National Defence University (NDU) NDU is the apex institution of the Pakistan Armed Forces, specifically established to impart education in fields of strategy, statecraft, warfare, public policy, leadership and peace studies with focus on national security and defence. It is a Centre of Excellence in academic and research pursuits, promoting the cause of free, open and critical inquiry and scholarly debate in the service of the government and society of Pakistan. The university is designed to cater the needs of the senior leadership from various segments of the society and the government from both home and abroad. Suiting the needs of senior leadership, NDU runs a number of short and long duration programmes. Now the institution is also open for private sector for M.Sc, M.Phil, and Ph.D programmes.

Faculty of Contemporary Studies (FCS) Established since June 2008 the Faculty of Contemporary Studies(FCS) functions as an institution of excellence imparting higher education to the fresh graduates as well civilian and military practitioners. The FCS has the proud privilege of being the pioneer institution in offering graduate programmes in the disciplines of Government & Public Policy, Strategic & Nuclear Studies, Peace & Conflict Studies and Leadership & Management Studies alongside the traditional International Relations Program. Evolving from Pakistan’s premium defence studies institution National Defence University, FCS offers a unique environment where students gain an exposure to the strategic milieu of Pakistan in an excellent academic environment. The curricula of all programmes follow international guidelines. While the students are given an understanding of the global context for each module, the focus remains on innovating and introducing skill sets to suit the requirements of Pakistan’s environment. The programmes at FCS have been designed to attract not only the fresh graduates but also practitioners who can bring richness of their experience to the academic environment of the classroom. The programmes are designed with due consideration to the needs of fresh graduates and mid-career professionals. FCS aims to become the prime institution of Social Sciences in Pakistan and impart education that will set its graduates a cut above the rest. All department at FCS offer M.Sc, M.Phil, and Ph.D degrees.

Office of the Registrar: Admissions: National Defence University (NDU) offers admissions in M.Sc, M.Phil & Ph.D at Faculty of Contemporary Sciences twice a year (Spring & Fall). The admission at NDU is strictly based on the merit. The University is open to all persons irrespective of gender, religion, race, creed, colour or domicile. Admission shall be granted on the basis of eligibility criteria of the university. Applicants who have appeared in pre-requisite level examination prescribed for admission in a programme and are awaiting results will be provisionally admitted against an undertaking that they will pass their examination as per admission criteria. Students are required to submit attested copies of their certificates/degrees within four weeks of declaration of results, failing which the University will cancel their admission. Only those students who have completed all the formalities and deposited their fees and other dues on the prescribed date are eligible for registration. Each student, admitted on the merit, is expected to take the full load of the courses prescribed for the semester.

www.ndu.edu.pk. ii. Take the print of duly filled /completed application and attach the

relevant documents as per check list provided on the printed application.

iii. Submit duly completed form along with enlisted documents and specified payment (cash/ pay- order in favour of National Defence University) by hand or through courier within stipulated time period.

iv. Appear in the NDU Entry Test/GAT & Interview on the given date and time. v. Check your name on the merit list displayed on the university main gate & website. vi. Selected candidates collect their fee voucher from respective departments and submit in the

Department of Government & Public Policy (GPP) Introduciton The programme in Government and Public Policy prepares students for careers in policy analysis, programme evaluation, and management and planning. The curriculum provides a foundation in subjects ranging from elements of public policy and its relevance in efficient governance; decision-making processes and specific analytic tools and concepts of economic theory and statistical modeling with the aim of creating a trained community of policy analysts and evaluators. The programme is designed to equip the participants with analytical approach and critical perspective to policy issues, with special focus on training to find innovative solutions of complex policy problems in the field of public policy as well as in the emerging fields of Environment, Disaster Management and Governance. To give students a chance to apply the skill sets learned in classroom to real policy issues and also experience field work, they are required to carry out exploration of a policy issue and author a project report based on their findings. The programme is designed to meet the needs of graduate students aspiring for careers in public policy as well as practitioners and mid-career professionals from public, corporate and non-profit sectors seeking to enhance their analytical skills. Our vibrant student body constitutes individuals from diverse backgrounds which make the class room experience rich and rewarding. The MS-Project Management (MSPM) program is developed to contribute towards meeting the rapidly growing demand in Pakistan for competent, motivated and qualified graduates with rigorous institutionalized project management training and research. The MSPM program’s graduates will be equipped with all the project management knowledge they need in order to professionally manage and administer projects in Pakistan in the private or public-sectors, in development fields and in the non-governmental sector. Special emphasis is accorded to developing, inter alias, their analytical, creative skills, communication, leadership and inter-personal skills and providing them with a holistic perspective of project management.

Department of Peace & Conflict Studies (PCS)

Introduciton: National Defence University (NDU) has the privilege to establish the Department of Peace & Conflict Studies, the first one in the country. It is an interdisciplinary field in social sciences. It has its roots in the fields of Political Science, International Relations, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology and Security Studies. This program revolves around the research and analysis of international disputes and conflicts and bringing of sustainable peace. It also covers the process of minimizing the violence at domestic, regional and international levels. The Department offers degrees of M.Sc. M.Phil. and Ph.D degree that are designed to equip the students with necessary repertoire required to ventures for careers in diversified sectors. Objectives: Peace & Conflict Studies program aims at understanding of the issues that may lead to armed conflicts and war. Primarily the focal points of this program are causes and conditions of violence, conflict analysis, conflict resolution and transformation. Students are introduced with different approaches to peace and conflict and given confidence to communicate their opinion and logic Job Opportunities: Degree in Peace & Conflict is equivalent to those of International Relations, Political Science or Pakistan Studies. Jobs are available in Academia, Journalism, Policy making, Public Service, Foreign Service, International Development, United Nations, International and Local Non-Governmental Organizations and Multinational Corporations. Many graduates have also gone abroad for Doctorate degrees on scholarships and others are working in well-known organizations in Pakistan. Additionally, Peace and Conflict Studies help the students in connecting with professional fields through internships and summer jobs. It helps the students to make connection in the field and provides them practical experience. The degree holders have the opportunity to get job in National Assembly of Pakistan, Senate, FIA, IB, ISPR, NECTA, all government Ministries, all Think Tanks (IPRI, IRS, ISSI, CISS etc), National and International NGOs. Department of Strategic & Nuclear Studies (SNS) Introduciton The Department of Strategic and Nuclear Studies (S&NS) is the first department of its kind in any Pakistani University. The Department of Strategic and Nuclear studies was established in 2009 and aims at achieving global standing as a centre of excellence in academic research with graduate, post-graduate and professional programs of excellent quality. Within this aim, the program familiarizes the students with the basic concepts in nuclear politics and regional political and strategic issues. The program focuses on nuclear revolution, debates surrounding nuclear use, nuclear strategies, as well deterrence, nuclear proliferation and non proliferation, arms control and disarmament. A combination of nuclear politics and strategic studies is meant to be combined two related fields under the rubric of strategic studies, covering technological, strategic and political aspects. The curriculum is designed to give the program a broader scope and applicability, and equip the students to address the issues in nuclear politics going beyond the technological and strategic aspects, as well as delve into various dimensions of strategic studies. Gaining and understanding of the roll of nuclear weapons in the current international order, and relating to the specific regional contexts, particularly the South Asia is an intrinsic part of the program. The program complements the field of international relations and security studies. The department offers MSc, M.Phil and Ph.D degrees. Department of International Relations (IR) Introduciton Department of International Relations is the most dynamic school at the FCS that bears the institutional legacy of NDU. The Department offers a range of multi-disciplinary courses, tailored to provide students with skills and abilities essential for a variety of professional careers in public and private sectors, under the guidance of highly-qualified academicians. Pillared by studies of theory, Political history, emerging contemporary issues and a diverse array of closely related subjects, carefully designed to acquaint the students with deep understanding and to groom a new generation of political analysts, diplomats, policy makers, intellectuals, journalists and civil servants. The faculty of IR is dedicated to excellence in teaching, learning and research and providing conducive environment, numerous opportunities for students to participate in lively debates, intensive research, critical discourse, realistic simulations and scholarly seminars which form the core activities of this dynamic programme. The IR student body consists of civilians, senior military officers, foreign students, Pakistani and foreign diplomats. In addition to gaining a thorough knowledge of the essential principles of International Relations, the students are also trained to demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge, critically evaluate and analyse problems and communicate effectively and confidently in various form. With its state of the art facilities, large library resources and rich exposure to teachers, practitioners and researchers, the department remains highly focused and dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in education and learning outcomes. The multi- disciplinary courses offered at the department of IR, under the guidance of highly-qualified academicians, are designed to provide students with the skills and abilities applicable to a variety of professional careers in both public and private sectors, nationally and internationally. Through this endeavor of strong critical thinking, communication and analytical skills, commitment of both staff and students; individually and collectively, we help advance the knowledge and practice of students in various fields. Equipped with the skills provided, each student is able to exhibit the ability to apply knowledge, critically evaluate and analyse problems, and communicate effectively and confidently in various careers which are available to him or her both nationally and internationally. Job Opportunities: Graduates of International Relations have the ample opportunities to work as faculty members(in all universities and colleges for IR, Political Science and related subjects), research analysts(in think tanks/ research centers, regional, international organizations & NGOs), current affairs analyst (in media), writers (in newspapers etc). Further, a cash subject for CSS, ISI and PMG competitive examinations.

Examination: 1. A student shall be evaluated in each course on the basis of quizzes, class assignments, midterm and final term examinations. 40% marks shall be reserved for quizzes, class assignments, midterm tests and 60% marks for the final term examinations. 2. The terminal examinations will be held at the end of each semester on the dates to be fixed by the Controller of Examinations in consultation with the HoDs/centers/colleges. 3. A “Seminar Course” offered by a dept shall/shall not be subject to final term examinations. A “Seminar Course” may be marked /graded by the teacher concerned on the basis of student’s performance in the course. The same will be conveyed to the Controller of Examinations for the purpose of record and notification of result accordingly. 4. A student shall be eligible to appear in the terminal examinations provided that:-

a. he/she has been on the rolls of the University during that semester; b. has registered himself/herself for the courses of study, and has attended, not less than 80% of the lectures/seminars delivered to his/her class in each course. c. has paid all the University dues including tuition fee and other charges, etc, by commencement of the semester. d. In case a student joins a course after it has started, he/she will be responsible for any missed quizzes, assignments and lectures. The marks in missed quizzes, assignments etc., will be considered ZERO while make-up tests, and assignments etc., can be arranged in consultation with the teacher concerned and Head of the Department.

Change/Drop of Courses: 1. A student may change or drop course(s) or convert a credit course into a non-credit course, or vice-versa, within 15 days from the date of commencement of a semester on the recommendations of the teacher(s) and the Head of the Department concerned. The Head of Dept may allow registration/change or drop of course(s) after the due dates subject to the payment of late fee of Rs.500 per course. 2. No registration or change of course(s) shall be allowed after 22 days from the date of commencement of the semester. 3. No drop of course(s) or change of a non-credit course to credit course or of a credit course to a non-credit course shall be allowed after 30 days from the date of commencement of the semester. 4. A student dropping all the registered courses or choosing not to register in any course during a semester will deem to have dropped the semester. Courses withdrawn before the mid-semester examination will not be recorded.

5. Courses withdrawn three weeks before the commencement of the final examination will be recorded on the transcript with a grade ‘W’ after which withdrawal of the course will not be allowed. 6. A student on the recommendations of HoD concerned and the Dean, Faculty of Contemporary Studies and subject to approval of the President NDU may change from one department to another department within 15 days after the commencement of the semester. This concession shall be applicable to the students of the first semester only. Promotion: 1. The minimum pass marks for each course shall be 50%. A student obtaining less than 50% marks in any course shall be deemed to have failed in that course. 2. If a student fails to appear in the final term examination in a course(s) on medical or any other reasons, he/she shall be treated as absent and failed, and be awarded “F” grade. Such a student shall be required to appear in the final term examination in the subsequent semester in the subjects in which he/she was allowed an “F” grade. 3. A student shall repeat the compulsory and optional courses in which he/she failed, as soon as the course(s) are offered next. He has to re-register in the course (s) in which failed and has to attend at least 80 % lectures and has to pay prescribed charges per course for registration in that course(s). 4. No student shall be allowed to continue his/her studies beyond six semesters (except PhD) under any circumstances. 5. Grading grid.

90% and above A+

80% to 89.99% A

70% to 79.99% B+

65% to 69.99% B

60% to 64.99% C+

Discipline: The following, among others, shall constitute acts of indiscipline cognizable under University regulations:- 1. Violation of public morals, such as the use of indecent and filthy language; undesirable remarks and gestures; acts of moral turpitude: disorderly behavior like abusing, quarrelling, fighting, insolence towards others use of force. 2. Indulgence in acts which may cause insult or physical injury to the students, teachers, officers, staff of the University or any other person. 3. Defiance of a University Authority. 4. Spreading by word of mouth or written material religious, sectarian, ethnic, regional or linguistic conflicts/hatred. 5. Impersonation, giving false information, willful suppression of information, cheating or deceiving. 6. Possession, carrying or use of any type of weapons/fire-arms or explosive material within the university premises. 7. Damaging any University property, including building, equipment, vehicle, etc. in any manner.

8. Using any University property, including building, equipment, vehicle, etc, without lawful authority. 9. Sale, distribution or consumption of intoxicants on the campus. 10. Use of student organizations for furthering the cause of a political party. 11. Circulation by word of mouth or in written form material derogatory to Pakistan, Armed Forces of Pakistan, Islam or any other religion. 12. Allowing or abetting entry to the premises of the University of expelled students or anti-social elements. 13. Obstructing the functioning of the University or causing disruption of teaching/research/other activities.

Minor Penalties/Punishments

Censuring or warning in writing.

Probation for a specific period.

A fine which may amount up to Rs. 1000/-.

Withholding of a certificate of good moral character.

Deprivation from the benefits/privileges enjoyed by the student(s) of the University.

Withholding of Examination Results.

Major Penalties/Punishments

Fine commensurate with nature and extent of misconduct to a maximum of Rs.5000/- .

Cancellation of hostel accommodation.

Cancellation of financial benefits/concessions.

Suspension of admission and ban on entry in the premises of the University for a specific period.

Library

Founded in 1970, the National Defence University Library Islamabad, over the years progressed and expanded significantly. It is now one of the well organized academic cum research libraries of the defence institutions and the capital as well. Its collection is a blend of books, research papers, professional journals, newspaper clippings and digital databases. The library is stocked with 70,000 books, professional journals and other materials on subjects of interest including military history, defence and security studies, nuclear studies, international relations, peace and conflict studies, governance and public policy, economics, politics, international relations, Pakistan affairs, Islam, etc. The books have been classified using Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme (DDC).

By virtue of its dynamic and user friendly services, the library is playing vital role in research support activities. The effective practices of acquisition, organization and dissemination of information have been highly valuable in extension of services to the researchers.
