DEAN’S MESSAGE
Greetings:
I hope you had very happy and joyful holiday and this
message finds you well. I wish you a very happy and
successful 2015.
Our students are back for the spring semester and clas-
ses are in full session. I especially welcome back the
fourth cohort of our honor students in Dr. Shoemaker’s
marketing class who spent the semester break in Spain
completing their class projects. Supporting students’
international trip is one of our commitments to the
honors program. I thank many of you who provided us
financial support for this activity.
As you know, we are in the process of a nationwide
search for the school’s next dean. I am pleased to inform you that the search commit-
tee selected three candidates for campus interviews where they will be meeting with
SBA faculty, staff, students, and alumni as well as other Widener University adminis-
trators. We are hoping that the new dean will be named shortly after these campus
visits are completed.
Ms. Joan Waters, Managing Director and Principle owner of Cofco will be the fea-
tured speaker at this year’s Awards Banquet to be held on March 26th 2015 at the Har-
rah’s Casino in Chester. Please look for invitations and more information in the near
future.
The entire Widener community in general and the SBA community in particular are
saddened by the sudden death of one our Professor Emeritus, Dr. Bernie J. Reilly. He
will be missed but not forgotten.
Our traditional holiday reception in December was again a great success. More than
one hundred alumni and friends joined us to renew their friendships and make new
ones. Many of the alumni who attended the event indicated that they will be happy to
participate in the school events as volunteers. As in the past we always need help in
many projects such as mentoring students, reaching out to admitted students, joining
panel discussions in academic workshops etc.. If you would like to participate in any
of these programs please let me know.
Best wishes.

Salamanca, Segovia and
Penafiel, students were able
to visit the very modern Re-
nault factory and drive a Twizy, an electric car. Tours of the bullfighting rings, the Real Madrid Soccer
Stadium, the Guijelo Ham Factory and the Prado Museum were highlights.

Another networking event at Widener SBA was a
huge success for students and faculty!
On November 12, Dr. Mary Shoemaker hosted over
100 students at Lathem Hall for her Pi Sigma Epsi-
lon Networking Event. This annual event yields job
opportunities for our students. Twenty five compa-
nies attended and participated in the “speed dating”
format. Troy Allgood served as the Master of Cere-

dents to various tables with the executives. Dr.

Epsilon Marketing fraternity and has helped ready
her students for the working world by always hav-

Michael Bennett From No.10 Football Named Second
Team Academic All-America
Tax Executives Institute Scholarship Award
Senior punter Michael Bennett (Maple Glen, PA), who has
enjoyed a solid career on and off the field, today garnered
a prestigious honor in being tabbed second team Capital
One CoSIDA Academic All-America.
Bennett becomes the 52nd Academic All-America in
school history, tops in the Middle Atlantic Conference,
and the seventh so honored from the football team. He is
the first since fellow punter Doug Schlack received first-
team honors in 2005. Bennett has proven to be a major
weapon with his punting, which led him to be tabbed Hon-
orable Mention All-MAC. He leads the MAC with 22
punts inside the 20 yard line, is seventh with a 32.3 yard
average per punt, and has placed seven punts inside the 10
yard line and four inside the six yard line.
He also had a six-game streak in which he placed at least two punts inside the 20 yard line each game entering last Saturday.
This included putting five punts inside the 20 yard line in Widener's 44-28 November 15 over Delaware Valley that clinched
the MAC title. Among Bennett's other highlights this season include averaging a season-best 39.0 yards per punt November 8
at King's. He also averaged 36.8 yards per punt September 20 vs. Albright that included a 50-yard punt.

Financial Literacy Workshop
Prof. Hargadon Prof. Lordi
Dean Ozatalay welcomed the students.
On Friday, November 7, 2014 the School of
Business Administration welcomed over
100 high school students, teachers and
counselors to attend our annual Financial
Literacy Workshop. This year in addition to
our faculty presentation, one of our alumni,
Cassandra Latsios, ‘12, from Smart Devine
spoke to the students about goal setting,
working a financial plan and managing
yourself to be successful. Cassandra was a
hard worker at the SBA and also talked
about her Co-Op experience and how that
helped her in her career.
Professors Lordi and Hargadon were able to
highlight what is important to high school
students and also illustrate what the key fi-
nancial literacy tools are. Everyone toured
the campus and then the students played
financial football in various breakout rooms
around the campus. Lunch is always a big
hit and then several schools toured the cam-
pus, remarking how nice it was.

Guest Speaker: Joan Waters
When Joan arrived at COFCO in 1988, it was clear that she had found the company that
was the perfect fit. The authenticity that emanated throughout the team made her feel at
home immediately. She brought with her invaluable industry experience, a high level of
professionalism and a passion for a relationship centric approach to the business.
Joan believes “at the core of what we do, is finding the right combination to get the right
things done for our clients, every time.” And it is through Joan’s strong leadership that
clients experience this every time they work with COFCO.
Joan attended college at Bryant University in Smithfield, RI, where she was a member
of the women’s basketball program. She remains an active supporter of and advocate for
women’s athletics.
Joan is a board member of AWE (Alliance of Women Entrepreneurs), the mid‐Atlantic
region’s largest organization dedicated to fostering high growth businesses founded or
led by women.
She also serves as an advisory board member for the School of Business Administration
at Widener University, and is also a member of Impact100 Philadelphia, a women’s
philanthropic organization that funds initiatives in the Greater Philadelphia region. Joan
dedicates much of her time to the fight against cancer and raising money to help find a
cure for this disease.
COFCO is currently transitioning leadership to Joan Waters, who has partnered with Chairman of the Board, Alan Einstein, in lead-
ing the organization over the last decade. Joan’s experience and passion for the business and her commitment to hiring the best peo-
ple to support our clients will carry forth seamlessly as she becomes the next generation owner. Joan champions a new corporate vi-
sion which honors COFCO’s longstanding traditions and legacy and embraces the future and the dramatic changes that will occur in
the way people work.
