WINSTON CHURCHILL-1941 BY YOUSUF KARSH

“By the time I got back to my camera, he looked so belligerent, he could have devoured me. It was at that instant that I took the photo-

graph.” –Yousuf Karsh

In the wake of the attack on pearl harbor, Churchill arrived in Ottawa,

to thank the allies for their assistance.

Unaware that a photographer had been commissioned to take his portrait he refused to remove his cigar. Once the photographer was set up he walked towards Churchill, removed the cigar from his mouth and took his famous photograph with the scowl. Of the inci-

dent, Churchill told Karsh “You can even make a roaring lion stand still to be photographed.”

This image is one of the most widely reproduced political portraits. It gave photographers permis-

sion to take more honest, and even critical, portraits of political leaders

Night Photography

Assignment to be shown at the January 24th meeting

By Frank Oliveri

Night photography is a subject of various techniques and approaches. It would require an entire book to cov-er the entire subject. Since I am restricted to two pages, I’ll have to be brief.

For the purpose of this write-up, “Night Photography” can be any photograph taken just after sunset and pri-or to sunrise.

Some categories to choose from are: 1. Stars & Moon as subjects

2. Cityscapes

3. People at Night

4. Patterns and shadows created by artificial light

Whichever category you choose, plan ahead. Scout out the location so you can assess the environment and problems you may encounter

Which ever category you choose, there are fundamentals that have to be considered;

1. Be mentally preparedBe mentally preparedBe mentally preparedBe mentally prepared to spend much time getting your shot. It’s not a point and shoot assign-ment.

2. Use a Tripod. This cannot be stress enough. In fact, as your photography skills grow, you will find

that it is almost impossible to live without a tripod.

3. Learn the manual se%ngs on your camera. Know what shuer speed, aperture, and ISO you have

to choose to get the ideal exposure for the subject maer..

4. Use a shu)er release cable. This will help with the camera vibra#on. Wireless remotes or the cam-

era’s built in #mer are other op#ons.

5. Use the mirror lockup func-on. Mirror flip-up causes vibra#on in the camera and can lead to blurry

photos. Mirror lockup reduces camera vibra#on.

6. A head mounted flashlight – Used for viewing you camera settings.

7. A high intensity portable light – Used to light foregrounds and for light painting.

8. An off-camera flashgun. A variation of 7 above -This is used to light a dark foreground

and to light people in the foreground.

If you’re new to this type of photography, it’s going to take a few night shoots to get to know which cam-

era se)ngs are best for the situa#on. For example, if you’re shoo#ng an urban scene with moving vehicles,

you need a slow shuer speed to capture the moving lights as streaks in a sta#onary background. If you’re

shoo#ng fireworks or a starry night, you might use a “bulb” se)ng (on a tripod of course). The required

camera and ligh#ng variables are almost endless. If you have it, use the RAW se)ng format. This provides

the most informa#on in your file, which allows greater la#tude in the final image.

P S O C N E W S

The following subjects are just a few you might consider:

urban traffic, nighttime street festivals, well lite fountains, OC Fair at night, the desert away from city lights

for starry heavens shots, Christmas lights and decorations, well lite buildings and monuments.

For beginners, don’t become discouraged with your first attempt. Keep shooting. Don’t hesitate to experiment.

“Film” is now cheap.

I suggest you look up the many tutorials on the subject to get a more in-depth knowledge on how to set up for

a particular situation. Just Google “Night Photography”.

And finally - Don’t be a Couch Potato. Go Out and Give it a Try

OverviewOverviewOverviewOverview

The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa, Southern California’s historic AAA-Four Diamond ho-tel, officially kicks off the holiday season on November 23, 2018November 23, 2018November 23, 2018November 23, 2018 with its 26th Annual “Festival of LightsFestival of LightsFestival of LightsFestival of Lights” celebration. It’s a free, six-week-long holiday extravaganza, featuring one of the nation's largest holiday light collections of its kind. The “Festival of Lights” is an annual gift to the community from property owners Duane and Kelly Roberts who saved the historic hotel from destruction in 1992.

The beloved Southern California tradition, recently named “Best Public Lights Display in the Nation” by USA Today, creates a magical, Disneyland-like experience in the heart of Riverside, and attracts more than 500,000 visitors from all over the world each year. It commences with the famous “Switch-On” Ceremony, a spectacular event in which the castle-like hotel is instantly illuminated with 5 million holiday lights, followed by a full fire-

works display.

Highlights of the “Festival of Lights” includes 200 animated figures including angels, elves and Dickens carolers; appearances by Santa Claus, the world’s largest man-made mistletoe, horse-drawn carriage rides, elf tuck-ins, freshly fallen snow, elaborately deco-rated Christmas trees, and delectable holiday confections at the famous Casey’s

Cupcakes (among other festive offerings).

DEATH VALLEY FIELD TRIP

Our PSOC club trip to Death Valley is scheduled for four nights rather than the traditional three nights. We will be staying in Beatty, NV. It is a 45 minute drive from Beatty to the Stovepipe Wells area of the Valley. The room costs in Beatty are about a third of the cost of rooms in the valley itself. We have reserved 25 rooms at the Stagecoach Motel and Casino, 900 Highway 95, Beatty at a discounted rate of $70.85 per night, tax included. To make your room reservation call the motel at 1 (775) 553-2419 identifying yourself as being with the Photographic Society of Orange County. The motel is holding this block of rooms for PSOC only until January 27 and then any unreserved rooms will be released to the public.

We are planning a BYOB welcome reception on Wednesday evening. Feb 27, at the motel. We will have some of our members who have experience photographing Death Valley sta-tioned at the reception for you to gather maps, information and first hand knowledge of where and when to get your prize winning photographs. Also, we are scheduling a group luncheon on Friday, March 1, somewhere on the valley floor (location yet to be booked). That leaves the early morning and late afternoon open for photo outings. We will have AAA maps of Death Valley available for you soon. Also, some areas of the Park are difficult to reach with passenger cars, so we will have Jeep rental information for those who want to venture in to the hills. Here is a link to a website that will give you some idea of what there is to photograph -

https://photographylife.com/what-to-photograph-in-death-valley. And we are developing

additional reference material for you and will have that available in the near future.

Lightroom Class taught by Barry Evans

Barry Evans has agreed to offer a comprehensive class on Lightroom to PSOC members.

The class will be held over three Thursday evenings from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM beginning in January:

January 31. Class will cover the Library Module, which allows you to bring images

from cameras, memory cards and other folders into a central sorting and storage point.

Keyword and Meta Data tagging allows you to mark your images with easily recog-

nized information allowing for painless retrieval of the images at a later date. You will

learn how to set up Lightroom and use it in a very organized way.

February 7. Class will cover the Develop Module, teaching you effective ways to

develop and process your images in an efficient and creative way. Barry will include

both basic instruction and advanced ideas on the use of all the controls in this module.

February 14. Class will cover the Printing Module, showing you how to prepare

images for printing on your own printer and how to prepare an image for printing by a

commercial printing lab. You will learn how to manage color profiles and how to

optimize your image for these printing mediums.

The cost for the class is $50 for all three classes or $20 per class if you choose only one or

two modules. This is a real bargain as Lightroom classes usually cost three or four times that

amount.

Reservations and pre-payment will be required.

Checks should be made out to Barry Evans. We will send this announcement out to all

members via email.

Edit My Photo! is back for our November LENS Meeting. This has been popular over the past several years, and was originally created by Jon Zich. You’re getting this invitation well in advance of the November 8th LENS meeting to give you plenty of time to participate. I expect this year’s project will be another great success! By way of explanation, if this idea is new to you, “Edit My Photo!” is an exercise where our PSOC members perform post-processing edits on the same photos—but not necessarily their own pho-to! Using your own tools, techniques, and interpretation, you work on someone else’s original, un-edited photo, and create a final product based on your own esthetic. It may be as simple as trying to rescue a poorly exposed or composed image, or it could be a more complex edit of the image “requiring” a more creative application of your editing skills. The real fun culminates in our Novem-ber LENS meeting review of everyone’s submission of their work…it’s not only fun to see how oth-ers approached the same photo, but, for the original photographer, it’s particularly fun to see your image through other people’s eyes. So how do we start? If you plan to attend the November 8th LENS meeting, then you are invited to submit to me one or two images for consideration for this effort. Your criteria should be to sub-mit a photo you liked but just didn’t know how to approach with your editing, or you can choose a photo that you find interesting and think others will enjoy working on. I don’t want your finished product - I want your original, unedited file. If you shoot JPG, send me your JPG file…if you shoot RAW, send me your RAW file (in the club's standard JPG size/format). This is NOT a contest on how great your photograph is, so don’t sweat that - this is an exploration of post-processing possi-bilities, and more specifically, the creativity and variety of interpretations that are possible. Once I have I received photos from everyone, I will then come up with a half dozen or so images that I think would be the most interesting and fun to work with. At that point, I will then send out an-other email to you with a link to review the image choices so you can download those that you wish to work on. You can choose to work on as few or as many of the photos as you want. The timeline looks like this… So in Summary: 1) If you want to participate in the November 8th LENS meeting, and want to submit one or two photos (in the club's standard JPG size/format), email them to me no later than Saturday October 20th. 2) You will receive another email from me by Tuesday, October 23rd with the link to review and download the photos that you’re interested in working on from a Drop Box.

Linda Calkins

PSOC LENS Committee

3) When you are done with your post-processed images, you will submit them back to me via email or Drop Box (in the club’s standard JPG size/format) - the deadline is Thursday, November 1st.

Please let me know if you have any questions. My email is [email protected].

Take care,
