What has been happening in 4P

Our 4P classroom has been alive with learning in these last few weeks. We started a unit of work in Geography called “Places are Similar and Different” which looks at many aspects of our environment. We have also been focussing on this theme in English.

We have been watching a series of short clips on www.coolaustralia.org all about the ocean. This has covered topics such as industrial fishing, pollution in our oceans (including rubbish) and coral bleaching due to climate change. This has inspired our writing and we have written persuasive texts aimed at convincing the reader to take care of our ocean using high modality words. We have looked at the language Sir David Attenborough uses in his documentaries and incorporated this into our writing. We also participated in activities to learn about persuasive devices such as: Emotional Appeal, Exaggeration, Bandwagon and Emotive Words, finding examples of these in magazines, TV advertisements and catalogues. Some students have produced their best writing yet!

In Mathematics we have been looking at ‘Position’. In this unit, we have learnt the points on a compass and studied different maps and legends. Students have been learning to locate points on a map using coordinates. In one activity, students worked in pairs and hid an object in the classroom. The other student had to locateobject using positional language, a compass or directions. We also created our very own maps incorporating grid references and a legend.

We are set to enjoy the last remaining weeks of Year 4 and will be going over some aspects of our learning that require revision so we can consolidate it before going into Stage 3 next year.

Secondly, did you know that much of our ocean’s coral is turning completely white? This is called coral bleaching. When water is too warm, corals will expel the kelp living in their tissues causing the coral to turn completely white. Coral bleaching is a terrible thing for our ocean because when coral bleaching happens the coral usually dies. Eventually, if we don’t stop this, we will have no coral left. This leads to fish having no home and then they die. Then, larger predators have nothing to eat, so they die. If we don’t stop coral bleaching now, our oceans will be destroyed!

Thirdly, when you throw your plastic packaging away where does it go? When we dump rubbish at the rubbish tip it produces toxic gases called greenhouse gases. This happens when green waste and food rots under mountains of other rubbish. This puts extra toxins into our atmosphere and it is starting to affect our climate badly. For every wheelie bin we fill up at school and at home there is about another 65 bins full of rubbish and waste that we never see. It has already been thrown out before it gets to us. We can stop this. Be part of the solution not the pollution.

KB Kindergarten visit Year 9 Careers Day

KB Kindergarten students dressed up on Wednesday in conjunction with Year 9’s careers day. Kindergarten students were so excited as they were able to dress up as what they would like to be when they grow up. KB students visited the high school hall and confidently spoke into the microphone to tell their audience what they wanted to be. We had lots of Police Officers, Vets, Teachers, Firemen, Ballerina and Chefs. We even had an Artist and one student who would like to be a famous Singer. It was a very special and exciting day for all of KB.

Kindergarten Orientation

Each Thursday for the past 4 weeks we have welcomed the Kindergarten 2019 students to Wadalba Community School. It was such a wonderful opportunity to get to know the students and for them to have the chance to visit our school and classrooms. They have had a wonderful time playing with their new friends, listening to stories and learning songs. On Thursday it was the final orientation session. Parents of future students toured the school while the new Kindy students prepared to entertain their parents at the Family Assembly. Kindergarten did an amazing job and got up on stage without any worries and sang ‘5 speckled frogs’ for the audience. At the conclusion of the assembly all Kindergarten students were awarded with their Kindergarten Orientation Certificates and were presented with a book.

Year 6-7 Sports Day

As part of our transition program here at WCS, students participate in a sports day up in the high school with the other Year 6 students from local schools who are enrolled at WCS for Year 7 2019. Students were put into mixed groups with potential combinations for their main classes next year. This can be quite a daunting prospect for our students as some were not placed in a group with any of their peers from Wadalba meaning they needed to step out of their comfort zone and get to know some new faces. Games like Oztag, Capture the Flag and Golden Child were played in a rotation system with teams scoring points for team work, inclusivity and skill. The winning two teams were rewarded with an ice-block at the end of the day. Students enjoyed the opportunity to be treated like high school students and you could feel the nervous excitement from students as they met new people and prepared themselves for next year. It was a great day and we thank the high school staff for the free sausage sizzle and for putting on such a wonderful event.

Gold Awards Reminder

Gold Awards are a very prestigious award at the very top of our merit system. Gold Awards are only

presented at our end of year Presentation Day which will be held on Monday 17th December.

Our system is as follows: 5 Commendations = Bronze Award

3 Bronze Awards = Silver Award 3 Silver Awards + Participation in extra-curricular

school activities + participation in a community event = Gold Award

If you believe your child is eligible for a Gold Award at Presentation Day this year, please have your child bring their 3 silver awards to school to Ms Sanday by Friday 16th December. Ms Sanday will also chat to them around the other award criteria when they hand in their awards. There can be no extensions on this date as the medallions are sent away to be engraved with all of our other awards and trophies. If you have any questions around Gold Awards, please contact Ms Sanday.
