Sigma Chi – Kappa Psi Fall 2014 A Chapter Facing Change A review of the summer, fall semester, recruitment and homecoming This year was expected to be a challenge. After losing a large amount of our chapter due to many brothers graduating, we knew we would face an uphill battle as soon as fall started. This summer, after completing initiation for the Pi Pledge class, we added six new brothers to the Chapter and Fraternity. As summer hit, small recruitment events occurred, such as meeting potentials in town and sending their families letters documenting our chapter’s successes. Coming out of recruitment, the Chapter extended fourteen bids to gentlemen we saw fitting to the Jordan Standard. Of the fourteen bids extended, thirteen were accepted. A Chapter Facing ChangeA review of the summer, fall semester, recruitment and

homecomingThis year was expected to be a

challenge. Coming out of

recruitment, the Chapter extended fourteen bids to gentlemen we saw fitting to the Jordan Standard. Of the fourteen bids extended, thirteen were accepted. Even though we might have initially been disappointed with a smaller number for the Rho pledge class than anticipated, we are proud to say that we received thirteen of the most well rounded and highest potential driven men that went through recruitment. The level of potential that they have cannot be measured, and we hope to call them brothers in a few

As the semester is coming to a close, it is pleasing to look back and see all that we have accomplished this semester. On top of raising $10,000 for charity in just one week, we have managed to engage in service all over the community. Our brothers are continuing to show academic excellence all the while being INVOLVED in organizations that span the university. Involved has been our word for the semester and as I see it, we have been just that. We are on track to bring 10 new

pledges into our order and we just inducted 20+ girls as Lady Chis. As we continue expand our program here at UTM we are always looking for ways to advance our members. Coming up in the remainder of the semester we are looking forward to a Thanksgiving dinner for our brothers and Lady Chis as well as our annual semi-formal. To our friends and family, enjoy the holidays coming up and God Bless!

After being pinned as the 2014-2015 Kappa Psi Sweetheart I was more than honored and could not wait for this year to take off! I was soon shown that I was working with the most dedicated and hard working group of men. The gentlemen have added quite a few renovations to the house

and have spent an enormous amount of time and energy on their back to back busy weeks, starting with fall rush, derby days then homecoming. I have never been more proud for this chapter. I am blessed to be a part of this great re-building year.

Homecoming

Lip SyncThe theme for Lip Sync this year was a ‘70s movie and a word to use in the songs to describe the movie. The chapter picked Saturday Night Fever and “shake” to do this. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough for a trophy.

Rope PullThis year, a brand new team went and pulled their hearts out. We took fifth overall.

PyramidOur theme this year was Jabbawockeez. Even though we had a great show, it wasn’t enough for first and we took home the second place trophy.

Derby DaysA record breaking, roller coaster week

If Derby Days 2014 had to be characterized by a single word it would be special. This year, the university calendar forced us to choose September 15th-19th as our annual philanthropy week. This year, our Philanthropy Chairman, Brother Sean O’Brien, added new events and changed the other activities to be friendlier to participation and to engage a broader audience. This was the inaugural year for the Derby Darling competition, changing from an award given to the organization who collects the most Derby Dollars to a pageant that finds the girl that best exemplifies

the spirit of Derby Days and the Huntsman Cancer Institute. The first Derby Darling to be crowned was Erica Reed, a girl that captured the audience all night long with personal stories about her family and their struggle with cancer to having the audience rolling and laughing with her talent section. All in all, the week drew the largest crowds the chapter has seen at events in many years, and the grand total was the largest amount of money the chapter has ever raised. With a grand total of $10,000 raised, $5,000 went to the sisters of Zeta Tau Alpha for Breast Cancer Awareness and Education, while the other $5,000 was sent to the

Chapter House ImprovementsThis summer and in the beginning of the

semester, brothers came together and did some improvements on the house. From clearing a lot of brush and land to give us more space for parking to the installation of a long awaited volleyball court, the chapter house is slowly starting to take shape and help us recruit more actively throughout the semester.

Olivia Fernandez, the previous Sweetheart, along with the current Sweetheart generously painted a mural of our letters and crest in the basement, and the chapter invested in repainting the floor with the Grand Seal inlaid and sealed over with an epoxy.

These projects couldn’t have taken shape without generous donations by family and alumni, so we would like to thank all of you personally who have helped!
