Gifted and Talented class placement interviews underway

Since last week, Ms Edwards,

Ms Sofo and I have been

interviewing potential students

for the 2014 Gifted and

Talented Students program. We

have certainly met a lively and

interesting bunch of young men

and their parents!

The program uses both testing and interview to select suitable

students. We’re aiming to find young men who are intelligent but

also well-rounded, curious people interested in more than the

classroom. The young men we’ve met have certainly been

intelligent and among them we’ve encountered some outstanding

sportsmen, talented artists and musicians, civic leaders and young

people with wonderful dreams for the future.

Interviews continue into early next week, when a final list of

students will be determined, along with a waiting list.

Rainbow Street Turns 90

younger than Gough Whitlam or

turns 90 this week. Like these

three famous leaders, Rainbow

Street must have seen some

extraordinary things. If you have a connection to our neighbour,

why not pop along to the celebrations. See the flyer in this

newsletter for details.

School Video underway

Last week, photographer, Mike O’Grady spent two

days in the school taking video shots of classes,

activities and sport that form part of our life at

Randwick Boys’ High School. He also interviewed

some of our outgoing Year 12 students and some

parents.

The project is to complete a video of the school that

tells potential parents what a great place we are!

Mike will be returning on August 28 to capture some

of The Show, complete interviews and view a few

more classes.

I’m looking forward to seeing the final product and launching it on

our website in Term 4. I know it will be a great statement about our

great school and the magnificent staff, students and parents who

make it such a terrific place!

Great Sporting Success!

Last week, nine Grade Sport teams made it into the semi-finals. Of

those teams, five played in the finals held on Wednesday. Along

with members of the

Executive, I visited some

of the games. I arrived just

after the 13s Rugby had

achieved an outstanding

victory against Homebush.

This team was undefeated

throughout the season and

only in the finals did they

even concede any points

against them by the opposing team!

The 15s game was underway and I was impressed to see Martin

Pakofe score a try moments after second half kick-off. When I left,

Randwick was ahead 25-0 against arch rival Epping and went on to

win.

By all accounts the 2nds had a thrilling game. Down 7-0 when I left

to visit another sport, they ultimately won 12-10 in a closely fought

contest, once again against Epping. The dogged defence and

never say die attitude was evident in their play I watched and I am

sure these boys thoroughly deserved their win.

Our Hockey Opens played Homebush at Ryde and sadly went

down 1-0. I know the team was disappointed, but their

determination and grit was evident right up to the last minute.

Coach, Ms Andrewartha, paid tribute to the boys’ exceptional

teamwork and noted that over four years, the senior team members

not only had grown in their own skills but also had established a

legacy through their mentoring of younger players. They have left

behind the seeds of a future champion team.

Finally, the Tennis 2nds also had a great win against North Sydney.

Their win capped an exciting and successful day for our students

and ended a marvellous season of winter sport.

It is interesting that both Homebush and Epping, against whom we

often find ourselves pitted in finals, are schools with in excess of a

thousand students each. Their size gives them the advantage of

having more students from whom to draw teams, so Randwick’s

achievements are all the greater for this.

Congratulations to all students who participated in Grade Sport this

season and especially to those teams who won yesterday: an

outstanding effort!

Disability Provisions in the HSC.

Parents and caregivers may have read or heard recently about disability provisions for the HSC. A recent report by the Ombudsman found that public schools were under-represented in applications to the Board of Studies although proportionally, government schools have a greater number of students with disabilities.

The following information is from the Board of Studies site (www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au). We have a number of students who will receive disability provisions for the HSC and a number whom we have identified in other years. You may already have been contacted by us. If you think that your child may be eligible for disability provisions, I urge you to contact our Learning and Support Teacher, Mr Burke (9399-3122) to discuss the possibility of applying.

Board of Studies information.

Disability provisions for the Higher School Certificate examinations

Disability provisions in the HSC are practical arrangements designed to help students who couldn't otherwise make a fair attempt to show what they know in an exam room. The provisions granted are solely determined by how the student’s exam performance is affected. Provisions may include braille papers, large-print papers, use of a reader and/or writer, extra time or rest breaks.

Applying for disability provisions

Students who wish to apply for disability provisions should see their Year Adviser, School Counsellor or Mr Burke, the Learning and Support Teacher.

How does the process work?

Once the Board of Studies has received the application, a letter acknowledging receipt is published. The application is processed at the Board of Studies.

The Board of Studies has a Panel of Specialists that includes medical practitioners, educational psychologists, and consultants

for the visually or hearing impaired. The category of the disability and the evidence presented will determine who reviews the file.

When a decision has been made, a decision letter listing the approved and/or declined provisions is published with a copy for both the principal and the student.

A note to parents If you are concerned about whether disability provisions apply for your child, you should contact the school Year Adviser or Counsellor.

The application form must be submitted by your child's school as it requires specific information about the difficulties your child may experience in a classroom or examination situation. This does not mean, however, that you should not be involved in the application process.

Who can apply for disability provisions?

Any HSC student with a disability recognised in the Commonwealth Disability Standards for Education 2005. The definition of ‘disability’ in the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 includes:

physical

intellectual

psychiatric

sensory

neurological and

learning disabilities, as well as

physical disfigurement and

the presence in the body of disease-causing organisms.

Disability provisions also apply to temporary and emergency-related disabilities. A typical example of an ‘emergency’ is where a student breaks their writing arm a week before an examination.

During Terms 3 and 4 we will be updating our medical records

systems to ensure we have the most up-to-date information on

your son’s health.

If you have a child with a medical condition you will receive a

copy of the new form in the mail and will need to fill it out and

return it to us as soon as you can.

If you do not receive a form and your son has a medical

condition, please contact the school so that we can make

arrangements to send you a form.

The school, through the information provided previously by

parents, has already started collecting some of this information.

The new forms will help us collect your son’s important medical

information and the introduction of new systems will mean we'll

be able to better manage the daily and emergency health needs

of your son.

We appreciate your support as we start collecting the

information, and if you have any questions please call the

school on 9399-3122.

Year 8 Languages Prizes in International Languages Competition

In the May 31st newsletter, Mr Duncombe mentioned the success of

the Year 8 Language boys who competed enthusiastically and ably

in a international languages competition – Language Perfect. This

was an online competition and as such, extremely suitable for

students living in our digital world.

In their category (50 – 100 students) they were ranked in the top

40% in French and the top 43% for Indonesian. This is indeed a

great achievement for boys who have only studied these languages

for a short time.

The following boys excelled in the competition with top scorer,

Anto John Mathews receiving an I-Pod shuffle as well as a Bronze certificate (1645 points - top 10% of 225,000 competitors).

Benjamin Coan, very competitive and not far behind, also received a Bronze certificate (1378 points - top 10% of 225,000 competitors).

Two boys also received Credit certificates, (putting them in the

top 20% of 225,000 competitors):

Jake Rowlands (800 points) and

Ashish Mathew (729 points).

All students in the French and Indonesian classes participated.

The following students received a Distinction certificate from

Mr Duncombe for their scores of 100 points plus:

Of the five teams who made it to their Grand Finals this week, four

were victorious and the fifth team, the 1st Grade Hockey team only

narrowly lost 1-0 in a valiant effort .

The winning teams were the mighty 13s Rugby boys who won 36-

10 against Homebush. This was the team I was lucky to coach and

I am proud to

say that the

boys played

their best game

all year in the

Grand Final, as

their opposition

had some very

big players and

were very

physical. While

our team was

clearly dominant, scoring 6 tries to 2, the big boys from Homebush

got near our line on a few occasions and our boys showed what

great defenders they are and held them out (all but twice!).

The Man of the Match was Raine Dellow, who scored 4 tries and

whose tackling inspired the rest of his team mates. The other points

were all scored by our other star, Tyrell Mayfield. However, every

player in the team put in a stellar performance! The 13s deserved to

be Premiers this year as they were undefeated all season and only

had their line crossed in the Final. They are a lovely bunch of young

men, who brought great credit to our school all year in the way they

played the game on the field and in their excellent sportsmanship.

The 14s Rugby team defeated Epping 33-0 in a spiteful match

which was unfortunately marred by an ugly incident at the end of

the game.

The 2nd Grade Rugby boys won in a thrilling contest against Epping,

12-10. Whew! What a great game of Rugby. The boys were also

undefeated all season, but came up against a highly fancied Epping

side, who had played all year in the 1st Grade Competition. Epping

were extremely well drilled and “looked the goods” when they were

leading by 5-0 in the first half, but the spirit and passion of the

Randwick boys inspired a fight back, with Kingston and Slade

Samagaio scoring the winning tries and Kingston scoring the

important conversion. The boys and their coaches, Mr George and

Mr Bladwell are still justifiably “pumped” about this great win.

Our 2nd Grade Tennis also won convincingly 5-1 against North

Sydney. This match started close in the initial two sets, which were

won in a tie break 4-3. After that the singles matches were won

more easily with Jeremy and Danny winning 6-0. Matthew Quach

won his singles 5-1, which led to the overall victory.

Congratulations, boys!

The Opens Hockey game was a hard fought affair, with three of our

players getting hurt and our boys playing with their customary

passion and spirit. In the end their injuries probably cost them the

game. Bad luck to the boys in this team. This committed group

richly deserved to win the premiership , and almost did it!

WELL DONE TO OUR GRAND FINALISTS! UP THE WICKS!

I had the pleasure of being present at the Zone Trophy

Presentation Ceremony after the Finals and was thrilled to receive

our 6 premiership trophies for 2013. They were for the above

mentioned Winter Premiers and also for the 14 Years Waterpolo

and 15s Cricket Premiers from the Summer season.

These trophies and the awards for our Swimming and Athletics

winners will be presented at a special Sports Assembly his Friday,

26th July.

All premiers and Age Champions will receive trophies at the end of

year Speech Day Ceremony.

SUMMER SPORT CHOICES This Monday the boys choose their Summer Sports. All boys have

been given a list of available sports in their Roll Classes. Please

make sure you choose wisely! I would love to see lots of Grade

teams ready for the upcoming Summer Grade sport season. It is

truly through Grade sport that our students can enjoy the thrill of

competing in a strong Zone Competition and can also contribute to

our long tradition of school sporting spirit of which Randwick is

proud.
