PROGRAM GUIDE | JUNE 2020 | VOL. 39 NO. 6
You may notice that this monthly program guide is skinnier than it was last month, as if it went on a crash diet. There was indeed a crash of sorts, one that all of us are dealing with in one way or another: the economic fall-out from COVID-19.
PBS Hawai‘i is part of the local community. When our supporters suffer financial loss, we feel it, too. Many people are limiting their charitable giving. Our heart goes out to those who’ve been hard hit by effects of the pandemic.
As part of stewarding our resources, we’ve slimmed down this monthly program guide. But please note that we’re devoting the same number of pages as before to program highlights. Also, we’ll keep delivering our free weekly e-newsletter with more detailed programming information. Sign up for it at https://www.pbshawaii.org/newsletter-signup/
And most importantly, we continue to bring you the same quality programming.
Many viewers are appreciating this as they shelter at home, watching more PBS Hawai‘i offerings than usual. We’ve especially heard from viewers of our weekly live forums on Insights on PBS Hawai‘i: COVID-19 in Hawai‘i, and HIKI NŌ featuring Student Reflections from home; from Passport viewers, accessing both new and archival PBS shows; and from parents introducing their
young children to our online PBS KIDS 24/7 channel, which is aligned with fun, educational video games.
Folks have been phoning or writing with kind sentiments including: “You’re a lifesaver for helping me educate my child at home.” “You bring us delight, beauty, wonder and information every day…” “I’m going through a hard time, but I feel better with the inspiration I get from your programs.”
Aloha is real and palpable and feeds heart and soul. From our PBS Hawai‘i Board of Directors and Staff, here’s wishing you aloha nui as you press through this challenging time and grow even stronger in adversity.
Hawai‘i is hurting, but we still encourage, uplift and help each other. We are not defined or diminished by our circumstances.
Masking my face but not my aloha!

The Mākaha Sons of Ni‘ihau released nearly two-dozen music albums, reconfigured their band member lineup multiple times, and endured a string of personal tragedies. Through most of the band’s history, Louis “Moon” Kauakahi was its backbone.
Kauakahi played a vital role with the Mākaha Sons as business manager, composer and guitarist, from the band’s beginnings in 1976 until his retirement in 2014.
Born and raised in Nānākuli on O‘ahu’s Leeward Coast, Kauakahi discovered his lifelong passion for music at Nānāikapono Elementary School, where he put together his first music arrangement in the sixth grade. His nickname is a tribute to Peter Moon, the late ‘ukulele and slack-key master. “I tried to do everything that Peter Moon did,” Kauakahi says.
The late Israel “Iz” Kamakawiwo‘ole is perhaps the most recognized former member of the band. Iz’s brother Skippy, Sam Gray, Sonny Lim, Melvin Amina, Abraham Nahulu, and brothers Jerome and John Koko were also in the band through the years. Iz and Skippy both died during the course of the band’s history, along with Kauakahi’s in-laws, sister-in-law and wife. “How do you get beyond the hurt?” he asks. “Each person is very unique in that sense. I kept doing something. In my doing numerous things, I managed to decompress.”
Kauakahi maintained a day job during the four decades he was with the band, and now works for the Lili‘uokalani Trust as a youth development specialist in the Wai‘anae area. “I retired twice, but I work hard now even after two retirements,” he says with a laugh. “A lot of times, friends would ask me, ‘Can you perform with us?’ I’d say, ‘Sure.’ ‘Can you do it, like, every week?’ I went, ‘Uh, then I wouldn’t be in retirement, would I?’”

ED GREEVYTuesday, June 9 at 7:30 pm
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS JUNE 2020
As a young man, Ed Greevy followed his passion for surf from his native Los Angeles to Honolulu. He arrived as the Save Our Surf movement was just ramping up, and it made him aware of threats to surfing breaks on the south shore. Waikīkī land development became his gateway to environmental, land use and sovereignty activism in Hawai‘i. For more than 40 years, Greevy photographed political struggles and the modern Hawaiian Sovereignty movement. He talks about capturing more than 100,000 images in his archive, many of them documenting land development conflicts, starting in the tumultuous 1970s in Hawai‘i.
Born This Way: Awa’s Story In New Zealand, Te Awarangi “Awa” Puna is an openly transgender Maori teen attending her final year at Kapiti College in Wellington, New Zealand. This documentary follows her journey from male to female as we see the support of her family and the hurdles she must overcome.
The RogersThis short film is an intimate glimpse into the lives of those who formed the first visible group of transgender men in the Pacific Islands - The Rogers of Samoa – as they build an outside oven, seek romance and prepare to perform a traditional men’s dance in public.
