Product Description

PROMATECT®-FW is a new generation of non-combustible mineral bound PROMAXON® boards. They have asmooth matt upper surface and are off-white in colour. Using Promat’s PROMAXON® technology, PROMATECT®-FW has a superior fire performance, workability, and surface finish to most other fire protection boards. Its high fireperformance generally means lower thicknesses can be used, leading to reduced costs and lower weights.

Workability

Cutting: Boards can be cut using a sheet saw withhardened steel teeth, a jig-saw, or a power saw with atungsten carbide tipped blade. It can also be scribedand broken over a straight edge.

Planing & sanding: The edges of the board are easilyplaned, bevelled etc, using rasps or a surform.Conventional papers are adequate for sanding.

Drilling: Generally, the boards do not require to be pre-drilled, but if they do need to be drilled this can becarried out with hand operated or power drills with highspeed drill bits.

Stapling: The boards can be readily fixed usingstaples. If the preferred fixing method varies from thatshown in the relevant detail please consult the PromatTechnical Department. Generally, fixings should not becloser than 40mm from the corners of each board.

Jointing: The board joints do not have to be filled forfire protection purposes providing any joint gap doesnot exceed 2-3mm. If the board is to be painted orplastered, the joints can be filled with eitherPROMAPLAST® or a standard gypsum filler. The latterwill require the board to be sealed with two coats ofdiluted PVA as described below under ‘plastering’.

Plastering: As the board already has a plastered finishand is available with tapered edges, the most common

method of finishing is by only covering the joints withscrim and filler (see ‘jointing’). However, if thecomplete surface is being plastered 3mm ofPROMAPLAST® can be applied without sealant.Alternatively seal the board with at least two coats ofdiluted PVA (coat 1 - water : PVA, 5:1, coat 2 - water: PVA, 1:3) and apply 3mm of a standard finishingplaster. The plaster manufacturer’s recommendationsshould be followed at all times.

Painting: With water based paints, at least two coatsare required. a slightly diluted first coat should beused. In areas that are liable to get knocked orscratched and for oil based paints, a suitable alkaliresisting primer should be used. The manufacturer’srecommendations should be followed at all times.

Tiling: Ceramic tiles can normally be applied usingready-mixed acrylic tile adhesive. Other types of tile, for example, thick marble conglomerate, will requirethe boards to be sealed with a suitable primer beforeapplying a cementitious adhesive. Therecommendation of the tile manufacturer and/or areputable adhesive manufacturer should be followedat all times.

Papering: Please consult the Promat TechnicalDepartment.

PROMATECT®-FW is available with either a square edge or a tapered edge. Other sizes and thicknesses areavailable on request, depending on quantity.

Handling

Boards should be carried on their edge and notdropped onto the ground, trestles etc.

Storage

All boards should be stored flat, clear of the groundand well protected from the weather and physicaldamage. The packing provided should not beregarded as sufficient protection for storage in theopen.

Health & Safety & Waste Management

A health and safety data sheet is available from thePromat Technical Department and, as with any othermaterials, should be read before working with theboard. The board is not classified as a dangeroussubstance and so no special provisions are requiredregarding the carriage and disposal of the product tothe landfill. They can be placed in an on-site skip withother general building waste which should bedisposed of by a registered contractor.

Limitations

PROMATECT®-FW, if fixed in accordance with Promatrecommendations, will not sag or fall away, providingthe area is not permanently wet, humid or poorlyventilated. The product is not suitable for exposedexternal use.

Promat Firewall Systems

Promat Firewall non-loadbearing partitions comprise single layers of PROMATECT®-FW secured to a lightweightsteel ‘C’ section or ‘I’ section stud and track frame. They can provide 60, 90 and 120 minutes fire protection (integrityand insulation). The single layer constructions are both cost effective and space saving solutions for lightweight firerated partitions. The partitions also provide strong systems with a good acoustic performance. Their superior surfaceand tapered edges lead to rapid finishing and decorating.

Design Considerations

The following points are some of the factors which should be considered when determining the correct specificationto ensure a wall or partition will provide the required fire performance. Further advice can of course be obtained fromthe Promat Technical Department.

Studwork: The design of studwork should be adequate for the height and length of the partition and its location inthe building. Please see performance tables 1 and 2.

Deflection: When differential movement is expected a deflection head detail is required. See solutions in theApplication Details.

Partition length: A vertical movement joint should be located at maximum 10m centres in long partition runs. Seesolutions in Application Details.

Cavity Barriers: The building regulations guidance documents specify where provision of cavity barriers arerequired.

Loadbearing Walls/Partitions: Our PROMATECT®-FW partitions provide examples of non-loadbearing solutions. Forloadbearing elements, please consult the Promat Technical Department.

Service Penetrations: Care needs to be taken in detailing a suitable fire-stopping system around any penetration ofthe partition by services to ensure a) the fire-stopping material remains in situ b) fire and smoke do not penetratethe partition. Allowance must be made for thermal movement of the services in both ambient and fire conditions toensure loads are not applied to the partition linings. PROMASEAL® penetration seals are generally suitable for thisapplication. See typical solutions in Application Details, and for further information, please consult the PromatTechnical Department.

Fire Doors & Glazing: Tested or assessed door and/or glazed assemblies should always be used eg. PromatSYSTEMGLAS®. In most cases additional framework will be required to prevent loads being applied to the partition. For further advice consult the Promat Technical Department.

Adjoining Walls, Roofs, Beams & Coloumns: It is vital that any building elements that the partition is connected toshould not collapse or deflect excessively in the event in fire. Care should also be taken that the fire integrity andfire insulation of the system are not comprised by structural beams and coloumns within the partition. This willgenerally mean that intumescent coatings cannot be used for the protection of structural steelwork in theseapplications.
