SASKATOON WDM EDUCATION PROGRAMS 2017-2018 There’s no better way to teach Saskatchewan students than to use programs and resources with Saskatchewan inspired connections, links and examples. A treasure of Saskatchewan history awaits the over 20,000 students who visit a WDM annually as part of a school trip. Our Boomtown street is filled with the sights and sounds of 1910 Saskatchewan. This is just one of the amazing exhibits in the WDM Saskatoon. Students can follow a fictional family through 100 years of Saskatchewan history. They can check out Saskatchewan inspired inventions in transportation and medicine or pay a visit to a phone booth and make a call using a rotary phone. So many experiences await! WDM exhibits, programs and resources help students relate to and grow their Saskatchewan roots. We grow many things in Saskatchewan. MUSEUM-LED PROGRAMSHarvest Demonstration - Grade 4Date: September 19 - 21, 2017Cost: $4 per student Length: 1.5 hoursThis event, in its 43rd year, recreates harvests of years gone by with a focus on the progression of harvesting methods over time.

Seed Survivor - Grades 3 - 6Dates: September 25, 2017 - March 2, 2018Length: 2 hoursIn partnership with Agrium and Agriculture in the Classroom Saskatchewan, students are guided through a curriculum-based program that includes a hands-on lesson on growing healthy plants, computer games, sunflower seed planting and a scavenger hunt.

Giddy Up and Whoa - PreschoolDate: October 2 - 6, 2017 & May 7 - 11, 2018Cost: $3 per student + min. $50 charge for wagon rideLength: 2 hoursLearn about horses, how important they are to us today and especially to people a long time ago. Students will take a wagon ride, visit animals in the barn and tour the Museum.

Toys of Yesteryear - Grade 1Dates: November 6 - December 22, 2017Cost: $3.50 per student Length: 2 hoursSit in old-fashioned desks and experience the life of a student at a one-room schoolhouse. Students will listen to a story and see a variety of 1910 toys.

Christmas 1910 - Grade 3Dates: December 5 - 18, 2017Cost: $4 per student Length: 2 hoursStudents will learn how much items cost in 1910 while practicing budgeting skills as they shop on Boomtown Street with an imaginary dollar. Make a take-home craft and tour the Once Upon A Christmas display. A teacher-led option is also available.

Museum Days - Grades 2 - 6Date: May 29 - 30, 2018Cost: $4 per student Length: 2 hoursStudents learn by doing as they try their hand at old-fashioned skills, take a wagon ride and meet Museum volunteers who share their skills.

Self-Guided ToursDates: Offered year roundCost: $2.50 per studentTour the Museum at your own pace and spend more time in areas that interest your students.

Guided Tours - Grades 9 - 12Dates: Offered year roundCost: $2.50 per studentMuseum volunteers lead your group, highlighting artifacts and exhibits that tell the Saskatchewan story.

Self-Guided Scavenger HuntsDates: Offered year roundCost: $2.50 per studentWork together to answer challenging, age-appropriate questions about Saskatchewan heritage.

DEMONSTRATIONSAll demonstrations are Museum-led.

Butter MakingCost: $15 up to 24 people; $30 for up to 48 peopleLength: ½ hourHand-churn butter and get a sample to taste.

Ice Cream MakingCost: $15 up to 24 people; $30 up to 48 peopleLength: ½ hourUse a hand-crank ice cream freezer to make ice cream and get a sample to taste.

Horse & Wagon RidesCost: $50 up to 50 people, additional riders $1 eachLength: ½ hourGo on a wagon or sleigh ride with volunteers and their horses around the Museum grounds.

TEACHER-LED PROGRAMS

Discovery Box Programs - Grades K - 12Dates: Offered year round Cost: $3 per student Length: 2 hoursThese in-Museum programs are full of touchable artifacts and photographs that promote experiential learning and inquiry. Each is complemented by in-classroom lesson plans.

A Christmas Long Ago - KindergartenDates: November 6 - December 22, 2017Cost: $3 per student Length: 2 hoursHear a story about the festive season during pioneer times, see what types of gifts were given, decorate the tree with homemade ornaments, then tour Museum galleries including the Once Upon A Christmas display.

Wheels and Runners - Grade 2Dates: January, March, April, May 2018Cost: $3 per student Length: 2 hoursLearn how transportation has played an important role in the development of Saskatchewan communities. Students interact with artifacts, take part in a story, make a take-home craft and tour the Museum.

Smarter Science Better Buildings - Grade 7Dates: January 30 - February 16, 2018Cost: $3 per student Length: 2 hoursThis hands-on program allows students to explore the concepts of heat and temperature through the practical application of making our homes more energy efficient.

Check with Museum staff to find out about special programs that may be added throughout the year.
