Rajiv Gandhi, the former prime minister of India, died on 21st May 1991 (Tuesday) in a bomb

explosion at Sriperumbudur (near Madras) in Tamilnadu, when a human bomb Ms. Dhanu, an activist of Liberation Tigers of Sri Lanka, activated explosives strapped to her body, while pretending to garland him.

The present article is an exercise in exploring the possibilities of predicting the events from the horoscopes of very near and dear ones, as an alternative, instead of the horoscope of native himself. For the analysis of thecrucial date, on which Rajiv Gandhi lost his life, his wife Mrs. Sonia Gandhi’s horoscope was examined in thelight of Ashtakvarga method, a crown jewel of Vedic Astrology.

In the above horoscope, 30 points in Ascendant indicate a good personality; 37 points in 2nd house signifiessteadiness of mind, close followers, quest for learning; the most strong 3rd house with 38 points indicatecourage & valour, tolerance and stability of mind in adverse conditions; a low 24 points in 7th house and 23points in 8th house indicate short span of married life of the native. The house of marriage(7th) determines



the degree of happiness and success the native derives through marriage. She has got 33 points in 10thhouse. The 10th house signifies political power, fame, self control and dominance; it being 4th from 7th, alsosignifies the mother of the spouse (in this case Mrs. Indira Gandhi).

Venus is very strong in her horoscope Shadbala-wise and has got 6 points in natal chart. Venus signifiesCalm, pleasing, level-headed, never irritating person. It also signifies beauty, fame, love marriage andradiance. Direction of Venus is South-East and perhaps the very strong Venus, Significator planet for spouse,

caused her to marry in a South-East country. In her horoscope, sign of 7th house is Capricorn andcoincidentally the moon sign of India is also Capricorn, therefore choice of spouse narrowed down to India inwhole of South-East region. Saturn is very weak in natal chart with only 2 benefic points in Cancer where it is posited and that too in thekakshya of Venus (the significator planet of spouse), which is not one of the contributors of these points. Ithas become even weaker in Navamsha Ashtakvarga where it has got only 1point. Saturn is the 7th and 8thlord hence its transit will always be crucial to the well-being of husband and results would be reflected on her spouse. Now see the following facts on the fateful date:

(1) Saturn was transiting in Capricorn with ZERO benefic points, and that too in the kakshya of its bitter enemy Sun, as 7th lord. Capricorn is the 7th house in natal chart, and it is also 7th if counted from Saturn'sown posited situation in natal chart (because it was in Ascendant itself). By both theories of transit, it had togive results pertaining to 7th house.

(2) Saturn being the 8th lord also, has special propensity to do evil. Eighth house is the 12th from 9th

(indicating loss of “Bhagya" or "Fortune"). Whenever Saturn will be in distress during transit, it will directlyaffect the Spouse, Married Life and "Bhagya" in general. Saturn was transiting the 8th house, if counted fromnatal Moon (in Gemini). The weak Saturn, in natal chart as well as in transit, would invariably invoke negativesignificances of concerned houses. 8th house is considered for the marital status of a woman, suddennessand unexpectedness. Some of the negative significances of this house are misery, loss of limb, cause of death and severe mental anguish. Saturn was under heavy stress on 21st May 1991 to cast its most evileffect on Sonia. Rajiv's death brought all of these negative Significances for Sonia.

(3) Saturn was transiting the 3rd house if counted from the Kakshya lord Sun's natal position (in Scorpio).Sun is bitter enemy (Adhishatru) of Saturn, as reckoned from Sonia's horoscope. The 3rd house is also



termed as "House of Sorrows". The lethal effect of Saturn was even further enhanced in its bitter enemy'skakshya.

(4) If there was still some auspiciousness left in Saturn, that was wiped out by its retrograde motion on thatday. Any astrologer with little knowledge of Ashtakvarga system would have said after considering all these

factors that the spouse of the native was in grave danger.

(5) Vimsottari Dasha (upto 3 levels) operating at that time was of Sat-Rahu-Sat . Saturn and Rahu, both arenatural malefics. Saturn was malefic by all corners, as analyzed earlier, hence fructification of inauspiciousresults could only be anticipated in its Mahadasha and Pratyantardasha operating simultaneously. Antardasha was of Rahu, which normally behaves like Saturn. Rahu is posited in the kakshya of Venus (thesignificator planet of spouse) in natal chart, hence, Rahu's transit results will always be reflected on her spouse.

(6) Yogini Dasha running at that time was Bhraamari-Sankata (Mars-Rahu). Both are again natural malefics.

The transit of Mars:

Mars, though a Yogakaraka for Cancer Ascendant, is very weak in natal chart with only 2 benefic points andthat too in the kakshya of enemy Saturn, which is not one of the contributors of these points. It is posited inSagittarius at 01-10' degrees. The 2nd degree in Sagittarius has been termed "Mrituansh" (the degree of death) for Mars. It is also combust. Now see the following facts on the fateful date:

(1) Mars was transiting in Cancer, his debilitation position, in the Kakshya of its enemy Saturn. Saturn itself ismost adverse to the spouse in natal chart as well as in transit, as explained above.

(2) Mars was transiting the 8th house, if counted from its own posited situation in natal chart (Sagittarius).Negative significances of 8th house has already been described above in Saturn's case. Mars added the"explosives" factor to these significances.

(3) The Sookshma Dasa of Mars was operating on the fateful day.

(4) The day of Rajiv’s death was a Tuesday, the day of Mars.

The transit of Venus:

Venus is very strong in natal chart with 6 benefic points and posited in the kakshya of Moon, which is one of the contributors of these points. Venus is very strong Shadbal-wise also. Venus being significator planet of 7th house and the spouse, the quality of married life of the native had to be very good, whatever the span of married life was. But being the 11th lord it has become malefic. Now see the following facts on the fatefuldate:

(1) Venus was transiting in Gemini, with 4 points, in the Kakshya of Mercury. Mercury is not one of thecontributor of these points. Venus's transit in a kakshya, void of contribution by Kakshya lord's point, causestroubles and affliction to the spouse, ancient scriptures says so. Now count its position in transit from Kakshyalord's position in natal chart (Scorpio). Venus, the significator of conjugal bliss, was in 8th house (Gemini)which is significator of marital status of a woman, invoking negative significances of this house due to itstransit position explained above.

(2) Venus was in 12th house (Gemini) if counted from natal Ascendant (Cancer) invoking negative



significances of this house such as mental anguish, loss of spouse, fear from overt and covert enemies.

All five malefics were in "Evil" Nakshatras:

Ashtakvarga method prescribes a system in which Sarvaashtak totals of various signs are summed from Ascendant to the position of malefics in natal chart (both signs included). This sum is multiplied by 7 andproduct divided by 27. The remainder shows the asterism (from Ashwini), which itself or its trines, whentransited by malefics brings misfortune and other afflictions to the native. Applying the above mentionedmethod, we get the following results:

a.

Ascendant to Saturn = (30) x 7 = 210 divided by 27 = 7.777Remainder = 0.777 x 27 = 20.98 or 2121st asterism is Uttarashadha and its trines are Krittika and Uttaraphalguni.Sun was transiting Krittika at that moment.

b.

Mars to Ascendant = (23+24+23+29+33+29+21+30 = 212) x 7 = 1484 divided by 27 = 54.96Remainder = 0.96 x 27 = 25.92 or 26

26th asterism is Uttarabhadrapad and its trines are Pushya and Anuradha.Mars was transiting Pushya Nakshatra at the time of incident lord of which is Saturn. Mars's transit inSaturn's nakshatra (even sub-lord was also Saturn) at a time when Saturn itself was highly malefic intransit for her and running its Mahadasha also, again helped in adding the "Blood", "Violence","Explosives" factor to the incident.

c.

Ascendant to Mars = (30+37+38+27+23+23 = 178) x 7 = 1246 divided by 27 = 46.148Remainder = 0.148 x 27 = 3.996 or 44th asterism is Rohini and its trines are Hasta and Shravana.Saturn was transiting Shravana.

d.

Rahu to Ascendant = (29+21+30 = 80) x 7 = 560 divided by 27 = 20.740Remainder = 0.740 x 27 = 19.98 or 2020th asterism is Poorvashadha and its trines are Bharani and Poorvaphalguni.Rahu was transiting Poorvashadha.

e.

Asc.to Rahu = (30+37+38+27+23+23+24+23+29+33+29 = 316) x 7 = 2212 divided by 27 = 81.926Remainder = 0.926 x 27 = 25.002 or 2525th asterism is Poorva Bhadrapad and its trines are Punarvasu and Vishakha.Ketu was transiting Punarvasu.

All the five malefics were transiting simultaneously in such Nakshatras which according to Ashtakvargaprinciples would have brought misfortune to the native, even singly. An unimaginable situation really.

A striking feature at this time was that all planets (including Ascendant); except Venus; were in asterismswhose Sub -lords are also malefics. Remember, Mercury is a malefic for Cancer Ascendant being the 3rdlord, and in this horoscope, also associated with two natural malefics, Sun and Ketu.

The "South-East" direction was most inauspicious to her:

The distribution of strength among eight directions; reckoned from Sarvaashtakvarga and the cardinaldirections of planets; in Sonia's horoscope; as per fixed Zodiac system (Sthirachakra) applied in"Prashnamarga", is as follows:

East : 13.798% Rahu

South-East : 9.347% Moon



South : 14.911% Saturn

South-West : 16.914%

West : 11.128% Sun,Mercury,Jupiter,Venus,Ketu

North-West : 10.237% Mars

North : 10.460%

North-East : 12.908%

As it is evident from the above chart that South-East direction is highly inauspicious to her, having leaststrength, and it has proved so. Sriperumbudur, where Rajiv died and Sri Lanka where from the assailantshailed, both are in exactly South-East of her place of residence New Delhi. Moon is situated in South-Eastand is posited in 12th house (which signifies "Loss of Spouse" and "Loss in Travel") in natal chart in theKakshya of Mars (which signifies "Explosives"). It was transiting the 3rd house (House of sorrows) on thefateful day, if counted from the natal self. Therefore the loss of spouse due to explosives in South-Eastdirection was quite indicative in her horoscope during an inauspicious period. The next inauspicious directionfor her is North-West where the Punjab is situated. The whole Gandhi family has remained threatened fromthis region after “Operation Blue Star”.

The horary principles and the event :

As per horary astrology principles, Saturn has dark complexion, stiff hairs, large teeth, windy temperamentand cruel nature. Just remember the photograph of Rajiv's assassin Ms.Dhanu, and you will find a strikingsimilarity in her personality with above description. Saturn's direction is “South” and inherent nature is"Earthly". The assassination was in 'South' and on the 'Earth'. The Capricorn sign signifies "Low lying area"and the sign Cancer signifies "Sea". Saturn's transit in Capricorn and Mars's transit in Cancer ensured thatassassination took place at low lying area near the Sea (Sriperumbudur is at sea level).

The value of time is inestimable. All objects in natureare produced in "Time", developed in "Time" anddestroyed in "Time". The truth of these statementsrequires no further proof. It stands unchallenged. Timehas got it's own properties. Creative, protective and

destructive forces are embedded in the womb of time.If there could be a tool, which can give us a clue as towhen the various kinds of creative and destructiveforces are in operation, it would be of great help. Aperson can time his efforts to do the right thing at theright moment so that his activities are in harmony withthe laws of nature.

To understand it further, just see that there is a time to sow and a timeto reap. Why not we do the sowing operation during the harvestseason? Nature would be against us. During the sowing season,creative forces are in operation. When an important activity is to be

The constellations (Nakshatras) Shravana, Rohini, Anuradha, Swati, Revati, Moola, Uttarashada,Uttarabhadrapad, Shatbhisha are highly favourable for nuptials.

ii. The constellations Pushya, Dhanishta, Mrigshira, Ashwini, Chitra, Punarvasu are ordinary

iii. The rest of the constellations are to be rejected.

iv. At the time of nuptials, no planet should occupy the 8th house.

If one is adept in astrology or has a keen desire to explore the mysteries of this science, then Ashtakvarga system should be applied for much finer results. Ashtakvarga is a branch of Vedic Jyotishwhich fell into disuse due to laborious and error prone calculations involved. But with the advent of computers, Ashtakvarga has become the subject of modern times. Our ancient sages never advocatedfor a "son" - but for a "virtuous son". All their astrological wisdom has been applied so that an intelligentand dutiful son could be born to a couple.

Ashtakvarga system needs that date chosen by the couple for nuptials should confirm to the followingset of conditions simultaneously:

a..

Jupiter must have minimum 4 auspicious points (more, the better), on that day, in his own Ashtakvarga.

b. Jupiter should be in a kakshya of such lord who is a contributor of these auspicious points.

c..

The kakshya lord for Jupiter should neither be an enemy ("Shatru") nor a bitter enemy (Adhi-shatru)to it. Better will be if the kakshya lord is best friend ("Adhimitra") of Jupiter.

d.. The sum of auspicious points for all seven planets, on the required date, should be more than 30.

e..

If a male child is desired, Jupiter should be in a male planet's Kakshya. Male planets are Jupiter,Mars and the Sun.

f..

If a female child is desired, Jupiter should be in a female planet's kakshya. Female planets areVenus and the Moon.

g..

When Jupiter is in the Kakshya of Mercury or Saturn, those dates should be avoided because thesetwo planets are eunuchs.

h. Jupiter should be transiting in a sign which is strong in native's Sarvaashtakvarga.

i. Sun should be transiting in a sign having highest auspicious points in Jupiter's Ashtakvarga.

j. For precise timing during the chosen day, sexual intercourse should be during the period, when asign is rising containing highest number of auspicious points in Jupiter's Ashtakvarga. Conception is

most likely to take place at this time.

One should also use "Chaughadia muhurtas" to ascertain auspicious intra-day timings. If efforts for conception takes place during a good "Chaughadia muhurta" within the chosen date, specially the"Amrit chaughadia", it would ensure the well-being of the foetus during pregnancy. Childlesscouples may please note.

However, if one is unable to calculate dates with such precision and confirmation to allthese sets of conditions, at least one can plan conception during a month whichcoincides with the Sun's transit in the sign having highest auspicious points in Jupiter's

Ashtakvarga. Classical texts say that a virtuous son will be born out of this conception.

All this exercise in choosing a proper date and time for the purpose of conception will ensur e that allpossible good cosmic vibrations are centered such that the energy generated would nullify all other

unfavourable factors and enhances the chances of success of the effort. A person is thus enabled toremove, neutralize, counter-act or overcome the evils indicated by his/her horoscope. Horoscopy isdiagnostic. It merely points out the ills but prescribes no remedies. Suppose evil planets in the fifthhouse indicate loss of children. Then, proper timing of consummation, when ethereal currents releasedfrom the planets are so powerful as to minimize or modify the afflictions to the extent that the birth andsurvival of at least some children may be ensured. Proper timing of efforts helps one to minimize or modify the evils of our past Karma to a considerable extent.

The modern architects have adopted the ancient science of Vaastu-Shastra in recent times due to itsefficacy. Why not gynecologists and obstetricians can utilize this science of astrology? They caneffectively guide their patients in a meaningful way and enable them to bear 'virtuous and healthy child'instead of bearing a "physically healthy child" only. Their ultra-sound machines can indicate physicaldeformity only, of a to be born child, and that too, without any remedy. The science of astrology is

preventive too. One must be advised to sow in the proper sowing season only.

On further analysis of Mars's transit at microscopic scale, we find that it was in the'Kakshya of Venus'. Venus is the significator planet of romance and vehicles, both. It completed thepicture. Violent death was in the vehicle along with her fiance Dodi Fayed. Furthermore, Mars wasin Libra which happens to be the 12th house in her horoscope. 12th house signifies "Loss of alimb", "Loss of spouse", "foreign land", "fear from enemies". In her case "paparazzi" played the roleof enemy.

As we have already examined above that Diana's 3rd House was very strong and affected her lifemost. It is amazing that on the date of accident: Sun, Mars, Saturn and Mercury were transiting inthe 3rd from their own natal positions. This is called "Bhaava Gocharaashtak ". Mercury is combustin Di's horoscope and rest of the three planets are natural malefics. A staggering 63.33% of pointswere going to 3rd house on 30th Aug.(19 points out of total 30 points). All the four contributor planets of these 19 points to the 3rd house were malefic in nature. Out of these 4 planets, Sun andSaturn were in a kakshya whose lords has not contributed to the points in their respectiveashtakvargas in the transited sign. Mercury also entered in such kakshya on 31st Aug. Thissituation enhanced the inauspiciousness of 3rd house and the factor of death by hounding"paparazzi" emerged due to it. The inauspicious significations of the 3rd house are 'fights' and'sorrows' which were invoked with the increasing malefic planetary tendencies in 3rd house near the date of accident. In medical astrology, 3rd house signifies longevity, neck, throat, shoulders,bones, upper limbs and right ear. Diana suffered most in these part of her body during the accident.

The 'body in general' and 'longevity' is also signified by 1st house. On the date of accident, her chart shows value in the row 'Ashub%' (inauspiciousness) as 69

while value of 'Shubh%' (auspiciousness) is only 2. The contributor of the 3 pointsto the 1st house was Jupiter, which was highly malefic to Diana, as has been

discussed below. It was also in a kakshya whose lord has not contributed a point(denoted by 'i' in chart).

Jupiter is 5th lord and hence a benefic for Scorpio Ascendant, in general astrological parlance. First of all, Jupiter is in Capricorn at 11:47 deg. in natal chart. The 11th degree in Capricorn hasbeen called "Mrituansh" for Jupiter. Nadi-Granthas from South India describes about 132 suchdegrees for various planets which are "Mrituansh" (Degrees of Death) for these planets. It has beensaid that when a planet is posited in 'Mrituansh' in natal chart, it causes death or death likesufferings in its main or sub-periods of dashas. Being lord of 2nd house, it is also a 'Maarkesh'. It isvery weak in Di's natal chart 'Shadbala wise' and 'Ashtakvarga wise'; it's avgd. relative natalstrength is only 0.65 ( 1 happens to be optimum). It was highly debilitated in natal chart being inCapricorn.

On the date of her death, it was again highly debilitated being in Capricorn where it has got only 3benefic points. It was in the kakshya of Mercury, which is not a contributor to these 3 points and is abitter enemy ( Adhishatru) of Jupiter, and combust in her horoscope. All these factors enhanced thelethal effect of already malefic natal Jupiter on 30th-31st Aug'97. Furthermore, Jupiter was in 12thposition from natal Moon on that date which signified "increase of grief". The Venus was 8th fromnatal moon which caused the involvement of a vehicle in the accident. Venus was in the kakshya of Moon which added liquor (drunken driver of Mercedes) factor to the tragedy.

One thing is noticeable here. The Capricorn is a "movable" sign. Its direction is "South" and it gainsstrength in "Night". It is "four legged (Chatushpaad )". It's place of movement is "Earth". Do you findsome thing in Diana's accident in a "four wheeled", "movable" vehicle at "night" in "South" of London (Paris) at "Earth" ? Both "Maarkesh", 2nd lord Jupiter and 7th lord Venus are posited inSouth, if directions are calculated through Fixed Zodiac system of Varahmihira.

Now see that Jupiter is posited in 3rd House, both in Lagna and Navamsha, providing its allinauspiciousness to this house. The media was her biggest irritation throughout her life after marriage. Paparazzi (signified by 3rd house) became the cause of her death was also evident fromthis fact.

predict anything with confirmation. For example suppose

someone hasa rahu placed in 64th Navmansha from Moon. Now the

time when Saturncrosses Rahu in transit then that time will be problematic

for the

mother of the native. There are many other things whichcan only be

confirmed by D-9 ( Navmansha).

According to Sage Parashara a planet placed in rashis of planets

occupying kendras of Navmasha have special significance.

Alsoplanets which get debilitated in D-9 loose their significance

andvice-versa.

So you see, one cannot arrive at a conclusion by justlooking at

Rashi Chart unless he sees all the degrees and remembers
