A glimpse of the PSS (Pipeline Survey System)

The PSR StoryOn 24th August, 2007, a call was receivedby the M.D. of DSI, a company formed byyoung engineers, enquiring about a camerasystem that can be used for pipelinesurveys. Perceiving it as an interestingopportunity, the requirement analysis wasentrusted to the lead engineer, Mr. Udit

Agrawal. The client was Aarsleff Michiganwho were facing problem with the CCTVsurvey work of the pipelines contracted tothem for re-habilitation by DJB.

On 5th September, 2007, about 10 dayslater than the initial meeting DSI performeda successful test run of the first prototypeof what would become India’s firstindigenously developed pipeline surveysystem. But this was not easily achieved.

After meeting the first success, it wasrealized that due to harsh conditions inwhich the machine has to work the

seemingly easy task for our roboticsengineers had become an extremelychallenging proposition.

The designers of the machine were facedwith the arduous task of surveying theirclient premises while also studying thepractical problems and other issues on thesite and fixing the design overnight or evenon the site itself to prevent losses to theircustomers since no R&D time was

available. Despite all odds, DSI engineersdelivered India’s FIRST PSR (PipelineSurvey Robot) in November (in less thantwo months).

Since then the machine has had severalrevisions. The current model of themachine code name “Bunny ” is a stable,configurable and rugged robot, capable ofefficiently completing the tasks it is set for.
