Aims and objectives
Overview of minor oral surgical procedures carried out in general dental practice and toimprove the provision of these procedures by the GDP.
To provide opportunity for dentist's to gain confidence to perform simple surgicalextractions within the general practice.
To understand basic surgical principles including flap design, suturing techniques andbone removal.
To identify risk and manage complications in minor oral surgery and to understand whenand what to refer.
The above aims and objectives are supported by series of lectures, casediscussion and hands on practical skills on a pigs head.

The course details:
• Extraction techniques including chair positioning and choice of instruments in specific situations.
• Ideal contents of a surgical tray/pack and simple armamentarium.
• Clinical and radiological assessment of teeth before extraction.
• Principles and technique for using elevators and luxators in the removal of roots and impacted teeth.
• Anatomical consideration and basic principles of flap elevation, bone removal and suturing techniques.
• Complications of dental extractions and it's management.
• Oral surgical tricks of the trade.
• When and what to refer
• Practical session on pigs head (skills lab)
• Case discussion-participants can bring cases to discuss management
