THIS WEEK’S CLASSROOM VISIT
It was P Week last week and the famous Prep ‘P’ song was in full voice. It was also pyjama day with preps and many teachers taking the opportunity to wear their pyjamas to school on a cold wintery day!
This week we held our Grade 6 production, Rock Bottom. For those of you who were able to watch the
show, there is no need to describe how fabulous it was. For those that missed it, get yourself a copy of
the DVD!
Congratulations to our team of teachers, parents, students and of course, Mrs Pam Wood and Mrs Kristy
Phang – our wonderful directors!

STAFFING NEWS
As the term comes to an end, we farewell Mrs Brooke McKee and in doing so we wish her and her
husband Blaed all the best as we all eagerly await the arrival of their new addition to their family. Maddy
Nelson will be returning to Templeton to teach 5B for the remainder of the year.
Mrs Wingate will be on leave all of next term and will be covered by Mrs Marni Cousins, whilst Mrs
Cunningham will also be taking leave for the first five weeks of Term 3. 3C will be covered by Mrs Karen
Neil.
Ms Forrest and Ms McGrath will have an extended break in the first week of Term 3 and will be covered
by Mrs Linda Ross and Mrs Anitta Merbach respectively, whilst Ms Potter will be away for a few weeks
early in the term as well.
HOLIDAY PROGRAM
A reminder that our holiday program will be operating throughout the July holidays. For further

HOLIDAY READING
One particular piece of research presented earlier this month at the Education State School Leadership
Conference (from Dr Douglas Fisher at San Diego University ) really struck a chord. The message was
about how daily reading impacts learning outcomes:
This research goes to show how big an impact daily reading has (and why a major aspect of our homework program is based on regular home reading). As parents we have a big responsibility to support our children’s reading development. The best thing that you can do to help your child is to make a daily time to enjoy books together. For the younger students this means finding a time to sit on the couch together or snuggle up in bed to read together each day. Reading in the younger years will often be mum or dad reading aloud to a child as they begin to make connections themselves and start to join in. Home reading books give our students the opportunity to have a go themselves and to practice what they are being taught at school.

There are many things to learn including knowing that the picture gives a clue as to what the words are
about, when we read we start from the left and move to the right, and that one word I say is one word I
point to. Whenever we read, what we say should always make sense. If it doesn’t, we need to have
another try. Reading is about making meaning from print. Whenever your child ‘self-corrects’ (has
another go when something doesn’t sound right), we should praise them so they get into the habit of
knowing this is what good readers do. If you find it hard to not stop and correct every little word (which
holds up the flow of the reading), you might encourage your child to read to a pet these holidays.
Hearing mum and dad read a great story aloud should not be restricted just to the younger grade levels
either. In the upper grades we constantly read great novels, poems or extracts to the students at school
to model how good readers make sense of what they read. As a parent, you can have a big effect on how
your child perceives reading – do they see you reading for pleasure as well as to find an answer for a
question you have? Have you read aloud to them your favourite books from when you were their age?
Catching a loved ones’ enthusiasm for reading rubs off!
In the middle and upper grades parents can help their children to become ‘thinkers’ as they read.
Learning to read becomes less about being able to ‘say out loud what the words are’ (decoding) and
moves to ensuring we comprehend or understand what we have read. You can help your child greatly by
discussing stories with them.
There are different kinds of questions you can ask your child during and after reading to help guide their
understanding. Questions which help to find answers that are directly stated in a book could start with:
What happened…? How many…? How did…? Who…? What is…? Which…?
Questions which help children to think a little more deeply and start to ‘read between the lines’ by
thinking about what the author is telling us may include: Why did…? What was…? What do you think
about…? Can you explain…? How was this similar to…?
We can help children to think even more deeply about what they are reading by discussing what they
think, feel and wonder about what they read. Some good questions to ask about this level of thinking are:
How would you…? Do you agree…? What would have happened if…? How might…? What effect does…? If
you were…? What would you…?
Being able to read is a gateway to being a life-long learner, so consider using the holidays as a chance to
connect with your children through daily opportunities to read.

ANAPHYLAXIS
Anaphylaxis is a severe, rapidly progressive allergic reaction that is potentially life threatening. The most
common allergens in school-aged children are peanuts, eggs, tree nuts (e.g. cashews), cow’s milk, fish
and shellfish, wheat, soy, sesame, latex, certain insect stings and medication. We have twelve students
who have Anaphylaxis. This means that these students suffer severe allergic reactions to certain foods
and factors in the environment. Their allergic reactions can be life threatening.
I would like to remind parents and students that, as part of the school’s Anaphylaxis Action Plan, under
no circumstances should food be shared or swapped with any other children at school. I am asking all
parents to please reinforce this issue with their children at home.
COMMUNITY ANNOUNCMENTS
UNIFORM
In the cold weather it is important that our students dress warmly in correct Templeton uniform. Our
parents and staff, have very high expectations of our students wearing correct uniform; 98% of our
students follow our guidelines perfectly and I acknowledge you for that. Only uniform purchased from
our Uniform Shop is School Council approved, cheap versions bought at Target are not approved.
Although they match the description they don’t match the quality, style and colour. A reminder that
Templeton beanies and scarves can be purchased from our uniform shop for $7.00 each. Although not
sold at the moment, green gloves are preferred on those very cold mornings!
For the 2%, the holidays are a great opportunity to raise the standard of dress to meet our community
expectations for Semester 2. Summer dresses, jewellery and shorts in particular are on our radar!
A reminder that we finish at 2.30pm tomorrow, last day of Term 2.
On behalf of all the staff we would like to wish all students and families a wonderful holiday. It has been
a great Term 2 and we look forward to what Term 3 will bring.

Dear Parents/Guardians,
Recently there have been several occasions where payments have not been received in time for
planned student activities causing disruption and uncertainty to students and staff on the day of the
event. To alleviate this disruption please note that in future all payments for camps, sports or
activities that are posted on Xuno must be paid by the due by date.
The majority of parents have taken up the opportunity to pre-pay for all excursions by paying the Bulk
Excursion Levy (BEL) of $125. After paying the BEL all that is required is permission to be given for
each event on the Xuno portal. This option is still available.
Late payments may not be accepted unless authorised prior to the due date.

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge 2019
The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge has begun and it is an expectation that all Templeton Primary School students will take part. It is not a competition, but a personal challenge for children to read or experience a set number of books by August 23rd 2019.
To complete the challenge, students in Prep to Grade 2 will experience 30 books with their teachers at school, and students in Grades 3 - 6 are challenged to read 15 books. Therefore it is not necessary for students in the junior school (Prep - 2) to add books to their lists themselves.
Students in Grades 3 - 6 can add books to their list online by logging on using the website below, or via the direct link on the Templeton website. Usernames and passwords will be handed out by classroom teachers.
Once the challenge is completed students will need to print out their book list, have it signed by a parent or guardian to confirm books have been read and then give it to their teacher. All children who meet the challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier.

FOR PRE-SCHOOL & PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN
This is a “Whole Brain Development” program, students will learn mental and manual calculations ( addition, sub-
traction, multiplication & division ) by using abacus with speed and accuracy. We organise Annual International
Abacus Grading Examination with ISO 9001 : 2008 award certificate.
