided to race Keen Array, but sadly passed away after the horse had only raced twice.

“I’d seen Keen Array at Lindsay Park a few times and was really quite impressed with him,” Pilkington adds. “So, when the opportunity came up to purchase the horse I didn’t hesitate and formed a syndicate with some good friends. It’s been a good result.”

That it has. Pilkington, who also formed the popular ‘Horse Training Packages’ company a few years ago, urged Darren Thomas to take a share in Keen Array, and the speedy neddy

carries the increasingly familiar navy, white, lime green colours of Thomas’s Seymour Bloodstock.

International, Australia’s largest meat processing company, and is an avid investor in the Australian thoroughbred industry,” Pilkington adds. “Darren is also a partner in my Horse Training Packages company and last year purchased the former Newlands Stud in Victoria’s north east, which has since been leased to Woodside Park.

“Darren has 30 mares in his boutique band which includes Gavroche, the dam of last week’s Breeders’ Plate winner, Performer, who we sold for $450,000 at the Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling sale through our friends and breeding advisors at Newhaven Park.

“Other top flight race mares include Gregers, Don’t Doubt Mamma and Zurella who were traded through the mare sales this season, so Seymour Bloodstock is having success on both sides of the sales rostrum, as well as on the track.

“Apart from Keen Array we’ve got Salsamour who is showing a lot of promise and was second in the (Group Two) Stutt Stakes a little over a week ago, a smart filly called Snogging, another classy filly with John Sargent named Luvaluva, Melbourne Group winner Merchant Navy and Woulda Thought So.

“He (Woulda Thought So) is by So You Think and won his maiden at Ballarat last Thursday. He is being set for the (Group Three) Carbine Club Stakes at Flemington on Derby Day (4 November) and he’s particularly exciting.

“We had a couple of drinks to celebrate on Thursday night after the Ballarat win and I woke up the next morning with six missed calls from people in Hong Kong looking to buy him.”

The Gilgai Stakes ended a bitter sweet day for Sun Stud, according to Sales & Nominations Manager, Phil Marshall.

“Sun’s 2YO colt, Grand Challenge, dumped his rider, Mark Zahra on the way to the barrier for the Listed Maribyrnong Trial Stakes at Flemington and ended up being a late scratching,” Marshall explains. “A disappointing result to say the least, but fortunately no harm done to either Grand Challenge or Mark.

“So, it was a particularly good result when Keen Array added another stakes victory to his tally and it illustrates what a great sire Bel Esprit, continues to be.

“After eight successive state sires’ titles in Victoria, he now stands at our Queensland farm where’s he been very popular.

“The Gilgai also saw a great run from Malibu Style, who is by our headline stallion in Victoria, in Magnus. Malibu Style is a stakes winner in Perth and Melbourne - the Bel Esprit Stakes ironically - and I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up snaring a Group race this spring based on his Gilgai performance.”

HOOFNOTE: The Gilgai Stakes (registered as the Baguette Stakes and known as the Rupert Steele from 1987-1998) is named after the Victorian farm of Rick Jamieson, breeder of Black Caviar, whose sire, Bel Esprit, is also sire of Keen Array.

It’s been well over 12 months since Happy Bunny (Fully Fledged) graced the winner's circle so it was pleasing to see the former flying machine back to

his best with a brilliant win in Saturday's feature event in Macau.

Happy Bunny, under Mauritian jockey Akash Aucharuz, showed all of his old dash when he burst past his heavily-backed stablemate Wealthy East (Patapan), to win the 2017 Magic Millions 2YO Sale Trophy (1200m).

The six-year-old gelding was rated one of the fastest horses in Macau last season when nothing could match him away from the gates and for speed. However, he then lost his way halfway through last season and has been really struggling in his past eight runs.

On Saturday, instead of persisting for the lead as we have so often seen with the gelding, Aucharuz wisely sat off the stablemate Wealthy East until well in the straight. Happy Bunny pounced at the 200 metres and raced away for

an easy win over Wealthy East, with Cheerful Fish (Fully Fledged) running on well for third. Second favourite Luen On Treasure (Dane Shadow) made good ground late from the tail of the field for fourth, with race favorite Mr Singh (Exceed And Excel) struggling back in eighth spot.

Happy Bunny is a big strong imposing type that at his fighting weight on Saturday of 1275 pounds was head and shoulders over Wealthy East, who scaled at 1035 pounds. His time of 1:08.40 was a personal best for the gelding and his first win at the 1200 metres, a distance that he has fallen short of in the past.

Saturday’s feature was a prelude to this year Magic Millions 2YO’s in Training Sale to be conducted at their Gold Coast Sales Complex today and tomorrow. The sales will once again be beamed live to the MJC Member’s Lounge where Macau owners and trainers will be able to bid online for the horse of their choice.

Krystrump the tonic for Leyshan

New Zealand import Krystrump (New Trumps) provided trainer Peter Leyshan with the perfect stimulant in a convincing win in the Class Two over 1800 metres on Saturday.

Leyshan was only released from hospital a few days earlier after undergoing back surgery to relieve nerve pressure caused by two ruptured discs. Leyshan was at the track with the aid of a back brace support and could not hide his delight with the win.

“Well that was the perfect tonic after what I’ve been through lately,” he said.

“I’ve been suffering considerable pain in my left leg for some time and for awhile I thought I might have needed a new hip.

“However an MRI showed it was all nerve damage caused by the discs so while I’ve still got a ways to go at least I’ll end up pain free.”

By Harry Troy @anz_news

Happy Bunny gives them the slip

There was nothing to impede Krystrump on Saturday who was given a well-timed ride by Irish jockey Wayne Smith, charging to the front inside the 200 metres for a length and a half win over Same Beauty (Showcasing), with Chromium Alloy (Testa Rossa) running on for third.

Whilst it was only Krystrumps second win in Macau, the gelding has been a handy proposition for his connections Yanese Limited with four other placed efforts in Macau including second in this year’s Macau Derby (MAC Gr 1, 1800m) behind Sacred Man (Fastnet Rock). In his ten runs in enclave to date Krystrump is already over the HK$1,200,000 in prize money since arriving.

The most controversial race of the day was without doubt the Class Six over 1350 metres on the sand that was eventually awarded to the Victor Chan-trained Rosary Diamond (Avonbridge) ridden by Horace Lam.

With only a small field of six runners punters only had eyes for Peter Ho’s mount Gold On (Bushranger) who was always in the red to eventually jump at $1.80. In a tough slugging performance that seen the favorite under the whip from the 600 metres, Gold On crossed the line with a nose to spare over Rosary Diamond, with Cheerful Companion (No Excuse Needed) who was severely checked away from the gates flashing home for third.

Luis Corrales, the rider of Cheerful Companion, fired in a protest against the winner Gold On citing interference soon after the start.

The MJC steward’s panel, headed by Australian Peter Dompkins, found that Gold On had shifted in when insufficiently clear of Cheerful Companion causing him to be severely checked, losing considerable ground.

They concluded that the amount of ground lost in the interference was far greater than the beaten margin, and the placings were amended to read Rosary Diamond first, Cheerful Companion second and Gold On relegated back to third.
