Summer Reading

Sessions

Hit the Mark!

Dozens of educators invested a morning

to read through a lot of new music for

string orchestra and young band. The

event was held at Plymouth HS on July

11th. A special thanks to Bryan Ames

for hosting this event in their wonderful

facility. A FREE piece of music was

given to everyone as a thank you for

their participation. View more photos

on Page 5.

Alfred Music provided two outstanding

clinicians for the event. Robert Sheldon

led the band reading session and local

favorite, Steve Reed, retired orchestra

director from St. Joseph, MI. conducted

the orchestra!

Nathanael Sudduth from LaVille J r /

Sr High said “This is wonderful every

year! Please continue to provide this

opportunity. Thank you!”

“Love the reading session! Very helpful

to see the music.” remarked Emilie

Grondin of Stanley Clark School.

Charles Lawrence from Adams HS

commented, “More cowbell & more

percussion!”

Robert Sheldon was our guest speaker

for the event. Well known as a composer

and arranger, Bob shared some great

stories of his long career in education

and some

amusing sto-

ries of his

short-lived

golfing career!

Since the nom-

inations and

selections are

done by fellow

music educators, the awards are very

meaningful to the recipients. Each re-

cipient shared some thoughts with the

audience.

The Michiana Outstanding Music Edu-

cator Awards program is part of a full

day of educator events sponsored by QF.

The day begins with Band & Orchestra

reading sessions, followed by the awards

luncheon, and finally the Maury Rhodes

Classic golf outing. A picture-perfect

day for golf played on beautiful Swan

Lake Golf course.. The event provided

opportunities for prizes, meeting new

friends and enjoying the day. We are

grateful to our sponsors for their support

listed on Page Two.

Our company was ranked in the Top

Baby-Boomers still laugh out loud (I think

it’s now LOL) when we hear these six

words. In the Seventies, Cheech & Chong

made us laugh so hard we cried with their

comedy classic, “Sister Mary Elephant”.

Suffice to say, if you have never heard

this, go to YouTube and check it out.

Never the less, this summer included a trip

to Boston with my wife, Cindy and friend,

Qian Ni, own-

career selling violins from his car in Bos-

added guitars and wind instruments to it’s

highly recognized string instrument offer-

ings. Eastman acquired the iconic Haynes

Flute Co. of Boston a few years ago, and a

few months ago acquired S.E.Shires, a

brass workshop of the highest caliber.

Our Boston trip included tours of both

facilities...wow!

Welcome to one of our largest group of

new string teachers to enter our profes-

sion or attain a new position in the Chi-

cagoland area!

You are now among the best! The quali-

ty of orchestra programs in our area is

strong and vibrant. The reason? The

reason is you. Regarding orchestra pro-

gram development in public schools, the

“not so secret” truth is that the strongest

variable for success of orchestral pro-

grams is the teacher. Whether I am play-

ing among a group of orchestra teachers

in our QF reading session, hanging out at

a concert or festival, or gathering togeth-

er socially, I realize I am among the best

in professionalism and musicianship.

As Steve Reed commented recently at

the QF reading session, “thank you all

for playing SO MUSICALLY! I con-

duct these often and not always is the

playing so musical”. Personally, I sin-

cerely enjoy hearing everyone talk with

excitement about how eager they are to

get back to working with their young

musicians. No wonder enrollment in

programs is growing in spite of all kinds

of sour barriers. Good work!

Here Are Some of

Our Heroes!

Lloyd Palmiter, our String Specialist, brings extensive knowledge to our company stemming from his twenty years experience teaching orchestra

and cello, serving as clinician and consultant for musical instrument and education-

al organizations, and countless hours of working with students and parents to assist

in selecting the best instrument for their needs. He visits all store locations regular-

ly and is available by appointment to individually help you and your students find

just the right instrument. You’ll see Lloyd at conferences of IMEA, MENC, ASTA,

Violin Society of America, and at the International Exhibition of violinmakers in

Cremona, Italy, where he will be scouting to bring you the best quality instruments

available from all over the world! Travels to the countries of origin and hand select-

ing the instruments and bows to be included in our showrooms make our instruments

among the best available today. We maintain a vigilant effort to assure our customers that Quinlan and Fabish Strings are always known for their

value and quality.

Q&F

My summer reading

usually includes some-

thing about Theodore

Thomas the founding

conductor of the Chica-

go Symphony. The

more I learn about the

man, the more I under-

stand that, because of

his drive and persis-

tence, we all benefit today. After all, his

efforts brought us the Chicago Symphony.

In an effort to convince Maestro Thomas

to leave New York and Escape to the Mid-

west, Thomas was presented with the ques-

tion which made me laugh when I read it,

“Will you not accept the opportunity of

firmly fixing yourself for life in a position

which you can if you choose make distin-

guished and successful?” WOW! Know-

ing now what the man accomplished, it’s

fun to hear how his cheerleaders along the

way encouraged him.

Keep yourself connected. Attend the con-

ferences you can. Learn from the experi-

ence of others. When I was just starting

teaching, one pearl of wisdom I learned

from Phyllis Young was to remember that

an audience will be hearing your group.

Take the time to fix intonation early on

when the chords and harmonies are sim-

ple. And, it is a skill that they will retain.

A concert with good tone and intonation

will have everyone leaving the concert

that evening leave with a smile on their

face. Smiles defeat sour dispositions!

“Storm Warning”, for concert band,

composed by Robert Sheldon and pub-

lished by Alfred music, was specifically

for the shores of the great

lakes. It was composed as

a commission piece for

Music Alliance Summer

Band Camp of Cleveland

Ohio. The great lakes have

long been infamous for the

storms that can quickly, and violently,

tear across their shores and the cities

along them. This piece instills the audi-

ence with the image of the peaceful lake

shore before the storm and builds into a

well-developed storm, thrashing the

beaches and shores. This is a piece that

anyone who has lived near a lake shore

can appreciate.

Also from Alfred Music, “Nuttin’ for

Christmas”, for concert band, arrives

just in time for the holiday season this

year. This famous novelty, written in

1955 by Sid Tepper & Roy C. Bennett,

has been holiday favorite ever since it

was taken to No. 6 on Bil-

liboards pop charts by Art

Mooney and His Orchestra.

Following that year, the

song has remained as a fun

and memorable piece.

Many artists including Er-

tha Kitt, Smash Mouth, and most recent-

ly, Plain White T’s have indulged in

recording this piece during the holiday

seasons. Parents and students alike will

relate as they share fond memories of

this song from childhood. No Holiday

concert will be complete without this

piece this year.

A new folio that was arranged so all stu-

dents can play, including level 1 stu-

dents, has been released by Alfred Mu-

sic. “Pop and Rock Hits Instrumental

Solos” has been carefully arranged for

each instrument in a way that is accessi-

ble to all students. This will help boost

the confidence of all

young players as they are

now able to play some of

their favorite songs by

their favorite artists. The

songs included are Best

Day of My Life, Best Song

Ever, Daylight, Firework, Girl on Fire,

Home, I Need Your Love, I See Fire, Just

Give Me a Reason, Just the Way You Are

(Amazing), Roar, Stay the Night, We are

Young. This folio contains books for

Flute, Clarinet, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax,

Trumpet, F Horn, Trombone, Violin,

Viola and Cello. Which book includes a

MP3 CD which has a live performance

demo track followed by the play-along

track for each song. The CD also in-

cludes a downloadable piano accompani-

ment.

“Death by Tango” for concer t band

composed by Eddie Fairlie, published by

Brolga Music, an Australian publisher, is

a new fun and interest-

ing concert band piece

that is full of intrigue.

suspicious with each

featured instrument or

section playing a part

from a court room sce-

ne. The Alto Saxophone is the defend-

ant with the clarinet playing the support

and French Horn playing the eye wit-

ness. The music unfolds as the prosecu-

tion continues, the jury deliberates and

finally the verdict is announced (Spoiler

Alert!): guilty! The punishment – Death

by Tango. This is a piece guaranteed to

suspenseful as well as thrill the audience.

Success in All Keys is a new method

written and published by local composer

and saxophonist Eric Allen. This is an

individual method with books for Saxo-

phone, Clarinet, Flute and Oboe; Bas-

soon; Cello; Double Bass; Electric Bass;

Guitar; Horn; Keyboard

Percussion; Trombone and

Euphonium; Trumpet; Tuba

and Bass Trombone; Viola;

and Violin. This method

focuses on taking students

through more difficult keys

while keeping melodies and rhythms

more simple. This allows the player to

solely focus on the key and fingerings

without being hindered by more advance

playing techniques. This method aims to

make all keys comfortable for all stu-

dents. While this is not a method for

beginners, it is a method meant for al-

most all students and can be used by any

player already playing in a moderate

range. This method will benefit any one

looking to increase their success in all

keys.

FJH Music Company has expanded their

Measures of Success series to now en-

compass orchestra. “Measures of Suc-

cess for String Orchestra, Book 1” is

now available with books for Violin,

Viola, Cello, Double Bass,

Piano and Conductor. The

all-in-one DVD included

in every book not only

includes accompaniment

track sand videos, but also

the ability to download

some of that content, partnered with

SmartMusic. Each book starts with a

brief history of that instrument and

moves right into properly holding and

handling the instrument. From there, the

book layout features a goal orientated

approach to teaching. It includes eight

arrangements and original compositions

for string orchestra, duets, rounds, solos

and play-alongs. The composers of this

method: Gail V. Barnes, Brian Bal-

mages, Carrie Lane Gruselle & Mi-

chael Trowbridge, also made cer tain

that the method meets the National

Standards and Benchmarks for Music

Education.

Amanda Jennings is a bassoonist and

a former band director. As print music

buyer for Q&F, she has the opportunity

to preview every new publication. She

will keep you up to date on the latest

new issue music and happenings in the

publishing world!
