The Annual General Meeting was held on May 28, 2014 at Administration Building #2 in Room 106 with approx. 130 members in attendance. Executive and Council Members for the current year were introduced to the membership in attendance. After our recess the results of the election were announced and the 2014/2015 Executive and Council members were introduced. We would like to welcome the new and returning members to our Executive and Council.

With our Elections now over, we would like to extend our thanks to those who are leaving us.

Lesley Meese – Lesley has served as Junior/Senior High School Clerical Representative for several years. Lesley has served on many of the Council committees and has been serving on the Collective Bargaining Committee for this round of negotiations. Thanks to Lesley for the countless hours you spent typing out the changes for bargaining. I have always appreciated your attention to detail.

The membership has been fortunate to have this dedicated and committed individual serving on their behalf. It has been a pleasure to work with you.

I would like to welcome to Council Melissa Jaques, Junior/Senior High School Clerical Representative. I look forward to working with you. We would like to thank the members of the Teller’s Committee for assisting at the Annual General Meeting:

Millie Mercier – Chairman Colleen Chopek Laurie Hurd Carrie Logan Barbara Ediger Monica Sitter

Thank you to the Chairperson of the Nominating Committee, Cynthia Hornstein, Chairperson of the Membership Committee, Maria Carreira and the Committee Members for all the work that they have done for the Elections and the Annual General Meeting.

I would also like to say Thank You to all the Liaison Representatives in the workplaces. Your involvement with the Association and everything you do on behalf of the Association is very much appreciated.

There were five proposed Amendments to the Constitution that were voted on at the Annual General Meeting. Only one of the five amendments passed with more than 2/3rds vote.

At this time of year, schools and work locations are working on their staffing compliments. The staffing compliment in schools and work locations are determined by student enrolment and Division programs. Many of you may be facing the prospect of a placement for September because of a change in the staffing compliment at your work location. If you are a permanent employee, the Division will place you in a position with the same classification and the hours that you work. I know that change is often difficult to accept, but it is important for you to maintain your permanent assignment. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at the office 204 953-0250.

Enjoy your summer & happy holiday.

Good bye to Marilyn Leclair Our office secretary Marilyn Leclair is leaving us. Thanks for everything

you have done and the contribution you have made to the WANTE office. We all wish you well.

From the Vice President - Luis Tome

How time seems to fly. It was only yesterday that the weather was getting colder and leaves were falling from the trees as we started the new school year 2013-2014. As I look out the window the weather has not changed much, only the months on the calendar….here is hoping for summer, because it’s JUNE!!!

It was a very busy year in my role as Vice President, Liaison Committee Chair and various other committees of WANTE. It can have it’s moments of glory, despair, frustration and hope. It has been a full year of grievances won and lost against our Collective Agreement. With the Collective Bargaining Committee, it has also been a lengthy process and hopefully we are coming to an end soon. I understand some of the frustration from the membership over the whole process. Remember we are all members in this process.

I would like to thank the Executive and Council for their work throughout the school year. I would also like to express my gratitude to the membership for selecting me as your Vice President and look forward to next year.

Have a great, relaxing, safe and wonderful summer in whatever you find yourself doing.

Luis Tome, Vice President

June 2014 NEWSLETTER

The Liaison Committee has held four meetings during this school year 2013-2014.

This committee is responsible for the promotion of good will between the Association and the membership. We conduct regular meetings with the work location Liaison Representatives throughout the school year, providing information about changes in procedures, frequently asked questions and upcoming activities.

There are many topics that are addressed at these meetings. These topics come to the attention of the Committee through your Representatives from the work locations, the WANTE office, e-mails, questions from the membership and meetings with the School Division.

The Representatives play a very important role in the communication from the work locations to the WANTE office and back to the membership. If you are the representative for your location please try to attend the meeting. If you cannot make it, please let the office know of your absence. The minutes of the meeting will be posted on the website. One copy should be printed and placed in the WANTE blue binders for the membership.

I would like to thank all of you, the Representatives from your various work locations, on the time and commitment to your Association. You play an important role in WANTE and we do appreciate that. As part of that appreciation we host the Liaison Dinner which this year will be on June 5th at the Marigold Restaurant located at 1245 Inkster Blvd.

I would also want to thank the Liaison Committee for their time and efforts. Also thanks to the members of the Council and Executive who attend the Liaison meetings.

Have a safe and relaxing summer, whenever it arrives. See you next year.

Luis Tome, Chair, Liaison Committee

From the Liaison Committee - Luis Tome

The Labour Ed Committee had a very busy year! We were pleased to offer our members a variety of workshops throughout the year. Paul Fust from Investors Group was out for two different workshops: Creating A Retirement Paycheque and Estate Preservation. The Labour Ed Committee is dedicated to providing relevant and useful workshops to our members free of charge throughout the year. I would like to thank the members of the committee Kelly Bowen, Maria Carreira, Denise Hanlan, Carla Paul, Michelle Short and Tricia Wiebe for their hard work this past year.

If you have any suggestions for workshops you are interested in, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or call the WANTE office (204) 953-0250 and we will try to make it happen.

Have a safe and restful summer!
