“A Movie in

Need of a Title” By George Quinlan, Jr.

George A. Quinlan, Sr.

1922-2013

His generation has been dubbed “The Greatest Generation” and in the world of Music, he and his peers did their part to earn that recognition. So, I began to think...if they made a movie of my dad’s life, what would be the title?

“Young Man with a Horn”

While this movie was the Bix Beider-becke story, the title really is appropriate for the early years of his life. Like many WWII vets, he earned his stripes in a military band and earned Music Educa-tion degrees from DePaul University thanks to the GI Bill. During the 50’s and 60’s, all music was live music and hundreds of these “cats” made their live-lihood performing. Many of his band-mates like Andy Marchese and Leo

Henning taught all day and played all night! The legendary Chez Paree was his gig where he performed regularly with stars like Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis,

and Pearl Bailey.

“The Music Man” This one seems too easy. Meredith Wil-son’s main character “Professor” Harold Hill, is actually a con man in the story.

His scam is to sell all the instruments and leave town without forming the promised band. Quinlan, and his partner Fabish and co-horts like Leo Henning

& Frank Manna did the opposite. While there may have been “trouble” in River City, they created mu-sic programs built to last.

“Father Knows Best”

While technically not a movie, this sit-com featured Robert Young as the father of a family full of Baby-boomers...just like ours. Schools were bursting at the seams (our classroom had 50 students with one teacher...of course, a nun.) and school music was growing quickly. While many family music stores shifted

their focus to guitars and drums after the Beatles iconic appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show...not Q&F. He stayed the course on what he knew best-school music. A navigation plan that has withstood over five decades.

“The Bucket List” While I don’t think he actually had a bucket list, his desire to explore new places, learn new things, and meet new people never stopped. He became a pilot around the age of 45. He served as chairman of a local bank. He travelled abroad often including China just a few years ago. And, really, how many 90

year-olds do you know who own Ipads

and are Lifetime Fitness regulars? During the final few years of his life he continued travelling (Costa Rica, Florida, Las Vegas, San

Antonio for NASMD conference in March, The Kentucky Derby one week before his passing). At 2012 Midwest Clinic, he was invited by Dr. Charles

Menghini to be a guest conductor for the VanderCook College band, while his namesake grandson played the field drum.

“Love Story”

To really summarize 90 years of his life, we must realize that the movie is actu-ally a love story. A story about a man who loved music, loved teaching kids, loved working in the music indus-try, loved to travel, loved the folks who worked at QF, loved the teachers we serve, loved his family, and is now united with his one true love, Sweet Lorraine.

CSO has a concert at 1:30 that day. So, after a nice lunch, you can catch the con-cert and still get home ahead of the after-noon traffic.

Think of the day you would have had. Maybe you couldn’t get to one of the music teacher summer workshops this year. But, you will have touched your hand to the third rail for this event. Often, that little jolt can do more than one ex-pects and give you more verve for next year. I know, together, we can make this happen and will have a worthwhile life-time experience. How fantastic it is to live in Chicagoland. I mean really – let’s just do it right.

I cannot let this moment pass without expressing my sympathy and apprecia-tion to the Quinlan family. I am so proud and appreciative to have had the opportu-nity to have known both Lorraine and

George Quinlan, Sr. and to be welcome among their family. Time and time again, Mr. Quinlan has proven himself to be a friend of music education. He cared deeply about the success of all music students and wanted to make their experi-ence positive. While working with him, I had many wonderful conversations. When we talked, it was like two veteran music teachers telling stories about our former students and strategies we used to get a performance ready. His passion was strong and will live on forever in us all. I know it will within me. I’ll never forget the look in his eyes when, after placing me in his new Cadillac passenger seat, he hit the gas and swoosh-off-we-went-zip-fast. When he hit the accelera-tor my eyes went as wide open as they could. He calmly looked at me and said with a huge smile, “Didn’t know I had it in me, did ya?” We laughed and drove onward. As I say everyday I go to work, THANK YOU, MR. QUINLAN!

Lloyd Palmiter, our String Specialist, brings extensive knowledge to our company stemming from his twenty years experience teaching orchestra and

cello, serving as clinician and consultant for musical instrument and educational

organizations, and countless hours of working with students and parents to assist in

selecting the best instrument for their needs. He visits all store locations regularly

and is available by appointment to individually help you and your students find just

the right instrument. You’ll see Lloyd at conferences of IMEA, MENC, ASTA, Vio-

lin Society of America, and at the International Exhibition of violinmakers in Cre-

mona, Italy, where he will be scouting to bring you the best quality instruments

available from all over the world! Travels to the countries of origin and hand select-

ing the instruments and bows to be included in our showrooms make our instruments

among the best available today. We maintain a vigilant effort to assure our customers that Quinlan and Fabish Strings are always known for their

value and quality.

Q&FQ&FQ&FQ&F

Rise and Shine Orchestra! I know it’s early, but rise and shine! Get up and get out of bed. Rehearsal starts at 9:00AM and it is downtown Chicago. The concert is at 10:00AM so you need to be dressed and ready for a public performance. No special uniform for this concert, but dress so you can play comfortably yet look nice for the crowd that gathers to hear the performance at the Daley Plaza downtown. If it rains, the concert will be indoors. Otherwise, it will be an outdoor concert (bring music stands and clothespins!). Did I say the concert is at 10:00AM and the rehearsal is at 9:00? Imagine, only one rehearsal for a concert at the Daley Plaza. YOU ARE NEEDED!!!

There is something else to bring too. Bring a former student or two, or three, or…. That is the reason for the concert. A chance for people who used to play to join in for a quick rehearsal and concert on the Solstice is the sole purpose of the day of concerts. (It is VERY helpful is everyone registers, see below. I have to have music for everyone and enough original parts – no copied parts allowed – I work for a music store after all)

Along with Sousapalooza and the Broad-

way and Opera Sing-Along, the Rise and

Shine Orchestra is part of Play the Plaza

at the third annual Make Music Chicago, a daylong citywide celebration presented by Rush Hour Concerts. Make Music Chicago joins a network of hundreds of other cities around the world offering a day of free mu-sic to their communities. This is the first year the orchestra has been asked to play. So, it is REALLY important that you are there. I’m counting on you as is the entire CHICAGOLAND COMMU-NITY counting on you. Yes, YOU (including our friends in Indiana and Michi-gan too), so be there. Check out the web page and SIGN UP: www.makemusicchicago.com/rise-and-shine-orchestra/

You won’t be alone. There will be others there to perform with you who have already agreed to rise

and shine early that day. Along with other CSO members, Brant Taylor has agreed to perform the Vivaldi Double Cello Con-certo with me for this concert, just like our performance in 2004 at the Midwest Clinic. In fact, that is why I was asked to conduct, as Kelly Jocius (formerly of the Midwest Clinic) is now Executive Direc-tor of Rush Hour Concerts. (by the way...be sure to enjoy these free concerts all summer long as well at St. James Ca-thedral downtown). Along with the Vivaldi, we will mostly featuring music arranged by Merle Isaac – can you get more Chicago public school orchestra than that?!

I intend to pay tribute to public school orchestra teachers throughout the program. Let us be fully represented in all voices at all levels. We squeeze blood out of turnips all the time –and, on the 21st - from the first moment of rehearsal – we will be in public – I’ll be counting on your “get-er-done” attitude and experience to make it all unfold like nothing anyone has ever seen. It’s a blink your eyes- how did this happen moment. Just like you all do all the time everyday – no muss, no fuss, WE DID IT!

We need meat on our bones that day in the Daley. I’m working on some of the same media outlets we had access to for Silver Strings. If that connects, as I hope it will, we will be noticed. Barbara Queen (one of our Silver String violinists – and wife of CSO Violinist, Blair Milton, and a per-sonal trainer to the stars) is working on this for us.

Dan Hough is our percussion specialist in Ft Wayne. A former percussionist and drum major with The Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps, he often consults with various high school bands and conducts Drum Major workshops. Dan specializes helping directors make wise choices for the percussion needs...and golf!

Summer is almost here, and another school year is wrapping up! Summer means a LOT of different things for the music education world. Vacations, Sum-mer Band, Parades, Summer School, Band Camp, Drum Corps Shows, and of

course hopefully some golf! Keeping with the percussion theme, equipment is always on the to-do list. Fix this, adjust that, replace that… Often times I’m asked what the Life Expectancy of a Marching Drum Line is. “How Long until I have to re-place my marching drums?” On average, figure about ten seasons. This means if you are marching a Fall AND Winter season, 5 to 7 years can be ex-pected. Regardless of the instrument, you can only effectively repair an instru-ment for a certain period of time & use. There comes a time when nickel & diming an instrument with continual re-pair, is no longer cost effective. Ulti-mately repalcing can be the more valu-able investment. In reagrds to budgeting, and wth the afformentioned time frame in mind, remember drum heads too! I’ve been quoted “Just because the drum head

isn’t broken, does not mean is doesn’t need replacing!” Drum heads loose their elasticity after a while, and there-fore the effectiveness of tuning goes out the window. Students playing on inferior sounding instruments tend to loose interest. Your investment far outreaches the instrument and the box it was unpacked from.

Quinlan & Fabish’ Very Own, Aaron Black (Ft. Wayne), was awarded the Gold Medal for placing 1st in last month’s North

American Brass Band

Associations National Competition in Cincinnati, OH. Not only did traditional Brass Bands com-pete, from all over the country, there were also Solo & Ensemble competi-tors. I personally wit-nessed Aarons snare solo a number of times, as his lunch breaks were con-sumed with it. It was truly an out-standing solo! Cheers!

Product Spotlight: Evans Drum Heads recently introduced their new “360”

Technology. It’s a process of pre-seating the head, which makes it ready to tune and play without the “settling” period you normally have to wait through.

“Introducing Level 360 — the revolution-

ary new drumhead technology that's stak-

ing a claim for the freedom of drummers

everywhere. Freedom to spend more time

playing not tuning, jamming not cram-

ming, and expressing themselves with

tonal range like never before. From here

on out, Evans drumheads will be leading

the charge across the board into a new

era of innovation & superior perform-

ance all-around — 360 degrees to be

exact.” This technology has been im-planted on all new heads. Look for the new Red Packaging the next time you order Evans heads!

It’s the end of the school year and marching season is just around the cor-ner. With so many new and awesome titles, everyone’s marching show is guar-anteed to be a hit! Hal Leonard is start-ing their marching music off right.

Pixar Favorites will be a sure hit with both students and audiences a like. Stu-dents will recognize that music from the movies they grew up with, including themes from “Cars”, “Toy Story”, “Monsters, Inc.”,

“Ratatouille”, “Up”, and “A Bug’s Life”. This is a fast paced piece meant to keep audiences and band members a show to remember. Themes composed by Randy Newman and Michael Giacchino, and arranged for marching band by Michael Brown and Will Rapp. The Hal Leonard Stadium Jams legacy is also continuing this year with Stadium

Jams, Volume 8 – Michael Jackson, ar-ranged for marching band by Jay Bocook. This piece fea-tures shortened versions of “Thriller”, “Billie Jean”, “Beat It”, and “Bad”. Mi-chael Jackson was able to create some of the best rock grooves of all time and these themes will be recognizable to anyone. Sure to keep fans tapping their feet in the stands! Also available now from Hal Leonard is the complete marching show How to

Train Your Dragon, with 3 parts. All music composed by John Powell and arranged for marching band by Michael Brown and Will Rapp. Part 1 is a great intro into the rest of the marching show start-ing with a Celtic flair. This is a fast paced and driven opening sure to captivate all that hear. Part 2 open with themes from “Dragon Battle” and slows

into “This is Berk”. Meant to be a change of pace and give dynamic feel to the whole show. Part 3 returns to the powerful driven feel featuring the main themes from the motion picture. The arrangers also included a bit of Scottish style drumming for some extra flair. This show is sure to be a crowd pleaser! This marching season Alfred is coming back with a true oldie-but-goodie. The theme from Ghostbusters is easily recognizable to anyone who grew up in the 80’s or earlier, but is readily shared throughout all generations. With a pop/rock feel this is a per-fect addition to any field show. The original music was written by Ray Parker, Jr and arranged for marching band by Doug Adams. Adams was able to arrange this piece in such a way that is appropriate in many settings including marching band, pep band, or in the stands. Alfred is also debuting some very modern marching band arrangements this year, including Die

Young recorded by Ke$ha. Music and lyrics originally written by Nate Ruess, Benny Blanco, Lukasz Gottwald, Kesha Sebert, and Henry Walter, the marching band arrangement by Nick Baratta is sure to please stu-dents and audiences. This piece is a party in itself meant to get the audience involved and moving. This will be a great arrangement to any fun filled show you put on with your students. On the heels of the latest James Bond movie, Alfred has come out with a marching show The Music of James

Bond in three parts. The original

theme was composed by Monty Norman and all three parts of the show are arranged by Victor Lopez and Anthony Falcone. This show is a “James Bond through the years” type of show featuring some of the most popular themes. These themes include “James Bond Theme”, “For Your Eyes Only”, “Goldfinger”, “Die Another Day”, “Live and Let Die”, and ends with “James Bond Theme”. This show is sure to en-tertain as it wraps listeners in the world of spies and mystery.
