    RAJIV GANDHI

Rajiv Gandhi, as Prime Minister of India, in 1984-89, brought

with him a brightness and hope, as well as a believable vision of

the twenty first century--qualities then badly needed to speed up

the process of achieving the economic development of India.

He projected an image of modernity and infused a new confidence

among people; this was marked by a vision largely techno-critic

and relying heavily on science and technology. He was stated to be

a man in hurry, aspiring to make India a technologically

advanced nation by the next two decades, with the inputs of

modern science and technology. His name is synonymous with

the ushering in of Computer Revolution in India.

He gave a clarion call to the nation to take a quantum leap into the

twenty first century. It was his dream of modernizing India, of

bringing her fully technologically, economically and socially into

the new millennium. It was a dream of a strong, proud and United

India, which would march in to the twenty first century with

    courage and confidence.

An in-depth study of his writings and speeches shows his mind

and ideology, as well as his frankness and sincere zeal for theeffective utilization of science and technology towards the

    welfare of mankind.

Here are some character traits of Rajiv Gandhi and though this

description is far from being comprehensive, it can shed some light

    on his personality.

    HIS NATURE

Rajiv Gandhi was, by nature, an active person. His personality was

precisely combative, conquering and action-oriented. He was on

the move, with the impetus which urged him, more than anyone

else, to transcribe his thoughts and his projects into the real world.

There was another side to Rajiv Gandhi as well, a rather

introverted, self-contained, even pessimistic side which tampered

    his good cheer and generosity.

    HIS SENSITIVITY

His sensitivity was dominated by his reasons and he tend to

analyze his emotional reactions in the slightest details, as if he

wanted to hold them at bay so that they could not overwhelm or

weaken him. His was anxious, shy & did not liked to be in theforefront. He was a perfectionist, who examined, organized and

planned everything according to his logic. Rajiv wore his heart on

his sleeves and could not hide his emotions.

    HIS BEHAVIOUR

Rajiv Gandhi was a very well mannered and a cordial person.

Before he took any action, he would cautiously ponder over things

and would review any possible alternative and reaction. He strivedsystematically to find the best possible response to any given

problem. As far as his behavior is concerned, some of the

adjectives which may be used are serious, competent, reasonable,

modest, honest, loyal, reserved, shy, helpful, logical, hardworking,

tactful, patient, precise, concrete, spiritual etc. Very few persons

were able to guess his mood of the moment.

HIS WILL & HIS INNER MOTIVATIONS

He was a leader whose strength and nobleness naturally aroused

his entourages respect and adherence and his legitimacy was

unquestioned. His sense of commandment, his honour, his prestige

and his charisma was such that had always put him into the

spotlight wherever he went. His desire for accomplishment went

through a quite peculiar and original form, in the sense that he

could not resist the appeal of mystery and of withdrawing from

events and situations. His natural inclinations often prompted him

to isolate himself and to keep his private secrets intact.

    HIS ABILITY TO TAKE ACTION

Rajiv GANDHI, skillfully made use of his energy and he was like

the arrow that reaches its target with great precision. With piercing

eye and sharp mind, he took action meticulously and efficiently.

Like the surgeon with his scalpel, he knew exactly what he wanted

and he belonged to the category of specialists, not the generalists.Critical, pernickety, extremely organized, he had the ability to

    foresee and to analyze.

    A GOOD DIPLOMAT

Rajiv Gandhi was a diplomat and a schemer and, better than

anyone else, he could avoid all traps and could take action behind

the scenes. His extravagant character actually concealed a deep

perception of people and situations. The diplomacy he used whenhis interests were at stake favoured the success of his endeavours.

    A LEADER IN TRUE SENSE

Rajiv Gandhi was a man of courage, conviction, principles, ethics

and moral values. And above all, this person was a true nationalist,

who desired changes in many fields which were vital for the

betterment of this country called India. He was a leader in true

sense who believed in leading from the back and not from thefront. Had he been with us today, I believe we would have been

    living in a different India.

    A VISIONARY

Once while addressing the Joint Session of

the US Congress and India, Rajiv Gandhi

impressed everyone with his speech, as a

prime minister, when he famously said, India is an old country, but a young

nation; and like the young everywhere, we

are impatient. I am young and I too have a

dream. I dream of an India, strong,

independent, self reliant and in theforefront of the front ranks of the nations

of the world in the service of mankind.
