Topics include cognition, emotion, memory, neural physiological mechanisms, human sexuality, learning, stress, child development, and psychological disorders. Psychology is generally divided into experimental and applied areas. Experimental psychologists conduct research, publish theories into psychology journals and textbooks, and teach at institutions of higher education. Applied psychologists use psychology principles and theories to areas such as therapy, school psychology, sports, and industrial settings. Obtaining an associate degree in psychology is a great way to get a head start in your career, work toward a bachelor’s degree, or do both at the same time. All psychology courses offered fulfill general education requirements for Allan Hancock College and California State Universities, and are transferable to the University of California system. English 101 and Math 123 are prerequisites for some psychology courses, and you should complete them early in your college career. Psychology Program Allan Hancock College strives to provide quality educational opportunities to a diverse student population in the field of psychology. The program prepares students to transfer to four-year universities, as well as provides background study to a diverse range of private and public sector employment opportunities.

The college offers an associate degree and an associate degree for transfer (ADT) in psychology. The ADT requires completion of 60 transferable semester credits and guarantees admission with junior standing into the California State University system. The ADT provides priority admission consideration to the student’s local CSU campus, and to a program or major that is similar to the psychology degree earned at Allan Hancock College.

Employment Opportunities: Graduates of the Allan Hancock College psychology degree program can look forward to continuing their education and pursuing careers in a variety of fields.

An associate degree might prepare students for careers such as:

• Counselor

• Clinical Psychologist

• Behavior Analysis Therapist

• Mental Health Case Manager

• Substance Abuse Counselor

• Clinical Research Coordinator

• Psychology professor

Note: Psychology courses are also required or beneficial to other degrees and fields of study such as social work, nursing, emergency medical services, education, businesses, and early childhood studies.
