A welcome to Norm Taylor in Farouche, even if WW’s yachts did not leave him much room! It was a pity that it was only the first time around No 4 otherwise he would have been 5th. SM 354 Vantage, did not have a MOB completed so was not counted. She was 3rd across the finish line. Chequemate went past in 6th place just 6mins behind first and finished 15th. (If a photo of your boat features in a race report, you owe Mark Windward a short article for “a bit about my Boat series”.)

Mark Windward Trophy Awards Day Mark Windward

The idea for a Mark Windward Trophy started out to be an in-between seasons race between summer and winter, and to avoid withdrawal symptoms of sailors - a Clayton’s Race, and not too serious. Due to bad winds this did not occur and so was shifted to the last race of the year. Mark’s idea is to include as many boats as possible as prize winners. No boat could win more than one prize. Trophy Winner - Public Bar Midway award - Windspeed Yacht closest to finish half way in the fleet. The NQR Award - Midnight Magic The yacht that missed first place by 5 mins The weight for Age Race – Bellablu The highest average age of crew and skipper - 73.85 years Mark’s Divisional winners Under 30 feet - Airwaves Under 35 feet - Tequila Over 35 feet - Primo Over 41 feet & Father Christmas Award - Musketeer. Apart from winning this Division, a boat that looks a lot like Mr Jacka’s, has appeared at the SYC Children’s party with a man dressed in red, for the last two years or so. Special Award This was awarded to a secondary student who was active on board a yacht in this race. I think he was navigator? Oldest Wednesday Wonder Skipper present. John Stenford who is ??? and was still sailing Amicus at the age 92 and that was a few years ago. He was dining with his wife and son.

Want to improve your success in racing? See what writing about your yacht can do for your results. Pizazz only wrote a short note last week and now has moved to first place in the series on 13 points. Send an article about your crew or Yacht to Mark. We should be able to supply the photo to go with your article. Thanks to Chris Furey who captured most yachts passing number 4 for the first time in race 11. It would be great to have your input for these reports, and you get to view a great action photo.

PLEASE send your story about your yacht, crew or whatever to Mark Windward

Page 10: Race 11 Comment - Sandringham Yacht Club · 2020. 9. 4. · WICKED (Mike Welsh) didn’t compete in races 9 and 10 but came back strongly in race 11 to be the fastest yacht around

Questions without Notice - race 11 Based on the evidence rounding the first mark, no 5: Are the bigger yachts taking a lead from the Australian Cricket team and starting up a contest with slightly different rules and calling it THE BIG BASH? Was the handicapper just checking to see if any one watching what he does by leaving his fenders hanging over the side? Are the new buoys really going to light at night? Can we have a disco if we are moored nearby? Will there be a fuel surcharge if the SYC duck has to go out before each race and put the buoys in place? If you actually fall over while racing does it count as a practice for MOB? It is worth practicing MOB given the number of non-voluntary episodes so far this season. Is there a close correlation between winning yachts and hull scrubs? It certainly seems like it. Was the wind (gusting 17~18) stronger than the predicted forecast, or should I have had a smaller sail? How many times has Fast Company won the fastest 1020? Is it because some of the other 1020’s are saving their best sails for Saturday? Is a 5-yacht tie for Start of the Day a record? Yachts 3540, 424, 451, 367, 340 were all on 2 seconds. The race management had to draw out of a hat to determine who was the winner of the free BLAIR hull scrub. Chequemate was the lucky winner. Will she have a clean bottom now for whoever buys her? She is up for sale. Ask Ian Whitbread.

Other WW matters Welcome back to Colin on Midnight Magic. First race back and they win a prize. Farewell to Martin and crew on board Bacardi. We wish them good sailing in the Sydney to Hobart, even if it is just so the rest of us can say we beat one of the best performing yachts in the Sydney to Hobart. It will Martin’s 29th Syd-Hobart. It is necessary for Mark to make mention of Scarlet Runner (being a Red Yacht) and also because there is at least one WW sailor on board in the Cape to Rio race starting in about 10 days. To keep informed visit CLICK . Be patient it takes a little while to load the site. It has to come a long way.

An Evaluation of the Handicapping There was a broad spread of different size yachts throughout the fleet in Race 11. After the first yacht passed the finish line at 15.46, by 15.56 ~ 34 yachts had finished. Just 3 boats were more than 10 mins later. In the series so far, the racing has had some very

close finishes, apart from the days of very strong winds. Answer to the Question from Race 10
