LETTER RIP

I grew up in the suburbs of north St. Louis County not too far from a place called Fergu-son. In fact, that is where most of us had to travel in order to take our driving test. Ferguson was an old town, historic and quiet. From the looks of it today, especially in the eyes of the main stream media, it has become a hell hole of sorts, where the rules of the old west still apply. Or does it? I guess I am a hopeful romantic when it comes to civic pride and duty. Heck, I even ran in Missouri as Libertarian for a spot in the General Assembly. I guess I’m a freedom and

responsibility guy. Which brings me to the point at hand. If you rush a police officer, you are asking to be shot. Not in the head mind you, but a couple of bullets to the legs will render your attack mute and you’ll stay alive to enjoy a little jail time. I guess I should also admit that I was on the Neighborhood Watch Commission for the city

of Hazelwood in Missouri for a couple of years as well. Good times, good times. Now, being a member of either the Neighbor-hood Watch or the police force slightly tips the public favor away, thanks Trayvon and Mike. This should not be the case. I have friends who serve on the police forces for the Woodlands, Shenandoah, as well as in Spring respectively. These are good men and women who want to serve the public, and not have to deal with nutjobs high on pot thinking they are invincible. So. if you want to get stoned (a euphemism for getting high) then stay home. Don’t go out and steal munchies (a stoned person’s vernacu-lar for snack food) or a box of cigars. Ferguson did not have to happen the way it did. Those who felt Mike Brown was a victim did not want justice, they wanted revenge regardless of the outcome for Officer Wilson. Other folks joined along because they felt that the shooting gave them the pretense for

looting. Granted, what happened in Ferguson is a long shot away from happening in Houston. But why wait? Public perception of law enforce-ment is at a low. Forfeiture Laws are a bane to everyone and the police are the ones holding the ill gotten merchandise benefitting from an maladministered law meant to deter serious crimes such as human trafficking and the like. I suggest we should start there and then work our way back to the era of good feelings.

THE UNBREAKABLE JONESES

I met your street team in Galveston during Dickens on the Strand. We’d love to have an edition of the Public News in and covering things going on in Galveston. We’re pretty much on our own with the local media and the weak coverage. Wishing you continued good luck with the Public News. I’m looking forward to the cov-erage of things happening here on the Strand as well as other places on the island.Andy F.

*****

I love Anna Pinion’s work. She’s pretty and has a sharp tongue. Is she single? Chico M.Ed. - No, not to our knowledge, but then again, what do we know?

*****

I’m saddened that Bart Pearston’s “To The Republic” is gone. His column was a good read and always had a local bent. Will you have another to take his place?Bruce R.Ed. - No, Bart is still a part of the Public News and the next installment of his column hits next week.

Is the Public News going to start covering the scene in Montrose and on Westheimer, or are you going to continue to cover just the north area of Houston?Mike M.Ed. - Our wings are not bound to any one part of Houston anymore, but we do intend to be a voice to the voiceless. And so far, the north metro area seems to be the most under served and silenced of them all.

*****

Great review of JPs Grill in issue #3. I’ve always wanted to check them out but don’t really know anything about them. That is until I read your review. The burgers take a bit longer to make. Considering that this is the case, I would caution anyone on a time schedule to wait until they have time to sit down and enjoy their food. I’m love checking out new places. Are you planning on reviewing Skinny Pig, Puffabellys or any of the other eateries in Old Town Spring?Jim E.Ed. - Yes, in fact Skinny Pig is reviewed in this issue. The others will come soon enough.

*****

Are you hiring?Harold B. Ed. - For Account Executives right now. Send us your resume if interested. [email protected]

*****

What ever happened to Heather Jackson, Carl Palmgren and Bart Pearston. I enjoyed their columns. I noticed their columns are no longer in the paper now that you have done digital-only. They are still listed as contrib-uting writers for the Public News, are they coming back?Robert L.Ed. - Yes, Bart is coming back (see letter above) and we hope to have both Heather Jackson and Carl Palmgren writing with us again soon.

*****

I just wanted to say how much I enjoy get-ting my paper digitally. I thought this would suck, but since my Nook reads this just like a book I’ve gotten use to it.

*****

Andy Singer is a great toonist (is that a word?) and I enjoy his wit and humor. I’m looking forward to each Public News just to see this. It’s almost as good as going to his website!Gina P.Ed. - We’re happy Andy is part of the Public News family too!

The Woodlands – Every year the South Montgomery County YMCA recognizes an outstanding volunteer for his/her generosity of spirit, hard work and compassion for others. This year we are pleased to announce that a very deserving organization and community partner has been named this year’s YMCA Volunteer of the Year – Faith Bible Church. Ethan Collins, representing Faith Bible Church, was presented with the award at the YMCA of Greater Houston’s Annual Celebra-tion on Tuesday, November 18 at the Hilton Americas hotel. He joined 32 others, each representing an individual YMCA center. “It has been a blessing to our Church family to participate in this small way,” explains Ethan. “To see the generous support from our community, local service organizations and the Y staff and volunteers, is heartwarming. As our church continues to look for ways to have an impact in our Community, the YMCA has given us an absolutely fantastic platform to serve through. We praise God for his faithful-ness and for the partner He has provided our Church family in the local YMCA”. The YMCA and Faith Bible Church have collaborated on several different programs for the last couple of years, to meet the basic needs of hundreds of children and their fami-lies. These programs include “Good News” Clubs created in local YMCA Caring Commu-nity Centers and in after school programs here in the Woodlands and surrounding communi-ties. These groups spread Christian values and Faith based teaching to children enrolled in these programs. Children were given op-portunities to attend Faith Based events such as Summer Splash at local pools, field trips to Camp Gospel Lakes, and seasonal carnivals at the Caring Community Center’s apartment complexes. In addition, Faith Bible Church hosted the YMCA outreach summer camps providing a safe and fun place to pray and

play! The summer camps offered an opportu-nity for fellowship for both children and teens working with staff from both the YMCA and Faith Bible Church and included daily devo-tions and ministry. One of our largest joint ef-forts includes the seasonal outreach programs we host at Faith Bible Church. Operation Backpack provides backpacks and school supplies to 400 outreach children annually. At Christmas, the annual Angel Tree program provides gifts to families in need serving 500 children, teens and adults. The church generously provides their facilities, resources, volunteers, supplies and support in every way needed. “Faith Bible Church positively influenced the community through their giving spirit,” said Landrum Turner, Executive Director of the Shadowbend YMCA. “We are so proud that this organization gives so much of their time and resources to support the local YMCA and impact the lives of individuals and fami-lies. Their dedication makes the YMCA and the community a better place for everyone. The YMCA has been blessed with the op-portunity to establish a community partnership with Faith Bible Church. Looking towards the future we are proud to continue to work together striving to meet the needs of our out-reach programs and strengthening families in our community in spirit, mind and body. God works miracles and bring people and programs together to serve His purpose.” Throughout the year, the YMCA relies on volunteers to assist in different capacities. Volunteers come from different walks of life, but all have one trait in common - a desire to help others. Together, volunteers empower people and communities to learn, grow and thrive. For more information about volunteer opportunities at the YMCA, visit www.ymca-houston.org.

YMCA EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT CENTER CELEBRATES NEW LOOK AND LEGACY

YMCA Volunteers and Parents receiving the grand tour from Y Staff

by Roxanne Davis

The South Montgomery County YMCA Early Childhood Development Center, which opened in 1986, has been refurbished. The center celebrated with a reception and reunion earlier in the month to show off their “New Look”. Guests included current and former staff, volunteers, parents and students. Many of the children currently enrolled are 2nd gen-eration. The child care staff is experienced and constant with staff tenure ranging from 8 – 25 years. Many of the children currently enrolled are 2nd generation. In addition to the wide open spaces, bright colors, new paint, flooring, furniture, special themed areas for the kids to read, etc . . . the Center is offering additional enrichment opportunities including Spanish classes, provided by Learning Spark, and Y Swim safety/recreational swim and P.E Classes with Y Staff, twice a week. The new enrichment classes, for ages 3 and older, are added value and is included in the monthly fee. The YMCA Early Childhood Development Center program provides enriching experienc-es which facilitate a child’s cognitive, social, physical and emotional growth. We strive to meet the developmental needs and tempera-ment of each individual child by working in partnership with families. YMCA Early Child-hood Development programs, licensed by the State of Texas, provide curriculum focused on education, leadership and character develop-ment. With so many demands on today’s families, parents need all the support they can get. That’s why child care at the Y is about more than looking after kids. It’s about nurturing their development by providing a safe place to learn foundational skills, develop healthy, trusting relationships and build self-reliance through the Y vales of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith. The Y is so much more than a “Place to Stay”. It is a Place to Play. It is a Place for All Children to Learn, Grow and Thrive. In addition to the high level of YMCA standards and state licensing requirements, the South Montgomery County YMCA Pre-K program has been recognized as Texas School Ready. TSR has helped thousands of children across the state of Texas be more prepared for success in kindergarten and beyond.

6 DECEMBER 11 - 17, 2014 PUBLIC NEWS

Tanning Salons have earned a solid repu-tation for being a dangerous, fly-by-night operation. With tanning salons popping up one month and disappearing a few months later, eager tanners look for a salon that is safe, stable and reasonably priced. Enter William and Michelle Edwards, the father-daughter tandem that are the backbone and face of Sun Spa Tanning in Spring, just west of I-45 on Cypresswood Road. Michelle Edwards, the 32-year old blonde who is the face of the salon, sat down with the Public News to discuss the business of tanning and the flightiness of her competitors. “When I got my Mass Communications degree at Southwest Texas State (now Texas State), I had also gotten my real estate license and that helped me get into the oil and gas field.” Edwards explained her background. Even though her job paid well, she hated it and it began to show in her attitude. “I don’t do well when people tell me what to do. I’ve been fired from almost every single job I have ever had.” After six months of unemployment, she along with her sister and father started talking about what they could do, or what business they could buy. All three came to the same conclusion that a tanning salon would be the best business to invest. “My sister and I loved to tan, so it seemed like a natural business to get into. So, my dad basically bought the business for my sister and I to share” The sequence of events that led to the busi-ness purchase as eerily timed. The Edwards had searched through an entity called Certi-fied Business Brokers. Coincidence may have it that as soon as they decided to look at tanning businesses to buy, Sun Spa was put on the market. “It was at the right price and it was to be sold right now, so everything fell into place,”

Edwards recalled. In 2009 the Edwards trio bought Sun Spa Tanning, a 3-year old established business at the time. A few years later, Michelle’s sister parted ways with the pair and the business they had invested. Michelle along her father William (Bill) has run the business since the split. “I actually run the place. Dad was always there in the background and was always there if we needed him” And when Michelle and her sister parted ways, her dad was called on to help. “Dad was usually the guy behind the scenes handling finances and crunching numbers. He came down (from East Texas) to be a little more hands-on. We work well as a team together”

Since 2011, Michelle handles the customer service, marketing, sales and advertising aspect of the business while Bill handles all the finances and the number crunch-ing “The customers adore my dad” “Even though we work

well together, don’t get me wrong, we fight all the time” “But it has been great working with him and getting to spend time with him” She and her father have been always really close Was she ready to run a tanning salon busi-ness? Not really but yet was eager to try and learn. Michelle had no prior experience in the tanning business, nor was she trained by the previous owners. Her history in tanning was that of a customer. “It was pretty natural; the only thing I had to learn was how to air brush. Let’s say that my first few guinea pigs were not pretty” Those ‘guinea pigs’ were people that allowed Michelle to practice the air brush tanning technology. It was not practiced on customers.

Technology aside, her strength lies in her strong sense of customer service as it has always been in her blood.“I also applied the knowledge that I learned in college for sales and marketing. I’ve always been a natural sales person. Plus, my dad was in car sales his whole life. I always enjoy interact-ing with customers and I take pride in the fact that we offer month to month tanning. We don’t force anyone into a contract. We’re reasonably priced, especially our airbrush tanning. I sleep better at night knowing that I’m not ripping people off.” There have been four or five competitors locally but they have all but one closed down. The lone competitive survivor is the one just down the street across from Spring High School and even they look like their days

may be numbered. “There’s not a whole lot of competition left, so that’s pretty good!” What sets Sun Spa Tanning apart from the ones who have failed? The reason that they have done well and main-tained their high ratings on Yelp, Google and others is simple according to Edwards.---They are there when they’re supposed to be.“We keep our posted hours.”---They do whatever they need to do to keep their customers happy. Other than the tanning beds, what other services do they provide? “We do airbrush tanning and of course tanning beds. We used to do body wraps, but we quit doing them.” The product mix is 50% tanning, and the other half is air-brush tanning and product such as lotions and goggles. How does tanning work? A customer fills out a new member form on which they indicate what type of skin pig-ment that have. Once that is determined, either Edwards or one of her staff along with the customer work out a plan to create their perfect tan. “We start out generally slow so that our customers don’t burn.” In addition, some people get addicted to tanning, as UVA (Ultraviolet Rays) release feel good hormones and can be-come quite addicting. Edwards suggests two to three times a week is necessary to build a base tan, which nor-mally takes about five sessions. Afterwards, plan on a once per week routine for tan mainte-

nance.. “I also suggest using a tan extending lotion. That really helps, plus keeps you safe from too much UV exposure” One would think that a tanning business generally attracts women almost exclusively, but this is not true. “Oh no, we get a lot of guys in here. I’d say that about forty percent of our clients are men” A prospective tanner must be 16 and a half to tan with parental consent. A recent Texas law increased the age for tanning without parental consent to 18. “A lot of my customers are from the local high schools, but the ages range all over the place. My oldest customer is well into their 70’s” A tanning salon must have their share of odd ball experiences, and Sun Spa Tanning is not immune. “We have some people who seem to like peeing in the trash cans, and it’s generally the females that are doing that! You know who you are, so quit it!” Edwards rebukes. “I’ve had a few creepy dudes ask me to put lotion on their backs. That’s not a service we offer here,” Edwards laughs. “Women don’t usually ask for that to be done for them.” How about sharing the worst experience? “A new customer, a lady, came in to get an air brush tan and we had run out of solution. So, this lady cussed me out. One of my best customers followed her out to her car and told her not to talk to me like that ever again. Expanding the business to additional loca-tions was mentioned, but only recently have the Edwards opened up a second Sun Spa Tanning location. “Before the expansion, I thought about doing a mobile air brush tanning service since our gun is mobile. We’ve gone to weddings, strip clubs and if someone had a spray tanning party. My dad didn’t want me to. If you plan on getting that tan, get one before springtime. Springtime is when wait times are highest for Sun Spa Tanning.

“we have some people who seem to like peeing in the trash cans, and it’s generally the females that are doing that!”

YES, 45 YEARS & BEYOND SQUIRE, HOWE & COMPANY STILL DELIVER THE CLASSICS

MUSIC NEWS & RELEASES

YES are currently preparing to release their first live effort to feature current lead vocalist Jon Davison. Comprised of selections from the rock group’s celebrated studio releases from 1970s, ‘Like It Is: Yes at the Bristol Hippodrome’ will offer dedicated progressive rock followers who weren’t able to catch the current incarna-tion of Yes on tour earlier this year a profes-sionally captured glimpse into how the band performs in the absence of founding frontman Jon Anderson and with the assistance of cur-rent lead vocalist Jon Davison. The effort will be made available on two-CD/DVD, Blu-ray and digital formats starting December 9 via Frontiers Records, and shows the current lineup of Davison, guitarist Steve Howe, keyboardist Geoff Downes, bassist Chris Squire and percussionist Alan White largely running through selections from 1971’s ‘The Yes Album’ and 1977’s ‘Going For the One.’ Included in the feature’s track listing are such numbers as “Perpetual Change,” “Won-

derous Stories” and “Starship Trooper.” “These are two bodies of music that many of the most devout Yes fans wanted to hear in their entirety,” Downes said in a press state-ment announcing the live effort. “I believe our performance at the Bristol Hippodrome was among the most compelling of the entire tour.” Perhaps the only odd quality found on ‘Like It Is’ is that there are no selections from Yes’ latest studio album ‘Heaven & Earth,’ which served as Davison’s studio debut with the band. Pioneers of progressive rock, YES have achieved worldwide success with a history spanning 45 years and 20 studio albums. YES alumni are Jon Anderson, Rick Wake-man, Bill Bruford, Trevor Horn, Trevor Rabin, Billy Sherwood, Tony Kaye, Peter Banks, Patrick Moraz, Benoit David, Oliver Wake-man, Igor Khoroshev and Tom Brislin. The band is known for its expansive songs, esoteric lyrics, elaborate album art and live stage sets.

Owner and head chef April McMahon shares that Skinny Pig Pizza Shack is a concept seven-teen years in the making. The concept’s genesis can be traced back when she had to deal with her own health issues, so she had to change her diet and experienced a 180 degree turn around from where she was. McMa-hon removed all sugar, gluten (flour) including pastas from her diet and experienced a remark-able change. From that her passion for food grew, more than just enjoying the food but for what food can do for your body. How food feeds your body and helps your body repair itself “I catered for many years, worked for athletes and others who have been on the other side of the spectrum like wheelchair-bound folks because of weight issues. I found how food affected those with weight issues, diabetes and celiac.” While McMahon provided private catering, on the side she was thinking about ways to bring this style of food to the public “I began working on recipes for junk food that you can pig out on yet still lose weight and enjoy high nutrition values; no additives, no MSG, no fillers.” McMahon shared. “We grind our own cheese here. We make all our homemade crusts and sauces. In addition, we list all our ingredients on our menu because we feel it’s extremely important that you know what you are taking in to your body and that it’s real nutritious food” Diners comment on how full they get by eating

the food at Skinny Pig Pizza. “I think that it’s because the body takes it all in and pulls the nutrients from real food and you fill up.” Skinny Pig Pizza’s quality offering are high in fiber, high in protein, low in sugar and low in carbohydrates. Everything on their menu is 100% gluten-free. Skinny Pig offerings have no cross contamination which is important for folks who need to eat gluten-free. “There are people who have such a high yeast allergy and intolerance that they can’t eat any gluten-free item simply because of the environ-ment in which it may have been prepared. We prepared all of our food in a strict gluten-free environment.” McMahon is also community-minded, donat-ing certain percentages of her proceeds to organizations that she believes in. Of the nine specialty pizzas offered, the Southern Comfort pizza was preferred by this reviewer. But don’t discount other diner favorites such as the Spicy Pig and the Barbeque Porky. “Our barbeque sauce is sweet with a cookout feel without any of the sugar.” McMahon added. The restaurant’s biggest struggle is awareness. McMahon has been working hard to let people know that they are behind the Doll Hospital in Old Town Spring Plan a visit to them soon. ANNA PINION

Anna Pinion

Dear Anna, Maybe you might be able to help me with a situation I find myself in with the local kids. You see, I’m probably the oldest man in the neighborhood at 61. My wife died a few years back and we had no kids of out own. But these kids, a group of about five of them, walk through my yard, tearing

up my late wife’s flower garden, throwing beer bottles in the yard. I yell at them, and their parents when they walk by, but they just laugh me off. What should I do, I don’t want to move. This was the house I lived with my wife before her passing.- Peeved PeteDear Pete:If you have a local military outlet store, you should go there, buy a dozen or so dud land mines, and start planting them in the front yard. I suggest doing this over a Saturday afternoon when those kids and their parents might be walking by. Say nothing, just whistle

while you dig and laugh a little to yourself. That’ll put the fear of God in them.

Dear Anna, I know you’re not Google, but I bet you have a great answer for this one. Who man-ages ex-Beatle Paul McCartney’s career? - Stones fanDear Stones:I would guess that either his wife or the ghost of John Lennon dictates what he does in his career choices.

Dear Anna, I am a 17 year old being raised by a single mom who is never here. Instead, she’s out partying and clubbing every night and I rarely get see her. My dad left us when I was little so going to live with him is probably not going to happen. I really want to have a relationship with my mom. I graduate high school next May and don’t want to miss getting to really know her. What should I do? - Desperate in Montrose. Dear Montrose:You don’t need a relationship. What you need is a fake ID.

HOUSTON – Homeowners want to downsize for several reasons – to lower electricity bills, provide easier maintenance, or they may simply no longer need the extra square footage. While the space may be smaller, members of the Greater Houston Builders Association’s Custom Builders Council say expectations are still big – there is still a high demand for luxury, regardless of size. Adam Sprouse of Sprouse House Custom Homes said a few recent projects demonstrate exactly how a small room can really shine. In one example, a powder bathroom became a jewel case for a giant amethyst geode imported from South America. The gem was transformed into a sink in a concrete countertop and backlit with LED lights. Another challenge Sprouse faced was when a client wanted to create a statement with about a 10-foot by 10-foot area of space. “They wanted a space-efficient way to provide extensive wine storage that would also be beautiful and stunning,” he said. The builder excavated 12 feet underground, pouring a deep concrete cellar and installing a unique fixture imported from the U.K. The circular underground wine cellar is accessed through a glass hydraulic door in the floor of the house, lit by LEDs that reflect in three large gothic mirrors hanging on the back wall. “The whole thing just glows,” he said. The walls in the space are covered in a river stone pebble finish, and a large piece of salvaged wood serves as a corking ledge. Reclaimed wood and iron doors were sandblasted and stained to offer an even more dramatic entrance. “The conventional use of space is changing, because at the end of the day people want different things,” Sprouse said. Clients who want to downsize still want big style, he said. And thanks to DIY television shows and resource-laden HOUZZ and Pinterest, they tend to be very savvy about exciting new designs and

finishes. “There are a lot of cool products available now,” Sprouse said. “It can be overwhelming to have so many options.” James Cook, custom sales manager at Bison, a Stock Building Supply Company, said builders can serve as a trusted guide in a world of choices for high-end finishes. “Small spaces are becoming very high-end and luxurious,” he said. “People are putting in finer furnishings, fancy cabinets and high-end hardware.

It really makes those spaces pop.” Homeowners may consider implementing barrel ceilings or high-end paint finishes to set a small space apart, he said, adding that builders also are using available square footage wisely. For example, there are a number of products that can take ad-vantage of wasted closet space – whether it’s extra cabinets or pull-down bars for seasonal wardrobes. Stephen Hann, owner of Hann Custom Homes, agrees that closets are one area that tends to stay large – even if a house is small. “Women are creat-ing private space inside a closet. It’s a little retreat,” he said. “The same features of large homes are popular in small spaces,” Hann said, “including tall ceilings, fine moldings, high-end finishes and open spaces. It gives you all the same feeling – but with a smaller product.” In some cases, homeowners may get rid of the dining room in favor of more seating in the kitchen, or forgo a formal living room in favor of a larger den, Hann said, but they still want a wine cellar – just on a smaller scale. “Wine cellars have not gone away,” he said. “But they might be more intimate. It isn’t about having room for thousands of bottles, but instead just having a small cool space with a bistro table where people can sit and enjoy a glass.” Homeowners have to consider their lifestyle and figure out their priorities for the space they have, Hann said. “It’s very possible to downsize and not miss the space,” he said. “You also won’t miss the taxes or the upkeep.” The Greater Houston Builders Association’s Custom Builders Council is a unique resource of-fering professionals who are not only familiar with the latest trends, but can offer guidance for any type of custom home. The Council serves as a ready resource for individuals who are considering buy-ing, building, or remodeling and offers a valuable referral network of reputable custom builders who uphold the highest standards in the field.

Texas law allows a sales tax exemption on the purchase of equipment necessary for the production of master recordings for sale or distribution. Purchases of new sound reinforcement equipment, or upgrades to existing equipment, are eligible if the venue makes master record-ings during each show, then makes copies that are sold or offered for ultimate sale to the public. Recordings can be made from the mixing board very inexpensively - usually with a laptop, or even an iPad or iPhone. The recordings would be offered for sale via the venue’s website, Facebook or YouTube page, or ideally to the artist free of charge with an unlimited license to sale. While it benefits the venue to have high quality recordings for promotion or licensing,

a low quality master from which copies repro-duced and sold would still be in compliance with the rules for exemption. A live music venue that does not record a master of every performance and sell the re-production of the performance would be liable for divergent use of the qualifying equipment purchased tax free. “Divergent use” means the use of property in a manner or for a purpose other than the purpose that qualified the sale of the items for exemption. Sales tax is due on the value of the item for any period the item is used in the divergent manner (i.e., creating master recordings that will be sold). The value of a qualifying exempt item is the fair market rental value of the exempt item, which would be the amount the purchaser would pay on the open market to rent or lease the item for his use.
