With the cooling temperatures and the changing leaves, the month
of October is full of Fall activities shaping everyone’s calendars. This
month is filled with preparations as we look to the end of 2015 and gear up
for 2016.
Our Nominations Committee members have been working
diligently over the past 2 months. We have had Bible Study and prayer
while reflecting on who the Holy Spirit would have us seek to be our 2016
church leaders. Our goal is to present the proposed 2016 Fairview UMC
Leadership to our Church Council on Monday, October 19th. I am
grateful to those men, women, and youth who have prayerfully considered
the request to be in leadership.
I am grateful to our Finance Committee and every chairperson who
has submitted a potential cost for 2016 for specific areas of ministry. The
finance committee was able to put together a 2016 budget that was
presented at our September council meeting.
Our chairpersons are preparing their reports for our Charge
Conference booklet as well. Each ministry team will have the opportunity
to share what has happened throughout the year, as well as the goals to
aspire for in 2016.

TheThe
To transcend our human frailties through the worship of God
and the proclamation of God’s Word.
To transform people into faithful disciples through the spiritual
disciplines of study, fellowship, and service.
To transmit the love of Jesus Christ to a broken world through the ministry of
hospitality and evangelism.

Our Charge Conference this year is Sunday, November 8th at 4:30pm at Trinity UMC on Arnett
Boulevard. The discussions for all attendees will be focused on the following scripture and questions:
Luke 9:1-17 (pray and read through 2 or 3 times)
* What questions come to your mind?
* Who in this story is most/least concerned about scarcity?
* Who is anxious about the fact that people are being healed?
* Whose view is closest to your own? How does it shape your faith and your relationship with God?
* How does Jesus transform situations of neediness and scarcity into signs of God’s abundant grace and
care? How can we do the same?
* What are our personal resources for ministry? What are our connectional resources for ministry?
I know that as you read through the remainder of the newsletter, you will get an overview of all that is
being planned for October. For all of the activities that we have planned, we are all reminded that we are a
place of worship - a place of prayer - a place of healing, learning, and being shaped by God’s Word and a
place of Christian outreach and fellowship. For all that we do here, we are always reminded that we are to be
in prayer – constant conversation (speaking AND listening) with our Lord. As your pastor, I continue to be
grateful for your prayers. I leave you with two quotations that remind me of the importance of prayer in each
of our lives and in the life of our community of faith:
From Richard J. Foster in his Celebration of Discipline:
“To pray is to change. Prayer is the central avenue God uses to transform us.”
From Soren Kierkegaard in his Christian Discourses:
“A man prayed, and at first he thought that prayer was talking.
But he became more and more quiet until in the end he realized that prayer is listening.”
Praying for you and praying always that our Lord will bless you and keep you close.
God bless, Pastor Monge

“The arrival in Europe of massive numbers of Middle Eastern refugees is causing crises for humanitarian organizations and churches as well as for governments. At such a time, scripture draws us to Matthew 25:35b: “I was a stranger and you welcomed me,” Jesus said in a sermon about the behavior he expects of those whose lives reflect the grace and love of God. The thousands of displaced persons pouring out of Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, and various parts of Africa into Europe put a tremendous strain on regional and global economics, political and social systems, and human compassion. Christians know our responsibility: Welcome the stranger, and that can be a tough mandate, difficult and risky, demanding of sober realism, and also full of potential for new insights and understandings about human and cultural relations. United Methodists are wondering and asking the General Board of Global Ministries about how The United Methodist Church in Europe and at the international level is responding to the migration crisis.”

October Birthdays Caring and Health Ministry
Thank you to all who assisted with the Health Fair and Fall Festival. Despite the cloudy weather,
the event was well attended. We had 16 donors who were willing to "give the gift of life" and donate
blood at DRMC's blood mobile. We had to turn donors away because the Blood Mobile staff ran out of
supplies! What an awesome response! Thank you to all the donors! Thank you to the One Day Surgery
staff who attended the event to obtain Blood Pressures and Oxygen levels. This booth had a line most of
the day. All of the Health Information tables were visited by our guests and felt it was a good response.
The children enjoyed all of the Fire Safety, EMS and Police vehicles that were in attendance. This
proved to be a great day to reach out to our church family as well as the surrounding community.
Again, thank you to all who helped make this day a success.
Just a reminder...anyone needing monetary assistance with their prescription medications, please
see Barbara Grogan. She will work diligently to find you some help. Barbara was able to help someone
who attended the Health Fair to find monetary assistance and thus this person has begun to send others to
Barbara for her help. Thanks Barbara for your time with this Health Ministry.
Blood pressure screenings continue the 3rd Sunday of each month. Anyone who would like to
volunteer their time to take Blood pressures or record the results, please see me.
Flu season is just around the corner...Remember to get your flu shot!
Please let me know if I can be of any assistance to our church family with Caring and Health
Ministries.
God Bless, Kristen Aron
Christian EducationChristian EducationChristian Education Katherine Lewis, Director of Christian Education September Mission Report
As we gear up for the upcoming holiday season, I want to continue to
thank you for the great work you are doing to help spread God’s love.
In August we delivered $100 to Park Avenue School along with about
$300 of supplies like tissues, hand sanitizer, jogging pants, and school supplies.
They were so appreciative. We will be working on a backpack project to help
feed needy children during the holidays (the staff think there are about 120).
Please let us know if you have a desire or calling to help with this.
We will continue the Christmas Stocking project for the Salvation Army. If
you know of a church or group that would be willing to fill stockings, please
contact LaVonne Walden or leave information with the Welcome Center.
In addition, there is a necessity out there for children that are living
without one or both parents due to incarceration. We were asked if we would
consider joining the mission, remembering Robert Thompson and Mark Monge
who were so devoted to jailhouse ministry. This is a little different from
Salvation Army Angel Tree, as we would actually deliver directly to the family in
need. Please consider this option as you ponder your Christmas outreach.
On another note, most of you know I lost my brother-in-law several years
ago to suicide. Danville will be hosting their first ever “Walk to Fight Suicide” on
October 24th. I have several friends and family members that will be joining in
that walk. If you have had a friend or family member that you would like to
walk and remember, I would love to see a group from Fairview participating. If
you would like to sponsor a walker or make a donation in memory of someone
that may have committed suicide, please see me. There is much need out there
for education for people who battle depression or mental illness and I ask that
we don’t forget them in prayer. See the flyer posted on the Events bulletin
board for more information.
God bless you and us as we continue to follow his command to love our
neighbor and take care of those in need.
In God’s service, LaVonne Walden, Mission Committee

Where in the world has time flown? I really
am finding it hard to believe that October is here
and we are getting closer to the Advent Season.
Before I get into all the upcoming events, I’d
like to take a look back at September and say a
huge thank you to all those who volunteered their
time to make our Fall Festival/Health Fair a
Success. All of our health vendors seemed to be
pleased with the turn out and our country store
and food vendors were able to help us get a start
on the fundraising for Youth and Children’s
Missions. We could not have asked for a better
day and were so blessed to be able to reach out
into the community!
October will be busy! Along with the Daily
Grind we will also be doing the following:
October 4th at 4:30 there will be a meeting
concerning our upcoming Christmas Play. We
are planning to meet this day with everyone
who is interested in their children or youth
participating in this year’s play. Practices will
be each Sunday from 4:30 to 6:00 (with the
exceptions of a few Sundays) and will go
through the performance on Sunday evening
December 20th. Please plan to attend this
meeting, there will be some very important
info given at this time. If you just cannot make
the meeting, see Juli or I for more information.
October 24th at 9:30 we will have our first
Super Saturday. Please let me know if you
and your child will be able to attend. We are
planning to take this time to go visit our shut-in
members and then enjoy lunch together. This
is always a fun time of fellowship. Please plan
to join us.
October 31st starting at 5:30 until we are out of
candy, will be our annual Trunk or Treat. The
Education Committee would love it if you
would consider a biblical trunk but are not
requiring it for participation! Please let me
know if you will be able to host a trunk! We
are also in need of LOTS of candy for this
event. Just bring that to the office and I will
get it where it needs to go! Thanks so much
for the support you have always given this
event!
I am also excited to mention that our
Preschool, Becky’s Kiddie Kollege, which is a self-
supporting ministry of Fairview UMC, is off to the
start of a great school year. We have grown a bit
this year and are just about at max capacity.
Thanks for continuing to keep this awesome
ministry of our church in your prayers! One of my
favorite times in my week is our chapel/music
time. During this time we use a curriculum to
teach the children more about God. Last month
we talked about God’s faithfulness and how he
cared for Moses from the time he was a baby in a
basket until he was a grown man in the desert.
This month we will be talking about Samuel and
how he loved God. It is always so wonderful to
see what and how the children learn! Their faith is
so pure.
I am also still in need of some people to join
us in the capacity of serving in the nursery at both
services, as a Children’s Church Helper and
Sunday School Floater. If you don’t know what
those jobs entail, just let me know so that I can tell
you more and see if that is an area you would like
to serve.
In Sunday school this month our kids will be
talking more about God’s promise to Abraham.
Ask them more about it. It’s amazing what they
learn.
Lastly our church has joined a new Bible
study resource. It is called Right Now Media and
it’s basically like Netflix for Bible studies. The
church has bought a subscription and we would
love for everyone to use it. It is great for small
groups, Sunday school classes, or even individual
study. If you would like to check it out or have
more questions let me know. All I need from you
to get you signed up is your email address. We
are hoping to use this tool to help us be more
effective with ministry and be able to meet the
needs of more people. Please take a look at it or
let me know if you have questions.
Below is a list of dates past October. I pray
that the month of October will bring you many
blessings.

Can you believe we are looking ahead to Christmas already? We have been invited to participate in this years Christmas play with the children. I am excited for us to
join the children in this wonderful ministry! There will be an informational meeting to discuss the play and needed commitments on Sunday October 4th at 5 pm. If your youth would like to participate in the play in any type of role, we need
for you to attend this meeting. If you have a major conflict, please let me know and we can make other arrangements but attendance at this meeting is preferred. Once
we know who is participating, parts will be assigned and a practice schedule finalized. Tentative practice times will be on Sunday afternoon from 4:30-6 on most
weeks between the 4th and the final play on the Sunday before Christmas. Again, please plan to attend or contact Kate or me for more information.
The Middle School Conference Retreat will be November 13th-15th at Eagle Eyrie. The cost is $125 per
person. Please let me know by October 18th if your youth plans to attend!
October 23rd we will be going to Judgement House
at North Main Baptist Church. Cost is $2 + a
canned good. We will meet at church at 5:30 pm and
go together. Please sign up with Juli no later than
October 11th.
Greetings friends!
Christmas will be here before you know it so now is the time to mark your calendars for this year's Christmas Cantata. This year the choir will perform
Mark Hayes' Let Heaven and Nature Sing Gloria, a wonderful work full of familiar holiday favorites and festive new songs. Please join us on Sunday December 13th
at 7 p.m. There will be an open rehearsal prior to that night's performance for those who wish to attend that as well. That rehearsal time and date will be
determined at a later time.
I would also like to invite you and all your friends to give our new worship experience 'Faith Time' a try. I have really enjoyed preparing and presenting
music at our recent Wednesday night services and I'm sure you will find something enriching and enlightening. Services are on Wednesday evenings at
6:30 p.m. following dinner.
Finally, just a reminder that I will be giving a piano recital in the sanctuary on October 22nd at 7 p.m. I haven't given a public recital in several years so I would
really appreciate your support as I attempt to get back in the swing of things. I hope to see you there!
