I would like to commend all Year 12 students for their superb dedication and commitment to their half yearly exams. Year 12 have completed all tasks with maturity and we look forward to celebrating their successes, once all marking has taken place.
Duke of Edinburgh
Mr Dimopoulos and our D of E participants are off on another trek at the end of next week.
We wish all students well on their journey, some to gain Bronze and some completing the Silver award. Thanks to Mr Dimopoulos for coordinating and giving up his time and knowledge to ensure the students complete the gruelling adventure. Well done to all involved.

Beach Volleyball Championships
Four students from Randwick Boys’ High School have been selected to participate in the Australian Junior Beach Volleyball Champion-ships in Bunbury, WA from 26-29 April 2018. We wish them luck!
These are their stories:
My name is Ben Schickinger (Yr 8). I have been selected for the under 15 State Beach Volleyball team. I will be representing the NSW squad. I got in with trials. We are leaving on the 25th of April and playing for 5 days at Bunbury WA, which is 30 minutes south of Perth. I have been playing for one and a half years and got into it, when my coach came to my primary school and encouraged me to come down to Coogee and have a go.
My name is Nima Amini (Yr 9) and I have been selected for the U17 State Beach Volleyball team. I will be heading off to Perth on the 25th of April to represent NSW. I will be returning on the 30th of April. I have been playing beach volleyball for 4 years, and my coach encouraged me to try out for the State team.
My name is Munkh Jargalsaikhan (Yr 9). I have been selected for the U15s NSW Beach Volleyball team to go to Perth to play against our age group in beach volleyball. I have been playing volleyball for 3 years, but I have been playing beach volleyball for only 4 months. We are leaving on the 25th of April for 5 days and versing other states. With my coach Marcos, I train 3-4 times a week at Coogee Beach. When we do NSW State training, we go train at beaches, such as Maroubra, Coogee and mainly Manly.
My name is Joshua Hill-ard (Yr 10). I have been playing volleyball for a year and a half. I started at Maroubra learning basics. When I had been playing for 2 weeks, I was invited to trial for the Sydney Metro Indoor team to play in a tournament against south, west and north. I was then invited to trial for the State indoor team and trialled and was accepted. In the State team we travelled to Queensland, Coomera, to play AJUV. I was then invited to an AUS camp to get identified and assessed. After Nationals ended, I picked up beach volley-ball in the off season of indoor, and got selected for the beach State team in U17 to play in WA.

Luka Lesson is a successful Aus-tralian writer, performance poet and hip-hop artist who has been studied across the world.
Luka is coming to Randwick Boys’ High School on Monday, 7th May, to perform some of his most popular poetry pieces! If you are in Year 8 or Year 11 Standard, you will need to make sure that your $10 is paid to the front office, or online, to secure your place.

Marine Biology CPR
On Thursday this week 05/04/18, during Period 3 and 4, the Year 9 Marine Biology class and I took part in a seminar and assess-ment conducted in the library. The incursion was broken up into two parts, the first session focused on the principals of first aid and the resuscitation process. We were required to listen to Amanda, a very qualified instructor who teaches trainees in first aid and safety in local health services, as well as other schools. She taught the class the entire Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) process and basic first aid, which has helped us gain a better understanding of important practices that might just save a life.
During the second session, we were all put to the test and were required to do both a practical and a theoretical assessment as part of our course requirement. Firstly, we got into pairs and demonstrated to Amanda the ‘Danger, Response, Send, Airway, Breathing, CPR, Defibrillation’ (DRSABCD) method, performing CPR on a special CPR mannequin. We had to do it correctly, otherwise we failed. It was fun and simple, but once this was all done, we were given a test paper where we needed to score 100% in order to pass. It was difficult for some, but fortunately, everyone passed which was amazing! On Friday the 06/04/18 we completed a practical water safety challenge, at the UNSW Pool; there we were assessed on our swimming ability and water safety knowledge in the field.
For the Year 8 students, who are considering selecting the Marine Biology course next year, the very first topic every Year 9 student must learn is the water safety and first aid component. Although Marine Biology is meant to be fun with many marine field trips and excursions, it is essential that everyone has a clear understanding of safety, the management of a situation and how to avoid any pos-sible dangers. The purpose of these assessments I talked about are to prove that you are trustworthy and able to manage a situation in case something goes wrong and keep safe when going on trips and doing activities. These assessments are run by the Royal Surf Life Saving Club and if you fail to pass all of them, you are still welcome to be in the course, but will miss out on exciting excursions. Overall, I really enjoyed this seminar and assessment and I am glad that we, as a class, passed! Thank you Amanda for coming over and assisting us with our training!

WAYS Youth Forum
Eight of our Year 10 and Year 11 students attended the WAYS Annual Youth Forum at the Woollahra Council Chamber on Thursday.
Students heard from special-ists in the fields of psychology, medicine, law enforcement and youth mental health and partici-pated in workshops with a diverse range of students from schools all over the Eastern Suburbs. Aimed at equipping students with the knowledge to make better deci-sions when it comes to drugs, alcohol, social media, and rela-tionships - we hope to soon share what we learned and continue to empower Randwick boys to be brave, respectful and successful at school and in their personal lives.

Nicholson Museum excursion
On Tuesday, Year 11 Ancient Historians were joined by their Year 9 and 10 Elective History colleagues to go to the Nicholson Museum at the University of Sydney.
They put their archaeological skills to the test in the store rooms under the museum to help the curators date and analyse the artefacts. Upstairs, the boys debated the ethical issues of reconstructions of history and ‘ownership’ of the past. Who knows – maybe we have a museum curator in our midst at Randwick Boys’ High school!

The term has come to an end in Year 9 History Elective as the boys have spent this week sharing their personal reconstructions of their chosen historical topic! All submissions reflected enthusiastic research as well as creativity in their detail and analysis. Well done!
