2016 Summer Olympics, commonly known as RIO
2016, is due to take place from August 5th to August 21st.
The opening ceremony will be witnessed at Maracana Stadium
in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on August 5th 2016. A record number of
countries are participating in a record number of sports. More
than 206 countries are scheduled to take part in about 306
events including rugby sevens and golf for the first time.
Along with olympic torch, the medals and the mascots, the
slogan plays a major role in creating the unique identity of each
Olympic game. "UM MUNDO NOVO" meaning 'A NEW WORLD"
is the motto of Rio 2016. The motto promotes the concepts of
transformation through sports and changing the world for
better.
Back in New Delhi, the dream goes on. India is sending its
largest ever contingent to Rio- 121 athletes in all, As usual, the
medal hopes are shooting, wrestling, boxing, archery and
men's hockey. The Indian sporting enthusiast whose
passion is second to none and whose patience is
wearing thin will hope it is indeed a brave NEW
WORLD that is awaiting the 121 who are flying
to Brazil.

President's Note
Our Birth Day is on 25th of this month. But we are celebrating the function on 30th of this month. Way back
in the year 1949 some Rotarians from Cochin under the leadership of late PDG S. Koder and late PDG Sunderesan
came to Alleppey with the idea of spreading the ideals of Rotary in this ancient town. They met some of the leaders of
different profession like late A.R. Sulaiman Sait the then Municipal Chairman of Alleppey late V.Kesavan Late K,C.
Karunakaran and others and thus "THE ROTARY CLUB OF ALLEPPEY' came into existence. There were 21 Charted
Members. But unfortunately none of them are with us today. On 25th July,1949 at a colourful function held in Leo XIII
H. School our club was charted as the 7339th club and the District No.56. The District 56 was comprised of Srilanka
(then Ceylon) part of Karnataka (then Mysore State) Tamil Nadu (then Madras State) Kerala (then Travancore and
Malabar),Karikal, Mahe and Puduserry (then Pondichery). In fact we have got a glorious past. Since inception we are
carrying out umpteen number of service projects in all the avenues of service of Rotary International, such as End
Polio, Financial assistance to the have-nots, distributing scholarship to the cleverest students, extending medical
care to the needy are only few of such services. We have sponsored 5 clubs in our Rotary District so far and they
include R.C. of Alleppey East (12-10-1974)R.C. of Mavilikkara (09-05-1976) R.C. of Sherthalai 01-08-1979) R,C. of
Haripad(01-06-1989) and R.C. of Alleppey North (29-07-2005). The eminent personalities who visited our club
includes Late Sanjeev Reddy, Rjagopalachary, V.V.Giri, Pattam A. Thanu Pillai.T.M.A. Pai. R. Sankar, P.T. Chacko and so
on. Thus we can be proved to be a member of The Rotary Club of Alleeppey and at the same time we have got a
responsibility to keep up our tradition. Rtn. George Thomas
THE FOUR-WAY TEST
Rotary International News
Paul P. Harris, an attorney, wanted to create a professional group with
the same friendly spirit he felt in the small towns of his youth. On 23 February
1905, Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram Shorey gathered at
Loehr’s office in Room 711 of the Unity Building in downtown Chicago. This was
the first Rotary club meeting. They decided to call the new club “Rotary” after
the practice of rotating meeting locations.
Within five years clubs had formed across the country, from San Francisco to
New York. In August 1910, Rotarians held their first convention in Chicago. The 16 clubs that existed at that time
united to form the National Association of Rotary Clubs. In 1912, the name changed to International Association of
Rotary Clubs to reflect the addition of clubs in other countries. The name Rotary International was adopted in 1922.
By July 1925, Rotary had grown to more than 2,000 clubs and an estimated 108,000 members on six continents.
Rotary’s reputation attracted presidents, prime ministers, and a host of other luminaries to its ranks — among them
author Thomas Mann, diplomat Carlos P. Romulo, and composer Jean Sibelius.
As Rotary grew, members pooled their resources and used their talents to serve their communities. The
organization's dedication to this ideal is best expressed in its motto: Service Above Self.
In 1932, Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor created The Four-Way Test. The test, which has been translated into more than
100 languages, asks the following questions:
Of the things we think, say or do
Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? Disclaimer: Views expressed by contributors are not necessarily those of the editor. Every effort is made that the bulletin content is accurate. Information published is in good faith and no liability
