Creating a positive and dynamic learning community where all students strive to achieve their full potential to enable active

participation in tomorrow’s world

Principal’s Message

Academic

Congratulations to Y12 for com-

pleting their half yearly exams. This

should be the next launching pad

for them in their studies.

Congratulations to the many stu-dents across the school who have completed quality work, including submission of assessment tasks over the term and achieved their learning goals from the start of the year.

Feedback from the Y11 Elevate

Education study seminars was pos-

itive from students about the value

of the day. Ninety-five percent of

students would recommend the

seminars to other students and

described the seminars as time

well spent. Below is a sample of

student comments:

How would you rate the overall program? “It actually helped me to under-stand how to effectively study and focus” “Ten out of ten. I learnt a lot and realised what I need to improve myself” “The program is great as it gives you an advantage with study skills and time management”.

What was the most important thing you learnt today?

“That I don’t have to give up the things I enjoy doing” “Time management. Don’t overload myself with work but don’t ignore it either” “Practice tests are good for studying” “By using the syllabus” “How to manage time and procrasti-nating” “Study for a short amount of time but constant” “How to develop a study timetable around stuff” “Doing the things you love first and then fitting homework around it” “Past papers online”.

Happy Holidays and Reading

We wish all families a happy

holidays. It is timely to remind

our children and young people

to be diligent and make good

decisions with crossing roads

and other safety matters.

Deputy Principals

We are moving into Week 11

next week so term one is

coming to an end, there has

been so many exciting things

happening over the past cou-

ple of weeks and the stu-

dents are definitely looking

forward to the holidays. The

Easter break gave students a

chance to refresh for the last

two weeks.

Over the past week Yr 12

have started their half yearly

higher school certificate ex-

ams, students have been

working very hard leading up

to the exams and preparing

well.

Page 3: Progress with Pride - Wadalba Community School · Progress with Pride Wadalba Community School Newsletter 2016 Term 1, Week 11 “Learning for all is first and foremost” (School

At the beginning of Term 2 when the

students receive their results will be

an excellent time for them to reflect

and evaluate the current progress they

are making to ensure they are ade-

quately preparing for the Trial HSC or

if practices need to change. I am defi-

nitely available for both students and

parents/carers if any assistance is re-

quired in any area.

We are continuing with getting to class

on time initiative where

student are sent to a Deputy to get a

note to get back into class. Students

are responding well and moving to

class on the first warning bell.

There are several maintenance proce-

dures occurring across the school over

the next week and into the school holi-

days. Some of our demountables are

being moved, the Community Centre is

getting painted and the primary play-

ground is being upgraded with syn-

thetic grass. We are continually trying

to maintain our excellent facilities.

We are fortunate enough to have a

“Stop and Drop” zone at the front of

the school to assist us with the

student’s safety to and from school.

Can Parents and carers please ensure

that they drop off their child and pull

away safely as some people are park-

ing for long periods of time and it is

causing congestion near the pedestri-

an crossing.

Over the school holidays can we get

have a look to see if last years school

jumper still fits so that we can contin-

ue to keep up the great effort with full

school uniform. A reminder to the girls

that tights are not part of the uniform

yet blue pants for Yr7-9 and black

pants 10-12 are acceptable.

Thank you to the students and

parents for a successful term and

look forward to productive term

2.

Ms Jane Harris

ENGLISH REPORT

As Term 1 draws to a close, the

English Faculty would like to con-

gratulate all students on their

excellent work and attitude in

this first part of the year.

Our Year 12 Advanced and

Standard students have now

completed the Area of Study and

Module B studies and assess-

ment. A group of students

attended the ETA Area Of Study

Day in Sydney earlier this term

and we would like to thank Mrs

Louie and Mr Williams for their

organisation of this event. Year

12 English Studies classes have

just completed their mandatory

study ‘We Are Australians’ with

their assessment task due on the

first day back in Term 2.

Year 11 Standard and Advanced

students are currently preparing

for their Half Yearly Examination.

Please note there will not be an

examination for English Studies

until the end of Year 11.

Could Year 11 students who wish

to change from Standard/

Advanced to English Studies, or

from Advanced to Standard,

please see Mrs Holmes this term

to receive the necessary forms.

These forms must be signed and

returned before the end of term

to make the changes as smooth

as possible for both students and

staff.

Students in Years 7 to 10 have com-

pleted a range of writing and litera-

cy tasks in Term 1 and, again, we

congratulate them on their work

ethic and levels of engagement.

Year 7 Academic Classes completed

a study of Narratives including the

Hero’s Journey and Reading Circles,

while Year 8 have studied Poetry

and Shakespeare. Year 9 have com-

pleted the Area of Study and a Visu-

al Texts study of different types of

covers. Year 10 completed a close

study a Poet’s work and Websites as

visual texts. The standard of work

produced in classroom and assess-

ment tasks has been very pleasing –

well done!

Next term our junior classes will

engage in novel studies with a relat-

ed assessment task due at the end

of the term. Years 7 and 9 will begin

the term with NAPLAN preparation

before the NAPLAN tests take place

in Week 3.

Term 2 will also see some exciting

excursions. Mrs Jones has organised

a visit to Sydney to see a perfor-

mance of The Shoehorn Sonata for

Year 12 Standard students and Mr

Atmore will be organising an excur-

sion for Year 9 students to attend

the Sydney Opera House for a Bell

Shakespeare production.

Notes for this excursion will be is-

sued early in the term. Meanwhile,

Mrs Louie and Miss Kokinovic will

also have the Public Speaking and

Debating events underway so it will

be a busy term!

We wish everyone a happy and

restful holiday!

Middle School Report

In Humanities this term students have been engaged in the nov-el, Ranger’s Apprentice, set in Medi-eval times. The novel follows the journey of Will, the main character, as he develops from a young boy, to a young hero!

The students have enjoyed pre-dicting the upcoming events in the story and the many discussions raised regarding the various con-flicts that arise. Sketching the different weapons and the beast like animals that threaten the char-acters has also been enjoyed by the students.

As we near the end of the story students are excited and hoping to find out who Will’s father really is!

Please remind students that they need to bring a reading book for every Humanities lesson.

Art and About

50 Visual Art students travelled to

Sydney last week to view exhibi-

tions at the Art Gallery of NSW.

Students we split into groups with

Ms Norris, Ms Florido and Ms

Barnes to explore the gallery.

ArtExpress proved to be another

crowd pleaser with all students

amazed at the talent and variety of

themes past HSC students created.

Our Yr12 students eager and a

luitter scared to get back to work-

ing on their own Body of Works.

The Binnale of Sydney had lots of

colour and encouraged students to

interact with the artworks and al-

lowed them to colour and leave

their mark at the gallery alongside

these amazing artworks.

Yr9 Visual Arts students were excit-

ed to see works they had been

studying and discussing in class on

the walls of the Gallery.

Seeing Brett Whiteley’s favourite

colour Ultra Marine in his works

and Picasso’s cubist style with

colour and shape made the prac-

ticals works in class seem more

personal. Standing in front of one

of Ms Norris’s favourite works by

John Olsen helped them to un-

derstand and appreciate art even

more.

Students are to be congratulated

on their exceptional behaviour

and engagement at the gallery.

Wadalba Showcases at the

Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Wadalba was one of five schools

selected across NSW to represent

their various districts.

The District Exhibits is one of the

most widely viewed displays at the

Royal Easter Show, the school sec-

tion just in the room beside is a

smaller scale of these amazing dis-

plays.

The CAPA GAT Visual Arts crew

were handed this enormous task

earlier this year and had their work

cut out for them.

Lots of hard work painting, seeding

and arranging produce they were

able to create a beautiful visual

presentation of the Science and Ag

departments vision. Firestick to

Firewall is a representation of the

timeline of Agriculture used across

Australia by the indigenous people

through to modern day computers.

Well done to all involved. Next year

we are planning another fabulous

visual display.

PDHPE

We would like to remind all students

in Years 7-10 about our school and

faculty policy in relation to bringing

and wearing correct PDHPE uniform

for all practical lessons. For health

and hygiene purposes, students are

required to use the change rooms

provided by the school before and at

the end of practical lessons to change

into their uniforms. Students that fail

to meet these requirements without

valid reason will be issued lunch

detentions by their class teacher.

The PE uniform is made up of a dark

blue polo shirt with the school

emblem, light blue on the sides and

blue piping around the collar and na-

vy blue shorts with the school em-

blem. In winter, students may be

able to wear navy blue tracksuit

pants. TSP shirts can be worn on

Tuesdays (for sport) or for PE lessons.

Students are unable to wear the light

blue school shirt for practical lessons.

The TSP Rugby League training uni-

form is not to be worn to school as

uniform, it can be worn for TSP practi-

cal uniforms, TSP sessions or PDHPE

practical lessons only.

Sport

Students in years 7-10 are currently

making selections for Term 2 sport.

Parents and carers are reminded to

have a conversation with their son or

daughter in relation to making an ap-

propriate sport choice to reduce the

need for changes to be made during

the term. Mr Benham will be our new

sport coordinator for the remainder

of 2016 as Mr McLennan has accept-

ed a transfer to Tomaree High School

from the beginning of Term 2.

Mr Benham can be contacted in

the PDHPE staff room and will

be dealing with all questions

and concerns in relation to

Sport for the remainder of the

year.
