Joseph Heller was born in 1923 in Brooklyn, New York. He served as a bombardier in World War II and then attended New York University and Columbia University and then Oxford, the last on a Fullbright scholarship. He then taught for two years at Pennsylvania State University, before returning to New York,

where he began a successful career in the advertising departments of Time, Look and McCall's magazines. It was during this time that he had the idea for Catch-22. Working on the novel in spare moments and evenings at home, it took him eight years to complete.

Catch-22Joseph Heller

The 50th anniversary of Catch-22 's publication.

Explosive, subversive, wild and funny, 50 years on the novel's strength is undiminished. Reading Joseph Heller's classic satire is nothing less than a rite of passage. Set in the closing months of World War II in an American bomber squadron off the coast of Italy, Catch-22 is the story of a bombardier named Yossarian who is frantic and furious because thousands of people he has never even met keep trying to kill him. Joseph Heller's bestselling novel is an hilarious and tragic satire on military madness, and the tale of one man’s efforts to survive it.

Now You See HerJames Patterson

James Patterson’s most head-spinning, action-filled story yet.

Twenty-two-year-old Jeanine Fournier had looks to die for, a handsome police-officer husband and a carefree life in Key West. When she learnt that she was pregnant with their first child, her life was complete. Jeanine’s happiness was then shattered when she unearthed a terrible secret that caused her to run for her life and change her identity. Now, years later, an even greater horror leads her to risk everything she’s earned – a secure life in New York City, a prosperous career as a lawyer, even the daughter she loves – to return to Florida and confront the murderous evil she fled. In a story of wrenching suspense, James Patterson gives us his most head-spinning, action-filled story yet – a Hitchcock-like blend of unquenchable drama and pleasure.

The BrotherhoodYvette Erskine

One dead cop, one small island and an impact that will last a lifetime.

When Sergeant John White, mentor, saviour and all-round good guy is murdered during a routine callout, the tight-knit world of Tasmania Police is rocked to the core. An already difficult investigation into the death of one of their own becomes steeped in political complexities when the main suspect is identified as Aboriginal and the case, courtesy of the ever-hostile local media, looks set to make Palm Island resemble a Sunday afternoon picnic in comparison. And as the investigation unfolds through the eyes of the sergeant's colleagues, friends, family, enemies and the suspect himself, it becomes clear that there was a great deal more to John White – and the squeaky-clean reputation of the nation's smallest police service – than ever met the eye. The Brotherhood is a novel about violence, preconceptions, loyalties, corruption, betrayal and the question a copper should never need to ask: just who can you trust?

The VaultRuth Rendell

The brand new Wexford mystery.

The impossible has happened. Chief Inspector Reg Wexford has retired. Wexford takes great pleasure in his books, but, for all the benefits of a more relaxed lifestyle, he misses being the law. But a chance meeting with an old acquaintance changes everything. Tom Ede is now a Detective Superintendent, and is very keen to recruit Wexford as an adviser on a difficult case. The bodies of two women and a man have been discovered in the old coal hole of an attractive house in St John's Wood. The man's jacket pockets contain a string of pearls, a diamond and a sapphire necklace as well as other jewellery valued in the region of £40,000. It is not a hard decision for Wexford. He is intrigued and excited by the challenge, and, in the early stages, not really anticipating that this new investigative role will bring him into physical danger.

Straight ShooterMatthew Lloyd

A brutally honest account of an astonishing career from a man who is a straight shooter in more ways than one.

Matthew Lloyd at his peak was a goal kicking machine in an era where the power forward was fading from the game. A five-time all Australian, he topped the AFL goal kicking three times in his 270 game career and kicked the ton twice, his first in the Essendon Premiership season of 2000.

This book is the story of a kid driven by a fear of failure to climb the highest peaks in football. Of a young footballer who taught himself a process to become the most accurate shot for goal in the AFL after a tirade from one of his coaches. It is how a boy with natural ability became the captain of the Essendon Football Club, a premiership player and a life member of the AFL.

And now it is about the transformation into devoted father and a multi-media expert on AFL when it looked, from the outside, like his career was cut short before its time; of a testy relationship with his final coach and the bone crunching hit that saw him finish his time as a player on suspension. It looks at how he considered a future with other clubs before deciding to retire on his terms.

How to be CompassionateHis Holiness the Dalai Lama

The message of this book is as renowned as the Dalai Lama himself: that compassion is essential for individuals and for the world.

When we think of His Holiness, we immediately think of the compassion he embodies, and to which he has devoted his entire life. He suggests we pay close attention to the way we respond to everyone and to everything around us, explaining how caring for others can be a profound source of happiness on an individual level, which can then be extended outward in wider and wider circles. He goes on to describe basic mistakes (such as hatred towards others) that lead us into personal turmoil and interpersonal disruption. He helps us to understand how the transformation of our attitude is possible and suggests how we can implement compassion in our daily lives, and go on to live with greater care and concern for all beings.
