“The Epiphany manifests the divinity of Jesus to the whole world.”

Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Epiphany. The word “epiphany” comes from a Greek verb that means “to shine upon,” “to manifest,” or “to make known.” What the Church celebrates today is the manifes-tation of our Lord Jesus Christ to the whole world; after being made known to the shepherds of Bethlehem, He is revealed to the Magi who have come from the East to adore Him. The Epiphany is a great Feast for us. In a sense this is a second Christmas Day as it puts the Lord in a new light. This day manifests the divinity of Jesus. At Christmas it was a few shepherds who were invited by the Angels to go and witness and recognize the Lord. However, today, at the Epiphany, the voice of God calls the whole world, each and every one of us, to adore Jesus, and to hear Him. The Epiphany or the realization of the divinity and saving grace of the Lord should lead us as individuals to a personal epiphany. In a sense an epiphany is representative of conversion, conversion to the truth. If we accept Christ as our Savior and if we truly strive to live our lives as His disciple, we begin to pursue lives of stewardship, lives of love and service. Today of all days should help point us to that realization and in that goal. With all of us doing our fair share and fulfilling our duty of Christian stewardship, St. Joseph the Worker church can become a shining star where God’s people can find beautiful prayer, reconciliation and healing. Please, help us to continue spread the mercy, love and the Joy of Jesus by making an extra special Christmas offering today. Thank you. Blessed New Year, Fr. Kenneth Nobrega

Gracias. Bendecido año nuevo, P. Kenneth Nobrega

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION This year, in the United States the celebration of the Epiphany falls on January 8, but the traditional date for the Epiphany is January 6. The date we know as January 6 was established as the solstice in Egypt in 1996 BC, but the Egyptian calendar lost a full day every 128 years. Twenty centuries later the actual sol-stice had migrated to December 25. People still kept January 6 for the solstice celebration, but December 25, matching nicely with the Roman pagan feast of the Unconquered Sun, launched an extended solstice holi-day. By the time of the early church, the whole period of twelve days was celebrated just about everywhere. Christians began to celebrate Christ as the true light of the world in four themes: the Nativity, the manifestation to the Gentiles, the baptism of the Lord, and the wedding feast at Cana. That was entirely too much for one day to handle. A twelve-day season was ready to be adapted, so Christians borrowed from the pagan calendar for their own season of light. Thus ear-ly Christian celebrations of the Christmas season ex-tended from one date for the solstice, December 25, to the older date, January 6. The darkest time in the Northern Hemisphere could now be filled with the Christian observance of the arrival of the Light of the World. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
