The earthquake that hit the northern coastof Japan on March 11th, 2011, was recordedat magnitude 9.0— the worst ever recordedin Japan. It generated an unprecedented tsu-nami, obliterating coastal villages and townsin a matter of minutes. In some areas, thetsunami climbed over 100 feet in height andtraveled miles inland.

In Surviving the Tsunami, A Nova Spe-cial, amateur and professional photogra-phers capture it all on video, including re-markable tales of human survival, as ordi-nary citizens became heroes in a drama theynever could have imagined. Their stories arecaptured in video and retold after-the-fact bythe survivors who reveal what they were think-ing as they made their life-saving decisions.

Surviving the Tsunami, A Nova Spe-cial airs Wednesday, June 25th at 9:00 p.m.,Saturday, June 28th at 10:00 p.m., and Sun-day, June 29th at midnight. On HD3-1, it airsWednesday, June 25th at 9:00 p.m., Thurs-day, June 26th at 11:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.,and Sunday, June 29th at 4:00 p.m.

Driven to Distraction, produced in New Mexico, highlights themost recent brain research involving cell phone use, DWI, and othercauses of crashes. The program reports on why distracted drivingcrashes are rising at an alarming rate, especially for young people.

The program is designed to help viewers understand the dangers as-sociated with distracted driving and provide them with specific toolsand suggestions to lessen the chance of a crash. With regard to teenag-ers, in particular, the program emphasizes good choices when drivingand also the serious consequences of bad choices. Research shows:

•Talking on the cell phone while driving (hand held or hands free)is the same impairment as having a .08 BAC (blood alcohol content).

•Drivers using cell phones are 5 times more likely to crash than non-distracted drivers.

•78% of teens now have cell phones and 47% are smart phones.•One in four teens respond to a text message once or more every time

they drive.•More than 3,800 drivers aged 15-20 are killed and over 325,000

are injured every year in crashes.•One teenage passenger with a teen driver doubles the risk of a fa-

tal crash; the risk is five times higher when two or more teens ride along.Driven to Distraction can be seen Monday, June 16th at 9:00 p.m.

and Sunday, June 29th at 10:00 a.m. On HD3-1, it airs Monday, June16th at 9:00 p.m. and Wednesday, June 25th at 11:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Everyone wants to behappy, yet many of the com-mon pursuits of happiness—money, fame, status—don’tlead to the desired result.Recently, modern sciencehas begun to examine howhappiness works. Expertsappearing in Happy pro-vide fascinating insightsinto the research and how itapplies to our daily lives.

Happy engages the viewer to examine preconceived no-tions about the causes and sources of happiness. It may sur-prise some that a rickshaw driver in the slums of Kolkata (for-merly known as Calcutta) living in a hut made of plastic bagsis found to be as happy as the average American. A womanwho is disfigured and disabled from a car accident is happierthan she was before the accident. Through these and other in-spiring stories, Happy leads us toward a deeper understand-ing of how our happiness can be cultivated and shared regard-less of circumstance and external conditions. While happi-ness can’t be purchased or won, it is a skill that can belearned.

Happy will be broadcast Sunday, June 1st at 10:00 a.m.and Sunday, June 8th at 2:30 p.m. On HD3-1, Happy can beseen Tuesday, June 3rd at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, June 8th at8:30 p.m.

ADD or ADHD is a national health cri-sis that continues to grow, yet it remains oneof the most misunderstood and incorrectlytreated illnesses today. Kids and adults areput on powerful stimulant medications inshort office visits without any biological in-formation, and the stories of these medica-tions hurting children and adults are commonand persistent. In Healing ADD, psychiatrist DanielAmen and his wife, nurse Tana Amen, take a

completely new look at ADD and explain 7 uniquetypes based on the extensive brain imaging work of the Amen

Clinics on tens of thousands of ADD patients.Treating all people with ADD the same invites failure and frustration

and can be a disaster, as the traditional treatments that make two of thetypes better, can make the other five types worse.

The program is divided into three parts. In part one, the myths and mis-conceptions about ADD are discussed as well as the hallmark ADD symp-toms.

In part two, the 7 different types of ADD are described in detail. And,in part three, Dr. and Mrs. Amen provide a clear method for HealingADD, including the best natural treatments. They are not opposed to medi-cation, but think it’s smart to start with lifestyle and natural treatmentsfirst.

3-1 Washington Week

In Tragedy & Courage on the BeringSea, Captain Dave Shoemaker gives a grip-ping account of the fire that consumed his190-foot fishing vessel, Galaxy, in 2002.

Shoemaker was alone in the wheelhouseshortly after 1600 hours when one of hisforemen burst into the wheelhouse andshouted that there was smoke in the fish fac-tory. Within four minutes, the vessel wouldbe rocked by the first of many explosions.Crippled, without power or steerage in thefifteen to twenty foot seas and 30-knotwinds, forced out of the wheelhouse by theintense fire that roared out of control belowdecks, without radio communications, withmen in the water, with the port life raft con-sumed in flames, and survival suits melting onthe blistering deck plates, Shoemakerstruggled to save his crew mates and himself.

For saving twenty three of the twenty sixmen and women aboard the Galaxy that day,Shoemaker would be awarded the U.S.Coast Guard’s Gold Lifesaving Medal, theagency’s highest civilian commendation forheroism.

Tragedy & Courage on the Bering Seaairs Thursday, June 12th at 7:00 p.m. andTuesday, June 17th at 8:00 p.m. On HD3-1,it airs Monday, June 2nd at 7:00 a.m. and1:00 p.m.

Anders Zorn in the Gilded Age

Anders Zorn in the Gilded Age

Midnight, 1891

One of the most famous living artists at the turn of the 20th century, Swedish bornAnders Zorn (1860–1920) dazzled the art world with his bravura paintings, watercolors, and etchings. His early travels took him to Spain and Algeria where the intense colorand light inspired the virtuoso watercolorist to perfect his craft. Zorn loved the femaleform and was famous for his nude paintings as well as his vivid depictions of water.

Zorn made numerous trips to the United States and among his most significantAmerican portraits were those of presidents Grover Cleveland and William Howard Taft. While in America, he rivaled John Singer Sargent as the most sought-after portraitist ofglittering high society.
