LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

As I write, the unofficial start of the summer season is upon us, along with the first real wave of visitors for Memorial Day festivities and beach going.

There’s always something fun and interesting going on for locals and tourist alike here in Sandbridge. Our summer months are always buzzing with activities. Our beach lifeguard services have started and there will also be an increased police presence. Please drive with safety in mind as congestion on our roads is just a way of life during the summer.

Our beautiful Sandbridge has many pressing issues at hand. One issue is the inevitable sand build-up encroaching on many oceanfront homes. This is creating various hazards and dangers. Our community is working with city officials to find solutions to streamline the process to remove the sand and keep it from invading our pools, yards and homes.

The Beaches and Waterways Commission is charged with finding acceptable solutions to the issues of Event Homes in our eclectic beach community. Thanks to local resident Tom Fraim for his efforts, as it is not an easy task. The commission has a 120-day time frame to submit its findings to city officials. A public forum will also be held for your comments. As always, I will keep you advised.

During the last SBCL meeting we had another grandson born at 10:08 a.m. It was really hard to stay for the meeting and not welcome him into the world until the afternoon. It took dedication to not leave the meeting. He is so precious and joins the rest of the adorable grandchildren. Welcome Luke!

While our visitors have to set a vacation time to visit Sandbridge, all of us locals are fortunate to have a holiday on a daily basis. A sense of community would be beneficial as we move towards solving problems. Very few people, if any, can create anything amazing alone. Let’s support each other!

President Joan Davis called the meeting to order at 10:30a.m.

Fred Greene said a few words of praise for Charles Learned and led us in The Pledge of Allegiance.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE: Janet Meyer - The nominating committee of 11 members of the SBCL met on April 27, 2016 to come up with a slate of officers for the 2016-17 year. Every member was given a chance to nominate a member of his or her choice for each position. After discussion of each position and candidates, a vote was taken. The following is the slate for the upcoming year: President - Joan Davis, Vice President - Cheryl Caloras, Secretary - Kay Scafone, Treasurer - Tim Ferramosca and Directors - Jane Stilley and Emily Palmer. Members nominated from the floor included the following: President – Susan Sadowski nominated by Don Ashby, Vice President - David Watson nominated by Joan Rose, Secretary- Heather Malaby nominated Donna Watson, Treasurer - Cathy Miller nominated by Cheryl Petticrew and Director - Herb Jones nominated by Ginny Maniscalco.

The ballots for the election will be in the next newsletter with voting and mailing instructions. A motion was made by Joan Rose "To facilitate the counting and authenticating of completed ballots for the election of the 2016 Sandbridge Civic League [sic] Officers and Board of Directors, I move the ballots be numbered prior to being mailed to the membership." The motion was voted down overwhelmingly.

David Whitley introduced guest speaker Jim Lang, environmental attorney, to discuss efforts to develop a sand management plan for Sandbridge Beach. At the end of his presentation, David Whitley made the following motion: a resolution calling on the City Council of the City of Virginia Beach to issue an emergency declaration authorizing the residents of oceanfront properties in Sandbridge to remove sand in certain situations.

The motion was approved overwhelmingly by the membership.

Vice President Cheryl Caloras introduced our next guest speaker, Delegate Barry Knight, who gave us updates relating to Sandbridge Beach.

BUSINESS MEETING: The minutes from the April meeting were approved as written in the newsletter. Treasurer Tim Ferramosca was out of town, but he will have the treasury report to present next month, and this month's report will appear in the newsletter.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

BACK BAY: Bob McMillin - Bob has been in contact with Brandon Woodruff, Game and Inland Fisheries, and Robert Harris, Delta Waterfowl. Mr. Harris will check out the abandoned duck blinds in the next few days. He will then call Bob for assistance with removing the poles that have been marked. Bob needs volunteers to help with this project.

BEAUTIFICATION: Greta Stallings - Greta passed out a picture of a proposed design for our water tower. She still does not have a price for the painting but says it will be an expensive project. We will have fundraisers to help finance this project. Joan said she would send out a picture of the proposed design for everyone to see, and then they can send in comments or suggestions for

the water tower design. Greta also asked if anyone has a flag pole to donate for the flag she bought for Memorial Day that will be displayed in the beautiful gardens that everyone sees entering Sandbridge Beach.

EVENT HOMES: Walt Hunter - The committee will hold its next meeting on Friday, the day after the Beach and Waterways Commission meeting. The committee continues to work toward understanding the issues, identifying possible solutions and crafting a recommendation for the civic league board and membership.

MEMBERSHIP: Charlie Ellin – Presently, we have 866 household memberships. Please renew your membership if it is set to expire June 30. Renewals can be made for more than one year at a time.

MEMORIAL DAY PARADE: Judy Donahue - The parade will start at 10 a.m. on Memorial Day and end at Wood Duck with hot dogs and cookies.

INFRASTRUCTURE/PUBLIC ACCESS WAYS: Bill Price - Porters Island and Bass are the next two access ways to be done. Hopefully, they will be started this fall.

BLOOD DRIVE: Fred Greene - Another successful blood drive—we had 36 donors.

ROAD PAVING AND REPAIR: Susan Sadowski - The repairs to Shad Lane have been completed, and the work on Whiting should start in the next couple weeks.

FIREWORKS: Bill Price - Bill found someone new to do the fireworks this year, and this time they will be accompanied by music! He is trying to keep our fireworks from being advertised since we have no more room for parking or places for people to sit or stand to watch the fireworks.

NEW BUSINESS: A motion was made to put the crime report into the newsletter and passed with a majority vote.The next SBCL meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 20 at the Sandbridge Community Chapel.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:28 p.m.

It’s that time again! We’ve had a great run and we hope to keep it up this year. The annual response to our July 4 fireworks has been wonderful. In fact, if our donations meet or exceed the levels we have collected the last three years, we won’t have to collect any next year! So keep it up, folks!

We have a new provider this year and he promises that we’ll have musical accompaniment. We hoped to have it last year but the threat of rain ruined our plans. Speaking of rain, the city is not allowing us, or any of the other localities, to have a rain date. So, it’s July 4 or nothing, I’m sorry to say.

So, the sign is up, the committee is open for business, and now it’s up to you!

PETER GALANIDES

Peter Demetrios Galanides passed away peacefully on May 16 at the age of 89. His wife Mary, the love of his life, was at his side. Only mortality

could have parted their union of over 65 years, filled with love for each other and their family. Upon graduating from Maury High School, Pete served a tour of duty with the U.S. Army, stationed at West Point. Pete was a 1950 Phil Beta Kappa graduate of the University of North Carolina. It was in North Carolina that he met, married and devoted his life to Mary Stefanou. Upon graduation he joined the family business of Galanides Inc. Pete was a member of Atlantic Lodge #2 as well as a Shriner. He also served on a number of local boards including Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, AHEPA, Sertoma Club of Norfolk, Norfolk Community Services Board, The Tidewater Association for Retarded Children, and North American Foodservice Corporation.

Pete is survived by wife Mary, son Peter Jr. and his wife Elaine, daughter Stephanie, son Jerry, and five grandchildren.

Pete and Mary raised their family in Norfolk, but also packed them in a station wagon and travelled the U.S. and Europe. They maintained friendships in Sandbridge and across land and sea.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to Saint Mary’s Home for Disabled Children, the Sandbridge Volunteer Rescue Squad or a charity of your choice.

PAT SINCLAIR

Longtime Sandbridge resident Patricia Hawkins Sinclair passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 16 at the age of 84.

She was a retired school teacher having taught at Parish Day School in Virginia Beach for over 30 years.

Pat was a graduate of Lane High School in Charlottesville, Virginia. She attended Mary Washington College and was a graduate of the University of Virginia. She was a member of St. Simon’s Episcopal Church in Sandbridge.

Pat was a lifelong reader, teacher, excellent cake baker and wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Having lived in Sandbridge for 41 years, she was also a wonderful neighbor and friend, according to Sandbridge Beach Civic League President Joan Davis.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 64 years, Bill Sinclair, two daughters, two sons, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Butterfly Fund for Parish Day School at Eastern Shore Chapel or St. Simon’s Episcopal Church in Sandbridge.

CMDR RONALD ROSS MEARDY, USN, RETIRED

Ron loved Sandbridge! Though he traveled the world and his country, Sandbridge and Virginia Beach were home. Ron and his wife Selena purchased a lot (with a driveway) in Sandbridge in 1964, after the Ash Wednesday Storm of 1962 washed away a house (they heard was the shape of a glass

boat). Ron brought his family out on a regular basis to visit the lot and enjoy the beach and ocean. He had dreams of building a house on the land, but others thought his idea to build in the middle of nowhere was a bit crazy. Their home was built in the early 70’s. Daughter Amber and son Ronald enjoyed swims in the ocean with their dad (who often swam a mile at a time), playing on the beach and riding to the Sandbridge Market, in particular to make money from bottles left by construction workers.

Ron was a professional boxer at age 15. He also played baseball at Granby High School and continued to play in the Navy. Later in life, he earned his bachelor’s degree, magna cum laude, from Virginia Wesleyan in 18 months.

Ron enjoyed a long and successful career in the United States Navy, enlisting in 1950 at the age of 18. He started his Navy life as a seaman on the USS Monterey (CVL-26) and rose to the rank of Commander, capping his career at the Submarine Board of Inspection & Survey Atlantic. He was especially proud of his status as a Navy Mustang and cherished the motto - “I did it the hard way…I earned it!” During his three-plus decades as a Navy sailor, Ron served onboard nine different ships and two amphibious units, exemplifying the Navy creed that sailors belong on ships, and ships belong at sea. He served three tours in Vietnam, including command of the USS Krishna ARL-38. During his career, Ron received many medals, including the Meritorious Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon and Navy Unit Commendation.

Ron passed away on March 21, with loved ones by his side. He is survived by his wife, Selena; daughter, Amber; and a grandson and step-grandson.

Over the years, many people enjoyed Sandbridge because of Ron. He was always a welcoming host and he, along with many others, left footprints in the sand.

BIOBLITZ AT THE BACK BAY NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGEBy Jane Stilley

It was a day of hiking and exploring the rich natural history of the Refuge during the BioBlitz on April 23. Among the events, The Joy of Photography workshop led by nature photographer Fred Devan. Fred taught us how to sharpen our skills as we photographed birds, snakes and the scenic landscape of the Back Bay and beyond. Fred is an enthusiastic, hands-on instructor, chock full of ideas on how to capture even the most elusive of critters. DAVID WATSON I have been a member of SBCL for eight years. My career has been exclusively supporting Federal contractors in negotiating contracts and resolving disputes. This experience, coupled with being on the board of a Richmond condo association, provides me with the background and knowledge to tackle the SBCLs toughest issues.

The 3rd Annual Sandbridge Charity Open Golf Tournament featured a plethora of highlights, especially one of the few warm, sunny days of an otherwise inclement spring.

Sponsored by Siebert Realty, the tournament benefited the Sandbridge Rescue Squad in honor of Dick Jones and the Breanne C. Mahon Foundation in honor of John Mahon. The perfect weather yielded some very low gross scores as well as scores of other highlights.

The team of Dennis Lawheed (captain), Ken Dietrich, Ken Icenbice and Bob Wilson posted a fabulous net score of 55 (17 under par!) in the four-man captain's choice format on the challenging Hell's Point Golf Course.

Three teams finished three shots behind with net scores of 58. Those teams were captained by Joe Brady (also featuring Mark Torchia), Damien Thayer (also featuring Russ Carmichael, Trevor Connors and Jeff Marburger) and Tom Becker (also featuring Eric and Adam Becker).

Leeha Keenen won the Ladies' Closest to the Pin with an excellent tee shot on No. 4. On the men's side, Mike Wood took honors in the Closest to the Pin on No. 15 while Cary Shreve uncorked the longest drive on No. 16.

With lunch provided by Pungo Pizza and dinner catered by the Sandbridge Island, the perfect weather, the excellent golf and the money raised for such worthy charities combined to form the perfect spring outing.

RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVEDonors from Sandbridge and beyond turn out in large numbers to give the gift of life on May 12. Thirty-six pints of blood once again exceeded our goal! A big thanks to our volunteers and to the American Red Cross.

It is Memorial Day Monday, May 30, 2016, and also two days before my 72nd birthday. Years ago, when I was growing up, Memorial Day was always celebrated on May 30th, but now it is celebrated on the last Monday of the month of May, whatever the date might be, and forms a three day weekend. As a child in elementary, junior high, and high school, I usually had a birthday party at our summer beach cottage at Sandbridge on Memorial Day since schools were always closed for that holiday. My friends would pile into cars, driven by parents, and head from our home in the Portlock section of South Norfolk to our little two bedroom cinderblock cottage on the west side of Sandfiddler, north and not far from the end of Sandbridge Road. We would always have hot dogs, potato chips, soft drinks and, of course, birthday cake and ice cream. Also, we would usually have more than one guest get sunburned. We didn’t have sunscreen then. My mom would make me put Noxema on my nose and…she’d make me wear a hat. It feels nostalgic to me when Memorial Day falls on the 30th and I

usually want to eat hot dogs and, maybe, have a birthday cake…with candles…even though it is…two days “before” my 72nd birthday. That’s a lot of candles and…a lot of fond memories of Sandbridge Beach Memorial Day festivities. This year it has been raining most of the day, but Saturday was sunny and hot and our neighborhood was bulging with people enjoying the beach and celebrating the holiday weekend. There were at least 20 people in the checkout line, constantly, at the Sandbridge Seaside Market. Yards were packed with parked cars, evidence of lots of parties going on. In the afternoon, south Sandpiper Road was backed up all the way from Whiting Lane and I heard it took forever to go east or west on busy, busy Sandbridge Road. All of the houses around me are occupied. I love seeing my neighbors return. There is an excitement in the air. Summer has begun!
