What a fabulous week this has been. The children have now
settled into their routines and have been so excited about their
learning. In Year 3 the classrooms have been transformed to
scenes under the sea to help with their theme of 'Into the Deep'.
In Year 2 each morning the children walk through 'Bootham Bar'
to enter their classrooms following their theme of 'Let's Conquer
York'. Year 1 have found a caterpillar and built bug dens in their
classrooms as part of their theme of 'Flutter and Crawl’ and
Reception, have been building and washing cars in their ‘car
wash’ for their topic of ’Terrific Transport’! Its going to be a
very exciting term ahead!
It has been wonderful meeting so many parents this week at the
Year Group Information Evenings. They have provided a chance
for you to hear about the learning opportunities that lie ahead
for your child/children. My sincere thanks to all of the staff for
preparing such excellent presentations. There are many more
parent events ahead in this term to enhance the partnership
between home and school. In the calendar we have two
presentations on the theme 'Helping Your child to be Happy at
Home and School' led by Family Matters in York. It is an
aspiration of St Peter’s (3-18) to actively promote positive
mental health, wellbeing and happiness in the school community
this year. Further events are planned for later in the year. Today
the Year 3 parents will have received an email giving details of a
forthcoming presentation at St Olave’s by Family Matters,
‘Letting go – Developing your child’s independence’. This is
aimed at parents of Y3 children at Clifton and J1-J5 at St Olave's.
It would be great to see as many of you at these events. You will
notice that we are trialling our new reply system, we hope it
proves to be more efficient for you and for us! Also, at the end
of the newsletter is the programme of Public Lectures for the
term. All parents and friends of the school are more than
welcome to attend.
Today is Character Day, more details can be found at the
following link - http://www.letitripple.org/character_day_2015. In
our Celebration Assemblies on a Friday, it is always lovely to
award 'Good Conduct Awards' for children who have displayed
a great character in school following our School Values. We try
and promote good character with the children every day at
school.
Many thanks for all your donations for Clothing for Calais. These
will be added to donations made by St Olave's and St Peter's
parents. Also this week we received a wonderful letter from the
Head teacher of Bumboi Primary School in Uganda. Last year,
motivated by Kobe who is in Year 1 (and Huxley now in Y3) we
collected books for a school in Uganda. Over the summer Kobe, Huxley and their family took them to
Uganda (pictures were in last weeks' newsletter). Thank you to everyone for all your support. Thank you
also, to Kobe and Huxley’s Grandma who came into school to give us a wonderful presentation earlier in
the week.
You will have noticed in the Calendar that the Parent Consultation Evenings will be before half term this
year. This will give you an opportunity to discuss how your child has settled into the new school year. A
report will be sent out at the end of term as normal. Lists to sign up for these evenings will be available at
the reception desk from next Wednesday morning (Nursery lists in the Nursery!).
Today is the start of the Rugby World Cup and I am looking forward to watching it - as I am sure you are!
In conjunction with this event, next week we will be taking part in ‘PowerPass’ - a charity event for all IAPS
schools in the country. Details can be found further in the newsletter.
Next Saturday, 26th September, will be the first of our Open Mornings for prospective parents. Please
pass on this information to any of your family and friends who may be interested in coming along. They can
register their details on our website http://www.stpetersyork.org.uk/clifton/admissions/visiting_us/

We have had great fun hunting for numbers this week. We talked about why cars have number plates, and noticed that all of the cars number plates were different though the same at the front and back. We noticed that the number 4 and 9 looked a little different to the ones on our numberline. Once we were back in the classroom, we
compared the amounts of each number spotted, and used the vocabulary of most, more, fewer and least to describe them.
Reception started the week off throwing and catching the colourful
scarves in PE. The way the scarves float slowly to the ground make
them a wonderful piece of equipment to aid catching skills with our
youngest pupils. They are also great fun!
RS Baking Blog
Our first time baking in RS, we decided to make some simple biscuits. We
looked at different ways of measuring ingredients using a balancing scales and
cup measures. We spoke about health and safety when baking; we made
suggestions about how to keep safe in the kitchen; washing our hands before
we begin, using equipment safely and being cautious around the oven. When we
had made our sweet pastry, we divided it into
equal sized pieces by rolling small balls in an
anti-clockwise motion. We undercooked one batch of biscuits, over cooked
another and the rest were just right! At circle time we looked closely at the
different biscuits; the overcooked were extra brown, and the under cooked were
still soft, but the rest of the biscuits were nice and golden. We sampled the
biscuits that were just right and they tasted great! What will we bake next?!
In 2H we have been learning about
the Romans in York and preparing for
our exciting trip to York Minster on
Thursday! We have started
researching the Minster and have
looked closely at the stained glass,
carefully copying chosen windows in
watercolour.
This week in 3L our classroom
sunk! We have gone under the
sea for our topic ‘The Deep’.
The children have been
learning how to locate
continents and oceans from
an atlas and
recording these on
their own maps.
Super work!
We have been
continuing to explore
different areas of the
classroom in Nursery
this week. The children
collected some leaves at
Forest School and we used these
to print with onto a canvas.
Later in the week we used other
objects to print with-
including our hands.
Whilst printing we have
also been learning how
to help each other when
we put our overalls on. Lots of
great
messy
fun!
CHARITY NEWS
This year Clifton will be raising money for Walking With The Wounded, a charity that supports our wounded veterans to rebuild their lives and to re-train .The veterans are incredible role models who demonstrate courage, endurance and positivity in the face of adversity. These are all values which are important to us at Clifton.
The charity, which has Prince Harry as its patron, has already completed expeditions to The North Pole in 2011, The South Pole in 2013 and Mount Everest in 2012. This year Walking With The Wounded are taking on The Walk of Britain. The 1000 mile walk being undertaken by six veterans began on 22nd August in
Scotland and will finish at Buckingham Palace on 1st November. Last Thursday the veterans arrived at the Minster and some Year 3 children were there to meet them. They asked them lots of questions about the challenges the walkers have faced and talked about some of the ways that we could raise some money for them this year. The School Council will be busy organising some fun events to raise money. Watch this space!

This week 3C have been using their imaginations!
We received a letter from Dougal, the deep sea diver, inviting us to join him on his deep sea adventure.
We imagined what it would be like under the sea!
Take a look at what we thought. We planned our ideas carefully before creating collages of our underwater worlds!

It has been an exciting week for 3R as we have been receiving messages in a bottle from Dougal the Deep-Sea diver and our classroom has gone under the sea! We have been learning about the oceans of the world and about coordinates so that we can find where Dougal is in the world! On Wednesday we decided to write some
messages to send back to Dougal. We are very excited to see what he is going to send us next...
On Thursday afternoon Year One split into two groups – the Caterpillars and the Butterflies! The Caterpillars went mini-beast hunting in Forest Schools and the Butterflies stayed in school and decorated Butterfly cupcakes! A great afternoon had by all and we can't wait to swap activities next week!

2S had a wonderful time on Thursday
morning. They walked down Bootham,
through Bootham Bar (the real one) and
went to St William’s College to visit the
York Minster Learning Centre. They spent
the morning having a guided tour of the
Minster, finding out about its history and
doing some great jig-saw puzzle activities.
The children really impressed the tour
guides with their historical knowledge!
