festPa’s Fiddle is an intimate evening of music and songs selected

from the writings of Laura Ingalls Wilder, beloved author of theLittle House on the Prairie books. This was the music that youngLaura heard her Pa play on his fiddle, accompanying her family dur-ing their celebrated adventures on America’s vast prairies in theyears just after the Civil War.

Performances from Randy Travis, Rodney Atkins, RonnieMilsap, Committed, Natalie Grant, Ashton Shepherd, and the Roysare accompanied by an all-star Nashville band led by Grammy-win-ner Randy Scruggs.

In Wilder’s memory, the music was played by her Pa on his fiddleunder the vast western sky, by the potbelly stoves of their many littlehouses, at church services and at Saturday night socials. It wasplayed to entertain, to celebrate, and often to divert attention frombone-chilling cold, hunger, and deprivation. For Wilder and mil-lions of others, music bound them together; Pa’s Fiddle is an echofrom our collective past, celebrating our shared musical heritage.

The songs in Pa’s Fiddle cross many genres: songs of our an-cestors and families like “Soldier’s Joy” and “Devil’s Dream”;ballads and love songs like “Gum Tree Canoe” and “The Girl I LeftBehind Me”; humorous songs such as “Buffalo Gals” and “Old DanTucker”; and songs of faith like “Rock of Ages” and “The Sweet

The ultimate love story continues in LoveNever Dies, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s spell-binding follow-up musical to the phenom-enal Phantom of the Opera. This dazzlingproduction takes audiences on a thrillingrollercoaster ride of intrigue, obsession, andromance.

In Love Never Dies, the audience istransported to New York’s playground, Co-ney Island. There, the masked phantom hasbeen hiding amongst the freaks and sideshows for 10 long years, yearning for his onetrue love and musical protégée, ChristineDaaé. Lured by the bright lights and finan-cial rewards of Coney, Christine and herfamily flee Manhattan to perform on stagefor one last time, but Christine soon discov-ers the true identity of her mysterious impre-sario and that all is not what it seems.

The performance features a 21-piece or-chestra and an impressive cast of 36, includ-ing highly praised musical actors Ben Lewisas the Phantom and Anna O’Byrne as hisChristine.

Love Never Dies will be broadcast Sun-day, June 3rd at 6:00 p.m.

Alfie Boe, best known for his role as JeanValjean in the 25th anniversary stage showof Les Misérables, showcases his mesmer-izing and outstanding voice in Alfie Boe:Live from the Royal Festival Hall, Lon-don, a concert filmed during his latest sold-out tour.

Known as “The People’s FavoriteTenor,” Boe delights with a truly magicalperformance that highlights his magnificentstage presence as he performs a selection ofuniquely inspired renditions from some ofthe best-loved musicals of all time, includ-ing Sunset Boulevard, Company, West SideStory and, of course, Les Misérables.

Other selections that showcase Boe’sability to connect to the lyrics include EwanMacColl’s heartfelt “The First Time Ever ISaw Your Face” and an emotional perfor-mance of Martina McBride’s “In MyDaughter’s Eyes.” A rousing medley ofJames Bond theme songs rounds out the di-verse collection of material.

Picture a late night, amid the craziness ofthe 1960s, and see a vulnerable, largely mis-understood woman in her 40s. She’s athome, or maybe on the road again. Onething is certain: she’s alone, speaking ran-domly into a tape recorder. “I’m just tryingto get a few things down,” she says. “I’m allby myself, as usual. Don’t know if anybodyis interested, but I am. I’m just trying to beheard.”

The woman is Judy Garland, and heardshe is, in American Masters “Judy Gar-land: By Myself,” the first film that drew onGarland’s own words to tell her story. Pulledlargely from recordings she made in prepa-ration for an autobiography she never fin-ished, “By Myself” is in a unique positionto reveal Garland as she saw herself.

American Masters “Judy Garland: ByMyself”airs Friday, June 22nd at 9:00 p.m.

Afghanistan: The Surge attempts toshed light on why the Afghanistan war hasbeen so frustrating and seemingly withoutprogress.

In the two-hour program, a platoon ofskilled, motivated Marines are sent to a re-mote outpost to eliminate Taliban influence. The Taliban do not stand and fight, how-ever. Instead, using simple IEDs, theycripple Marine mobility and keep the Ma-rines hemmed into a narrow valley while theTaliban operates from its untouchable head-quarters only eight miles from the Marineoutpost.

At a time when the Afghanistan war maywell be a central part of the presidential elec-tion, Afghanistan: The Surge can be a partof that conversation.

Afghanistan: The Surge will be broad-cast Wednesday, June 20th at 7:00 p.m.

At the time of Queen Victoria’s birthin 1819, England was an agrarian soci-ety. Within a few short decades, thissmall island nation would be trans-formed into an industrial superpower, with an empire spanning the globe.

Queen Victoria’s Empire, a four-hour series, is both the story of this re-markable time and an engaging portrait of a queen who ruled overa fifth of the world’s population. It is the story of influential menwho would shape a distinctively British imperialism: Gladstone,Disraeli, Livingstone, Rhodes, and Prince Albert, Victoria’s hus-band. Whether driven by profit, passion or noble deeds, these fig-ures would fuel expansion unequaled in history, forever changingBritain and the lands it controlled.

From former outposts of the Empire, including Africa and India, the series recounts the dramatic clash of personalities and culturesthat would drive Victoria’s remarkable 64-year reign.

Queen Victoria’s Empire airs Tuesday, June19th at 7:00 p.m.(Pts. 1 & 2) and Tuesday, June 26th at 7:00 p.m. (Pts. 3 & 4).

“Wham! Bam! Islam!” on In-dependent Lens follows one ofthe most intriguing recent storiesto come out of the Middle East.In 2003, Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa—aKuwaiti psychologist and gradu-ate of Columbia BusinessSchool—had a unique idea: createa comic book series with roots inIslam and Islamic culture. Al-Mutawa came up with the concept ofTHE 99, a team of superheroes who each exemplify one of the 99attributes of Allah and fight together against evil. He saw THE 99 asnot only a smart business model, but as an idealistic social endeavor.

Believing that “Muslim children need new heroes,” Al-Mutawa’sTHE 99 would reinforce the traditional Islamic virtues of compas-sion, understanding, and tolerance, and provide a positive alterna-tive to some of the extremist messages fed to young Muslims. He alsohoped that THE 99 would help improve the image of Islam in the West.

Despite facing a daunting task that had never been attempted(comics were relatively unknown in the Arab market except for afew Western imports), Al-Mutawa managed to raise $7 million ininitial capital from 54 investors across four continents. He even lureda team of Marvel comic veterans to the creative team for THE 99.

Engrossing and fast-paced, “Wham! Bam! Islam!” is a fascinat-ing look at what happens when ideals, money, religion, and pop cul-ture collide in the global marketplace.

Wham! Bam! Islam!” on Independent Lens airs Wednesday,June 13th at 9:00 p.m.

The Wages of Spin: Dick Clark, American Bandstand andthe Payola Scandals is a fascinating and provocative account ofthe evolution of the Philadelphia music scene between 1952 and1962. Pulling no punches, the documentary takes on the highly-con-troversial subject of the Payola scandals of the time period and oneof the industry’s first true moguls–Dick Clark.

The Wages of Spin combines extensive research into Clark’sbusiness dealings with first hand accounts by those artists and man-agers who witnessed his empire-building from its inception. For thefirst time on film, various artists describe the deals they were forcedto make by Clark’s machine and the consequences of his avarice. The program documents the businesses that Clark created to use“Bandstand” for personal wealth aggrandizement and his unscathedemergence from the Payola scandals.

Chubby Checker, Connie Francis, Fabian, Frankie Avalon, LenBarry, Charlie Gracie, Mike Love and Bruce Johnson of The BeachBoys, and others are featured.

The Wages of Spin: Dick Clark, American Bandstand andthe Payola Scandals can be seen Friday, June 1st at 9:00 p.m. andSunday, June 17th at 11:00 p.m.

“Precious Knowledge” on In-dependent Lens reports from thefrontlines of one of the most con-tentious battles in public educa-tion in recent memory, the fightover Mexican American studiesprograms in Arizona publicschools.

While 48 percent of Mexican American students currently dropout of high school, Tucson High’s Mexican American Studies Pro-gram has become a national model of educational success, with 93percent of enrolled students, on average, graduating from highschool, and 85 percent going on to attend college.

When Arizona lawmakers pass a bill giving unilateral power tothe State Superintendent to abolish ethnic studies classes, teachers, and student leaders fight to save the program.

Lawmakers and politicians respond with a public relations cam-paign to discredit the students, claiming that a textbook used in theclasses, Paulo Freire’s The Pedagogy of the Oppressed teaches vic-timization and sedition. Officials ask that the classroom’s CheGuevara posters be replaced with portraits of founding father Ben-jamin Franklin.

The film interweaves interviews with students enrolled in theMexican American Studies Program at Tucson High School withthose of teachers, parents, school officials, and the lawmakers whowish to outlaw the classes.

“Precious Knowledge” on Independent Lens will be broadcastSunday, June 17th at 2:00 p.m.

Sherlock Holmes and theHound of the Baskervilles:

Theater of the MindSherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervilles is one

of the most famous detective stories ever written. Published in1901 and 1902, it originally appeared in nine monthly install-ments in The Strand magazine. Now the Karen Hastings Players present Philip Grecian’sradio adaptation of this classic tale.

It’s radio you can see, complete with actors, music, and a crew of sound effects techni-cians, creating it all right before your eyes. As is the custom with these dramas, the actorsplay multiple roles and employ vintage microphones to simulate radio’s Golden Age. Theyportray radio performers of the 1940s, and so Holmes’ deerstalker cap and Inverness cloak, like Victorian London, are created through theater of the mind, in the imaginations of thelistening audience.

Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervilles: Theater of the Mind can beseen Sunday, June 17th at 9:30 p.m.

Both Dish Network and DirecTV Satellite services are now carrying KENW-TV in theAlbuquerque-Santa Fe Designated Market Area (DMA). This DMA includes all countiesin New Mexico except Roosevelt, Curry, Quay, Union, and Dona Ana. Both DirecTV andDish Network are carrying the KENW-TV High Definitions Channel (HD 3-1) and theKENW-TV Standard Definition (SD 3-2).

The Nielsen Company decides which counties go into the various DMAs. At the presenttime, there are 210 DMAs in the United States. In population size, the Albuquerque-SantaFe DMA is the 45th largest in the U.S. because it takes in most of the State of New Mexico.Nielsen determines the counties in a DMA by which television stations the viewers in thatcounty are watching.

By Nielsen rules, DirecTV and Dish Network subscribers in Union, Quay, Curry, andRoosevelt counties will receive the Amarillo PBS station. In all other counties of NewMexico, except for Dona Ana, subscribers will receive PBS from KENW-TV (Portales)and KNME-TV (Albuquerque). Dona Ana is in the El Paso DMA, and those subscriberswill receive PBS from KRWG-TV (Las Cruces) and KCOS-TV (El Paso).
