Dear Girl Scouts, Family, and Friends,I can’t wait to… try something new!

We’re excited to see Girl Scouts across our Council explore new activities each year. We want you to have an amazing adventure with Girl Scouts! Whether it’s learning how ice cream gets from farm-to-table, to investigating mysteries at a crime lab, or exploring the night sky, we know Girl Scouts can’t wait to have fun!

The nearly 4,000 qualified volunteers in our Council can’t wait to teach girls they have the power to do anything in life. Girl Scouts would not be possible without the help of these outstanding women and men, so I’d like to extend a huge thank you to all of you! With your help, we know we will continue to see girls become more outgoing, make life-long friends, step outside their comfort zones, and develop the leadership skills they need to succeed in the world today.

We have so much in store for the 2013-2014 Girl Scout year – new programs, new ideas, not to mention, new members! I am confident this next Girl Scout year is going to be the best yet.

I can’t wait to... get started!

Sincerely,

Jamie Boersma

PLAN...Are you curious about how to plan for a Council- sponsored trip? Call your local Leadership Center to schedule a time for a Program staff member to come to you for an informational meeting on our upcoming trips. There is no commitment to pay a deposit at that time, but pay close attention to registration deadlines of the trips you are interested in. Girls must have a parent with them at the meeting.

On most trips, we allow girls that are interested to be part of setting the agenda. This planning will also help determine the final price of the trip. In this way, you can see the detailed work it takes to plan a trip and the cost value of those details. You will also be able to see and do the things you really want!

TRAVELTravel to amazing places with Girl Scouts! You can go around the Midwest for a fun-filled weekend or go further than you ever have before on the adventure of a lifetime! All travel opportunities in this section are sorted by date of the trip. Please note: There is a required deposit of $30 or the full cost of the trip for all travel experiences at the time of registration. The deposit is non-refundable if you cancel. However, if Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa cancels the trip, your deposit will be fully refunded. Grade levels are noted by each title. Use the included registration forms or register online. You will see this symbol Hh if a health history form is required with your registration. The form can be found online at girlscoutsiowa.org. Please see our website for all travel policies and procedures.

I want to go... how do I plan for and pay for my trip?

PAY...We hope that you can participate in as many adventures as you desire! The Council provides some fantastic opportunities to start the money earning/saving process:

• Participate in the Fall and Cookie Product Programs (see the Product Program flyer on page 31 for dates).

• You can apply Cookie Dough or Juliette Program Credits for an upcoming trip if you let us know before September 15, 2014. Please email, call, or talk to you local Leadership Center about using your funds in this way. See Product Program guidelines for more details.

• Apply for a grant through our Trip Financial Assistance form (found in the forms section of our website at girlscoutsiowa.org.)

• Troop money-earning opportunities (led by girls attending; specific for troop travel opportunities).

No one should expect to pay for an entire trip solely with money-earning opportunities or Product Program money earned. Even with those programs, some out-of-pocket expenses may arise. Through these programs, however, we hope to allow you the chance to begin the process of taking the trip(s) of a lifetime!

GSGI recognizes that girls need time to plan and fundraise for trips. We also strive for consistency. For these reasons we have planned progressive trips for Girl Scout Juniors through Ambassadors. As girls get older, the location will be a bit further away from home and the trip will be a bit longer.

These grade-level trips are for girls who have completed the grade specified. For example, a trip planned for Girl Scout Juniors is for girls who have completed 4th or 5th grade. These trips will be offered each summer and will remain the same destination.

REGISTRATION GUIDELINES

Following are the registration guidelines for our membership year 2013-2014. The listings in this book are sponsored by Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa to support group activities and the education and development of girls through their involvement in Girl Scouting. The fees cover items such as the costs of supplies, food, facility rental, awards/recognitions, patches, facilitator fees, insurance, printing, postage, and sometimes transportation.

It is so easy to register online! Go to our website at www.girlscoutsiowa.org. Be sure to read through the important registration guidelines that follow.

REGISTRATION PROCEDURES1. Registration is required for events. Your cash, check,

money order, credit/debit cards, Cookie Dough, Juliette Program Card, or Financial Aid Card will be processed and charged upon receipt of registration form. If your group/troop does not get into the event, you will be notified and will have the choice to either stay on the waiting list or have a refund processed immediately.

2. You are welcome to submit registrations online, by mail, or in person. Use the same name you gave when you completed your Girl Scout yearly membership registration (i.e. Elizabeth vs. Beth). Registrations will be handled on a first-come, first-serve basis; postmarks will be honored the same as walk-ins. If minimum registration numbers are not met, the event may be postponed or cancelled.

3. All participating girls must be registered, or register, as a Girl Scout. To register as a Girl Scout, just indicate that in the Membership Information section on the Individual Girls Form, and include the annual membership dues of $15 with the event registration and payment.

4. All forms must be complete, i.e. signatures, participant list, and full applicable payment. Write clearly when completing the registration form. Submit payment by cash (do not mail cash), checks, money order, credit/debit cards, and/or Financial Aid, Juliette Program card, or Cookie Dough cards. Registration and money may not be accepted at the actual event. Girls or adults whose fees are not prepaid may not be allowed to participate at the event. Make checks payable to Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa. Cash is only accepted during normal business hours. Financial Aid forms are found on our website.

5. There are event and camp calendars on our website that list all programs by grade level and/or camp. Descriptions are available in each calendar.

6. Registration cancellations can be handled by phone by calling the Des Moines Leadership Center.

7. Health History forms are required for any overnight program taking place at camp and any other program with an overnight stay of two nights or more. Look for opportunities marked in their description with this symbol Hh . You will find our Heath History form on our website at girlscoutsiowa.org.

8. The Council will provide confirmation to registered participants via email. If you have concerns regarding your registration, please call the Des Moines Leadership Center.

9. You must complete a separate form (online or paper) for each event you would like to attend.

IT’S EASY TO REGISTER ONLINE!Online registration is available on our website at www.girlscoutsiowa.org.

PLEASE NOTE: You will receive an official confirmation from the council noting that you are either in the event or on the waiting list.

If you have not heard from us two weeks before your event, please call us at 800-342-8389 or email us at [email protected].

REGISTER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

1. Please register your Girl Scout for any program as soon as possible. FALL VOLUNTEER RETREATNovember 8-10, 2013The Fall Volunteer Retreat is a weekend of fun, learning, and relaxation at Camp Sacajawea in Boone, IA. Sessions are for new and experienced volunteers. This year we are also offering sessions for our series/special event volunteers. Course offerings include, but aren’t limited to:

• New Leader Toolkit• Grade Level Essentials• Basic Out and About (BOA)• Journey Series Leadership• Games/ Songs• Ceremonies/Girl Scout Traditions

Visit girlscoutsiowa.org for a session schedule and registration information. Please register at least two weeks in advance. Confirmation materials will be sent to all registered participants. The cost is $25 and includes meals, snacks, and supplies. You may register for individual sessions but we encourage you to stay for the whole weekend!

VOLUNTEER AWARDSInterested in recognizing a special volunteer? Consider nominating them for an award! Find out more about these awards and how to nominate someone via girlscoutsiowa.org.

BULLYING PREVENTIONAre you interested in becoming a trainer or advocating for our relational aggression workshops? Please see page 22 for more information.

VOLUNTEERSWe all know that our girls can be leaders, but only one in five girls believes she can. Girls today are surrounded by media images that are an unhealthy portrayal of women, a culture of bullying, and women that lack confidence in their skills. Adult volunteers and mentors are one of the primary keys to helping give girls

the courage to believe in themselves,

the confidence to stand up for those beliefs, and

the character to make the world a better place.

If you have the passion to help our girls become the leaders we know they can be, we have many flexible volunteer opportunities throughout our Council. The way that you volunteer can be tailored to your interests, your skills, who you work with, and your timeframe. In addition, if you know someone who would make a good role model and mentor for girls, please ask them to contact us by phone or through our website. We are always looking for great volunteers!

Do you have something to share, teach, give? Now is the time to make a difference.

For more information, please contact your local Leadership Center or the ALE department at [email protected] or 515-278-2881 / 800-342-8389. Register online at girlscoutsiowa.org.
