It’s always interesting at this time of year to see

the information coming in regarding the new

launches that are in the pipeline for IFSEC and

Firex. This year it looks like there’s a bit of ‘me

too’ and some ‘me first’ going on…

Over the last year or so, the security industry has really takenon the possibilities that working over a network can bring tothe table. Not only do we have IP CCTV but many aspects of

access control, visitor management, intruder alarms, fire protectionand other disciplines embracing the features and benefits of anetwork. This is why for the previous few IFSEC events we haveseen a rise in the development and launch of new IP-basedsystems all seemingly following the same path and leading theindustry into networking.

This year, we again expected that there would be a host ofnew IP products on show (and there certainly will be judging bythe pre-event promo material) with analogue taking a seat in thebackground. There will be new analogue products at the show, but the marketing material from the manufacturers will leanheavily towards their IP offerings.

When asked recently what I thought would be the main thrustof the event I predicted that the adoption of tablets andsmartphones would see vendors going big on remotemaintenance, set-up and monitoring at IFSEC. And I still believethis will be the case (at the time of writing it is currently threeweeks until the show opens) as for many companies thecombination of a smartphone and the IP-enabled security systemcannot be ignored as a potential source of revenue. In fact take alook at one system reviewed later in this edition (page 57) inwhich our independent reviewers find the array of possiblefeatures and uses extremely impressive.

Much like last year with the ‘apps’ being launched by justabout everyone, this year those yet to add remote functionality totheir technology will do so. However this may well not turn out tobe the story of the event as it appears that HD is just not goodenough for some people.

The security industry is becoming increasingly a part of theconsumer market. As discussed, smartphones and tablets arenow commonplace in the field and the image resolution of CCTVis following in the footsteps of our domestic technology. Therefore it is really no surprise that in an industry still yet tofully grasp the qualities of HD CCTV, there will be some 4Kcameras launched at IFSEC in 2014.

Some might say that this is one step too far/too soon andvendors should let the market try and catch up with technologybefore speeding ahead with new launches, but staying on topand being a pioneer are powerful images for a brand. Whetherinstallers and their customers feel the same way about theirsecurity technology remains to be seen, but each newdevelopment brings new benefits and that is what securityinstallers can sell.

If 4K CCTV generates enough interest over the coming months, then this time next year you know what the ‘me too’ products willbe at the event in 2015.

Fire expert saves the day When Lee Knight saw a lorry on fire as hedrove down the motorway he knew he couldhelp – because he is a Fire ExtinguisherManager and had a van full of equipment.Lee, who works for Wessex Fire & Security, spotted the flames coming out of a skip onthe back of the lorry on the M3 near Fleet inHampshire.

Another motorist flagged down the lorryand Lee pulled in afterwards. The lorry driverhad no extinguisher and was desperatelytrying to move the skip off his vehicle beforethe blaze got out of hand and spread. Luckilyfor him Lee knew exactly what to do and hequickly grabbed three extinguishers from hisvan and leapt into action.

Together with the driver he was able touse the foam extinguishers to completelyextinguish the blaze. Indeed, there was noneed for the fire brigade to attend and acertain disaster was averted.

Incredibly it is the fourth time that Lee hascome to the rescue on the roads to put outfires in vehicles.

Lee said: “I was coming southalong the M3 just before the Fleetturn off when I saw a skip lorry infront of me. One of the skips wason fire and smoke was pouringfrom it, but the driver hadn’tnoticed. A car drove past andsignalled to him and I think thedriver just thought that somedebris had fallen off. When hepulled over and saw the flameshe got into a bit of a panic andstarted trying to get the skip offthe back of the lorry. I had abouta dozen full extinguishers in theback of the van, but we onlyneeded three to put out the fire. Idon’t know how the fire startedbut it might have been thatsomeone had thrown a cigaretteinto it and it gradually ignited thematerial in the skip. It just showsthe benefit of having anextinguisher handy!”

THE BOTTOM LINEThe interview that gets the facts from the top

IN ASSOCIAT ION WITH CSL DUALCOM

This month Simon Bankstalks to Colin Langdown,Managing Director ofChristie Intruder Alarms. The family-run business is one of thelargest independent security systemsinstallers in the UK.

“We have been using Gemini Insight for many months now and are reallyimpressed that with this handy portal, DualCom have given their customerssuch easy access to so much useful data.” SHAN HILL, DIRECTOR, INFERNO FIRE SAFETY & SECURITY SOLUTIONSPlease send your quotes to [email protected]

As strong advocates for apprentices, what advice would youoffer to companies sceptical of this approach?Think about where your business might be if you hadn’t invested inyour future. Taking on apprentices is the same investment but witheven greater returns. By carefully selecting, training and mouldingyoung stars of the future, you can steer them away from the badhabits and working practices that might get picked-up in otherorganisations. It is how we have maintained CIA’s culture of serviceexcellence over all these years.

You have your own research department, how do your customersbenefit from that investment? We offer our customers the very best in security products and servicesand that means keeping up-to-date. But there is a difference betweeninnovation and being on the ‘bleeding edge’ of technology. Too manycompanies start using the latest gadget only to discover problems afterthey have fitted the first fifty. However, if you find the right product andbecome one of the pioneers, you will set yourself up to be a leaderand expert in a very competitive market. After all Simon it was you andI that fitted the very first DualCom back in 1996!

As one of the UK’s largest regional installers, what has kept youat the top for almost four decades? There are three groups of people that we never take for granted, ouremployees, our suppliers and our customers. Our greatest asset is theteam we have at CIA and I am so proud to work with each and everyone. Building long term relationships with suppliers, paying them ontime and collaborating on new ideas means they will always look afterus when we need their support. Finally, never underestimate theimportance of excellent customer service. We always go that extramile!

Does your choice of products help to sustain the profit marginwithin your business?A product that repeatedly fails will mean you either lose your profit orlose your customer! Selecting the right product will give you thechance to be more profitable on the installation but also gain valuablerecurring revenue streams and repeat business. Most importantly it’snot just about the product itself, but the company behind it.

What do you predict will be the next ‘big thing’ in security andwhy? We are in the security industry so the last thing I want is for someoneto steal our ideas! It’s not about what we install but the skill set of theperson installing it. Therefore I do have a word of caution. With theproliferation of IP within the industry, do IT Professionals really havethe skills and experience to secure a building? Secondly, do SecurityProfessionals have the skills to install IP ready equipment?

YOU SAID IT!

ComNet expands in the UKComNet Europe, a division of ComNet CommunicationNetworks, has expanded operations in the UK, doubling officeand warehouse space in order to meet product demand. Due tothe surge in demand for fibre optic, copper and wirelesstransmission products throughout EMEA, Asia-Pacific andSouth America, the Leeds-based company has expanded bytaking on an additional 3050 square feet to support its efforts.

The additional space will be used for warehousing products, tech support and administration. ComNet recently added newwarehouse and administration employees to support theadditional product volume the company expects to movethrough the facility.

“When we started ComNet in 2009, we were aggressive inplanning our facility needs. We thought the office andwarehouse space we secured would last us for a long time,”stated Steve Clarke, ComNet Europe Managing Director. “Thedemand for transmission products led us to a very high level ofgrowth and the facility became too small, quickly. As a result, when the additional 3050 square feet became available, wetook it. The additional space will be used to warehouse moreproduct to speed up delivery times.”

INTERVIEW

13

This month we talk to Gary Harmer

of Mayflex about growing the

security side of the business and

how installers can introduce

customers to networking their

technology

Gary Harmer is the Director of Sales forElectronic Security at Mayflex. He hasmany years’ experience in the security

industry having spent over 20 years at anothersecurity distributor prior to joining Mayflex inJanuary 2011. Gary is also a Liveryman in TheWorshipful Company of Security Professionals.

How have the last twelve months beenfor you? We’ve had a strong performance over the lastyear for all of the areas of our business; cabling, networking and security. In the security sectorwe have grown our year-on-year turnoversignificantly, largely due to a combination offactors such as continued investment andbringing on-board new brands -we have nowhad a full year of working with Avigilon and lastsummer we launched a new brand calledRazberi.

Having said that about new brands we’recontinuing our development with existingvendor partners such as Axis, Milestone,Mobotix etc and this shows the market that weare not pushing one brand over another, which Ialso think helps improve the businessperformance.

Another important factor is the fact that wedo not have any own-brand technology which isan attraction to installers because they knowthey will get an unbiased opinion from us as wedon’t have a product to push at them that wecan get a higher margin from. This also makesus an attractive option for brands that want toreach the security market via a distributor.

How has the growing move into IPaffected your business? We still have two customer bases, but they aregradually converging into a single set.

In the structured cabling and networking sidewe have the IT-ready communicationscompanies that understand IP, networking, addressing, configuration etc and are moving

into the security sector whereas traditionallythey stayed away from the market as it wasentirely analogue 1volt peak-to-peak on coax.Today much of the security equipment isnetwork-based and they understand thatconcept, although they do need some helpsometimes with system design and productselection. Our history in structured cablingprovides the perfect foundation for an IP basedsecurity solution.

The other half of the customer base is thetraditional security installers who are migratingfrom analogue into IP, making that transitionand looking for a partner to help them. Ourbiggest challenge, as an industry, is theeducation of installers and end-users on thebenefits of IP and how to make a cost-efficienttransition. There are some who think that IP istoo expensive, but if you look at it closely, youcan put together a return on investmentpackage, which we have done on a number ofoccasions. For example, by taking largeanalogue-based perimeter protection designsand re-engineering them to an IP solution, it cansave the installer money on the project.

How long has the company beenoperating in the security market? We have had a security offering for the last eightyears, borne on the back of Mobotix appointingus as their distributor for the UK. The marketgrew for us, with the additions of Panasonic,Bosch and Sanyo, so we recognised that for usto take the next step and develop our service itneeded security industry people to come onboard. Around four years ago the decision wasmade to invest in the sector and bring in thekinds of people with the experience that wasrequired.

I do feel that because we have a backgroundin networking that it helps us deal with thoseinstallers who are looking to move into thesecurity sector. One of the most common piecesof feedback we get from customers is that theychose us because of the associated products wehave as well as our in-house expertise. We havea well-established network support team whichis a bonus for those installers who are notexperienced with IP technology. To further aidthe transition we will continue to lay on free-to-attend seminars and training such as our “IP

ACHIEVING AN ROI WITH IP

“Our biggestchallenge, as anindustry, is theeducation ofinstallers and end-users on thebenefits of IP”

“I don’t see a lot ofmoney going into the

research anddevelopment of

analogue equipment”

CCTV made easy” programmes all of which arepossible because we have that background innetworked technology.

Are there any common areas ofconfusion for installers? There are two points that are raised quiteregularly. First is how to get a return oninvestment with IP. There is a traditional feelingthat IP is more expensive than analoguebecause on a camera-for-camera basis itgenerally is, but it is not until you start toconsider what else you can do with a networkcamera that IP really shows its value. The use ofvideo analytics for example will provide muchmore information to a business than securityand more installers are using this angle toengage with their clients, often seeing budgetsbeing brought in from marketing and brandingdepartments for the project as the benefits gobeyond security purposes.

The other main area that we see trendingamong installers is the need for upskilling theirworkforce. This comes down to us helping themtrain their staff with vendor-sponsoredprogrammes and generic training. Installersneed to invest in their business and so improvedknowledge opens up new areas of opportunityfor them in the market. For example, a realconcern for people making the transition into IPis the awareness surrounding licensing. Onehalf of our customer base, which is theIT/comms people, expects any software productthey use to be licensed and expect an annualmaintenance/support package to be applied, but in the world of analogue CCTV this thinkingdoes not exist. The traditional security installerneeds to understand the licensed model and theaccreditation programmes that manufacturersput in place to ensure that properly qualifiedpeople are installing their brand.

Where are the growth opportunities forsecurity installers? There are a number of areas for growth. Firstlythe licensed model gives the installer theopportunity for recurring revenue which, intoday’s climate, has to be an attractiveproposition. Some end-users recognise thevalue of this service; being kept up-to-date withsoftware and features/benefits etc. For theinstaller to go back to the client with arenewable service that offers the latestdeployment is an added-value benefit for

customers. If you gradually build up yourcustomer base and have recurring revenuecoming in over a period of time you have aguaranteed income before going out on any newwork.

Another area of growth comes in the form ofadditional services on top of video, such asanalytics which provides powerful informationto businesses that they can use. One example isretailers being able to use footfall analysis tosell shelf space in busy locations.

What will the security market look like in

the future?I think analogue technology will be around for anumber of years yet. However, most of themanufacturers are no longer developing newproduct lines in analogue, maybe just tweakingthe cameras and systems they have, but I don’tsee a lot of money going into the research anddevelopment of analogue equipment. Themoney is all being spent on IP systemdevelopment, making the technology easier touse and deploy and also more cost-effective. Infive years’ time I think we will still haveanalogue CCTV systems out there, but lookingat the phenomenal pace of change of the lastthree/four years there is no doubt that we havereached a tipping point. Most manufacturers inthe market say that they are selling more IPthan analogue and we are seeing the same rateof growth in the number of new sign-ups we aregetting.

People are moving towards networkedsystems in various ways. The encoder market ishuge and we sell a lot of those into the marketeach month and part of the education process isthat you don’t have to rip out all of the existingsystem to enable it for IP; you can use thecurrent assets and get a decent return on thatinvestment. The classic example is when a DVRfails, rather than replacing it with a DVR, replaceit with an NVR and use some encoders to bringthe analogue cameras into a network platformand this makes the system future-ready for IP.We find that the smarter installers that arefollowing this route will also install a few 2MP or1080P cameras and the end-user then findssome extra money to upgrade the systembecause they see the difference in picturequality. You don’t have to go in ‘all guns blazing’to introduce customers to IP security.

The security industry is busy and complex, so it’s

easy to miss new products and services as they

get lost in day-to-day activities. Every now and

again, certain products grab our attention so here

we take a look at some of the products we think

you won’t want to miss this month.

Shock detection for perimeter protectionShockTec from Risco is a digital shock detector for 24-hour perimeterprotection. A break-in is detected as soon as the intruder attempts toforce, smash, drill or even saw through the protected window, door, wall or roof due to a digital microprocessor which analyses thevibration signal received from the piezo electric sensor.

A feature of ShockTec 600S is its digital sampling of the signalsimultaneously in two separate channels, each channel amplified at adifferent gain. This provides a wide dynamic range of the sampledsignal, enabling precise measurement and analysis of the shocksignal. For increased accuracy, digital signal processing differentiatesbetween naturally caused vibrations and cuts out frequencies thatcannot be caused by an illegal entry attempt.www.riscogroup.com

Hybrid NVRs added to HD portfolioHoneywell has added hybrid network video recorders (NVRs) toits MAXPRO portfolio of high-definition IP video technology, andhas also introduced HVE video/audio encoders that reportedlyallow installers to easily transition their customers’ analoguecameras to IP. The hybrid NVRs convert analogue feeds to IPwithout replacing analogue cameras, which is ideal for smaller installations thatwant to keep their existing analogue cameras while adding HD IP video to theirsystems. When installed with an existing NVR, the HVE encoders transition the NVRto a hybrid model that supports a mix of analogue and HD IP video.

MAXPRO NVR Hybrid supports simultaneous recording and live monitoring forup to 32 cameras and is compliant with the ONVIF Profile S protocol that enablessystem customisation. Additionally, 360-degree camera support increasessituational awareness and improves coverage, and a video surround feature letsusers track subjects as they move between areas covered by adjacent cameras.Customers can access the system remotely using Honeywell’s web client andMAXPRO Mobile application. The web client is supported from any standard Mac orPC browser and requires no additional install, provides the value of reduced setup, maintenance and improved compatibility. www.honeywell.com/security/uk

Fike – Twinflex ProThe TwinFlex Pro system offers features thatinclude an integrated event log for up to 500events, a key-operated reset option, a range ofdelay functions, a PC set up option, and twoconfigurable monitored outputs that makeTwinFlex Pro easy to use as an upgrade forconventionally wired systems. TwinFlex Pro allowsdetectors and sounders to share the same wiring, reducing installation costs, and it supports theTwinFlex protocol which means that it candiscriminate between alarm signals from automaticdetectors and those from manual call points.www.fikesafetytech.co.uk

Xtralis – VESDAVESDA, described as avery early warningaspirating smokedetection (ASD) system, features continuous airsampling, provides early warning of an impendingfire hazard. VESDA detectors come with multi-levelwarnings and a range of sensitivity that does notdegrade or change over time, so minute levels ofsmoke can be detected before a fire has time toescalate. As a result, they are ideally suited tochallenging environments as well as situationswhere business continuity is imperative.xtralis.com

Klaxon – Sonos PulseSonos Pulse wall mounted Visual Alarm Devicesare available as fire beacons or combined sounderbeacons. With an EN54-23 approved coveragepattern of W-3.5-11.5, each Sonos Pulse wallmounted device can be mounted up to 3.5m highand can cover an 11.5m x 11.5m square room with asingle device thus reducing the number of devicesrequired; most rooms can be protected with oneunit. Installation is quick and simple with mountingand wiring made only to the base, the head clickson to the base during commissioning.www.klaxonsignals.com

Aico – RadioLINK RangeRadioLINK works by allowing multi-sensor,smoke, heat and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms tobe wirelessly interconnected by radio frequency(RF) signals, rather than cabling. The system hasbeen enhanced to allow for remote house codeentry, which can save time and get over accessissues when installing smoke alarms into HMOsand flats. An upgrade to the base now enablesinstallers to add control to mixed hard-wired andRF systems. All that is required to achieve this isreplacing a single base on the hard-wired systemwith a new base. www.aico.co.uk

This year the PSI Golf Day and

Premier Awards is returning to

Brocket Hall near Welwyn Garden

City. Why not come and join us for

the day on 17th July?

This year the PSI Golf Day and the PremierAwards return to Brocket Hall, one of themost intriguing of any of the great houses of

Britain. With a rich and varied history, the scent ofscandal can be found in the fabric of the buildingback to its roots in the 13th Century right up to thepresent day. Brocket Hall, as it is known today, was built by renowned architect James Paine forthe owner Sir Mathew Lamb in 1760. However, theHall stands on the site of two predecessors, theoriginal of which was built in 1239.

One thing that hasn’t changed over thecenturies is the warm welcome that Brocket Hallhas always extended to its visitors. In the 18thCentury, the concept of hotels didn’t really existand large houses were built not only for the familyto live in, but also to give them give them facilitiesfor meeting and entertaining. It is fitting thatBrocket Hall today should once again be used forthis original purpose, and a pleasure for us tooffer such a remarkable venue to our friends andguests for the day.

The Premier Awards Dinner will take placeduring the evening of 17th July, when we willannounce who the winners are of the industry’sonly Awards campaign based on the votes ofsecurity technology installers. Following the mealand presentations there will be after-dinner

entertainment andthe chance tounwind in theluxurioussurroundings ofBrocket Hall.

During the day,the annual PSI Golf

Day will pit the skills of the industry’s golfersagainst each other. With two pristinechampionship golf courses, the renownedpractice facilities of the Palmerston Golf Academyand a charmingly positioned luxury Clubhouse onthe banks of the Broadwater Lake, Brocket HallGolf Club is one of the UK’s most exclusive golfvenues and a fantastic venue for our Golf Day.

For those looking to stay overnight theRegency stately home boasts 30 luxuriousdouble bedrooms, all of which are named afterindividuals who have either lived in or beenclosely associated with Brocket Hall. Its suitesare decorated with period antiques, oilpaintings and beautiful wallpaper. Providingbreath-taking views across the country estate, the luxury accommodation retains aquintessentially British look and feel, whilereaching modern standards, befitting BrocketHall’s international reputation.

We hope you will be able tojoin us at Brocket Hall thisyear for a round of golf, awards dinner or both! For more details on takingpart contact David Lewis on0208 295 8309.

PANEL

PSI is the magazine for security systemsinstallers and it seems only fair that weoffer you the chance to give your opinions

to the market. As a result we have put togetherthe Installer Panel, your platform for tellingmanufacturers, distributors and the widerindustry what you think about certain subjects. This month the Panel looks at the question:What do you think will be the growth area forsecurity installations over the next twelvemonths and how could manufacturers anddistributors help you succeed in this field?

Do you agree with your fellow installers? Letus know.

Gary Trotter –Hadrian TechnologyIn the next twelve months, Ithink the growth areas withinCCTV will be the integrationof video analytics within IPCCTV.

How CCTV footage can be analysed isbecoming more and more important. Newsstories about the hours the police andauthorities spend trawling through footage tofind evidence crop up in the press again andagain. The significance with IP video analyticsis the ability for the end user to intelligentlysearch recordings.

For instance, once the end usersunderstand the full benefit of video analytics, and how much time and cost can be savedthrough using such a tool, this may open thedoor to more people seeing this as a realisticoption.

Security managers, store managers, andloss prevention managers are just some of thepeople who are asked to trawl through CCTVfootage on a regular basis. We need to teachthese individuals and their employers about IPsystems and video analytics. Work smart, nothard, applies to CCTV and these clever toolsmean if you use CCTV correctly, it doesn’t haveto be difficult.

Another area of concern, I believe, needs tobe addressed is the lack of SDK compliancebetween different manufacturers. I believeONVIF compliance is still at a basic level.

Too many times I have had manufacturers inmy office to demonstrate kit, and too manytimes that kit has not been compatible withother manufacturer’s equipment.

I would welcome the new standard of IPCCTV integration to be at an SDK level and thiswould allow installers to have the confidenceto design and install systems without the fearof equipment not being compatible.

Once installers have this confidence Ibelieve IP CCTV and video analytics will

become more mainstream and allow prices tocome down and become a realistic solution forend users with smaller budgets.

Matthew Harrison –CIA Fire and Security Wireless intruder alarms arewithout a doubt the greatestopportunity for growth in thesector over the comingmonths. Wireless technology

in the intruder alarm sector is advancing at aconsiderable pace particularly now that so manylegacy reliability issues have been or are in theprocess of being resolved. Above all else, manufacturers and suppliers can assist bypushing training across the board from sales toengineers. It will support the whole supplychain and be of huge benefit to the clients. Also, rather than the obvious suggestion to

drive down price, for us it would be helpful ifmanufacturers would extend their guarantees, itwill build considerable confidence across theclient base.

Mark Lee – LifelineAlarm SystemsWe are now in a consumerdriven world whereby thepioneering, leading edge, cutting technology that we,the security industry,

introduced nearly two decades ago such asupload/download is now the norm and nothingnew. We are actually falling behind, unless weknow the problem and come up with a solutionbefore the customer is even aware of we aresomehow fallen behind the rest of the world.

Personally I see the introduction of severaluser interface choices becoming ever morepopular.

Firstly the choice of keypad style is key.Consumers are becoming ever more tabletdriven and expect their tablets to do everything. If not, then a tablet style device should offer anumber of solutions. The tablet keypad should

offer at least graphical representations of thezoning of the system, double up as a CCTVmonitor to show who is calling at the door andprovide some user interface to operate a choiceof toggled outputs. Styling is also going tobecome an issue. We recently installed a systemin a luxury property and to say the white plastickeypad stood out as disappointing was anunderstatement.

Secondly systems should start to inform thealarm installer of potential service related issueseven prior to the customer becoming aware. Thiswill allow the installers to become proactive intheir response. Surprising and delighting thecustomer that we are looking out for theirinterests. These can include critical battery levelsof all devices, especially wireless detectors, communication issues, set fails and similar.

To be able to return and revisit customerswith new features, flash upgradeable andenhanced service will provide good potentialgrowth.

Roman Cooper –Allcooper SecurityThe market is looking muchbrighter and the demand forIP CCTV seems to be greaterthan it has been for sometime. We see this area as a

genuine opportunity for customers to eitherupgrade their existing analogue solution, or toadopt a CCTV system for the first time. IP CCTVis producing images of great quality, in aconvenient and energy efficient manner – it isalso is great value for money.

The UK’s appetite for CCTV seems to know nobounds and we find that customers aredelighted with the image quality they aregetting, plus the remote access capability ismaking it easier to access their live andrecorded images are bringing CCTV up to date.

In terms of what manufacturers anddistributors can do to help the industry, verysimply, when they produce a camera, they needto not only provide a pdf of what the cameralooks like, they should produce some footage ofwhat the camera performs like in a variety oflighting conditions. This way, customers can seeexactly the image quality they are getting fortheir money and can make an informed choiceabout which type of image quality is suitable fortheir needs.

Other than this, we are finding thatdistributors are generally very efficient, hungryfor the business and keen to support us.

TRAINING

Is it time you brushed up on yourknowledge? In an increasinglycompetitive environment, it is vitalfor installers to make sure they areable to work with networks andother developments that are thefuture of security systems

Over the last few years we have discussedon numerous occasions how the UKinstaller knowledge base in regard to IP is

one of the driving factors in the take up ofnetworked technology, and is one of the reasonsbehind the rate of migration. But this slower thanpredicted take-up does not mean that the futureof security is not network based, which couldleave those who are IP-phobic behind.

While younger generations of people cominginto security installation are IT savvy and ITintegrators are also looking at signing up securitycontracts, the outlook for the traditionally-minded, analogue-focused installer could beviewed as shaky so training to a good standard isthe way forward.

These days it is known as ‘upskilling yourworkforce’ rather than training, possibly due tothe fact that many do believe that the threat fromthe IT integrator side of the market is puttinginstallers in a situation where they have to dosomething about the education of their operativesor face an uncertain future. In a security worldwhere the installer is constantly playing catch-upwith the developments hitting the market frommanufacturers, upskilling is vital.

For example if you have not yet got to gripswith IP, then you cannot offer your customers thebenefits of networked technology such as higherdefinitions (although there are HD alternativesusing analogue) and analytics (again, althoughthere are alternatives) but you can bet that youwon’t be future-proofing your installations. Howmany manufacturers will be making a 4Kanalogue camera? How many installations willspecify analogue ten years from now? In the worldof CCTV it is time to make sure that you and yourteam know how to fit IP.

Fortunately IP CCTV is not as tricky to install asit has been in the past, with true plug-and-playsystems now on the market you don’t alwaysneed to be sorting out IP addresses, but a goodunderstanding of the licensing side of things isrequired as well as bandwidths and networks.

In other sectors of the security market thetechnology developments have not slowed downeither, and in the majority of these developmentsa network is also involved. Remote access has

become a common factor of alarm systems andequipment offering remote maintenance and set-up are not unique. Talking to PSI a while backDennis Smith, Video Training Manager for Pelcoby Schneider Electric told us that learning is vitalfor business development:

“Up-skilling a company’s workforce is vital forbusiness growth, as well as professionaldevelopment of the employees,” he says. “Byoffering them training, it is possible to increasetheir productivity, maximise efficiency, as well asgrow their confidence. Through good training anda solid understanding of how IP integrates withsecurity, they will also be able to specify moreaccurately, thus optimising equipment.

“We believe that IP training is becoming crucialacross all industries and installers will beexpected to have at least a basic understanding ofhow video is integrated into a network, whilebeing able to accurately install and maintain it.We hope that by gaining a basic understanding ofIP networks, installers will be encouraged to seekfurther information, continually improving theirknowledge of this complex subject.”

In terms of where the future lies, Dennisbelieves that traditional integrators have threeoptions; they can train themselves or theirworkforce and accept that this will take time awayfrom their usual day to day activity, but they willthen have the skills needed to meet the growingdemands of IP. Alternatively a company can hire adedicated IP technician, but they are likely tocommand a higher rate of salary, or they couldpartner with an IT company.

“Whichever option they choose there is nodenying that installers will need to be trained inIP in order to meet the growing demand and

Plug the knowledge gap

In a security worldwhere the installer isconstantly playingcatch-up with thedevelopments hittingthe market frommanufacturers, upskilling is vital

40

also future-proof their business,” he says. IFSEC events for the last few years have shown

that manufacturers are increasingly pushing IP,even if the core market for many of them is stillanalogue technology, but analogue is not wherethe R&D budget is going. The relationshipbetween IT and the security sector is a gap that isclosing and all the while this is going ontechnologies linked to IP and others are fastmoving with new systems constantly hitting themarket. But it is worth noting that while IPknowledge is widely reported as lacking in somequarters, there are other subjects that needaddressing too.

The largest knowledge gaps remain in IP videosurveillance. Many manufacturers are expendinga large amount of effort to convince the industrythat IP video surveillance can be as easy asanalogue – and it can, providing the basicelements of IP are clearly understood. Too manyinstallers are fitting IP cameras and network videorecorders or server based recording platformswithout any comprehension of bandwidthlimitations, VLAN separation, port allocation orPoE restrictions. Without doubt progress has beenmade, but there is still some way to go.

Other knowledge gaps that really stand out toconcern smartcards and the emerging NFC (NearField Communication) technologies. Smartcardshave already been widely adopted within the

education and public sectors, but a lot of the timethey’re not used for access control and while NFCis still a very new technology to access control, people might still be working out how they canpromote it.

Getting to grips with smartcards and NFC canopen up new opportunities for the installer andoffer a wealth of benefits to the end-user.

The possibility of new business should be agreat motivator for training, especially as end-users look to the installer for advice on what theyneed to solve a particular security problem andtake great comfort when the installer candemonstrate their knowledge of the industry andpropose a system to suit the exact requirementsof the application.

The benefits for installers that take the time tolearn about new technologies and to training theirstaff on various systems can have not only apositive effect on day-to-day performance, butalso on future business and the ability to competein areas that had previously been out of the remit– such as IP, NFC, 4K etc.

Fortunately, manufacturers recognise the needfor having an installer base that knows how to fitthe systems that are being introduced at acontinuous rate; if you can’t fit it, you won’tspecify it! Therefore your distributor or yourmanufacturer/vendor will run trainingprogrammes that will give you the background onhow to work with various technologies. What’smore, a lot of these training sessions are offeredfree of charge so keep an eye out for anyprogrammes in your local area.

If you want to compete, your knowledge mustcompare.

POWER

Modern organisations have manyconsiderations and responsibilities totheir customers, government and law but

in recent times the implementation of ‘green’policies has taken a new turn. In the past, companies were not restricted by environmentalissues, nor were they compulsory requirementsand, as a result, some organisations used beingenvironmentally-friendly as a marketing message.

Today however, with the widespread concernsregarding climate change, governments aroundthe world have deemed it necessary to includeregulations and legislation as to the performanceof business in terms of their environmental impact, which is now often referred to as the carbonfootprint. Since the first G8 Climate ChangeRoundtable in 2005 when former PM Tony Blair leda discussion regarding a global plan of action thegroup has grown to include companies such asFord, British Airways, HSBC, EDF and BP. Now, theRoundtable has a membership of 150 businessesspread across the globe which, according toReuters, Friends of the Earth feels represents amajor shift by the business community towardsefforts to mitigate climate change.

So with the seeming keenness of the businesscommunity to do something about its carbonfootprint and the promises made by governmentsto reduce carbon emissions ( the UK governmentintroduced carbon budgets as part of the ClimateChange Act 2008 to help the UK reducegreenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% by2050) legislation has become necessary.

The UK carbon budget places a restriction onthe total amount of greenhouse gases the UK canemit over a five-year period. Under a system ofcarbon budgets, every tonne of greenhouse gasesemitted between now and 2050 will count. Whereemissions rise in one sector, the UK will have toachieve corresponding falls in another.

The CRC affects large public and private sectororganisations across the UK, together responsiblefor around 10% of the UK’s greenhouse gasemissions. Participants include supermarkets, water companies, banks, local authorities and allcentral government departments.

The scheme is designed to target emissions notalready covered by Climate Change Agreements(CCAs) and the EU Emissions Trading System (EUETS) and features a range of drivers to encourageorganisations to develop energy managementstrategies that promote a better understanding ofenergy usage.

Organisations that meet the qualificationcriteria are required to participate, and must buyallowances for every tonne of carbon they emit.

Qualification for the scheme is based on

electricity usage. For Phase 2, organisations willqualify if, during the qualification year, theyconsumed over 6,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) ofqualifying electricity through settled half-hourlymeters.

Organisations that meet the qualificationthreshold must register using the CRC Registry, which is administered by the Environment Agency.Qualifying organisations have to comply legallywith the scheme or face financial and otherpenalties.

Organisations which participate within the CRCare required to monitor their energy use, andreport their energy supplies annually. TheEnvironment Agency’s reporting system appliesemissions factors to calculate participants’ carbondioxide (CO2) emissions on the basis of thisinformation. Participants must purchase andsurrender allowances to offset their emissions.Allowances can either be bought at annual fixed-price sales, or traded on the secondary market. One allowance must be surrendered for eachtonne of CO2 emitted. The allowance price inPhase 1 has been set at £12 per tonne of CO2.

Fines for failing to report on annual emissionscould increase. Currently organisations are fined aone-off payment of £5,000; paying a further £500for each subsequent day reports are delayed, upto a maximum of 40 working days - or £20,000 sothere is quite a financial motive for compliance aswell as the environmental factor.

What can your customers do? So your customer has a constant flow of peopleentering and leaving the site and a host ofpotential risks to deal with. How can they possiblybegin to consider their carbon footprint? And howmuch will it cost them to follow the legislation?

A report by CMR Consultants states: “Despiteits simplification, the CRC can impose a significantcost and resource burden on an organisation. Inaddition, the scheme is being amended on aregular basis by the Government and thereappears to be no sign of this changing.” It alsorecommends developing a carbon managementstrategy, budget for the energy consumptionallowances fees, and investigate the mosteffective ways of introducing energy-savingmeasures.

There are energy-saving measures for 24/7 fireand security systems you could specify that willhelp your customers avoid CRC fines. In suchcases it would certainly prove prudent to look atalternative forms of power supply such asswitched mode technology, already providingsavings for various sectors of the market.

The live screen comprises of 3 maincomponents: the video window, a status baracross the bottom and a timeline zone to the farright. The status bar and timeline zone aredisplayed when you move the cursor to thebottom or right hand side of the screenrespectively.

Operation of the NVR may be achieved via themouse or via the remote control. (The latter mayapparently be used to control multiple NVR’sproviding its ID has been programmed into them).

The HD Express range has been designed toprovide true plug and play operation when usedwith Vicon’s V992 and V960 range of IP cameras. We tested the NVR with 4 such cameras (aseparate review of the cameras will follow nextmonth) which by default come set for DHCP(Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). each camera was discovered, configured and came up in the livescreen without any intervention from ourselves. Any requiredchanges to camera configurations may then be completed directlyfrom the NVR.

The menu button on the left of the Status Bar provides access tosystem and recording set-up.

Navigation of the set up menus is straight forward, reasonablyintuitive and covered within the installation manual.

Recording may be auto-configured (optimised settings for eachmode) or set up manually. Recording modes include continuous, motion, alarm, scheduled and panic. All channels may be recordedat 25-30 images/sec at full HD resolution. Searching of recordedfootage is by time, thumbnail or event. Footage may be bookmarkedduring playback and reserved for archiving via the USB port.

The unit has a dedicated network port for remote access via aWeb Viewer providing comprehensive operation and configurationfeatures. Android and iPad/iPhone apps are also available.

Use of the NVR with third party products is one area that isquestionable. There are suggestions within the product’s marketingdocumentation that it may be used with third party ONVIF compliantcameras but we saw no detail information within the installationmanual to confirm this.

The HD Express NVR is well suited to smaller entry levelapplications providing an effective solution for 1080p recording andplayback. Its simplicity of operation and installation when used withVicon’s own V992/V960 IP camera range is difficult to ignore and ifthere are any installers out there still harbouring a fear of IP, thisproduct provides a good platform to begin experiencing networkvideo with.

The RISCO LightSYS 2 is a hybrid securitysystem offering up to 32 circuits in anycombination of conventionally wired,

wireless or RISCO Bus wiringmethods. The product isdesigned to comply withEN50131-1, EN50131-3 Grade 2and is aimed at the smallercommercial and largerresidential markets. The mainpanel is available in apolycarbonate housing with a1.5A PSU or in a metalenclosure with 1.5A or 4A PSU.The panel comes with 8onboard detection circuitsthat may be wired using avariety of methods but 2K2resistors are supplied fordouble EOL wiring if required.Wired (8 circuit) and wireless(32 circuit) expansion unitsare available. Otheraccessories include a varietyof compatible keypads, plugin IP and GPRS/GSM modules,an X10 transmitter module, interactive voice module andauxiliary power supplies.

The unit provided forevaluation was the polycarbonate version, whichhas a drop down hinged lid (can be completelyremoved if necessary). The main PCB sits abovethe 1.5A block power supply across the top of theenclosure and there are mounting clips to the lefthand side for 2 accessory/expansion moduleswhich are mounted vertically (side edge to thefront). Our unit came with an interactive voicemodule and wireless expansion module in theselocations. The IP and GPRS/GSM plugin modulesmount directly onto the main PCB with the GPRSantenna located vertically on the right hand sideof the panel. A back tamper switch may bemounted centrally below the main PCB (notsupplied with our unit) and below this is thebattery space.

Hardwired circuits may use a variety of resistorvalues and these can be programmed circuit bycircuit if required. Alternatively RISCO Busdetectors may be installed directly on the same 4wire communication line as the keypads andsystem modules. Bus detectors include a range ofmotion detectors and a seismic detector. TheCommunication Bus is limited to 300m but thisshould be plenty for the target market and can beextended if required using Bus Zone Expandermodules. A further option is to install a wirelessreceiver module (2 may be connected in total) tothe communication line, thus enabling the use ofRISCO’s extensive wireless detector range.

There is a choice of 3 hardwired and a wirelesskeypad, though only the hardwired versions maybe used for system programming. All of them havea proximity option.

As outlined above the LightSYS has severalcommunication options; onboard PSTN,GPRS/GSM and IP in any combination. Theoptional voice module provides pre-recordedevents announcements, system statusinformation, two way audible communicationsand any DTMF telephone can become a keypad forthe system. Assuming either GPRS or IP modulesare installed, there is a further option to registerthe system with RISCO Cloud* enablingcommunication and monitoring viasmartphone/tablet and web application.

So to the system configuration and operation;how easy is the system to configure and use?Engineer programming may be achieved by any ofthe following methods.

- Via RISCO’s configuration software (eitherlocally or remotely).

- Upload a previously saved configuration froma Program Transfer Module (PTM).

- Via an LCD system keypadConfiguration software is available to

download from the RISCO website but isrestricted to registered installers and this cantake a day or so to come through. Since we hadneither the configuration software nor a saved

configuration, we ‘opted’ to use the traditionalmethod!

The problem with engineer programming menus isthat we get used to using a particular product and it’svery easy to dismiss new products because they don’tconform. In most cases they are not worse, justdifferent! The LightSYS is no exception; our initialreview of the programming instructions in the manualmade for a pretty daunting looking task. The realityhowever is not so bad. Entering the engineering menu

is easy enough and once you begin to get the menustructure in your head, navigation through theprogramming is easy enough. An Auto –Settingsprocess scans the communication bus, identifies allthe device modules connected and displays them oneby one on the keypad to be accepted and parametersconfigured.

Once programmed, the functions available to theuser are considerable. Basic operation however, interms of setting/unsetting, managing user codes etc.is pretty straightforward.

There is little doubt that LightSYS2 is a trulyversatile security control system providing flexibilityof installation and an extensive list of features. Itshould certainly fulfil the needs of the target marketof small commercial / large residential providing ofcourse that grade 2 is acceptable. It has so manyfeatures that we found ourselves wondering howmany installations could actually exploit the productto anything like its full potential!

STANDARDS

www.psimagazine.co.uk

... and what you need to know byAdrian Mealing - Chairman BSIASecurity EquipmentManufacturers Section

As our world continues to evolve, and thedigital age expands, legislation acrossthe EU and in other parts of the world is

in a constant state of change. Issues aroundglobal warming, the expansion of wireless technology and the ever-increasing awareness of the need to be green and "do your bit"have an impact on everything we do and the products we buy. Theintruder alarm industry is not immune to this, and manufacturers, suppliers and installers all have a role to play in ensuringcompliance and good environmental practices are adhered too.

Changes made to two standards in 2011 which affect intruderalarm systems come into force on 13th June this year. EN50130-4Alarm systems. Electromagnetic compatibility. Product familystandard. Immunity requirements for components of fire, intruder, hold up, CCTV, access control and social alarm systems andEN50130-5 Alarm systems. Environmental test methods. Both ofthese standards are used by test labs and are a requirement for CEmarking. Responsible manufactures, and those governed by theBSIA's code of conduct, will already be ahead of the game, ensuringtheir products meet the requirements, and keeping you legal andabove board.

One of the main changes is an increase in radiatedelectromagnetic field immunity requirements, which now sit at2.7GHz. It's not always about how your product may influenceothers, the reverse is also true, and making sure the equipment youuse meets the applicable standards reduces the possibility of falseactivations and spurious alarms.

We have all been to sites where spurious or unexplained alarmsoccur, and 99% of the time the equipment is replaced to pacify theclient, even when the cause is unknown. In many cases, the alarmcould have been caused by environmental issues and this isprobably more the case with wireless devices. The proliferation ofother high-powered devices being deployed in homes andbusinesses either in the same frequency band or in adjacent bands, mean that proper testing of equipment placed on the market is anabsolute requirement. BSIA manufacturers take their role veryseriously, and are committed to providing reliable equipment bothnow and in the future.

There are of course many other environmental regulations anddirectives, which affect manufacturers, installers and end usersalike. The WEEE Directive, the ROHS2 Directive, REACH and a wholelist of other work is being carried out across the EU. Fortunately theBSIA and its manufacturers are fully engaged in the processes, andwill be compliant when Directives and legislation change.

So with all of this "stuff" going on, why would you not make sureyou buy your equipment from a BSIA manufacturer, after all they aredoing lots of the hard work for you behind the scenes, to help yoube compliant, and make sure the product you install is legal and fitfor purpose? You could import product yourself, but if it does notcome from the EU, how will you guarantee you are not opening upyour business to easily avoided risks?Next month: Alarm cable - it's just a bit of wire isn't it?

Sounder for hazardous areasHochiki Europe has announced the latest addition to its range ofintrinsically safe compatible devices – the CHQ-ISM soundermodule. The intrinsically safe devices are incapable of releasingsufficient electrical or thermal energy to cause the ignition of aspecific hazardous atmospheric mixture in its most easilyignitable concentration. This is achieved by limiting the amountof power available to the electrical equipment in the hazardousarea to a level below that where ignition is possible. The lowpower levels also mean that there is no shock hazard due toexcess thermal energy and arcing.

With a similar look and feel as the standard modules in therange, the CHQ-ISM is designed for use in the ‘safe’ area of ahazardous area fire detection system and, therefore, does notrequire specialised certification. It allows any third partysounders and beacons installed in the ‘hazardous’ area to becontrolled and monitored by an analogue addressable controlpanel that is configured around Hochiki Europe’s EnhancedSystems Protocol (ESP). The unit is wired either directly to thepanel via the conventional sounder circuits – receiving its 24Vpower supply from the panel – or via a CHQ-DSC soundercontroller module connected to the loop, where it requires aseparate 24V power supply. www.hochikieurope.com

New licensing concept announcedMilestone Systems has announced a new licensing conceptfor analogue cameras used with the forthcoming XProtect2014 family of VMS products. In the new licensing concept, only one hardware device license is needed per analogue-to-IP encoder unit, regardless of the number of analoguecameras connected to the encoder unit.

This new licensing concept facilitates a smooth migrationto digital video for customers using analogue cameras. Theycan get all the benefits of using IP video managementsoftware at a cost-effective price, even when using analoguecameras. Furthermore, the transition from analogue to IPcan be done with the most convenient timing for thecustomer. The analogue infrastructure can run parallel tonew IP technology, making the transition in a gradualapproach. Analogue cameras can be swapped for digitalcameras as needed.www.milestonesys.com

FIRE APPLICATION

Quickinstall forpharmaclientFollowing theinstallation of aBaldwin BoxallBVR20 networkedsystem in early2000s, apharmaceuticalresearch customerdecided to carryout a completefire detectionupgrade to thesite, whichincluded a newfire alarm system, detectors, voice alarm, fibre network andloudspeakers. It is estimated that over 50 control panels, around9,000 fire alarm devices and about the same number ofloudspeakers will be replaced, checked and tested across thesite during the 24 month project. At a site that employs around2,000 staff, it was imperative that any disruption during thereplacement of loudspeakers, or any part of the system, waskept to the minimum.

Baldwin Boxall was handed the order to provide areplacement VA system in Autumn 2013 – comprising of 14 EVASdigitally networked racks, touchscreen control, fire and controlmicrophones. In December 2013 the systems were delivered tosite and installed adjacent to the existing BVR20 racks. Duringthis period a new multimode fibre backbone was installedthroughout the complex and the new racks were then connectedto the network and soak tested over the Christmas break, thusensuring there were no faults on the fibre network. The existingBVR20 system remained operational during this period.

In January 2014, with the co-operation of Baldwin Boxall’sproject management team, Tri Management planned the bestway to swap over the BVR20 VA system to the new EVAS system, with the minimum downtime as possible. A programme of workswas carried out – starting with the fitting of new fire detectionpanels, detection loops/devices, and connecting these panelsthe BVR20 rack system.

Tri Management checked all loudspeaker circuits, prior to themigration; clearing any faults found ensured that the new systemwould be fault free at the time of changeover. New voice alarmtermination boxes were installed in each rack room and, initially, connected to the BVR20 system. Loudspeaker lines were fedthrough the new EVAS racks and re-terminated back onto the old,in preparation for the changeover. One by one, each circuit wasdisconnected to the correct circuit within minutes. This method, along with taking full advantage of the fact that the system iswired on a dual circuit basis, ensured that there was no systemdowntime throughout this complex site.

Prior to the final swap over, each building was tested with alocal alert and evacuate message. At this point it was necessaryto amend the messages as the client wished to have the existingold VA messages and not new versions. So, Baldwin Boxall’sengineer simply downloaded the existing messages from the oldsystem then uploaded to the new. Then each local firemicrophone was tested. This ensured a smooth transition whenthe final swap over took place.

Effective planning and efficient methods meant that thetransition from old to new was carried out in 2.5 days.

ConnectionsHello again,

I was asked once if this column was written by a “ghost”writer and if not, do I ever have difficulty thinking of asubject matter after 20 plus years of the connectionscolumn?

Well, firstly I am afraid that all that is printed here can onlybe attributed directly to me and secondly, there havealways been things to talk about in our industry, even if onoccasion the column has been used to take a bit of a swipeat the establishment.

It is fair to say that at on many occasions the content hasfocused on particular issues and those it affected wereconcentrating more on what was being said, rather thangetting on resolving the issues and running their ownbusiness. That’s the beauty of an advertorial column in atrade magazine, it enables one to vent one’s spleen or topromote our own Company and the services it provides.

This month is a reflection on our longevity in themonitoring business and the continued commitment toproviding unrivalled levels of customer service to the Fire &Security industry.

After 31 years of trading, we have seen competition &recessions come and go, we’ve seen the constant cycle ofacquisition and new growth. We’ve seen numerous ACPOpolicies and inspectorate bodies as well as huge changesto Standards and it’s fair to say we have been in the thickof it, representing our industry in all sectors and 31 yearson, we continue to do so.

However, back in December 1983 when we opened ourdoors (figuratively speaking!), I would never have dreamtthat in 2014 we would be the size we are with twocentres, certificated by NSI for Fire, Intruder, CCTV andHigh Integrity monitoring.

With new customers joining SMS & NMS on a daily basis,we are still enjoying significant growth and I cannot recallsuch an increase in sales activity from the Fire & Securitychannel, well not since the last national renumberingexercise in 1994.

Additionally, we are constantly being challenged on theprimary core services we deliver by companies who areoutside of the Fire & Security marketplace, who in turnwant to avail themselves of our 365 24/7 facilities both inManchester and Portsmouth. So we find ourselvesexploring other opportunities that have taken us into otherareas of monitoring, brand reputation and phoneanswering services.

Of course we would also be delighted to share our depthof experience by providing monitoring services for yourCompany as well, so please give us a ring for competitiverates, you’ve nothing to lose, but you might if you don’t!

Bye for now

FIRE APPLICATION

Glass atrium provides install challenges5 Merchant Square is an office building arranged over 15 floors in Paddington’swaterside setting, with a full height glass atrium. The shape of the atrium creates aflood of natural light throughout the building but this presented challenges when itcame to fitting fire detection equipment, as Chris Onions, Project Manager atLeader Systems explains: “We were tasked to fit out the shell and core of the 15floor building to give fire detection across the whole site. There were a number offeatures in the building that meant a complete fire detection system was absolutelyvital. The first challenge was the atrium. As a full glass structure, with no access, itwas impossible to fit any smoke or multi-sensor detectors at the top. However, because it was 100% glass, the only place a fire could start would be on the groundand so we chose to fit eight fire beam detectors.”

The open protocol, reflective smoke beam detectors incorporate a motorisedhead able to align itself during commissioning to continually correct againstbuilding movement and ensure maximum protection at all times.

“The next challenge came in the loading bay areas. As with any environment likethis, the high ceilings allowing for lorry movement meant traditional detectorswouldn’t give the level of protection required, so we used Apollo’s Flame Detector,”Chris said. Flame Detector is designed to protect enclosed indoor areas where openfires may occur and has a fast acting response to flames up to 25m away. Critically,it is able to discriminate between flames and other, non-threatening sources ofradiation.

Leader Systems finished the initial installation and then revisited to installdetectors for a retailer’s head offices which occupied the first seven floors of thebuilding. In total, Leader Systems installed more than 4,500 devices and expandedon the fire alarm panels installed during the shell and core fit out. Chris explains:“We were already familiar with the site and its challenges so this installation was more straightforward. We used Discovery devices again and fitted optical devices in the voids above all ceilings.”

hen the SCCI Group decided to acquire a

business to help expand it’s offering, it lookedfor a good small business with sound foundationsoperating in similar sectors. It didn’t have to look toohard to find Alphatrack Systems Ltd then run by theimposing figure of Doug Hursey a 6ft 9” former rugbyplayer who ran a very tight ship and had personalinvolvement in virtually every decision the businessmade on a daily basis. The deal was done in December2011 and by June 2012 both SCCI and Alphatrack wereoperating as one business (though in two distinctdivisions; Media & Combined Services) out of newoffices in Harlow, Essex and under the newly brandedSCCI Alphatrack Ltd.

Since then the Combined Services division whofocus on providing Security & Fire system services tolandlords across the UK has more than doubled in sizeand continues to enjoy organic growth through acombination of customer retention and new customeracquisition. With recently won maintenance contractsfrom the likes of Norwich City Council, Derby Homes,Thames Valley Housing Association, Poplar Harca, RedKite Housing Association and most recently The HydeGroup, proving the underlying business base is strongand getting stronger.

The division’s Managing Director Andy Kearns fullyrecognises the challenges that growth can bring andalso the importance of the people within his business.“As a business we’ve more than doubled in size since2012. This is really encouraging but it does bring itsown challenges. The core foundations of people,

processes, systems and controls that work in a £5mbusiness are unlikely to work as well for a £15mbusiness. We have experienced a few internal growingpains over the last year or so but nothing that hasderailed our business or stopped us from supporting theneeds of our clients and their residents. However, wecontinue to set our sights firmly on taking this businessfrom a good one to an excellent one and this is theprimary focus for the next 12 months. We are now wellon the way to that through a number of internalinitiatives including our ‘Performance Through People’programme which will lay the foundations for personalexcellence across all levels of our business.”

New Contract, New RecruitsSCCI Alphatrack was recently awarded a contract toprovide maintenance services to Security, Fire,Emergency Lighting and Warden Call systems for HydeHousing. This project sees them providingengineering services from the South Coast up to theEast Midlands, covering a large tranche of centralLondon along the way. In Social Housing terms this isa huge contract with a rapid mobilisation challengewhich will see them recruiting circa 50 new engineersin a variety of roles and locations across the UK. Theyare looking for Security & Fire Engineers and LineManagers to support both Preventative and Reactivemaintenance programmes being delivered as part of this new contract.

SSAIB is the UK’s leading fire, security and telecare certification body, offering awide range of schemes for providers of electronicsecurity systems with the objective of promotinghigh standards and providing recognition forthose companies which achieve them.

“SSAIB passionately believes that it isimperative for all companies operating in theprofessional security arena to provide access totraining for all staff and particularly for thoseresponsible for the design, installation andmaintenance of security and safety systems,” saidGeoff Tate, Chief Executive of SSAIB.“Professionally developed and delivered trainingis essential to any business wishing to succeed intoday’s world and SSAIB has no hesitation in fullysupporting the professional training coursesdeveloped and delivered by Tavcom.”

The Tavcom online‘distance learning’ trainingcourses approved by SSAIBoffer a practical and costeffective alternative totraditional classroom stylecourses, allowing students toacquire new skill sets withouthaving to come ‘off the road’and at their own pace and intheir own time.
