Message to ParentsMEMBERSHIP CARD POLICYWakeman has a membership tracking system that requires all members to bring their membership cards every time they enterthe club. Members swipe their cards through a scanner when they come into the building. This system will allow staff to trackattendance and to alert the staff as to who is in the Club. This eliminates non-members from using the Club with the emphasison security in our daily lives. It is very important for parents to stress to their child the importance of presenting their cardwhen entering the Club.

PARKING LOTThe safety of all our members, both inside and outside the club is of vital importance. As our membership increases and ourprograms continue to grow, safety in the parking lot is an ongoing issue. We ask that you follow the one-way signs once youpull into the parking lot. If you are parking we ask that you are cautious when pulling in and especially when backing out, andPLEASE refrain from using cell phones while driving on Club property. Also, state law prohibits any use of the handicap spotwithout a valid handicap marker. This includes dropping your child off. Many times there are programs ending when othersbegin and at times the parking lot does become congested. We ask all our drivers to be aware for the safety of our members.

WEB SITE–www.wakemanclub.orgWakeman has made great use of our website this past year. Please continue to check the website for open gym times, leagueschedules, announcements, program descriptions, registration dates and cancellations. There is also an opportunity for feedbackfrom our members through email.

SENIOR STAFFDedicated adults are needed to work part-time during week nights and weekends. Senior Staff are responsible for supervisingclub members and programs, as well as assisting full-time staff with program set up, clean up and administrative tasks. If youare interested, please contact Rich at 259-4805 or [email protected].

Wakeman CommitmentA message from Clare Mahoney, Rich Lee, Ruben Goodwin, Maria Cimina & Geoff Baranger

Countless hours are put into the program planning process: organizing activities; scheduling gyms and field times; recruitingreferees, volunteer coaches and instructors. Before registering for any program, please be certain that your child is prepared toattend classes, practices, games or clinics unless, of course, he or she is injured, ill or academically ineligible. The Wakeman staffhas made a commitment to provide each youngster with the best possible Club experience. We ask that our members make thesame commitment in return.

Membership Dues• General Membership (3rd-12th grade) $85• Family Cap (3 or more children) $255• Mini Membership (1st-2nd grade) $30• Adult Membership (10:00am-2:00pm school days) $185

*General Memberships and Mini-Memberships will be prorated to a fee of $40 and $15 respectively on May 1, 2015

Wakeman ValuesThe following is a list of qualities that are important to leading a happy, fulfilling life.

We want our members to be good people. We want our members to be:

HonestThe most important value and you all know what it means.

But are you strong enough to live without lying? The Wakeman Staff thinks you are.

n

Sensitive to the Feelings of OthersWakeman is a place where everyone should feel comfortable and included.

If someone is not playing, ask them to join your game. No one is good at everything.

Do not make anyone feel bad about themselves. Wakeman wants its members to be strong and confident.

n

Willing to HelpWakeman is proud of our members and their willingness to volunteer and donate to those less fortunate.

Let’s not lose that attitude with each other. If another Wakeman member needs help consider it your duty to see to their needs.

n

Sportsmen and SportswomenWhen the other team wins by two or twenty do not pout or act out. Celebrate the fact that you are

part of the game and run over to congratulate the winners. The same goes for you when you win a game. Remember what it feels like to lose. Your opponents are feeling that way right now.

n

TrustworthyIf you say you are going to do something, make sure it gets done.

And if you are asked not to do something, don’t do it.

n

PatientRelax and give things time. The staff at Wakeman is here to serve you. If they are asking you to wait you can be sure it is for a good reason.

n

Willing to Try New ThingsThe only way you are going to learn is to try.

n

RespectOf Yourself, Of Your Family, Of Your Club.

PROGRAM REFUND POLICY/CANCELLATIONSWe understand that there are instances where participants would be entitled to a refund of fees paid. No matter how diligentlyone plans their family’s and children’s activities, situations may arise that require a change. However, as an organization, wemust set guidelines that allow us to plan for our seasonal needs such as ordering equipment, supplies and assignment of officials. All of these activities have a cost associated with them. For these reasons we have developed the following refund policy.

Full RefundA full refund (less a $10 administrative charge) will be given if a participant attends no practices, class, games or try-out sessionsand as long as jerseys, t shirts or gear have not been ordered for your child. The Club must receive notice of intent to withdrawten (10) days before the first scheduled session. Please allow 30 days for processing refund checks. * Membership is non-refundable and not transferable.

Partial or Pro-rated Club CreditBetween 0-3 sessions, practices, or classes attended, we allow a partial Club credit (less a $10 administrative charge). The pro-ratedClub credit will be based on participation, individual circumstances and whether or not jerseys, t-shirts or gear have been orderedfor your child and is at the discretion of the staff. Club credits are good for one year from date of issuance. * Membership is non-refundable and not transferable.

No RefundIf three practices, sessions, classes or one regular season game has elapsed, then no refund will be given. If a participant is dismissedat any time for disciplinary reasons then no refund will be given.

We hope this policy will be viewed as reasonable and necessary to allow us to support our programs in an organized fashion.

Bus Transportation to ClubhouseBus transportation is available from Tomlinson Middle School and Roger Ludlowe Middle School, Eagle Hill, St. Thomas & limited spots from Mill Hill, Sherman, Dwight, and Riverfield Elementary Schools to the Southport Clubhouse.

Can my child take the bus home any day of the week they want?Children are only allowed to take bus on the day of the week that they have been pre-registered through Wakeman. If yourchild is not scheduled to take the bus to Wakeman, but a family emergency makes it necessary for them to take the bus toWakeman, call the club and speak with Ruben Goodwin before 12:00pm at (203) 259-4805. Transportation will only be provided if space is available on the bus.

What do I do if my child is sick and will not attend school? When you notify school by phone to tell them that your child is sick, let them also know that your child will not take bus toWakeman that day.

What should I do if I cannot pick up my child until later than expected?Although the Clubhouse is open until 9:30pm every weekday, one or both gyms often close daily from 5:15-8:00pm for programs and the Computer Lab closes at 6:30pm daily. Children who often spend a long period of time at the club may run out of creative ways to stay busy. Parents should have two alternative people who can pick up their child in an emergencyin case parents are running late. This is also important in case your child gets sick or hurt at the clubhouse and needs to bepicked up early. Keep the phone numbers of alternative rides in your cell phone and at work.

Can my child leave Wakeman without a parent?Yes, Wakeman is a drop-in Clubhouse, meaning children can come and go as they please. Many children walk, ride bikes, orget dropped off at the Club and some may also walk to local convenient stores. Parents should discuss their own expectationswith children to be sure they reach an understanding of family rules.

What do I do if my child is in school, but will not take bus to Wakeman? If your child leaves school early due to illness or other reason, let the main office know that your child usually attends Wakeman but will not attend that day.

If your child is in school at regular dismissal time but will not take bus to Wakeman, you must send a note with your child in the morning to the school’s main office.

What happens on a half day of school? There will not be a bus available to Wakeman on scheduled half days of school (such as conference days or the day beforeThanksgiving), or unscheduled half days (due to inclement weather or other unforeseen reason). Children will be responsiblefor finding their own transportation home from school.

Is the Club open on snow days, days off from school and vacation weeks? On snow days, Wakeman attempts to open the Clubhouse at 3:00pm. During severe weather, the Club may stay closed for entire day. On scheduled days off from school and vacation weeks, Wakeman is usually open 11:00am-9:00pm. As a member, there is no additional fee for your child to drop in on these days.

How do I contact Wakeman? The Southport Clubhouse phone number is (203) 259-4805. Children can be reached at the Club, but the Club is a very busyplace with many children and programs taking place, so phones calls should be limited to emergencies. Children may use thefront desk phone to call their parents as needed.

Sponsors Needed!Sponsorship of Wakeman teams and leagues is a great inexpensive way to advertise your business while also helping tofund Wakeman’s extensive program offering. When a business sponsors a team or league, the name of that business isscreened onto the shirts of all the team members. Typically, that means 10-12 children per team wearing your name ontheir backs for eight straight weekends at the club-not to mention all around town throughout the year. Hundreds ofcommunity members will begin to recognize your business as a proud sponsor of Wakeman youth athletic and educa-tional programs! You can sponsor the team of your own child, a neighbor, or our choice. Whether it is a third grade pee-wee team, high school spring basketball team, lacrosse, we have just the right shirt for your business.

In addition, your business name will be posted on our Sponsor’s Board in the Warren Gymnasium and you will receive ateam photo/plaque to display in your place of business!

Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse2414 Fairfield Avenue, Bridgeport

It has been three years since the Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse opened in the West End of Bridgeport. In that time more than 70 programs have been offered to more than 1,200 children in grades 3-12. Programs have included an after school program, summer camp, arts & crafts classes, Lego programs, fitness and Zumba classes, basketball leagues, mentoring, dance classes, homework assistance, college prep programs, Keystone & Torch Clubs, college trips, travel programs and much, much more.

But perhaps more important than the lengthy list of programs offered is what the Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse has meant tothe young people who benefit from their time there. Like the Southport Clubhouse, the Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse has givenyoung people in an historically underserved community a place to go to be safe and have fun, a place they can feel that they belong and a place that gives them a chance to better themselves and their community around them all while under the watchfuleye of dedicated Wakeman staff and committed volunteers.

If you have yet to see the Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse for yourself…..please wait no longer! There are many opportunities tovolunteer and help make a difference while getting to know some of the terrific kids that call Smilow-Burroughs their “homeaway from home”. Contact Unit Director Jason Macchia at 203-908-3378 or by email at [email protected] if you wouldlike more information or would like to stop by for a tour...you will be glad you did!

Stratfield Clubhouse Special Announcement

The Stratfield Clubhouse at the Fairfield First Presbyterian Church closed permanently on August 1, 2014.

This was an agonizing decision for our board and staff but one that we firmly believe will optimize our organization’s resourcesand strengthen our ability to continue providing positive experiences for so many to learn, make new friends and have fun. Nev-ertheless, the decision to cease operations is bittersweet and at this juncture rather abrupt. Please accept our sincerest apologiesfor the untimely mid-summer announcement and inconvenience this may have caused your family.

We have made a concerted effort to provide some after-school alternatives by arranging to re-route buses to one of our otherWakeman clubhouses, and ultimately believe members and families will find many exciting benefits from their new clubhouses. For more information, please visit www.wakemanclub.org, email [email protected] or call Tim Cepetelli at 203-259-4805.
