As human beings, it is our nature to be curious, to discover the undis-covered, to experience new experi-ences.

As we grow older, we tend to as-sociate the word “adventure” with far off places and exhilarating excursions. Sometimes, how-ever, the most intriguing voyages are the ones that begin right in our own backyards.

Spanning several counties and more than two dozen cities and villages, the communities that make up southwest Michigan and northern Indi-ana — affectionately known as Michiana — are as diverse as the people who populate them.

The region is rich in agriculture, enjoying four full seasons, but offers a mix or urban life as well.

On the shores of Lake Michigan, Berrien County boasts beautiful lakeside towns. Cass County’s rural grounds are home to numerous farms and historical landmarks. More than 500 workers travel across the state line each day to St. Joseph County, Indiana’s ever-growing industrial belt.

Though unified by their regional title, Michi-ana communities differ from town to town. For example, just miles northeast of tourist hotspot New Buffalo, a handful of quaint villages like Sawyer and Union Pier offer lakeside residenc-es in less metropolitan environments. Similarly, just miles north of South Bend — a booming metropolitan community put on the map by the University of Notre Dame — several small com-munities such as Niles, Buchanan and Dowa-giac house more rural residences containing a higher number of families.

In addition to St. Joseph, South Bend and New Buffalo, the largest cities in Michiana include Mishawaka and Granger in Indiana and Niles and Benton Harbor in Michigan. Though there is some discrepancy regarding where Michiana begins and ends, most tend to agree that the core of the region contains three counties: Berrien and Cass in Michigan, and St. Joseph in Indiana.

Due to the enormity of the region, political issues in Michiana communities are handled at the local level in city/village, township and county government. The majority of cities in Michiana are represented by chambers of com-merce, organizations that represent existing businesses and work to attract new businesses to their respective communities.

This magazine will serve as a guidebook to help those who have lived here their whole lives explore the region and let first-time visitors see what they have been missing.

So get ready. Everyone can find something to enjoy if you Explore Michiana.

History is important, as it is impos-sible to see exactly where you are going if you don’t know where you came from.

Because of the bodies of water in Michiana, the area has played a big role in many of the country’s most pivotal mo-ments.

Earliest records of Michiana — long be-fore the title was designated — show that some of the first inhabitants of the area were those belonging to Native American tribes such as the Potawatomi, who built villages along the St. Joseph River.

In the late 1600s, as Europeans were ex-ploring what is now the United States, they set up forts and camps along the same river that the natives had survived on for

centuries. Forts such as Fort St. Joseph in present-day Niles, Michigan were used heavily to house Jesuit missionaries and militia in the Spanish-American and Revo-lutionary Wars.

In the 1800s, settlers began to make their way to the Michiana area, and the region prospered following the opening of the Joseph Bertrand Trading Post in present-day St. Joseph, Michigan.

Farther south, in South Bend, the Ameri-can Fur Company was instated, drawing settlers from all over the colonial United States to what is now St. Joseph County Indiana.

Fertile farmlands drew settlers from Ohio and southern Indiana to present-day Cass County, Michigan when settlers were in-

formed of the open prairie and agricultural success of the area.

As time progressed, some Michiana communities began to place more em-phasis on industrial possibilities, building factories and other institutions to draw more settlers, create more jobs and pro-vide residents with the goods necessary to survive.

Later on, many communities in Michiana would serve as stops on the Underground Railroad, passing escaped slaves from the south through buried tunnels into freedom.

Those who call Michiana communities their home remain extremely proud of their heritage and are happy to share the past that has laid the foundation for the present and an even brighter future.

Extending from the shores of Lake Michi-gan to the campus of one of the most well known universities in the country, Michiana is by no means lacking in

recreational opportunities. In many cases, these opportunities are what have put the communities in Michiana on the metaphorical map, drawing people from all over the country to experience the activities for themselves.

During any of its four seasons, visitors have no trouble finding activities to fit their liking — whether they prefer splashing around in Lake Michigan, perusing antique stores in Harbor Country or sledding in one of Cass County’s parks. Michiana is home to hundreds of rec-reational venues, including beaches, shops, restaurants, breweries, wineries, sports parks, theaters, museums, farms and much more.

Each community in Michiana contains its

own recreational niche. For example, New Buffalo offers several outdoor activities — swimming, kayaking, hiking, etc. — due to its location on Lake Michigan. Dowagiac, located farther east, offers a variety of activities for those who enjoy the fine arts — live theater, music, visual arts, etc.

In addition to the seasonal activities offered based on the weather, each community in Michiana offers a number of fun opportunities year-round. Mishawaka is home to one of the largest shopping malls in the area, and the Acorn Theater in Three Oaks features con-certs and shows in every genre throughout the year.

Each community offers a number of festivals and events throughout all times of the year, drawing thousands of tourists to celebrate with the people who call Michiana home.

Michiana is home to more than 20 public schools, at least a dozen private schools, six community colleges, three

private colleges and a major university. Students can choose between a number of paths at every stage of their educa-tion — from kindergarten to college — without ever leaving the area.

At the grade school level, children are automatically considered students at the district to which they reside, but may make the decision with their parents to attend any school in the state they live in, thanks to the area’s school of choice opportunity. Students who live in Indiana but wish to attend school in Michigan (or vice versa) may also choose to do so by paying tuition to his or her school of choice, as they would a private school. Students interested in alternative methods of education can also opt to attend one of the area’s several private schools.

In the past several years, a growing number of Michiana students are gradu-ating with not only their high school diploma, but also associate’s degrees or credits earned toward a bachelor’s degree. Students are given the opportu-nity to be dual-enrolled at multiple high schools or colleges through Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses, the Early College Academies at Lake Michigan College and Southwestern

Michigan College or Andrews Univer-sity’s Math and Science Center, to name a few.

Students can also continue their education after high school by attending any number of colleges and universi-ties in the Michiana area. Schools range in size from technical colleges like ITT Technical Institute in South Bend to large universities like the University of Notre Dame.

Students can begin their post-sec-ondary education at any of the area’s community colleges — Southwestern Michigan College, Lake Michigan Col-lege or Ivy Tech — and transfer to a four-year college. Students can even earn a bachelor’s degree without ever leaving the community college campus.

Michiana also offers a number of four-year colleges of universities that draw students from all over the world, including the University of Notre Dame, Andrews University, Bethel College, St. Mary’s College, Holy Cross College, Indiana University South Bend and Dav-enport University.

Colleges of all types offer on-campus living, meal plans, part- or full-time edu-cation, online courses, extracurricular activities, athletics and a large variety of programs and courses.

More information on schools in the Mi-chiana area can be found at the schools’ respective websites (See sidebar).

F irst settled in 1856, Bridgman owed its early growth to the logging industry and the construction of a railroad depot. The town’s growth was augmented by a location in the heart

of Berrien County’s rich agricultural zone, and that legacy contin-ues with a variety of u-pick orchards and wineries.

Weko Beach’s unique boardwalk structure allows visitors to eas-ily climb the dunes above the park, providing an excellent view of the sunset over Lake Michigan. You talk about many things with your loved ones: from day-to-day details to big events. Sharing stories with those who matter most isn’t just important today; it will be especially significant when it’s time to honor and commemorate your lives.

Memorialization at the end of life is more than it used to be. It can reflect a person’s life story and be trans-formative, healing and comforting.

Meaningful memorialization starts when loved ones talk about what matters most: memories made, les-sons learned and how they hope to be remembered.

DID YOU KNOW?• Coloma is actually the third name given to the city. It was originally called Shingle Dig-gins, after the wood shingles that were manufactured in the area. It was eventually renamed Dickerville after the timber ran out, forcing the citizens to barter and “dicker” for items. In 1855, resident Stephen R. Gilson eventually suggested the name “Co-loma,” the name of a town in California where he had stayed during the gold rush era.• Watervliet, on the other hand, has only had two names in its history. It was originally named “Waterford” by resi-dents because of the flowing waters of the neighboring Paw Paw River. In 1849, when it came time to establish a post office in the city, officials discovered that another village had already claimed “Water-ford.” They decided to rename

themselves to Watervliet, which is Dutch for “flowing waters.”• Built in 1910, the Watervliet Paper Company served as the backbone of the city’s economy for years, producing magazine covers, can labels, playing cards, stamps and more. The mill shut down in the mid-1990s, and was torn down in 2001.• The Watervliet/Coloma area hosted a number of big names in the big band era of the 1930s and 40s, such as Perry Como and Doris Day. Crystal Palace was a popular venue along the Paw Paw River, before it was destroyed in a fire in 1965.• The Paw Paw River was named by the Native Ameri-cans who lived in region, after the paw paw fruit that grew along its banks. The area is one of the oldest areas of commercial fruit farming in Michigan.

DID YOU KNOW...• The name “Dowagiac” is derived from the Potawatomi word “Ndowagayuk,” which has been interpreted in several different ways. One is foraging ground for the region’s abun-dant natural resources. Another is “fishing water,” referring to the river and creeks crossing the land.• Dowagiac became famous for its Round Oak Stoves. Philo D. Beckwith started the company in 1871. While the stoves them-selves are a highly sought after item, perhaps Beckwith’s most important contribution to Dowa-giac was his support for the fine

arts. The city continues to honor the arts more than a century after his death, with its exten-sive collection of public art and events like the Dogwood Fine Arts Festival.• Dowagiac is also the home-town of a number of prominent Americans, including Tony Award winning actress Judith Ivy, Pulitzer Prize nominated journalist Webb Miller and Olympic bronze medalist Chris Taylor.• Dowagiac is home to Michigan’s oldest lumberyard, Judd Lumber. The company celebrated its 155th anniver-sary in April. The business has remained in the Judd family for four generations.

• Another longstanding Dowa-giac institution is Southwestern Michigan College. Located near the outskirts of the city, the community college has pro-vided two-year degrees to stu-dents since 1966. The school’s chairman, Fred Mathews, is the

longest serving college board chair in the U.S., serving as chair throughout the school’s 50-year history.

Our favorite placesWe love the nature sanctu-ary, at Dowagiac Woods. There are four different sets of trails there. One trail takes us nearly four or five hours to walk.”

— Carl Green Mimi Sarducci’s down the road, on Front Street, has the best pizza I’ve ever eaten.”

—Tim Toner

The Dowagiac Fine Arts Festival always brings a lot of people into town. Dowa-giac has so many things to offer that time of year, with the sculp-tures, the artwork inside the stores and all the artists they bring out to the college.”

DOWAGIAC/SISTER LAKES

• Sister Lakes is named, naturally, after the numer-ous lakes surrounding the area. More specifically, it derived the name after a post office was established between the “sister lakes” of Round and Crooked. Besides those two lakes, there is also Dewey Lake, Cable Lake and Magician Lake, which at 498 acres is the largest lake among its sisters.• Despite its size and noto-riety, Sister Lakes actually isn’t an incorporated city. Instead, it’s composed of

two townships, Keeler and Silver Creek. It’s also nes-tled between three different counties, Cass, Berrien and Van Buren. • One of Sister Lakes’ old-est attractions, Ramona Roller Rink, was conceived as something else entirely by founders Charles and Harry Adams. Originally known as Ramona Dance Hall, the building hosted “big name bands” in the 1930s and 1940s. The building began hosting skating nights in the 1950s, and in the decade that fol-

lowed, phased out dancing entirely.• It appears that humans aren’t the only ones who en-joy the tranquil waters of the region. In 1964, residents began reporting sightings of a “bigfoot-like creature,” which became known as “The Sister Lakes Monster.” The alleged sightings drew hundreds of inquisitive visi-tors to the region; so many in fact, that the police offi-cers in charge of finding the creature spent a majority of their time chasing off would-be monster hunters.
