In the Middle “Roots to Grow - Wings to Fly.” Qatar Academy Sidra Middle School 2014 - 15 May 2015 Qatar Academy Sidra An International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) Candidate School MS Principal Update by Dr. Timothy Chute I would like to thank all the parents who came out for the Three-way Conferences (Parent-Teacher – Student interviews) in April. We were a little overwhelmed with the response as we had more parents attend the April interviews than in November. We will continue find new ways to make it easier for parents to meet with teachers next year. It is really important that students attend these interviews with their parents so that they are included in the conversation. Mr. Massiah, the Director for QA Sidra, announced in his recent newsletter that Qatar Foundation has adopted a new school uniform for next year. A new supplier from England has been chosen and the new uniforms will be of better quality. The Primary School colours will be maroon on the bottom with white tops (similar to now); the students in Grades 6 – 10 will wear grey pants or skirts and a white shirt with the QA Sidra logo. Students in Grades 11 – 12 will wear black pants or skirts and a white shirt. More details will soon be announced from the Pre-university office. We are in the final stages for creating next year’s student and teachers’ schedules. We will have nine sections in the Secondary School (SS = Grades 6 – 10). New courses being offered to our students include Drama, Textiles and Spanish. We will not be offering Language Acquisition French next year. Ten MS students represented QA Sidra at the Middle School Model United Nations MUN Conference recently held here in Doha, Qatar. The students were involved in their committee groups, learned a lot and represented our school well. Well done Nadia (Gr 6); Kareen, Leena, Sarah & Lucas(Gr 7); and Jewel, Suntus, Sapheya, Osama, and Olivia (Gr 8).

Students and teachers from Doha British School were invited to visit our G9 students. The aim was for our students to interview them and find out more about the IB Diploma, CAS and the Formula 1 project. The G9 students will be using the responses to the interview questions and their own research to create a mini-personal project about the IB Diploma. By  Saif  Banat  We  waited  and  waited  untill  the  day  that  the  5  CAS  Formula  1  team  members  would  come  from  Doha  British  School,  and  that  was  on  May  17th  2015.  As  the  team

alongside  their  two  teachers  came  into  the  school  we  welcomed  them  and  treated  them  with  lunch  in  the  staff  lounge.  They  ate  delightedly  and  we  spoke  a  little  with  them.  But  then  the  time  for  the  real  talk  came.      For  a  few  weeks  now  we  have  been  coming  up  with  questions  to  ask  the  Formula  1  team  about.  After  the  lovely  lunch  they  ate,  they  were  ready  to  answer  our  long  awaited  questions.  Our  ninth  grade  class  was  split  into  5  groups.  We  would  go  to  each  of  six  classes  were  we  sat  together  with  an  individual  of  the  F1  team  (or  the  teachers)  and  had  a  little  chat.  We  went  around  to  all  five  members  and  their  teachers  and  asked  them  all  we  could  ask  from  a-‐z.  We  finally  wrapped  up  the  event  with  a  reflection  in  Mrs.  Wendy's  room  and  bid  them  farewell.  Special  thanks  to  Mrs.  Wendy,  Mr.  Zephyr,  and  Mrs.  Amanda  for  helping  us  set  up  this  awesome  event!  And  a  very  large  thank  you  to  the  F1  team  alongside  their  teachers  who  took  a  part  out  of  their  day  to  help  us  in  our  IB  journey!

Globalization Grade 8 Individuals and Societies Writing an artic le : choosing a picture of interest that resembles Globalization in Qatar and doing a See-Think-feel-Wonder exerc ise to start up your research.

1

Retell-Relate-Reflect by Jewel Dsouza 8A In this assignment I first found a picture related to the topic I wanted to research about. The topic that interested me the most was the treatment of construction workers in Qatar. After I choose the picture I conducted a See-Think-Wonder. This helped me further formulate my research questions and narrow down my topic. The next thing I had to do was create a bunch of factual questions for my topic. The answers to that question will either lead to further research or more questions. It also helped me come up with my conceptual question. In order to get answers to my factual questions I had to find reliable sources. I went on a hunt

online and found about 5 really good sources. The sources I chose had a lot of good information. All through the process, I made sure I filled in the Big 6 steps along the way and the KWHL chart. I gathered all my notes and began writing my article. I also made sure I cited my sources in MLA style. When I was done with the article I ended it with a debatable question. I made sure to include two perspectives and two sides of the story. The ending questions could be answered by peoples comments or even by a debate. In my opinion, I think that it would be a very interesting topic to discuss or debate about. This topic reminded me of my 7th grade project of the Human Rights documentary. I believe every human being deserves to be treated equally and right. This assignment made me think globally about other countries such as Brazil. I wonder if any workers were harmed building the stadiums in Brazil? I could only answer this question if I had done my research. I could relate this topic to the case studies I learned about in the Globalization book. I truly enjoyed this unit and I am very satisfied with my work. I am also very proud with it because at first I was hesitant about writing an actual article. This unit gave me lots of research skills which I can use in the future. This made me get excited for 10th grade and my personal project. I think when you care about a certain topic you will try your best for finding out whatever you can. This was definitely one of those times. I’m really looking forward to the next project and setting up goals. Avery 8B My article is about the impact workers have on Qatar, and how it relates to globalization. In my article I talk about how everything is connected. I also mention a few of the different parts of making a country globalize. I am specifically speaking about a man named Ruhal and the impact he had on globalization in Qatar.

Sapheya Elhadi 8A I chose to write my article on issues regarding air pollution in Qatar, and how it relates to globalization. Pollution is a matter that has bothered me for years, leading to earlier research on this topic, and various science experiments to calculate my family’s carbon footprint and also my school’s. However, this time I researched a country that mattered to me because I lived in it: Qatar; because what’s the point of learning about the air pollution and effects of it of a different country, that means nothing to you? The environment should be important to us, especially the air, since without, all people would be dead. In my article, I discussed the causes of air pollution in Qatar, the diseases that can merge because of the pollution, the connection between the factories and oil fields to this topic, and future issues that can rise because of air pollution. I’ve learned throughout this process how much damage air pollution can cause to the environment, as well as to the health of humans, but also that people can reverse this, by doing simple things, like stop smoking, and walking more. The government can also do so much to benefit the country, and to be honest, Qatar has the money, and with money, the possibilities are endless. By  Nikola  Mery  On  Tuesday,  April  28th,  the  7th  graders  had  an  opportunity  to  develop

their  leadership  skills  through  a  collaborative  effort  in  working  with  the  5th  graders.  The  7th  graders  assisted  the  5th  graders  with  developing  better  preparation,  organization  and  problem  solving  skills,  while  also  strengthening  their  comprehension  of  the  approaches  to  learning.  The  overall  experience  was  very  successful  for  both  grade  levels  academically  as  well  as  on  a  personal  social  level.  The  5th  graders  were  able  to  reflect  on  how  the  experience  strengthened  their  understanding  of  math  concepts  such  as  subtraction  of  like-‐terms.  The  7th  graders  were  able  to  reflect  on  how  the  experience  strengthened  the  development  of  active  listening,  communication  skills  and  overall  knowledge  of  math  concepts.
