Thank you I hope you had a nice break. My family went camping at a state park. My thirteen-year-old daughter came along with the goal of catching her first fish. She had a new fishing pole and a few fishing lures (I had purchased for her), to achieve her goal. After the first day the fish had successfully eluded her. I sat and watched her fish (being close by for safety) but preferring to read or just be a spectator. My older brother stopped by our camp for a visit. He is retired and loves to fish. Upon his arrival, he gathered his fishing gear from his truck (along with my daughter) and off they went to the lake. I grabbed a chair and went along to spectate. As he readied her line with all new gear, another child showed up with a fishing pole (minus the hook). When my brother finished my daughter’s line, he went to work on the child’s line that joined us. Within fifteen minutes, he was working on the fishing lines and poles of two additional children who had come with broken lines and missing hooks. When the kids (three of which I did not know) were all fishing (and out of ear shot), I apologized to my brother. “I know you didn’t drive over here to run a community fishing program”, I said. He responded by simply saying, “If more kids were fishing there would be fewer kids in trouble”. I had heard similar statements applied to sports, hunting, and dozens of other things. I learned that day that it really has nothing to do with the activity of the child. It is the activity of the adult that really makes a difference. The activities that are really meaningful to children are the ones where parents and other adults are actively involved. I was missing an opportunity to mentor my child by limiting my involvement to safety monitoring. When my daughter caught her first fish, I was there (not sitting and reading but with a fishing pole in my hands). I was there to smile with her and photograph the moment. But the real “catch of the day” was the memory that we created together. I guess my older brother is still teaching me how to fish and do a few other things! LUNCH WITH YOUR CHILD

Parents—your child must have a note if they want to eat in the

atrium with an adult other than the guardian or parent. Thank you

I hope you had a nice break. My family went camping at a state park. My thirteen-year-old daughter came along with the goal of catching her first fish. She had a new fishing pole and a few fishing lures (I had purchased for her), to

achieve her goal. After the first day the fish had successfully eluded her. I sat and watched her fish (being close by for safety) but preferring to read or just be a spectator. My older brother stopped by our camp for a visit. He is retired

and loves to fish. Upon his arrival, he gathered his fishing gear from his truck (along with my daughter) and off they went to the lake. I grabbed a chair and went along to spectate. child’s line that joined us. Within fifteen minutes, he was working on the fishing lines and poles of two additional children who had come with broken lines and missing hooks. When the kids (three of which I did not know) were all

fishing (and out of ear shot), I apologized to my brother. “I know you didn’t drive over here to run a community fishing program”, I said. He responded by simply saying, “If more kids were fishing there would be fewer kids in trouble”.

3rd GRADE NEWS MSS This month in Math, we will be concluding our unit

on area and perimeter. The students have been

working diligently on both of these skills and their

hard work is showing. Next, we will move into our

unit on fractions. Fractions can seem difficult at first

but there are many ways you can help your child at

home with simply daily activities. Fractions can be

found almost anywhere in your daily life. Food is a

great example of how you can easily help your child

with fractions. A pizza, carton of eggs, sandwiches or

fruit can be used to discuss and learn more about

fractions with your child.

In social studies, we will soon be starting our unit on

government. To culminate the government unit, stu-

dents will be able to participate in a field trip to the

Louisiana State Museum and the New State Capital

at the end of March.

ELA In reading, we are finishing up Unit 3 Book Clubs. Our students really enjoyed our Read Aloud novel, Because of Winn-Dixie. On March 2, we will celebrate Read Across America Day where the students will participate in activities that will incorporate the novel, Because of Winn-Dixie. In March, we will begin our poetry unit. The students will be analyzing and writing poetry. In writing, we are gearing up for writing our opinions on many different topics. The third grade teachers would like to thank all of our parents for your continued support in your child’s education.

In reading, our little historians are wrapping up unit three in Reader’s Workshop. They have been conducting research on famous Civil Rights leaders such as; Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges, Harriet Tubman, Nelson Mandela, and Abraham Lincoln. The students found information on several different sub topic areas, examined primary and secondary resources, taught the class about their leader, and even held a classroom debate. Soon we will be moving into our third writing unit and focusing on the American Revolution as we “Bring History to Life” in our informative writing. Please continue to encourage your child to read each night and continue to fill out their reading log daily. Thank you for your continued support! March is all about fractions in math! Students will be

converting improper fractions to mixed numbers

along with both adding and subtracting mixed

numbers. Later in the month, students will begin

multiplying fractions by whole numbers using

models and repeated addition formulas. Please

continue to work on fractions, multiplication, and

division facts at home!

Fourth graders are being electrified in the spring

with our unit on energy. Students will describe

different forms of energy. We will be traveling with

the current through heat, light, electricity, and

sound. We will also study in social

studies: innovations and change with immigration,

inventions, and civil rights. Students will

investigate causes of mass immigration and

inventions that shaped the immigration patterns

across the landscape. Students will discuss how

immigration patterns impacted the culture of the

United States. Happy Spring!
